Photoshop CS6 - Pasting Smart Objects from InDesign CS6 look awful

Since upgrading from CS5 I'm having a huge problem using Smart Objects.
What:
Smart Objects pasted from InDesign into Photoshop are pixelated and corny beyond belief. Originating material placed in InDesign is hi-res (e.g. 600ppi) but when pasted in PS it looks crappy.
How:
Selecting an image in InDesign and pasting it in PS in a 72ppi file.
Typically I need to copy elements from previous art in ID and re-compose and use for web.
Why:
Can't seem to fix it. Have tried with Anti-Aliasing both on and off to no avail. None of the Image Interpolation settings affect this either.
Only solution is to scale the placed Smart Object to something like 400% where it suddenly looks nice again, rasterize and then scale it back down.
Theory:
Smart Object scaling is flawed in PS CS6.
Note: All scaled images in InDesign already look gritty and awful. Even with Display Performance: High Quality set (using default settings). Seems to me like CS6 scaling is b a d.
Anyone else seeing this?
Thanks
Image 1: Smart Object rasterized at same size as placed. (ouch. awful.)
Image 2: Smart Object Scaled to 400%, rasterized and then scaled back to original size (yum yum, like it used to be without up-rasterize-down-scaling)

That does not resolve the anti-aliasing issue in CS6 - it still looks rather bad.
The anti-aliasing sampling method applied to smart vector objects is just extremely bad looking. And it is not merely an issue in Photoshop: exporting artwork from Illustrator at web/screen resolution using the web export is absolutely abysmal looking (not other word applies here, unfortunately).
I explain more about this issue here: http://forums.adobe.com/message/6002543#6002543
The best option is to blow up the artwork, rasterize, and then scale down with bicubic or bicubic automatic, depending. But even then you will not achieve the same quality that can be attained with other tools that, for example, support catmul rom and mitchellnetravali for downsampling.
Anyway, Adobe applications are very weak when it comes to proper downsampling and file size optimization for web and screen graphics. You're better off looking someplace else.

  • Pasting Smart Object from Illustrator to Photoshop Creates "Blank" Object

    Hi,
I just upgraded to Creative Suite 5.5 from CS 4. Prior to the upgrade, I was able to select objects in Illustrator, copy, and paste them as smart objects in photoshop without any problem. Now when I paste them Photoshop correctly recognizes the dimensions, but when the object is inserted it's completely empty. I've checked the fill and opacity for the pasted layer (both are at 100%). I've applied color overlay blending effects but there's nothing there. It's totally empty. I'm able to copy and paste images from my web browsers and from the system (Mac Lion) clipboard by taking screenshots, but I cannot paste anything from Illustrator. It's just empty.
Note: I've been using Photoshop for over a decade, so it's not a "I don't know how to copy-and-paste" issue. I've also confirmed that Illustrator's file handling and clipboard preferences are set to PDF and AICB. I've also done a complete uninstall of CS 4 and CS 5.5 (including deleting preferences), and reinstalling CS 5.5. But it hasn't fixed the problem.
I've Googled this for almost an hour without any luck at finding a solution or even anyone who's having this problem. Anyone out there who can shed some light on what the solution might be?

Yes >>Preserve Appearance and Overprints<< is checked.
Attempts to paste into other applications result in the same empty box. (I hadn't tried this before, so thank you, this makes me think it might be an Illustrator problem rather than Photoshop, but read on. Something isn't right with my CS 5.5.)
Nothing peculiar about the copied content. I've tried numerous AI files with simple vector images that I've copied as smart objects before.
You can't double click the empty SO object, because it's literally empty. It makes an empty layer in Photoshop. (But, when you make a new file or paste into another application, it does see the correct width/height of the copied object - but then it fails to paste it.)
I've tried placing the AI file in Photoshop and it says "Could not place because of a program error." Is there something wrong with the way my CS 5.5 install is handling vector objects?

  • Pasted smart objects are distorted in CS6

Any time I paste an object from AI into PS, it's getting horizontally squashed. Here's an example:
    1. 12x12 pixel circle in Illustrator, aligned to pixel grid.
    2. Pasted into Photoshop as a Smart Object, it's visibly distorted (12x11), but the W/H is inaccurately labeled 100%.
    3. After pasted, if I select Edit > Transform > Scale, now the starting W/H are shown with the accurate distorted values.
This is driving me nuts. Can anyone suggest a fix, or is this a bug?

You could be correct that the bad AA is a Mac-only Ps problem. We need more participants to see if any Windows user is affected.
An Illustrator-saved AI or PDF placed into Ps results in the very same bad rendering as a paste. A slightly different but similarly bad AA arises when the placed file is an Illustrator-saved EPS.
The AA bug appears to be related to Photoshop's rasterizing of vector files rather than something to do with the clipboard.
There is no improvement by pasting into a new document created with clipboard dimensions. I had already tried that and I've rechecked now.
Here's an example comparing Ps CS5.1 and CS6 using the same clipboard content. The very same results happen when placing the design as a vector file in the two versions of Ps.
    1. Object in Illustrator CS5.1 that's copied to clipboard.
    2. The transformation opportunity of the paste into Ps CS5.1. The height is short by a pixel.
    3. After correcting the height and committing. A perfect rasterization.
    4. The transformation opportunity of the paste into Ps CS6. The height is correct.
    5. After committing. A terrible rasterization with gray pixels which should be white.
Other examples will result in the height being initially wrong in Ps CS6 and the height being initially correct in CS5, which is the opposite of this one, and the rendering being differently bad in each version of Ps.

  • Opening photo from bridge into photoshop converts to smart object

Instead of opening the psd-file normally from bridge into photoshop the file converts to smart object.
I used to work with CS3 where double-clicking in Bridge on a psd-file would open it in Photoshop. Now, when I double click in Bridge (CS6) it opens a "quick time pro" file, which I definitely don't want. When I use the right mouse to "place in Photoshop" it does so, but then automatically converts the file into a smart object, which I don't want either. What need I do to open a psd-file in Bridge as normal psd-file in Photoshop?
    Thanks in advance for help.

    Hi C. Pfaffenbichler
yes, there is a "Photoshop Document" in the list, but it has not
association. when I click on the little arrow on that line it "searches"
and shows all the files in the "program X86" on the C-drive. but I don't
know what to associate it with, or said differently, I don't know what file
in "programX86" to associate it with.

  • Send a raw photo from lightroom to photoshop as a smart "object"

how to send a raw photo from lightroom to photoshop as a smart "object" not a flat "image" so it does not flatten the image but so I still get all the adjustments i have made in lightroom to show up in photoshop?

Select the image in Lightroom, choose 'Edit in' from Photo menu then choose 'Open as Smart Object in Photoshop'. The file will transfer to Photohop (Ps) complete with Lr applied edits which can be refined in Camera Raw by double clicking on icon in the Ps Layers panel (see screen shot).

  • Prevent non-global swatches in Smart Objects from disappearing?

After placing an Illustrator file in Photoshop as a Smart Object, then double-clicking the object in Photoshop to edit it, the only swatches that remain in the Swatches panel are global ones. All the other swatches have been removed. (This is with the embedded file that opens; the original is unaffected.)
I assume this is by design, but has anyone figured out a way of preventing it from happening, other than tediously changing every swatch to global before doing the embedding? And yes, I can always re-load the swatches afterwards, but that's also an extra step I'd like to avoid.
This is all CS6 in Windows 8.1.

Changing all swatches to global is easy. Use shift to select the first and last swatch, double click one, and check to global.
If color type is blank as above you will need to set a common color type, for global to hold.

  • Illustrator Application Window Resizes When Opening Smart Object from PSD

Hi All, I've taken a vector graphic created in AI CS4 and pasted it into my PSD CS4 doc as a smart object. When the original AI file was created the application window was set as I preferred it, filling my screen. When I double click the Smart Object in PSD to edit it back in Illy, the window that contains the application has been switched off of the fill screen mode and is quite a bit smaller. I know it's small but now I have to click the maximize icon in the application bar to get Illy to fill the screen again. It wouldn't be so bad once, but the application window resizes itself every time I punch back into the smart object from PSD.
Any ideas on how I can get the AI environment from switching around on its own??
Win 7, CS4, all patches current, Dual 22" montiors
    thnx,
    jeff

I just want to point out that when you open the smart object of course it is not the same file as the original but an embedded copy of it.
That might also have something to do with this issue and might also be a photoshop issue with the smart object and one reason might be that Photoshop is see the image as resolution and Illustrator sees it as a dimension and the teams might be able to do something about this but might not actually be aware of it unless you file a report even if it is not a bug it would then be a feature request.
They might not be able to do anything about it but then there might be a clever engineer with an idea, so it might be worth the report.

  • Batch converion to PS smart objects from ACR 4.2

I want to open a bunch of raw files in ACR 4.2 from Bridge and create PhotoShop smart objects from them. I tried to do this by selecting the files in Bridge and opening them all in ACR. This is where I got stuck.
    - If I click "Open Object" one file is opened in Photoshop and I can save it as a Smart Object. This works but is very slow for 50-100 images. Also, I found a bug that truncates the filename so I have to manually fix each one.
    - If I click "Save Image" the images save as regular images, not as smart objects. The "Save Image..." button apparently saves only regular images, not smart objects, and I can't find any way to change the label to "Save Object..." or otherwise change the mode.
I've set the options at the bottom to "Open in PhotoShop as Smart Objects" (as I said, the Open command will create the smart object) but can't anyway to make the "Save Image" command actually save objects.
Is there a way to do this or is it a limitation with smart objects in ACR?
Environment: PS CS3, ACR 4.2, Bridge 2.1, Windows XP 64 bit with all updates installed for each.

Sorry, I guess I need to explain better.
I wrote a script to do this, but here is this portion of the workflow:
    1. Open CR2 file in ACR and make adjustments.
    2. Open as Smart Object in PS.
    3. Script Events Manager activates this script on Document Open, checks to see if it was opened as a Smart Object. We'll assume it did.
    4. The script asks me if I want to make another layer. I pick yes. The script copies the SO layer, sets an inverted mask, and opens to edit settings in ACR again.
    5. I adjust the settings for that layer in ACR and click OK.
The script will keep looping between 4 and 5 as long as I pick YES.
This gives me more local control of areas. If I want to bring out eyes a bit, I can up contrast, saturation, sharpness, brightness, exposure, or whatever looks best for the eyes in ACR, then unmask the eyes as much as I want on that layer in Photoshop. There is more data to pull from in the RAW file vs trying to do the same thing within Photoshop.
Opening as a regular image file then converting to a SO doesn't give me the same control. I would have to reopen the file separately, make the adjustments in ACR, open to PS then copy that document and paste as a new layer in the original.
Duplicating the document might work also, but I can also just save as .psd at that point since I'd have to know the path name by then anyway. I'll give that a try, though, and see if it might work better. The only catch with the save part is it slows me down waiting for it to write the file and if I have 5+ SO layers, it takes awhile. Once I unmask where I want, I flatten to a rasterized layer and continue.
    Thanks

  • Import into photoshop as layered smart objects

is there a way to import images into mulitiple images into photoshop as smart objects from bridge?
    Thanks

I tried to using the ACR export setting: 'open as Smart Objects in PS' and
hit done, revert to Bridge and with Tools - load to layers.
It seemed the obvious route for me but it did not work sadly enough.
However using the load to layers tools gives you the option to select the
layers in the file and then convert to smart objects, only you have to do it
    one by one I'm afraid.

  • Vector smart object from PS to AI

    Hi...
    System: Win XP, CS4
Is it possible to copy a vector smart pbject from PS to AI? Note from PS to AI? HAve tried dragging and dropping... it doesn't seem to work.

If I'm understanding your original question, this answer is not correct. I had the same question as your original. "copying a vector smart object from PS to AI?"
This is the problem I was having and I only found one way to solve it. Would love it if someone could give me a quicker workflow. My solution seem tedious.
    RECAP:
Problem: Vector object was originally created in photoshop and I want to bring it into AI as vector art.
    Answer:
    1. Convert the "vector object" in Photoshop to a "Smart Object" by selecting the layer, then go to Layer > Smart Objects > Convert to Smart Object
    2. Double-click on the smart object's icon in the layers palette. This opens the object in a new Photoshop window
    3. Choose File > Export > Paths to Illustrator... (Note: With the smart object layer selected, you can switch over to the "Paths" tab and see your object's editable path and name)
Again, I may have misunderstood your original question, but what I've listed here is the only way I've been able to bring a vector object originated in Photoshop over to Illustrator. Pain in the ***.

  • Cannot open raw image as smart object from ACR 8.4

       Hi
I just noticed that I am not able to open an image as a smart object from ACR 8.4. The tooltip says I can by holding down the shift key but doing so has no effect. I reset all my preferences to make sure but that hasn't fixed the problem.

I thought it was the Alt (Opt) key that did that.  I'll go check
No, you are right.  It is Shift, and it is working OK for me with 8.4 Windows 7

Bought a new Canon MG7540 printer to replace the old HP A618. When printing vector objects from Illustrator, they look like graphics from dandy (8 bits) ... no smooth, all cubes ... if do raster than print perfectly.  Who knows how to treat it? No well to rasterize vector before each printing. OS - MacOs 10.10.

Have you read the User's Guide for that printer?  Odds are you will get reasonable prints.  However, it is a photographic printer.  That said, it should print excellent quality photographic files.  To get smooth lines in Illustrator, try Preferences > Use Anti-Aliased Artwork.  That will smoothen the output.  If, for some reason, that does not work, try Print > Save As PDF > open PDF in Reader and print from there.  Check the User's Guide for media sizes available for your particular printer.  Setup your artboard to the size page you want the image to print on.  Use View > Show Page Tiling ( to see where the page's printable area lies.  Align the page with the artboard using the Page tool.

  • Smart objects from Illustrator and Indesign dimensions problem

I have been trying to find an answer to this problem for 6 months now and surprised no one else has tried to find any answers.
When we import something from illustrator or indesign as a smart object, for some reason the objects width and height will not keep their  dimensions in proportion.
When the asset is first imported as a smart object it says the width and height are exactly 100%. However after that if you try to change the dimensions they will be out of proportion, usually the width will be 100% but the height will be out by about 1% to begin with. When you scale up, the percentages fall further and further apart. See image attached.
This has become a real problem for our workflow as the creative director insists we must  correct every layer which has this issue by typing in the sizes manually, but then this doesnt always fix the problem either depending on which version of photoshop you are using.
Why does this happen, and how can we fix it for good?
    Thanks, Chris.

I do not have the answer for I don't have illustrator and indesign.  I do have Photoshop and have notice that it try to match resolutions and maintain sizes but it may also scale placed object etc. There are some some Photoshop preferences setting that can effect some operations. Photoshop also has support for non square pixels.
Make some test if illustrator and indesign have setting for pixel aspect ratio and DPI resolution. Make sure all documents have the same pixel aspect ratio and same DPI resolution and that the vector object to be imported are not larger then the Photoshop document their being imported to.
Thanks for the suggestions, but none of these would be the answer. Illustrator is Vector so it does not use DPI / Pixel aspect ratios etc.

  • Imported Smart Objects from Photoshop to After Effects

When I import an Illustrator file into After Effects, I have the option to use Continous Rasterize on that layer. However, when I paste that AI file into PS, as a Smart Object, and then import that layer as footage into AE, I do not have the option to turn on Continous Rasterize in AE. It's a Smart Object that links back to the original AI file. Shouldn't I have Continous Rasterize available to me? Do I need to set my project settings differently in PS?

Shouldn't I have Continous Rasterize available to me?
No. A layer is just a layer is just a layer. That's all AE sees from the PSD file - the rasterized layer preview. It doesn't know or care where the file originated. If you must use AI content with CR, then import it natively. Whatever you do in PS with your SO wouldn't come over to AE, anyway, once you clicked the layer switch. Read up on AE's rendering order in the help.

  • Linked Smart Objects from Photoshop CC

    Hi
I have a Photoshop file which makes use of the new Linked Smart Objects (introduced in the last major CC update). If I create a Reflow Project out of this .PSD the Linked Smart Objects are not being converted.
Am I doing something wrong or is it simply not implemented yet?
    Cheers

If that's the case then keep the main grid container at 100% and then just add two boxes inside it. The outer one also stretch to 100% and have the inner one stop on column on either side and set the max-width on that. You could also just have the inner one strech to 100% with a max-width and have the underneath one show on the side only when it get really wide. I know it feels a little akward to use the grid like that, but we only have one container that the grid is on right now so this is what we can do. Here's an example using yellow for the outer container and red for the inner.
Hope that helps and thanks again for using Reflow!
