Photoshop CS6 drop in performance
Appearntly Photoshop CS6 is horrible with large files.
I don't really have the weakes gear, and I do extremely heavy designs, but even opening an avarage file (90MB PDF file) and trying to pan/zoom around is impossible. Not talking about selecting an object and move it around - takes decades to do so.
My gears is:
CPU - i7 3930K 3.2Ghz
MOBO - ASUS P9X79 Deluxe LGA2011
RAM - G.Skill 32GB DDR3 1600Mhz Ripjaws Z Edition Quad Channel CL10-10-10-30
GPU - PNY Quadro 4000 2GB GDDR5
SSD - OCZ Vertex 3 120GB
OS - Windows 7 Pro 64bit SP1
Asus BIOS is updated and all setting or OK.
All drivers are updated.
Windows is updated.
Temperture is good.
With CS5 everything was smooth.
As soon as I installed CS6 trial everything went to hell.
Help?
Whatever causes it, it's not something that's systemic; on my Windows 7 x64 system I saw a small increase in responsiveness between Photoshop CS5 and CS6.
Have you updated Photoshop to 13.0.1? The trial installer is still 13.0.0. It seems to me I recall Adobe did some things to improve this issue with the update, and I know they've promised to do even more for the next release.
There have also been some workarounds proposed, including going into the Layers panel options dialog and disabling display of layer thumbnails. It might be interesting if you'd try that and see if it helps.
Also, make sure your Performance preferences have Cache Levels set to a number larger than 1. I think the default is 4.
Make sure to close and restart Photoshop after any settings change and before testing.

By the way, I use and love OCZ Vertex 3 drives (I have 4 of them in an array). OCZ makes good hardware.

Photoshop CS6 brushes not performing as standard
Trouble with painting project with fifteen layers so far. Using CS6 from Cloud. Essentials set to painting mode. Painting in solid black on white bg creates a translucent grey about 20% of solid black. I am painting top layer with 100% black with solid round basic brush but cannot achieve full strength color. Layer position is arranged on top. Brush settings: Size 100% Flow 100%: Jitter & spacing - zero. Maximum hard, Result = grey.
As a test trial I created a new canvas with white bg and hard round brush set 100% size & flow. It paints solid black without a problem.
Conclude that there is something not right in layered project. Any ideas?Could you please post a screenshot with the pertinent Panels visible?
Do you mean »Opacity« when you state »Size«? -
I just bought Photoshop CS6 and the performance is SO SLOW that it is basically unusable for any professional production work. Everything seems to hang and feel clunky overall. I'm SO disappointed. What can I do?

How can I increase amount of RAM as needed for Photoshop CS6?
I cannot save any of my work as I am informed I do not have enough Ram available. What are my options please?
JdfraserYou didn't say if your current system capability is 32- or 64-bit and how much RAM you have. If you have fewer than 4 GB RAM you should get a quick boost by increasing it to 4 GB. As others have written, you'll need 64-bit system to increase usable RAM to ore then 4G. If you need to work within 4GB you may find some tips in Jeff Tranberry's "How to tune Photoshop CS6 for peak performance"
http://blogs.adobe.com/crawlspace/2012/10/how-to-tune-photoshop-cs6-for-peak-performance.h tml
Scroll down to the section "Key steps to optimize Photoshop CS6 performance" then see if ideas discussed from "How do I know if my system could benefit from more RAM?" through "11. Reduce patterns and brush tips" might help with your configuration and workflow. -
Performance Issues with Photoshop CS6 64-Bit
Hello -
Issue at hand: over the course of the last few weeks, I have noticed significant issues with performance since the last update to PS CS6 via the Adobe Application Manager, ranging from unexpected shut downs to bringing my workstation to a crawl (literally, my cursor seems to crawl across my displays). I'm curious as to if anyone else is experiencing these issues, or if there is a solution I have not yet tried. Here is a list of actions that result in these performance issues - there are likely more that I have either not experienced due to my frustration, or have not documented as occuring multiple times:
Opening files - results in hanging process, takes 3-10 seconds to resolve
Pasting from clipboard - results in hanging process, takes 3-10 seconds to resolve
Saving files - takes 3-10 seconds to open the dialog, another 3-10 seconds to return to normal window (saving a compressed PNG)
Eyedropper tool - will either crash Photoshop to desktop, or take 5-15 seconds to load
Attempting to navigate any menu - will either crash Photoshop to desktop, or take 5-15 seconds to load
Attempts I've taken to resolve this matter, which have failed:
Uninstalled all fonts that I have added since the last update (this was a pain in the ***, thank you Windows explorer for being glitchy)
Uninstall application and reinstall application
Use 32-bit edition
Changing process priority to Above Normal
Confirm process affinity to all available CPU cores
Change configuration of Photoshop performance options
61% of memory is available to Photoshop to use (8969 MB)
History states: 20; Cache levels: 6; Cache tile size: 1024K
Scratch disks: active on production SSD, ~10GB space available
Dedicated graphics processor is selected (2x nVidia cards in SLI)

16GB DDR3, Dual Channel RAM
2x nVidia GeForce GTS 450 cards, 1GB each

This issue is costing me time I could be working every day, and I'm about ready to begin searching for alternatives and cancel my membership if I can't get this resolved.Adobe Photoshop Version: 13.1.2 (13.1.2 20130105.r.224 2013/01/05:23:00:00) x64

I have Photoshop CS6 Extended Students and Teachers Edition. when I go into the Filter/Oil paint and try to use Oil Paint a notice comes up "This feature requires graphics processor acceleration. Please Check Performance Preferences and verify that "Use Graphics Processor" is enabled. When I go into Performance Preferences I get a notice "No GPU available with Photoshop Standard. Is there any way I can add this feature to my Photoshop either by purchasing an addition or downloading something?
Does you display adapter have a supported GPU with at least 512MB of Vram? And do you have the latest device drivers install with Open GL support. Use CS6 menu Help>System Info... use its copy button and paste the information in here.

Can't drag and drop photos into Photoshop CS6
I'm having this problem since the last time I formatted my computer, and it is really annoying.
Basically, when I try to drag an image into photoshop, the cursors changes into a circle with a slash in it (unavailable).
I can open files by right clicking and choosing "Open with -> Adobe Photoshop CS6", and I can also open with "File > Open..." (ctrl+O)
I've searched for a soltion for this and nothing worked.
This is what I've tried doing so far:
- Resetting the preferences (ctrl+alt+shift)
- Running with administative rights
- Running without administrative rights
- Making sure I have premissions for the files
- Making sure the files are not set as read-only
- Changing the scratch disk option (Preference -> Performance)
None of these worked, and I'm looking for another solution...
Here are my PC specs:
OS: Microsoft Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit SP1
CPU: Intel Core 2 Quad Q8300 @ 2.50GHz
RAM: 4.00 GB Dual-Channel DDR2 @ 400MHz
Motherboard: Gigabyte Technology Co., Ltd. G31M-ES2L
Graphic Card: 1024MB GeForce GT 240 (nVidia)Here is a quote from a past post with same issue. Thread had no answer the solved problem, but most agreed it was a permission problem.

Sounds like a corrupt registry issue -- the file extensions are not correctly associated with Photoshop.
The default install adds all the registry entries, so something has gone wrong since then with the registry entries for Photoshop 64 bit.
Have you used any "system optimizer" programs, or registry cleaners? -
Photoshop CS6 Performance in Video-Animation mode?
I've just started playing with the Motion workspace in Photoshop CS6 with the goal of doing some HDTV slideshows of still images with "Ken Burns" zooms & pans & maybe other animation. I bought a training video from Infinite Skills that seems pretty good, but when I load their example files into CS6 and try to scrub around on the timeline, it takes forever to do anything other than scrubbing to the right (and that is slow). CS6 plays through their example videos well enough for non-rendered video, and I can scrub slowly to the right with the image keeping up fairly well, but when I try to scrub left, jump to the right, or click the icon to move the scrub button to the start of the video, it takes 5 seconds to 10 seconds for anything to happen. I'm running CS6 64 bit in Windows 7. My processor is an i7 920 @ 2.67 GHz, 8 GB ram, system drive is a Kingston SSD. Windows' Performance Information gives a score of 7.0 of a possible 7.9. A Passmark PerformanceTest 8.0 run gives me numbers typical of my Asus PS6 motherboard and i7 processor.
I know PS wasn't built from scratch for this kind of work, but is a 5-10 second lag to be expected every time I scrub on the timeline? There is a site named Black Viper. The guy there knew how to configure an XP computer for different purposes, and then set it back easily for everyday use. I believe that he has updated to incorporate Vista and Win7. But, the whole purpose of the story is - knowing what system resources you need for rendering video - and what resources you can temporarily suspend, and then easily restart. Many, many resources can be suspended in Win7, which frees up resources for the important and resource-hungry activity that is video rendering. If you can get on over to Black Viper, it is a very useful starting point, because he designates the normal state of your computer - so that you can put it back there again. However, as a general rule, if your computer does not need to be active on a network, a lot of the networking services can be suspended. AV and anti-spyware - once disconnected from the network - can also be shut off (but do this only after you have done a comprehensive AV and spywware sweep). Software updaters can be turned off. In fact, if you know your way to the Services section of Windows (I cannot say what the equivalent for a Mac may be...) using trial and error, switch out services - say three at a time - and then see what effect. Obviously, put them back in if it turns out they are vital to the video-processing. But yes, nothing beats extremely fast hard drives, and even an overclocked chip can help, with more like a gamers GPU to boot. This, as you will understand,is more a dedicated video editing setup, and CS6/CC are meant for a more casual approach. If you own a Honda Civic, so to speak, it will not drive like a Porsche!
If you have a modicum of computer savvy, go to www.blackviper.com and scroll down to your OS - make a copy of the table of modifications (or print) and then proceed to lock-down resource-hogging services. They can have a significant effect on processing speed. -
Photoshop CS6 Plug-ins not appearing when clicked under extension drop-down menu
I noticed that for some reason, my default extensions that come with photoshop cs6 extended and also custom installed plug-ins won't appear when clicked on. Usually you see a check mark by the plug-in if it is working and is visible on the photoshop layout as a panel. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling, which the Kuler extension worked, but only under the workspace that I opened it up for. So for example, I opened it up on Essential workspace, but it wouldn't appear when changed to painting workspace. When I close the panel from the workspace, it won't ever come back up again even when clicked on under the extension drop-down menu on any workspace. This is occuring not just on my desktop, but also on my laptop. Both are not Photoshop CC, but regular Photoshop CS6.
I don't really mess around with the extensions much, but once I found out about the painterswheel plugin, I really wanted to try it out, hence now noticing this extension issue with my plug-in..
All my plug-ins appear on the drop down menu for Windows > Extensions, so it shouldn't be a file placement problem. I have also tried the Adobe troubleshoot for plugins by uninstalling my plug-ins to see if third party plug-ins were the problem, but still my default plug-ins won't even work.I'm a little confused with what you write. There is a difference between extensions and Plug-ins. Plug-ins are installed using the plug-ins installer and extensions are installed by "Adobe Extension Manager (version)" where version is the Photoshop version and the extension package must be created for that particular Photoshop version. A CS5 package will not work in CS6 etc. Installed extensions will be listed in Photoshop under menu Windows>Extensions>List of them. Plug-in may install in the Filters menu or a place like menu File>Automate>Names. Installed Extensions that you installed should also show in the "Adobe Extension Manager (version)" window. Adobe installed extensions like Kuler and Mini Bridge do not show in the "Adobe Extension Manager (version)" window.

Photoshop CS6/CC performance with Quadro 1000M/2000M vs. Radeon HD 7970M/8970M
I am trying to find any benchmarks on how these two GPUs compare for Photoshop work. Does anybody have any pointers to information or even subjective thoughts?
I am led to believe from my research that a number of the filters in CS5 are using OpenCL. For OpenCL the Radeon 7970M is far superior to the Quadros. However, I am not able to find information on the overall performance of the Quadros vs. the Radeons for Photoshop.
The work with Photoshop will be for static images - creation of images rather than manipulation of source.
I am looking to get a Thinkpad W530, but it only comes with the Quadro GPUs. If I do get it, will I be getting a slow machine for Photoshop 2D work, assuming that the Quadro's are really targeted at 3D CAD work?I don think Photoshop will stress any GPU it supports. For Photoshop make sure Adobe tested the GPU with the version of Photoshop your using. http://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/kb/tested-video-cards-photoshop-cs5.html
http://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/kb/photoshop-cs6-gpu-faq.html
If your also going to use the machine for gaming get the fastest GPU that also works with Photoshop. I did not see Quadro 1000 listed Quadro 2000 was listed in CS6 . Radeons HD 7000 series listed in CS6 list of texted GPU.

Photoshop CS6 Performance Settings Recommendations?
I use Photoshop CS6 for Image editing.
I just purchased a new Imac 27 inch late 2012 Model with an i7 3.4Ghz Processor plus the following:
1TB Fusiion HDD
24Gb of System Ram
2GB Video Card.
This screenshot shows what I currenlty have as my setttings in the performance pane.
I'd like if possible to maximize the performace given my system spec.
Are these settings I have now optimum?
I have my scratch disc currently set to be my MacHDD
I do have a FW800 Aux1 which is not being used that has 900GB of free space.
Should I use it also?
Any suggestions on performace would be appreciatedFirst, without describing the kind of Photoshop work you do, no one is going to be able to do more than guess wildly at how to set up your system. There are some general guidelines, some of which C.P. has stated. Do you edit huge documents? Long editing sessions? Bunches of documents at once?
Photoshop does not use multiple scratch disks simultaneously as far as I can tell. It's more of a "this one ran out of space, let me fall back to the next entry in the list" kind of thing. So there's no real performance advantage to specifying two drives as far as I can see - just convenience if you have limited space.
When pushing up against limits, it's good to allow the OS to have full access to the system HDD (e.g., for its own swapping) while Photoshop has concurrent access to its own, separate scratch drive. This way the I/O activity of both doesn't interfere and cause thrashing (lots of seeking, greatly reduced throughput).
What's a "Fusiion HDD"? I ask because C.P.'s "don't use the system drive for scratch" advice, while right on point with a standard HDD, may not be as pertinent with a drive that has near-SSD performance via an SSD caching scheme. Since SSDs have near-zero latency (no seeking), and usually quite a lot more throughput capacity than HDDs, it's less important to keep the OS and Photoshop from interferining with one another.
With 24GB of RAM you're probably not having to do a terribly large amount of scratch file writes/reads anyway. Are you experiencing slowdowns?

Photoshop CS6 Slow Performance
Hi guys,
Wonder if you can help me with this one. I've noticed recently my copy of CS6 has become very slow and laggy.
Symptoms:
Unresponsive
Repeated messages about "Out of memory"
GUI unresponsive, everything goes grey
Temp Fix:
I've messed around with the memory settings to see if that helps, but it doesn't seem to do a great deal. I've had it set to 90% and 50% and get much of the same results.
Normally when the program hangs or becomes unresponsive, I have to close it via Task Manager
System:
Windows 7 Pro
2.4Ghz Quad Core CPU 64Bit
4GB RAM
Photoshop CS6 13.1.2 x64
As I write this my CPU usage is 5% and physical RAM is 66% - surely there is more than enough to keep Photoshop ticking over?
Any thoughts on how I can sort this out would be appreciated. It is becoming very annoying that I can't use the product properly and have to keep repeatedly restarting it.In case Chris wasn't clear enough, Photoshop doesn't act like that without something being wrong with your particular installation.
You say this happened recently... What's different from when it worked?
One additional piece of advice for something to try: Clear your preferences to defaults by pressing and holding Control - Shift - Alt immediately upon cold starting Photoshop. If you're quick enough to get the keys down - and you have to be very quick - Photoshop will prompt you to confirm the deletion of the current preferences. If it just comes up without prompting you weren't quick enough.

Photoshop CS6 drawing performance and MBP Retina 15 with Nvidia GT 650M
Hi, I've noticed that to get a significantly better drawing performace in Photoshop CS6 with a MacBook Pro 15" Retina Mid 2012 Nvidia GeForce GT 650M one has to start Photshop with a screen resolution set to "Best for Retina" then once Photoshop is running, to change the resolution to "Scaled" 1650x1080 or 1920x1200. Why ?
Are you aware of that isssue?
Any settings I should look at ?
Thanks for your helpThanks. I've noticesd another detail that might help:
After doing the steps I mentionned earlier, the HUD colorpicker, the smooth zoom and the "red" brush shape that shows how hard the brush is, are no longer working/displayed.
Maybe the rescaling stops some GPU enabled features of the interface, thus leaving more "power" to the painting tools? -
Need still image export in QT Pro 7.7 that opens in Photoshop CS6
Using Quicktime 7.7 Pro I export a still image from an .avi movie file and choose movie to picture. In options, I am given a choice of various formats including jpeg and png. But, the file extension still says .pct no matter what format option is chosen.
I discovered today when I upgraded my old photoshop CS3 to CS6 that .pct format is no longer supported in the new version of Photoshop CS6. ( Ouch. )
How can I export a still image in Quicktime Pro 7.7 so that it is readable in the Photoshop CS6?
Thanks in advance for any solutions.
ThomasHow can I export a still image in Quicktime Pro 7.7 so that it is readable in the Photoshop CS6?
Basically you can't. As you noted above, the QT 7 Pro option only exports a PCT file (the legacy system image file format) using your choice of compression.
You could, however, try any of a number of other options:
1) You can drag the current frame in your QT 7 Pro player to the desktop which should create a single-frame "Movie Clipping" file in the same format as your video video file. This file may or may not open directly in your updated version Photoshop as it does in my older version.
2) Another possibility would be to use the Command-C keyboard shortcut to copy the current image in the QT 7 Pro player to the clipboard and then open Photoshop and create "New" file in Photoshop using the clipboard image dimensions. When the new empty file window opens, you can use the Command-V shortcut to paste the clipboard image to the window. On my system this creates a default PSD image. The major disadvantage of this approach is that if the original file was encoded anamorphically, then the image is created using the encode dimensions and you have to manually adjust the aspect ratio. (I.e., as opposed to using the work flow described above which recognizes anamorphic files and gives you the option of opening the file automatically in the correct apect.)
2) If the "Movie Clipping" will not open in your version of Photoshop, then it will open in the free MPEG Streamclip app if you have it installed. This app can then export the video frame as a JPEG, TIFF, or PNG image.
3) Another option would be to open the AVI video directly in the MPEG Streamclip, locate the frame you want and export the frame directly from the video file to a JPEG, TIFF, or PNG file as described above.
4) Probably the most used work flow for compatible video is to open the file in the QT X Player, locate the frame you want, use the Command-C shortcut to copy the image to the clipboard as a PNG image which can the be opened from the clipboard in Preview and exported to a desired image file format. Of course, AVI files are frequently "iffy" with QT X depending on the specific video compression format used to create them.
5) You can also use the Finder image capture option to capture the entire QT 7 Player image (or a portion thereof) as a PNG image (with or without a drop shadow) and then open it Photoshop where you can crop the image before performing whatever you want to do in this app.
The are probably other options but this should be enough for you play with at this time.
