Photoshop CS5 - Thumbnails in Explorer
I convert all my photos into dng and some I leave as raw but in any case I cannot see the photos when I do an open in CS5 and browse to see the picture, is there something I need to download 3rd party wise to view these or am I messing up somewhere?
Explorer integration seems to be a bit of a blind spot with Adobe, especially with the 64 bit operating systems. Not only with .dng files but also with .psd.
There are 3rd party companies that have created commercial codecs for Explorer that will show you the thumbnails. For example:
http://www.ardfry.com/dng-codec/
You might even be able to find a free one on the web (more likely if you're running a 32 bit OS).

I cannot update Photoshop CS5, Bridge Extended after a fresh reinstall.
It's running in 32 and 64, but there's all these quirks.Like Bridge crashing in 64 but not 32. Raw also. The ATI Radeon5450 is often problematic (not capable of Open GL) In fact, I've been unable to work for a month now. Also, I can't tell if I've got Extended, I tried a downloaded install as well as from my original disk.
Here's what I have (Sorry about the size, I didn't know what might help)

Okay.... so I am a bit overwhelmed with trying to decide if I should be upgrading from iPhoto or not.
iPhoto has been great for making my photobooks. But, on occasion, it has been a bit frustrating trying to get the right number of vertical vs. horizontal photos on a page. Sometimes when adding, if you add in the right order, configurations can change, usually in size (not necessarily orientation unless it is the fewer photos per page layouts 2-3 or 4). But, it makes it go really quickly to do albums as there isn't much engineering going on as you go from page to page (on occasion, I make a separate dummy album that has a different theme that I think manages my horizontal v. vertical issue or perhaps the number of photos allowed on a page (as some themes only have up to 4 or 6 photos per page and on occasion, I like to have more 9, for example)).
Primarily, I have used iPhoto to do personal albums. I intend on possibly starting to offer my services to get albums done for people and/or do slideshow videos for them. With that, I do end up, even with my own, photos from years past or current that have coloring issues or rips/tears/fading.
As it is right now, I have used iPhoto to work on the highlights, shadows, etc, which for me right now, is by trial and error.... I don't really know what I am doing and iPhoto doesn't seem to care. Fortunately, whatever I do, I can go back to the original, which I think is true in Aperture as well... However, I think I might have heard differently with Photoshop (CS5 or Elements)?
I have not installed any plug-ins for the other printer services in iPhoto (eg. Leather Craftsmen), but, I know it is possible a client may want a 12x12 album or some of those other shapes, sizes, cover options out there.... e.g. Shutterfly, even.
One other bit of information is that I am not just a candid completely amateur photographer either. I do take quite a bit of photos with my Canon Rebel Xsi. Not top of the line.... but, although I can should in raw, have chose to always just go with jpeg as this is a hobby of mine and I really don't have loads of time to just adjust all my photos... nor necessarily the space on my computer to put everything at raw. But, I could be persuaded otherwise, if I really knew how to use and really know what the benefits of it are (again, I know I should take classes or something, just don't know where to focus my attention).
So, what am I asking? Well, a few things:
1. If my primary goal is to make Photobooks, which program(s) should I have?
2. I understand you could have iPhoto or Aperture and then edit photos in PhotoShop.... Does that save the file back to Aperture/iPhoto or does it make a separate file in Photoshop?
3. Which books, classes, etc would you suggest to learn the uses of such program(s)?
4. Does the program you mention in #1 strong enough to handle typical adjustments on jpegs-aging, color casts, lack of proper lighting, red-eye (iPhoto seems to do okay on this even in the auto function, but on occasion, it sometimes replaces with too dark of a correction, or not fully complete.)
5. Does Shutterfly have a print plug-in so I could make photobooks on either Aperture or iPhoto and have Shutterfly print? Or is that just available on Photoshop (unless I print to jpegs and then upload to Shutterfly using the Shutterfly uploader)?
6. Is it really beneficial to shoot in raw over jpeg?
7. If Photoshop is even part of your answer in #1, is it worth it to have CS5 or CS5 Extended with the 3D option?1. If my primary goal is to make Photobooks, which program(s) should I have?
iPhoto is entirely template driven, Aperture's books are very customisable and there are losts of online options too. Google a bit and see what's out there.
2. I understand you could have iPhoto or Aperture and then edit photos in PhotoShop.... Does that save the file back to Aperture/iPhoto or does it make a separate file in Photoshop?
Yes and Yes. In iPhoto: You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.
Note that iPhoto sends a copy+ of the file to Photoshop, so when you save be sure to use the Save command, not Save As... If you use Save As then you're creating a new file and iPhoto has no way of knowing about this new file. iPhoto is preserving your original anyway.
In Aperture, Preferences _. Export and set your external editor there. WHen you send a pic to PS with Aperture it makes a tiif or psd and sends it over. Saving in Photoshop brings it back.
Photoshop Elements is a good compromise between the cost of full photoshop and the features you'll need.
5. Does Shutterfly have a print plug-in so I could make photobooks on either Aperture or iPhoto and have Shutterfly print? Or is that just available on Photoshop (unless I print to jpegs and then upload to Shutterfly using the Shutterfly uploader)?
You could look that one up at Shutterfly yourself, no?
6. Is it really beneficial to shoot in raw over jpeg?
Depends on what you want to do... Really that's a massively basic question. I would check out some o the online Photo forums and see what advice you can find there tom get you started. You could do worse than look here
http://www.digital-photography-school.com/
7. If Photoshop is even part of your answer in #1, is it worth it to have CS5 or CS5 Extended with the 3D option?
Given the amount of your experience, rather than diving in and spending a whole lot of money, start with iPhoto and Photoshop Elements. Explore. IF you want to upgrade, when you're ready, migrate to Aperture and Elements. I think you're a good way from facing CS5 yet.

Photoshop CS5 Flickers Under Windows 8 64
I just upgraded my Win7 64 desktop to Win8 pro 64, and now photoshop cs5 is behaving very strangely. Any mouse click operation causes the entire working window to flicker, and the background to cycle between the normal pale gray background, a window full of transparent pixel rectangles, and solid black. Although functionality is not impaired (i.e., whatever one clicked with the mouse), as you might imagine it's very distracting .
There doesn't appear to be any update from Adobe available within the help menu, so I think I'm up to date on the software.
Has anyone else run into this? Is there a fix? Is this a known incompatibility between CS5 and Win8 64? I spent hours searching online before I did the Win8 upgrade looking for compatibility information on photoshop cs5 (and the rest of the cs5 master suite) but found very little information.Noel Carboni wrote:
Out of curiosity, what compelled you to buy Windows 8?
It is not a Windows 8 discussion, but since you asked -- I bought an upgrade to Windows 8 Pro for $39.99 during Microsoft's promotional period. I think it was quite a compelling reason to buy a pro version of the latest OS for that price. Like it or not, Windows 7 is now 3 years old. But, hey, there're still people running XP
Also someone asked about reasons for upgrading to Windows 8. Here's mine:
1. Built-in anti-virus, improved firewall and overall security features on the kernel level. Stuff like, improved Windows drivers security, boot loader, etc.
2. Improved performance -- anything from less number of running system services to a better RAM utilization. I can attest to that. Same stuff runs faster. Also much faster boot time as well as entering and leaving sleep modes.
3. Improved Solid State Drive support "out-of-the-box". No additional set-up needed.
4. Much improved Windows Explorer. (One of the compelling reasons for me.) They returned its toolbar that was taken out in Vista and made it optional. Also made it look more like Office ribbon, which everyone is familiar with by now.
5. Much improved Task Manager. It adds a ton of useful features for a more geeky kind.
6. Less intrusive Windows updates. No more annoying popups telling you to reboot. You get a message on the lock screen and everything is installed during a reboot.
7. Much improved ways to create and do system recovery.
8. Other small tools and utilities that are very useful and are now in one place. Stuff like creation of backups and restore discs, etc.
I won't go any more into it because it is not a Windows 8 discussion. The bottom line is that all of my apps that used to work in Windows 7 seem to work just fine in Windows 8... except the Adobe CS 5 products. So you do the math... I understand that It's always easy to blame the OS maker or a driver maker. Although I do agree with you on one thing -- it is probably wise to wait until a Service Pack comes out. And it is not just because Microsoft would fix its bugs, it's mostly because all of the OEMs and software vendors will catch up to the new technologies. -
Photoshop CS5 Clipboard Issue (Win 7)
I have a copy of PS CS5 installed and i can only paste an image that i copied from before the program was started. When Ps is already started and I copy an image and try to paste it in PS it will paste the image I copied before I started the program not the one I just copied...
It's a pretty annoying situation... not being able to copy and paste once the program is running. I have to shut it down, start it up again to paste the image I want...
Anybody a solution?
I work on: Win 7 ultimate 64 bit - i7 - 8 gigs ramfunction(){return A.apply(null,[this].concat($A(arguments)))}

Are you guys sure this isn't a PS 64 bug?
It's clearly a bug with something. But even though you're seeing it in multiple places, please rest assured it doesn't happen for everyone using Photoshop CS5 x64.
Shall we go about describing the differences between your systems (plural) and systems NOT experiencing the problem?
What applications do you have installed. What antivirus? What programs are starting when you boot up / log in?
Here's what's starting on my x64 system (courtesy Autoruns), on which the clipboard works just fine:
AdobeAAMUpdater-1.0 (Adobe Updater Startup Utility)
WebDriveTray (part of the WebDrive application for providing access to FTP sites via drive letters).
avast5 (Avast! Antivirus)
StartCCC (ATI/AMD's Catalyst 10.8 video driver control center)
vmware-tray (part of the VMware Workstation virtualization application)
Outlook.lnk (Outlook 2003 eMail client starts up when I log in)
ShellFolderFix.lnk (a small applet called ShellFolderFix that helps position Explorer windows when first opened)
Skype (audio/chat communications program)
WizMouse (a small applet that directs mouse wheel events to whatever app the mouse is over)
Here are my non-Microsoft shell extensions and drag/drop handlers (courtesy Autoruns and ShellExView):
ACE (AMD Desktop Control Panel, part of Catalyst 10.8 video drivers)
avast (Avast! Antivirus Shell Extension)
CirrusShellEx (provides right-click access to the Beyond Compare 3 file comparison application)
ClassicCopyExt (part of the ClassicShell application that adds enhanced dialogs to copy/move operations)
Create ISO Image from directory (part of the ISO Recorder application that provides access to ISO files)
TortoiseSVN (provides right-click access to Tortoise Subversion)
WebDrive (manages drive letters connected by the WebDrive FTP access application)
There are other things, such as services, that could be involved, but let's start by comparing your systems to these and let us know what's common between them but different from the above lists.

I am about to upgrade to LR 5. Currently I use LR4.4 which uses Camera RAW 7.4. LR5 uses Camera RAW 8.2. Will I be able to edit RAW files in LR5 and still continue to edit the resultant files in Photoshop CS5 without using a DNG conversion?
The only practical limitation is that you lose some of the functions under "Edit in" - smart objects, layers, hdr and pano. These are Photoshop scripts that rely on ACR processing the raw files.
Just to clarify in case of any confusion: if you are previously used to being able to override the default filename and folder location of your LR edits into Photoshop, by using "Save As" - you will need to stop doing that, and only use "Save".
[When ACR is not involved - when it is LR which carries out the rendering of the adjustments and the creation of a working file for PS to edit - the file has already been saved before PS ever sees it. So that is where the editing changes made by PS have to be put, in order for Lr to show them as an update.]
Also, if you are previously used to sometimes changing your mind about doing a PS edit "midway", and exiting PS without having saved anything - this working scenario will still leave that brand new editing file on disk, plus a new thumbnail inside LR corresponding to that. That pairing would require manual deletion, separately, from inside LR.

Photoshop CS5.1 Crashes on open or save
I have only just today bought Photoshop CS5.1 and installed it on my Notebook. If I try to open an image Photoshop crashes. If I bring it in through explorer or Bridge then I can edit away merrily no problems, but once I try to save the file, Photoshop crashes.
I have read and tried every possible option on the internet to resolve this including......
Turning off Open GL inside Photoshop
Deleting, reinstalling and Updating to the latest disply driver - shown below
Resetting the preferences using the Ctrl Alt Shift keys on startup
Deleting the psp files
Running Windows 7 in classic mode
Nothing seems to matter. Can anyone help me

Anyone know what any of that means? It seems ridiculous to me that you pay alot of money for a program that has a lot of users and something like this continually happens. And right from the start searching online has brought up a lot of people with a similar problem.
Thanks again for your help

Photoshop CS5 Classroom in a book lesson 13
Hi,
Will somebody help me. In lesson 13 of Classroom in a book PS CS5 you learn to make html-files in PS CS5. After creating a file you are asked to pre-run it with Bridge. Rightclick and then open with a browser. I can't open this just made file (html) in Explorer or any other browser. My PS opens and is restricted to Word only..... What is wrong?? Has this something to do with PS or....???
I solved the problem for now by using Dreamweaver (Web-preview) instead but it's annoying....Hi Noel,
Sorry for my late response, I did the first option. That worked but is not what I like.
The second suggestion you made gave: HTML listed "Windows explorer".
Do I have to change that to Photoshop CS5 or.....
Hope you will help me out here

Bridge & Photoshop CS5, opening Photoshop files from Bridge
If I open Bridge in Photoshop CS5, & double click on a jpeg thumbnail in Bridge, it will not automatically open the file in Photoshop. Why?
How can I change my settings so that the files selected in Bridge will automatically open in Photoshop when double clicked?Hi, when you go to Bridge/Preferences/file Type Associations, & you see the box with a list of file formats in bold on the left, you will see a program name or the word 'None' next to each one, & an arrow to click on, to the right of each one.
If you have 'None' written there, it means it hasn't got a program allocated to it, or it may have some other program written there instead.
What you need is to see Adobe Photoshop CS5 in the list on the right, next to every file format that you use.
You could try clicking on the Reset to Default button at the bottom of the box to see if it brings up Adobe Photoshop CS5 automatically.
If it doesn't, or brings up other programs instead, click on each of the arrows on the right inside the box, then hit 'Browse'', then look on your hard disk for the program file for CS5, & select the actual application set up file 'Set-up.exe''.
That's what worked for me.
Good luck! -
I can't edit my photos in Photoshop CS5.
I'm not able to edit my photos from iPhoto in Photoshop CS5. I've already tried the Preferences and chosen Photoshop as my editing program. I can't even drag and drop the photos into Photoshop. I've even tried to email them to myself. No luck. All I can do is LOOK AT them in iPhoto! Help, I'm on a deadline!
Are you able to open and edit a photo outside of iPhoto with CS5? When you selected CS5 as the editor in iPhoto's preferences did you select the folder that holds CS5
or did you select the application:
Some have made the mistake of selecting the folder. Be sure you haven't.
The following are tips on using Photoshop from within iPhoto:
Using Photoshop CS3 (or Photoshop Elements) as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
(the PS screenshots are from CS3)
1 - select Photoshop as your editor of choice in iPhoto's Advanced Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.
2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop. When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.
3 - however, if you get the navigation window
that indicates that PS wants to save it as a PS formatted file. You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.
This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
NOTE: With Photoshop Elements 9 the Saving File preferences should be configured as shown:
s I also suggest the Maximize PSD File Compatabilty be set to Always. In PSE’s General preference pane set the Color Picker to Apple as shown:
NOTE: If you want to use both iPhoto's editing mode and PS/PSE without having to go back and forth to the Preference pane, once you've selected PS as your editor of choice, reset the Preferences back to "Open in iPhoto". That will let you either edit in iPhoto using the Edit button or Control-clicking on the thumbnail and selecting "Edit in iPhoto" or in PS/PSE by Control-clicking on the thumbnail and selecting "Edit in External Editor" in the Contextual menu.
This way you get the best of both worlds.

"C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS5.1 (64 Bit)\Photoshop.exe" "%1",
Fonts malfunctioning in Photoshop CS5
Hi, I've got a problem with certain fonts in Photoshop CS5 running on Windows 7. Normally in the drop-down menu of the fonts list, there's an "O" or "TT" symbol next to each font to signify if it's OpenType or TrueType respectively. However, there are five fonts that don't have either symbol:
Courier Regular
FixedSys
Small Fonts
System Bold
Terminal
Whenever I select these fonts in Photoshop, I get an error message saying "Could not complete your request because of a program error". This is particularly annoying, because it interrupts me scrolling through the fonts list. I tried hiding these fonts in Windows Explorer, but even though they don't appear in Microsoft Office programs, they still show up in Photoshop. I want to delete them, but apparently they are protected system fonts. So I followed this guide to take ownership of the fonts: http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/67717-take-ownership-file.html
After I had reassigned ownership of the fonts to me, I was able to delete Courier Regular, Small Fonts and System Bold. However I can't delete FixedSys because I get an error message saying "FixedSys (Set #6) cannot be deleted because it is in use." (No, it's not!) And for some reason I can't reassign ownership for Terminal because its Properties aren't available. Even if I hold Alt and double-click on the font (which is the shortcut for opening Properties), nothing happens. How do I delete these two malfunctioning fonts from my computer?I strongly recommend you try to get to the bottom of why you're having a "malfunction" rather than try to delete protected system fonts. Windows protects those fonts for a reason, and trying to remove them WILL net you other problems.
For what it's worth, the fonts you have named all work great on my Windows 7 system in Photoshop, so there's some specific problem with your setup (Photoshop? Your system?) that you really need to solve.
Not having seen the particular problem you're reporting, I don't really know how to tell you to get more information, but I definitely advise you to try to solve that problem directly and not delete the fonts.
Because you've already removed the above fonts, I suspect at some point you may need to reinstall windows (although it may have restored them automatically). I recommend you run the command SFC /SCANNOW /VERIFYONLY on your system (from a CMD window started as Administrator). Windows will tell you whether it is in need of repair.

Why won't Lightroom 3.3 send a dng file to Photoshop CS5?
I am using a Windows 7 64 bit platform, Lightroom 3.3, Camera Raw 6.3 and Photoshop CS5 also 64 bit. I have my photos (from a Nikon D3100) in dng format but when I try to open it in Photoship using the Edit in command to send it either as a dng file or a smart object I get a notice that the file couldn't open because Photoshop couldn't be opened. In fact Photoshop does open (or it is already open). Sometimes, the file will eventually open in Photoshop, but it takes several minutes -- like 5 or more, other times it never opens.
Can anyone offer any suggestions or help?
PQuote <Is there a setting LR or on the camera that I can use to allow LR to recognise (and render) the NEF file from the camera?>
No. LR will only show the thumbnail rendered by the camera,if it is possible. The better practice would be to download the files from the CF/SD card using a reliable card reader, this would be more efficient/faster and reliable. (use the camera to take photographs, rather than have it attached to the computer.)
A LR generated preview will only be rendered after the import of the NEF. -
Is ACR7 compatible with Photoshop CS5?
I've installed the beta of Photoshop CS6 and it includes ACR7, which -- as expected -- has adjustments and sliders like those in Lightroom 4. But my version of Photoshop CS5 still is using ACR 6.7rc.
First issue: how can I get CS5 to use ACR7?
Second issue: now that CS6 is installed, there doesn't seem to be a way for me to directly transfer a DNG file from Lightroom 4 to CS5 for processing (with any version of ACR). As I'm testing a beta (CS6), I want some way of returning to my previous state of affairs (Lightroom 4 and CS5, but preferably with ACR7) without going through too many hoops.
Thanks,
DaveA slight twist on the question of what matches up with which:
I want to explore some of the sample raw images that are appearing from the Nikon D4 and D800.
I'd rather not install the RC on my production computer, which is where I have CS5.5 installed.
But the version of Camera Raw that comes with the Ps CS6 beta, which I've installed on a test computer, doesn't seem to understand the D4 and D800 files.
Is there an easy (or even moderately complicated) solution that would let me add the new-camera capabilities to the Ps CS6 beta? -
Images opened in Photoshop CS5 has a blue-tinted grayscale
I was using Photoshop CS5 (64-bit) fine yesterday but today each image I open shows a loss of colour, everything looks like a blue tinted grayscale.
The same with RAW files oipened in ACR and all files opened in Bridge.
When I open a JPEG version in Microsoft Image Viewer the colour is fine.
In Windows, the thumbnails look fine with full colour in the folders.
The loss of colour only happens when the image files are opened in Photoshop, Bridge and ACR.
Anyone out there who can help?
Many thanks. Many thanks to Silkrooster, Alec Molloy & Chris Cox, for all your help and time.
Just for info - the Huey Pro calibrator has worked well with this monitor (Dell U2410) for at least a couple of years now.
I tried old profiles created previously using the HueyPRO but they did not work, so I deleted them from the System32/spool/drivers/color folder.
Then a new HueyPRO-created monitor profile did not work, so I deleted that as well.
Then at start up, the HueyPRO seemed to auto-create its own monitor profile which it named: "hueyPRO Dell U2410 F525MOA70DKL.icc"
But that gave the same loss of colour when opening files in Photoshop
So I think Chris is exactly right - the problem must be with the HueyPRO "cigar" hardware, or with its software, so I may well have been bothering you all unnecessarily.
I'll try getting a new hueyPRO - but not too common in the shops here in central Africa.
In the meantime, I've uninstalled HueyPRO and I'm using a reference image to calibrate using the NVIDEA Control Panel (I'm working on a commission for two photo calendars at the moment and so have to keep it going....).
Any recommendations on a better calibrator (but a non-too technical one!)??
