If you didn't tell it to migrate, then it won't migrate anything.
It just does a quick check at launch to see if there is a previous version, then asks you if you would like to migrate presets from that previous version. It only does any significant work if you tell it to migrate the old presets.
It is remotely possible that even the quick check for old versions could take a while if there was something wrong with your disk or volumes mounted on your system - but I haven't seen that happen.

Ever since i upgraded to mountain lion, my macbook pro is really really slow
ever since i upgraded to mountain lion, my macbook pro (17" 2010 intel i7 4GB ram) is really really slow, specially at start up and shut down. any solution?
my hard drive is has about 200 GB free space, and i do regular varification for my drive. i almost regret upgrading to mountain lion :-(Depending on the software you use (and how many programs you use at once) you may need to add more RAM. Shutdown with 10.8.2 is noticably longer than Lion's shutdown (and even slower than the original release of 10.8). I suggest you reboot your computer and immediately launch Activity Monitor. You want to watch two things: 1) RAM - as you use the computer over the next couple of hours after the reboot are you seeing the Page Out number increasing pretty quickly? That would be an indication that your computer is quickly using up RAM and pushing software and data into Virtual Memory to make room. This could account for the slow computer. 2) CPU - unless you are running some heavy duty software, your CPU usage may spike close to 80-90% for a few seconds but mostly hover in the 20-40% range. If it is higher than that, or if you see a single process using more than 70% constantly you may have a rogue process that is dragging the computer down.

I have been asked to set up an Icloud account by Apple.
How will having another icloud email benefit me. I have my work email which is all i require, but had to set up a @me account to get email on my Macbook.
I have a Mac computer that i upgraded to Mountain lion, a macbook pro and an iPhone 4s which has the latest software. all i want is simplicity and to have one email account which which will not duplicate everything 4 or 5 times.
My notes are duplicated, i have to delete my emails individually on all devices so whenever i put my phone on, all the emails i have deleted at work re-appear on my phone and again the same thing happens on my Macbook pro. I seem to spend all my time deleting emails 3 times.
Is there something simple in the set up of these that i am missing?
Any help would be appreciatedI have been asked to set up an Icloud account by Apple.

If you bought the MBP new 3 weeks ago, it should have come with Mountain Lion already installed. Did you update your MBP to the newly released 10.8.4 update? If not, what OS were you running before the upgrade, and what version of Mountain Lion do you have now? -
Photoshop elements 10 will not migrate to my new macbook pro/retina display. There is no CD/DVD player on this machine. Any suggestions on how to get Elements onto my machine? Yes, I have the disk(s). Am I going to have to buy an external CD/DVD player to load this one program:(
I have ordered a USB3 BluRay/DVD/CD player/burner and will use that both with my iMac ( in which the Superdrive seems to be failing ) and the MBPro Retina I just bought .

Mountain Lion on Macbook Pro ('08) - OS freezing - Should I revert to Lion?
Hello - I have an '08 Macbook Pro (the first one that used swipe gestures) that I recently updated to Mountain Lion from Lion. My computer worked fine for about a week but recently developed a concerning issue - the screen freezes and does the windows thing where if you are able to move your mouse, it covers the screen with the window you hover over. It's a giant distorted mess (see screenshot). My fix, thus far, has been to reboot, but when I do that it will sometimes get stuck in a reboot cycle (it shows the gray screen that there was an issue and says press a key to continue or wait a few seconds). It thinks, then reboots itself again.
On the off chances I actually am able to login, it is a matter of a few minutes before it starts acting up again.
Does anyone have any troubleshooting suggestions? The new macbook pro retina displays are beautiful but I was hoping to not have to buy one for awhile...
Thanks in advance!Try repairing your permissions. Go to applications then to the "other" folder then go to disk utility, on the left hand side you will see a white box. Select the second option, usually called "mac HD" with that selected click on "repair permissions" in the center towards the bottom of the screen. Wait for it to complete, then see if this fixes the issue.
How much HD space do you have left? How much RAM do you have? You may also want to try this:
PRAM:
i. Ensure the machine is powered off.
ii. Locate the following keys on your keyboard in preparation for Step 4:
‘command’ – ‘option’ – ‘P’ – ‘R’
iii. Press the ‘power on’ button.
iv. Immediately – and before the grey screen appears – hold down ‘command-option-P-R’ all together.
v. Keep them held down until you’ve heard the start-up chime twice. After you release them you should hear it again, and hopefully your Mac will boot up normally. -
Can I text to an iphone using mountain lion and macbook pro?
Just wondering if I can text from my macbook pro using mountain lion with the new messages app? What i've read seems to say that you can text to any imessages user. Does this mean that a text can go from my messages app in mountain lion on my computer to an iphone using imessage? Thanks!
Hi,
You have to have an Apple ID on Messages on the Mac to get it to start.
Once that is done it will also tend to find all the iChat Accounts you may have had.
Uploaded with Skitch!
I have several names that have "me" in the name that Messages thinks are iMessages accounts (see icons).
I also have AIM (AOL) accounts.
My Google ID is a Jabber account.
The iPhone has to be set up in Settings > Messages > Received At > Caller ID
As has been mentioned in this thread the Messages option has to be on.
A New Message icon starts things and then you chose a Contact for iMessages
Uploaded with Skitch!
It indicates if you are using iMessage or AIM or Jabber to Contact people.
The "To" spot becomes a drop down when a name is there (you can then change to an Apple ID or Phone number or Switch to an AIM Screen Name or Jabber ID if the Contact (Address Book) Card has the details
Uploaded with Skitch!
As you can see I have an @mac.com and an @me.com name logged in and could switch to AIM logins to contact "myself" as a Buddy (rather than an iMessage Contact)

Laserwriter Pro 630, Mountain Lion, and Macbook Pro
Hi,
I have a very old Laserwriter Pro 630 that I use for simple inexpensive proofing. On my old system (G4 Tower w/Leopard), it was connected via an ethernet hub.
I'm now the proud owner of a Macbook Pro Retina (with no ethernet port), and I can't figure out how (or if) I can use this printer. Can someone give me some advice on this?
Thanks,
MarkThere are certainly potential obstacles, but the "lowest common denominator" approach of a parallel to Ethernet (or wireless) solution works for me. If using a print server, the goal is to create an IP address where this printer will reside on the network. Since the LW Pro 630 is a PostScript printer, the rest is easy.
To summarize the results of the thread you linked, including the links within it, regarding this specific model LaserWriter, based on my own testing on OS X versions from Jaguar through Mountain Lion:
IOGear GUC1284B parallel to USB adapter attached to a Mac's USB port: works
The same IOGear adapter connected to an AirPort Extreme or Express USB port does not work with the LaserWriter Pro 630, though it works with other parallel printers. I was never able to determine the reason but am pretty confident I exhausted every possibility. Read my responses to Loroi near the end of this thread: USB to Parallel Cable for LW Select 360?
D-Link DP-311P and D-Link DP-G301 parallel to wireless adapters: both work. Similar parallel to wireless or Ethernet adapters ought to work as well.
Another possibility would be to use a USB to serial converter, such as the Keyspan (Tripp Lite) USA-28XG. I have not attempted this potential solution. The challenge would be to discover the LaserWriter's default serial port settings, but a good guess would be 9600-n-8-1.
Configuring the Mac to use this alternative would require no small amount of tedium with which you are well familiar I suspect the LaserWriter used a configuration utility that requires OS 9 and AppleTalk to configure its serial port, and may also have been required for the AAUI transceiver which the OP probably doesn't have. The fact this particular LaserWriter has a parallel port that requires no configuration makes this an unattractive alternative.
The disadvantage of any of the above solutions is that complete, bidirectional communication won't work, meaning the printer will not be able to inform the Mac that it's out of paper for example. If the printer is not ready the print job will patiently wait until it becomes ready. Communicating with the printer to determine details such as page count are also unavailable without Intel-coded utility software that does not exist in OS X. -
USB-3 card reader that is compatible with MacBook Pro (Retina) and Mountain Lion
Can anybody recommend a USB-3 based CompactFlash memory card reader that works with the MacBook Pro (Retina) and Mountain Lion (or, at least, Lion)?
Thanks in advance...Thanks for your reply, Clinton. But I already have two readers that are USB-2 compatible. Now I need the one like I described above. I am using only the fastest CF cards available.
I have read some user reports (on Amazon) on two readers relevant to my needs - SanDisk and Lexar - but I'm still not sure whether they are fully compatible with the Retina MacBook and Mountain Lion. As a matter of fact, I doubt it...

Slow render with Premier cs6 with macbook pro retina
I wish I could ask this question in french but when i clic on "N’hésitez pas à poster vos commentaires ou questions dans les forums dédiés." it bring me to a english page... I'm a member of adobe cloud and I'm using a macbook pro retina 15 inch, 16gig ram. I work with the camcorder HVR-V1U and adobe premiere CS6. When I make a render, trought adobe media encoder, from a HDV vidéo to a mpeg2-dvd files it takes around 11h of rendering for a 2 hours clips. The CPU only work at 8 % ! Can I solve this because now I think I should go back to my old PC with CS3 ? Thank you.
Moved from the Creative Cloud to the Premiere Pro forum. They will be able to help you here.

Problems running Photoshop CS6 under OS 10.8 Mountain Lion
Since updating the OS from 10.6.7 to OS 10.8 on iMacs (21" and 24" Intel 2.4GHz) I have experienced problems running Photoshop. The app boots up fine and I can start a project as normal, but when I click on a tool to change it's usage I get the spinning beach ball, this lasts about 5 - 10 seconds and then the tool drop down menu appears. After this, I get the beach ball appearing every few minutes as I try to work, and the only way to get Photoshop running efficiently is to close it down and then restart.
Any ideas as to the cause? I've read on forums from both Adobe and Apple that apparently there are no compatibility issues between Mountain Lion and CS6 but I never had this problem previously under Snow Leopard. The next two remedial steps would be to reset all tools by right-clicking here:
and if that does not resolve the problem, reset Preferences;
To reset Preferences:
If Photoshop is already open on your screen, close it (Quit). Then hold down Shift+Ctrl+Alt (Win) / Shift+Command+Option (Mac) on your keyboard and start Photoshop.
A dialog box will pop up asking if you want to delete the existing Preferences file (the "Settings"). Click Yes in the dialog box. The existing Preferences file will be scrapped and a new one will be created. -
Color issues in Mountain Lion with Acrobat Pro
I'm not sure I'm in the right forum, but here it goes.
Since upgrading my OS to Mountain Lion, I've noticed when viewing PDFs output from InDesign 5.5 that once in Acrobat Pro the colors look muted and inaccurate. I never saw this in Snow Leopard, hence my posting. Color in InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop CS5.5 seem just fine, it's only when a PDF is viewed in Acrobat that I see this muted color issue.
What I'm concerned with is are these problems when viewing only, or is the PDF color range itself screwed up? I do prepress work and am using an Eizo CG241 display, CS5.5 and Acrobat Pro 10.1.4.
Thanks! If you are using a calibrated display, the calibration software should set your Displays>Color profile for you. Mine is set to "PA271W 0610738UA 2012-11-14 14-57", which is the name of the profile created by the calibration software. This is where color temperature, gamma, and color corrections are stored (in my case for prepress work at 5000K and 1.8 gamma).
Sorry about this long-winded posting, but I think the last few paragraphs may help make some progress, and I must first digress to get to them...
Control of color profiles embedded in my PDF files is done in Adobe Creative Suite (verson 6 at this time). I use Bridge to synchronize the suite. North American Web/Internet is for files going to the web and I apply sRGB to those files when opening them (if they aren't already sRGB). North American Prepress 2 is for files going to a printing press, and I apply Adobe RGB to files when opening them (if they aren't already Adobe RGB).
Files for the web are saved using Photoshop's "Save for Web..." command, which is set to sRGB and uses the Document Profile for a preview.
Files for print are converted to CMYK and placed in InDesign or Illustrator, where they are saved as PDF/X-1a files, which are CMYK and those values are preserved (not color managed). I should note that before that point, during client proofs, the files are placed as Adobe RGB. They are replaced by CMYK images before making a PDF/X-1a file for the printing press. Either way, the files display correctly and identically (except for any color gamut differences) regardless of color mode or application. (This is color management working correctly.) Except for Acrobat and Reader.
Until CS6, all PDF files would be displayed by Acrobat identically to how they appeared in the originating application (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign). Now all PDF files are darker, more drab, and shifted slightly toward blue.
Here's the weird thing. No matter what I do, even if I start with an sRGB file and save it as a Photoshop PDF using the Save for Web command, so it has been sRGB throughout the process, when the PDF file is viewed in Acrobat or Reader it is darker, more drab, and shifted slightly toward blue.
My first hypothesis was that Acrobat and Reader were applying sRGB to everything. But that appears to be wrong. Now I'm thinking that it's my calibrated display profile that is being ignored. And since it is calibrated for 5000K and 1.8 gamma, that is what explains the big shift in darkness, vividness, and color. It may be that the display profile, not the embedded color profile, is all that matters!
If so, a good experiment would be to calibrate one of your displays for 5000K and 1.8 gamma. If Acrobat and Reader are ignoring the display profile, you should see a very obvious difference in displayed PDF files compared to displays using 6500K and 2.2 gamma (which is just about everyone these days, except for publishing professionals who do exacting print work).

After entering my pw at the login screen, I get a black screen
This started after battery got fully drained accidentally.
It has happened in the past after battery gets fully drained accidentally, and I have to reboot several times until it boots properly.
This time I tried rebooting several times but it never booted properly
Tried booting into Safe Mode, by restart Mac while holding down theShift key past the chime, until I saw the Apple logo and spinning gear. I did NOT see the spinning gear change into a solid progress bar. I also did NOT see OS X login window with the words “Safe boot” in bright red.
I Tried booting Mac’s recovery system, by restarting Mac and holding down Command + R during boot. I ran Disk Utility and theVerify Disk option did NOT find any errors. Interestingly only 16 mb was found to be available on the 250 GB disk. Note: I have filevault2 encryption enabled

I do have time machine backup.
Do I need to erase the harddisk and restore from time machine, just reinstall OS Mountain lion from internet, get a new hard disk, or do something else.
I don't know if I need to boot this Macbook from an external disk/drive and copy data or fix some minor error
PLEASE HELP !
I would highly appreciate it.Try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account. Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up after waiting 10 seconds. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.
