Photoshop CS5 unexplained freezing

Hi, so I've been using CS5 since it came out, and have had no problems whatsoever. But today I started my computer and when I went to open a file, CS5 totally froze. I thought perhaps it was just that file, but it froze on every file. I did some reading around and found that people had the same problem when they had a network printer installed, however, I don't have any printers installed, local or network. I also read that it can be caused by irregular fonts, however, my system only currently has the default Windows 7 fonts installed and nothing else. Just in case some program had installed new fonts, I cleaned my system of fonts and reinstalled all of the base Windows 7 fonts, but still had the problem.
It even freezes when I go into the preferences, or create a new file...
I have downloaded the latest patch as suggested by this forum, and also have the latest video card drivers for my machine. My system specs are as follows:
Windows 7 64bit
ATI Radeon HD 4870 X2
Intel Quad Core Q8200 2.33GHz
4GB DDR3 RAM
If anyone could give me any advice or help, that would be awesome, as I really need to use Photoshop for work.

I honestly don't think the problem is that something's wrong in the preference files. Resetting preferences doesn't clear them for all versions, just the one you're running.
And I don't think using preference files from one system is a good idea on another one anyway.
I'm sorry that this seems to have turned out to cause you more trouble - this is the first I've heard of clearing Photoshop preferences to defaults causing a lockup. But keep at it; something else more fundamental than a preferences setting must be wrong.
I hate to ask, but have you tried a reboot lately?

Why does my Photoshop CS5 keep freezing?

I'm running Adobe Photoshop CS5 on a Lenovo ThinkPad S1 (8 GB ram) in Windows 8.1.

What exactly do I have to do to resolve this issue?

Photoshop cs5 instalation freeze

I have some issue with the installation of adobe photoshop cs5
The installation always freezes at the same place at 18% when it tries to install adobe air runtime.

I've gone ahead and done that and I still get the same results. I also moved things out of the Application Data folder one by one to test those files as well. A couple of times I could actually use Photoshop, but when I'd quit, it would stop working when I re-opened it. I checked the Windows Application Event viewer again and found this:

I'd like to clarify that I am by no means a Windows user, and that I am only running Photoshop on XP for work, so bear with me on that.

Help..two problems..photoshop cs5 buggy freezing, cannot import raw from lightroom..

I need help, the first problem is that photoshop cs 5 bugs up..no matter what I do ...repair permissions or repair disk, restart the computer..the program bugs..I cant open adjustment panels, or they freeze up, click on one and the window does not open need to change workspaces sometine to get to history or actions...the layers palette sometime wont move at all..I cant get direct support through adobe, I need someone to talk me through this problem, I have clients that need images retouched immediatly and I am moving at a turtles pace...no direct phone service with adobe, cant do live chat...damn it took me half an hour to just get here......
2nd problem, Light room, cant open up the raw images directly in photoshop, must convert them to tiffs first in plug in software through light room...every time I make an adjustment in the raw I have to open it up in export it into anyother softwar than photoshop, that converts it to tiff then from light room I can open it up but if I wish to go back and do adjustments I have to clone it and start a whole other image...
I had purged the cash in the preference panels in photoshop and that is when the problems with importing the raw directly from light room started... I am stuck, with two softwares that dont work seemlessly together at all for the moment, I cant work and my dead line is monday...I need help.....

Newly purchased Photoshop CS5 - keeps freezing and is unworkable

I just recently ( in the past two weeks) bought the full student edition of Photoshop CS5. Since then it has problems with freezing where the program just stops responding and most of the time when that freezes it force quit wont work so in order to restart it and try to continue my work I have to restart my computer. So far I have only been using it to manipulate photos at a basic level. The size of the images are not that large (13in x 17in at 240 resolution). They dont have that many layers (less than 20 so far). I had tried uninstalling and reinstalling but no change. I changed it from opening in 64 bit to 32 bit and that changed nothing either.

That sounds like you'd be running out of RAM and hitting the scratch disk a lot.
Are you sure that Photoshop isn't just waiting for the scratch disk?
How would I know if it is?

Photoshop CS5.5 freezes after 10 seconds of use every time

Hey everyone,
So weve been going nuts over this! Essentially I work for a big company, and we all have company laptops that we use to work on, which all have essentially the same programs installed on them. I have a Dell Latitude E6530, its running Windows 7, has a Corei7 vPro inside. Im running Adobe Production Premium CS5.5, and all the programs work perfectly fine (like I use Flash and Illustrator as well with no issues.) except for Photoshop.
When I boot up Photoshop (either version, 32 or 64), Ill be able to use it for about 10 seconds and then it will freeze. It will stay frozen until I actually go in and Task Manager the program off. It does not crash. This literally works with anything I do in Photoshop, I could literally have nothing open and go to the Preferences menu, and it will freeze there. I have tried looking up this problem online and I havent seen it as specified as this, I have seen it where people do something specific, like go to save, and it freezes AND crashes. Mine just freezes after ANYTHING I do after 10 seconds of use.
More about my set up. I have 3 monitors linked to my laptop. I initially thought maybe cutting it down to 2 or 1 might help, because it seemed to yesterday for a moment, but today I tried it and I had the same issue. I also have Symantic Encryption on my laptop, but so does everyone else and they can all run Photoshop completely fine. Weve updated the drivers and updated Photoshop and everything to the latest versions.
Does anyone know if Im just doing something very simple wrong that Im overlooking? I have seriously never had an issue this bad with Photoshop before. Let me know if you need any other information. Thanks for your help!

Yes, basically we have all the default fonts installed on our computers, but we use a program called Universal Type Client to get the fonts we need, and UTC grabs fonts from a server and temporarily makes them usable on our computer. But everyone has this software so I dont think that would have anything to do with it.
Could it possibly have something to do with my Video Drivers or Graphic Cards? Our tech guy mentioned it was strange that my computer had two different things (I believe he said I have a CORE i7 vPro and Nvidia NVS 5200M or something and that they may be competing?) or the amount of monitors Im using?

Text tool in Photoshop CS5? Help!

Whenever I try to use the "Text" tool in Photoshop CS5 it freezes on my Mac laptop and I have to force quit losing all of my work if I haven't saved. Help please?!

There's some confusion on your part. Apple's Font Book is just a standard, integral part of the OS, and it gets installed with every installation of the OS.
There's a different application called FontBook (no space) by Lemke software that would not interfere with anything.

Photoshop CS5 freeze after load (Windows XP)

I've been using Photoshop CS5 for about two months and have been having issues recently. After the application loads, it will freeze when you attempt to work on a file. For instance, I have a multi-layed PSD web layout that is only 2mbs in size. I'll load it from either the desktop or from the recent files list. I can usually start doing something (like start moving an layer or start editing text) but then the application freezes. If I open a file and do nothing and let the program sit, it eventually closes up and rarely throws an error. The Windows application event viewer gives me the following errors when it crashes:
Hanging application Photoshop.exe, version 12.1.0.0, hang module hungapp, version 0.0.0.0, hang address 0x00000000.
I also found this error, which I imagine will be much more helpful:

I've gone ahead and done that and I still get the same results. I also moved things out of the Application Data folder one by one to test those files as well. A couple of times I could actually use Photoshop, but when I'd quit, it would stop working when I re-opened it. I checked the Windows Application Event viewer again and found this:
Faulting application photoshop.exe, version 12.1.0.0, faulting module ole32.dll, version 5.1.2600.6010, fault address 0x0004b104.
I'd like to clarify that I am by no means a Windows user, and that I am only running Photoshop on XP for work, so bear with me on that.

Photoshop CS5 freezing on picture open...

When i go to open a file in Photoshop CS5, the program freezes and goes to not responding. When I run it as administrator it works fine.
The problem is there are certain add-ons that were added to Photoshop that will not appear when running as administrator
What is weirder is that Photoshop was running fine for months, and then suddenly started freezing. This is a user account logged in to a domain, but Phoptoshop is installed locally.
What is causing this?
We even tried a reinstall of the program as well, this is making no sense.
Even sometimes too, when I go to check for updates, there are none as I installed them all, after getting out of the check update screen it then freezes too.

Sure it does. Something you did recently borked your user privileges/ file permissions like installing some security tool or system update or moving files and folders around. And the add-ons do not appear because they are installed in your user folder. You would have to install them again as admin. Beyond that it's impossible to say much because you haven't bothered to provide proper system info and other details.

Why does Photoshop CS5 Extended (Mac) keep randomly freezing?

I'm running Photoshop CS5 Extended for Mac. I've had it for over a year now and it has worked perfectly fine until now.

Processor: 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
Memory: 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
The issue started a few weeks ago. I can't think of anything in particular that could've spurred it. What happens is that (generally within a few brush strokes, like five to ten) the program freezes. It gives me the little grey spinning wheel telling me that it's thinking, and that never stops. I've left it for hours before, waiting to see if it would ever snap out of it, and nothing. I always have to force quit the application.
There's no particular tool that makes this happen, because it's happened on everything from brush strokes to changing contrast to switching tools.
It's not like I'm using giant files—some are large and have lots of layers, but others are small blank canvases. It isn't like I'm running too many programs, because sometimes it happens while Photoshop is running by itself (no other programs.) There doesn't seem to be anything in particular that triggers it.
I've installed all the recent updates that could possibly be related to it—no dice.
I even tried uninstalling the program and reinstalling it. I had hoped that if it were some sort of bug due to settings I had changed or something, that would get rid of it. It didn't, but I'm inclined to think I didn't manage to remove everything related to the program, because when it opened after the reinstall, it still had all the same brush settings it had before I had uninstalled it. (Not sure if that means anything.)
Since I make a portion of my living off of illustration and graphic design commissions, it's incredibly important that Photoshop is usable, and fast. I appreciate any help anyone can give me.

Something must have changed a few weeks ago, perhaps it was an update? Adding a new font or plug-in?
Incompatable update in driver? RAM gone bad in GPU or OS?

Photoshop CS5 64x partially freezes up after trying to save a file !

Photoshop CS5 freezes up after trying to save a file. It doesnt freeze up totally .It just leaves me about 3 choices from the drop down menu.
This only happens with the installed 64 bit version and not with the installed 32 bit version?
My Operating System(OS) is Win.7 64x. I have all the latest versions of everything installed! The computer is run by an Intel 7 930 quad core processor with 8GB DDR 3 Ram(1600Hz). I have reinstalled both Photoshop Versions(32&64 bit versions) but still get the same problem.
The image files that i have tried to save are not corrupted as I can save them using the 32bit ver. But cannt save them via the 64 bit ver. without the software partially freeing up! Would be most grateful for any proper and constructive advice in order to remedy this problem.

Re comparing to Irfan View:
For what it's worth, Irfan Skiljan's marketing strategy is just different than Adobe's. He may actually be more wealthy for having written that one application than most any Adobe engineer has made from Photoshop (well, maybe not Mr. Knoll). I know I've paid Irfan for my copy. By some counts he has hundreds of millions of copies in circulation. If only one in a thousand people paid him the $10... And who knows what Google pays him for piggybacking their stupid toolbar (grrrrr, but it's deselectable)...
I agree with you that recovering a corrupted file at all costs is way better than "nope, can't open it for you", don't get me wrong.
Just keep in mind that IrfanView is not chopped liver - it's Irfan's lifetime achievement, and he may well have a few unique tricks all his own up his sleeve. In some parts of the software world a bright individual can still shine, even amongst the giants.
At least you have a workaround: Open it in Irfan View, Copy, File-New in Photoshop, Paste, Merge Down.

Photoshop CS5 freezing-up on new iMac

I've received the new 27" iMac last week, 32GB of RAM, 1Tb Fusion Drive, GeForce GTX 680. Installed everything, including Photoshop CS5 Premium. I'm moving-up from a 2008 Mac Pro, where Photoshop CS5 ran flawlessly. However, on the new iMac, everytime I open up a file (PSD, JPG, anything), Photoshop freezes up for 5-6 seconds. It may not seem like a big deal, but when I open 20-30 files, Photoshop stays frozen for a good minute. I believe the issues lies in the Mac itself. Can someone recommend a way to isolate the issue? Is there something in Terminal I can monitor?
On the side note, everything else with the new iMac has been fantastic. The display, processing power (far faster than my Mac Pro, and USB 3 and Thunderbolt are a welcome upgrade to the USB 2 I was limited to).

Ok, it turns out, Font Agent Pro 4 was causing the lock-up. I've upgraded to Font Agent Pro 5 and the issue is resolved.

Photoshop CS5 freezing in Windows XP, re-installed twice

Hi There:
My Photoshop CS5 freezes the first time I try to open a JPEG file. As soon as I choose the Open command and try to being in a jpeg file it locks up.
I had uninstalled and re-installed the program twice now with no change. My operating system is Windows XP Pro
Any suggestions what I sghould try?

Photoshop CS5 Freezes for few seconds on Long Press on Tools.

Hi,
I am experienceing this issue on Macbook Pro Core2Duo and Macbook Air 13", bought 3 days ago.
When I long press any tool in toolbox to expand it, photoshop CS5 freezes for few seconds.
Any idea?
PS: I have tried both CS5 and CS5.1 on OSX Lion 10.7.2.

I found the solution on Adobe's forums. Thanks to the adobe guys.
I have a program "RightZoom" installed. Needed to upgrade that to the latest "Lion Compatible" version.

Photoshop CS5 freezes for several seconds in Windows 7

I am using Photoshop CS5.1 Extended with Windows 7 Professional 64 bit with 6GB of RAM. Everything worked good until about a week ago. Now when I am working in the program all of the sudden everything freezes - the window, menus, everything. The only thing that will move is the mouse cursor which is the tool that I was last using before the freeze occured. I have to stop and wait for about 30 seconds then Photoshop unfreezes and starts working again until the next time it freezes. Turning OFF the Open GL in the Performance Preferences doesn't help. I have also deleted the preference file with no help.
Does anyone have an idea why this is happening and how to fix it?

Curt's advice is right on.
An overall freeze could indicate the display driver is crashing and being reset by the OS. Look in the Windows Event Logs (System and Application) for more evidence of what's happening specifically. If you're having a driver crash it will cause an event to be logged.
Also check to see if you have any network or hardware resources that were once available but are now missing (e.g., a mapped drive to a server that's not online or a printer that's been unplugged).
