Photoshop CS6 Performance Settings Recommendations?

I use Photoshop CS6 for Image editing.
I just purchased a new Imac 27 inch late 2012 Model with an i7 3.4Ghz Processor plus the following:
1TB Fusiion HDD
24Gb of System Ram
2GB Video Card.
This screenshot shows what I currenlty have as my setttings in the performance pane.
I'd like if possible to maximize the performace given my system spec.
Are these settings I have now optimum?
I have my scratch disc currently set to be my MacHDD
I do have a FW800 Aux1 which is not being used that has 900GB of free space.
Should I use it also?
Any suggestions on performace would be appreciated

First, without describing the kind of Photoshop work you do, no one is going to be able to do more than guess wildly at how to set up your system.  There are some general guidelines, some of which C.P. has stated.  Do you edit huge documents?  Long editing sessions?  Bunches of documents at once?
Photoshop does not use multiple scratch disks simultaneously as far as I can tell.  It's more of a "this one ran out of space, let me fall back to the next entry in the list" kind of thing.  So there's no real performance advantage to specifying two drives as far as I can see - just convenience if you have limited space.
When pushing up against limits, it's good to allow the OS to have full access to the system HDD (e.g., for its own swapping) while Photoshop has concurrent access to its own, separate scratch drive. This way the I/O activity of both doesn't interfere and cause thrashing (lots of seeking, greatly reduced throughput).
What's a "Fusiion HDD"?  I ask because C.P.'s "don't use the system drive for scratch" advice, while right on point with a standard HDD, may not be as pertinent with a drive that has near-SSD performance via an SSD caching scheme.  Since SSDs have near-zero latency (no seeking), and usually quite a lot more throughput capacity than HDDs, it's less important to keep the OS and Photoshop from interferining with one another.
With 24GB of RAM you're probably not having to do a terribly large amount of scratch file writes/reads anyway.  Are you experiencing slowdowns?

  • Set "Scale To Fit Media" as default in Photoshop CS6 print settings on OSX

Quite frequently my boss will email 10 to 30 images to me to print from his camera. Is there a way to setup Photoshop CS6 print settings so that "Scale To Fit Media" is the default. I tried to create an action and then through Bridge select a folder and Batch send the files to Open-Print-Close. Since images are never received 8.5"x11" it would be convenient to have this as a default. Since the print settings revert, or aren't defaulting to "settings last used", my batch attempt was unsuccessful. I know I could edit my action to adjust image size to page dimensions, but thought a way to edit the Print settings default must be out there somewhere. (Using MacBook Pro OSX 10.8.4) Any Suggestions?

Unfortunately "Scale to Fit Media" isn't a toggle. But let's try a workaround.
You can create an Image Size action where you will scale the picture to either 8.5 inches wide or 11 inches high, whichever works best for you. First be sure "resampling" is turned off under Image > Image Size.
You would open an iimage, then create an new action, title it "Letter 11 inches" and that's when the recording starts.
Enter 11 inches as the Height, click OK and then stop recording.
This is a quick and dirty action and assumes all pictures are portrait and not landscape. It may just work for you.
You should be able to include it in your batch processing.

  • NUMA and Photoshop CS6 Performance on Multiprocessor Machine

I've been doing a bit of experimenting with the various performance settings in my BIOS in my dual processor Precision T5500 Workstation running Windows 7 x64.
One of the settings is SMP / NUMA - Symmetric MultiProcessing vs. Non Uniform Memory Access.
Since I have two processors, the motherboard offers the choice of mapping the blocks of RAM to the processors in two different ways - the first being every other memory block to each processor, the second being each processor gets one big block and the operating system tries to assign threads to processors so that they more often access the RAM that's tied directly to that processor.
I have been running up to now with the more generic setting - SMP.  But today I decided to try out the NUMA setting.  Since the Windows x64 operating systems since XP x64 have been capable of intelligently allocating memory in the NUMA environment, there is some promise of performance improvement.   But the question, in the chaotic world of multithreading in Windows, is how much?
Overall, having tested Photoshop today with this new setting, I've seen generally positive performance improvements from this setting, with about a 10% to 20% speed improvement in most Photoshop operations, and notably several operations showed larger jumps in performance.
For example, my run time for the Photoshop benchmark at http://clubofone.com/speedtest/ went down from a best of 12.8 seconds to 11.2 seconds.
Opening a large 8000 x 8000 pixel 1.7 GB test file went down from 21.6 to 19.4 seconds.
A fairly large improvement was seen in responsiveness in dragging very large, complex layers around.  Dragging one of the layer groups in the 8000 x 8000 pixel test file went from 5 screen updates per second to about 8 (hard to count, but it got pretty smooth).
Painting with a 5000 pixel soft brush across the 8000 x 8000 pixel image went down from 6.4 seconds to 5.0 seconds.
I haven't really found anything that ends up running slower.
If you've got a modern multi-processor machine and are running Windows x64, and you have the option to set up Non-Uniform Memory Access, I recommend using this setting.

Here is the email I got from Wacom.
This is the person that contacted me after I sent them an email
    Dick,
If you downloaded and installed the latest Mac OS X driver, it will not work with your Intuos2 tablet.  If you OS X is 10.6+, here are driver directions to follow for a clean install and a link to the last driver:
Open your Applications folder and locate any Tablet or Wacom Tablet folders you have
Use the Utility in each of these folders and click ‘Remove’ under ‘Tablet Software’
Once the software is removed, restart the computer
After restarting, download and install the latest 6.20 driver from:http://cdn.wacom.com/U/drivers/mac/pro/WacomTablet_6.2.0w4.dmg
As always, make sure your tablet is connected directly to your computer.
Avoid using USB hubs, keyboard/monitor ports, or docking stations with the tablets, as they can cause inconsistent behavior.

  • Photoshop CS6 Performance in Video-Animation mode?

I've just started playing with the Motion workspace in Photoshop CS6 with the goal of doing some HDTV slideshows of still images with "Ken Burns" zooms & pans & maybe other animation.  I bought a training video from Infinite Skills that seems pretty good, but when I load their example files into CS6 and try to scrub around on the timeline, it takes forever to do anything other than scrubbing to the right (and that is slow).  CS6 plays through their example videos well enough for non-rendered video, and I can scrub slowly to the right with the image keeping up fairly well, but when I try to scrub left, jump to the right, or click the icon to move the scrub button to the start of the video, it takes 5 seconds to 10 seconds for anything to happen.  I'm running CS6 64 bit in Windows 7.  My processor is an i7 920 @ 2.67 GHz, 8 GB ram, system drive is a Kingston SSD.  Windows' Performance Information gives a score of 7.0 of a possible 7.9.  A Passmark PerformanceTest 8.0 run gives me numbers typical of my Asus PS6 motherboard and i7 processor.
I know PS wasn't built from scratch for this kind of work, but is a 5-10 second lag to be expected every time I scrub on the timeline?

There is a site named Black Viper. The guy there knew how to configure an XP computer for different purposes, and then set it back easily for everyday use. I believe that he has updated to incorporate Vista and Win7. But, the whole purpose of the story is - knowing what system resources you need for rendering video - and what resources you can temporarily suspend, and then easily restart. Many, many resources can be suspended in Win7, which frees up resources for the important and resource-hungry activity that is video rendering. If you can get on over to Black Viper, it is a very useful starting point, because he designates the normal state of your computer - so that you can put it back there again. However, as a general rule, if your computer does not need to be active on a network, a lot of the networking services can be suspended. AV and anti-spyware - once disconnected from the network - can also be shut off (but do this only after you have done a comprehensive AV and spywware sweep). Software updaters can be turned off. In fact, if you know your way to the Services section of Windows (I cannot say what the equivalent for a Mac may be...) using trial and error, switch out services - say three at a time - and then see what effect. Obviously, put them back in if it turns out they are vital to the video-processing. But yes, nothing beats extremely fast hard drives, and even an overclocked chip can help, with more like a gamers GPU to boot. This, as you will understand,is more a dedicated video editing setup, and CS6/CC are meant for a more casual approach. If you own a Honda Civic, so to speak, it will not drive like a Porsche!
If you have a modicum of computer savvy, go to www.blackviper.com and scroll down to your OS - make a copy of the table of modifications (or print) and then proceed to lock-down resource-hogging services. They can have a significant effect on processing speed.

  • May i know the right photoshop cs6 color settings to print black and white?

    hi
    in photoshop cs6 64bit under windows 7 sp1 64bit i got
    gray Dot gain 15%
    spot  Dot gain 15%
i did a clean install of photoshop cs6 , i guess they are the dafault
may i know if they are the right settings ? i print with my printer and in a lab with an epson printer
    thanks

Ask the lab but I'd be shocked if they asked you for a grayscale document, assuming this Epson is for output of photographic images
they work with psd files and jpg
(but the when i save a photo edited with for example an adjustament layer(black&white) photoshop convert it in a grayscale image ,isn't it?
but photoshop should warns about mismatch profile ,should it? or does it work only with color space
Dot gain would account for whatever dot gain you're aiming for on the press, so you'd have to ask.
Gamma would be used for output to an emissive display, so something like 2.2 to mimic sRGB behavior might be one option
    . but may i ask a question?
because i guess i'm confused now
Gray and Spot settings are related only to convert from rgb to mode grayscale
or these settings influence what i see in the monitor when for example i add a black and white adjustament layer?
by the way gray and spot set both at dot gain 20% , are the dafault?
    thanks

  • Would upgrading from 32bit to 64bit make a big difference in photoshop CS6 performance?

I am working with CS6 on the windows XP 32 bit system with the max RAM of 4GB.  I am continuously having RAM issues when saving and/or opening files.  I have been told that changing to a 64 bit operating system will fix these issues.  Does anyone have any advice or recommendations?  And if I choose to go from XP to Windows 7, which version do I need Home, professional or premium?

If your computer isn't particularly old and apparently has 64 bit capability, I would definitely look into going with an all-new 64 bit OS.
There are those of us running Photoshop in Windows 7 x64 with great success.
And RAM is incredibly cheap right now.  I'd suggest going up to 16 GB if you can, even if it means replacing all the RAM you currently have.
Something to keep in mind is that Windows 8 is going to be released this Fall, and it will be be priced at $39.95 for an upgrade (yes, even an upgrade to XP).
However, if you liked XP over its successors, you may dislike Windows 8 even more.  I've already written a book on how to tweak and augment Windows 8 to be a work-oriented system because out of the box it's not anything like its predecessors - the desktop isn't where you start, and when you do find your way to it to run what Microsoft considers "legacy" Win32 code there's not even a Start button.
If you really want to start talking about pushing performance into the stratosphere, I can suggest some ways to use SSD that can help you do so, though that's still costly.

  • Photoshop CS6 Color Settings

I was disappointed to see that the CS6 More Options panel still has 8 bit dither. Why isn't it 10 bit by default ? Shouldn't Photoshop be sending 10 bit to monitors with 10 bit LUT for real wide gamut? Some printers are going beyond 8 bit now, also.

    Not following you here, Lundberg02.
The only mention of 8-bit I see in the More Options panel of Color Settings in CS6, is the box that controls whether 8-bit images use dithering when converting them from one color space to another.
What are you looking at that leads you to reference monitors, 10 bit, LUT, etc.?
What am I missing?  Or are we looking at different things?
This is just a conversion option for 8-bit images that may need dithering when converted from one color space to another one.  16-bits images do not need dithering when converted.

  • Photoshop CS6 performance on new Macbook Pro Retina Late 2013

    Hi guys,
Just bought the new 13" Macbook Pro Retina Late 2013 with 8GB RAM and 256SSD.
Installed CS6 with all patches and retina update but performance is appaling. Im editing a Nikon D800 file which I know is heavy, but when zoomed in at 100% and using the healing brush it is unusable. There is so much lag on the brush it takes a second after i lift my pen for the stroke to be finishes.
Happening in Scaled & Best for Retina screen modes.
My 2005 Core 2 Duo laptop with 4GB of ram and windows 7 did this without hiccups, so I cant believe this brand new laptop cant do it.
Any ideas? Its really unusable now.
    Cheers

  • Photoshop cs6 runs slowly

I have need having trouble with cs6 running slowly on my iMac. The computer runs fine with all other applications but will quickly run up several gigs of page outs when handling camera raw and photoshop files, it starts to creep along after a short while. Apple ran "stress tests" on the computer and everything is perfectly functional. I used to have no issues with cs5 and the computer should be able to handle the task easily. I have tried to reinstall photoshop. Any other trouble shooting ideas?

What are your Photoshop > Preferences > Performance-settings? (Posting a screenshot may save you some typing.)
How many images are you likely to have open in Photoshop simultaneously and how big are they roughly on average?
    http://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/kb/optimize-performance-photoshop-cs4-cs5.html
    Boilerplate-text:
Are Photoshop and OS fully updated and have you performed the usual trouble-shooting routines (trashing prefs by keeping command-alt-shift/ctrl-alt-shift pressed while starting Photoshop after making sure all customized presets like Actions, Patterns, Brushes etc. have been saved and making a note of the Preferences you’ve changed, 3rd party plug-ins deactivation, system maintenance, cleaning caches, font validation, etc.)?

  • How can I increase amount of RAM as needed for Photoshop CS6?

I cannot save any of my work as I am informed I do not have enough Ram available. What are my options please?
    Jdfraser

You didn't say if your current system capability is 32- or 64-bit and how much RAM you have.  If you have fewer than 4 GB RAM you should get a quick boost by increasing it to 4 GB.  As others have written, you'll need 64-bit system to increase usable RAM to ore then 4G.  If you need to work within 4GB you may find some tips in Jeff Tranberry's "How to tune Photoshop CS6 for peak performance"
    http://blogs.adobe.com/crawlspace/2012/10/how-to-tune-photoshop-cs6-for-peak-performance.h tml
Scroll down to the section "Key steps to optimize Photoshop CS6 performance" then see if ideas discussed  from "How do I know if my system could benefit from more RAM?" through "11. Reduce patterns and brush tips" might help with your configuration and workflow.

  • 3D Settings on Photoshop CS6 won't work

Recently I have been trying to use the 3D option on my Photoshop CS6 Extended, and I've looked everywhere and couldn't find a solution. I've been on the graphics processor settings and that's all greyed out,
    Can someone PLEASE help me!
    -Nathan
P.S: This is what I get in the Preferences>Performance :- (It's all greyed out!)

Nobody can tell you anything without proper system info or other technical details, but pretty obviously your system is simply not up to the task. You can try updating the graphics driver, of course, but that's about it.

  • Photoshop CS6: ACR Local Adjustment Slider Settings Retained Even When Cancelling Out of ACR

I've come across something in Photoshop CS6's ACR 7.2, which I don't think for a moment is a bug, but just what I would consider a slightly strange way of how Photoshop CS6 behaves:
When working on an image in ACR, if you select one of the local adjustment tabs, such as Graduated Filter, and move any of the sliders on the right-hand side, any values you change will be retained if pressing 'Cancel', then opening the image again in ACR and selecting the same tab. I find this surprising, as I would have thought that by pressing 'Cancel', any adjusted settings, since opening the image on this occasion in ACR, would not be retained.
Furthermore, if you open another image in ACR and select the same local adjustment tab, the same settings that you adjusted in the other image have identical slider settings in that image as well.
I can see that this behaviour could be viewed as useful, i.e. when wanting to use the same local adjustment on multiple images, as any adjustment of the local adjustment's slider settings, on their own, will have no effect unless you actually perform the selected local adjustment to the image. But, as I say, I would have expected Photoshop to simply not retain any settings you have adjusted, since opening the image on this occasion in ACR, if you don't press 'Open Image' or 'Done', and simply press 'Cancel'.
Does anyone have any thoughts about this?

Clearly since those settings are not actually going into the image, but are just preparation for the next pin to be dropped by the local adjustment brush (or are further adjustments done on the last pin selected), Adobe didn't see fit to revert them on Cancel.
That said, I have to agree; if I were to botch up a bunch of settings I had before and wanted to revert them all, the first thing that would come to my mind is to hit the [Cancel] button.
I wonder if the disparity between the ways Apple and PC software typically interacts with the user could be at the heart of this...  On PC, adjustments in a dialog are generally "staged" until an [OK] button is hit, so of course [Cancel] throws them away - while on Apple adjustments are often (by convention?) stored permanently as soon as the control is released.

  • Photoshop CS6 drop in performance

Appearntly Photoshop CS6 is horrible with large files.
I don't really have the weakes gear, and I do extremely heavy designs, but even opening an avarage file (90MB PDF file) and trying to pan/zoom around is impossible. Not talking about selecting an object and move it around - takes decades to do so.
    My gears is:
    CPU - i7 3930K 3.2Ghz
    MOBO - ASUS P9X79 Deluxe LGA2011
    RAM - G.Skill 32GB DDR3 1600Mhz Ripjaws Z Edition Quad Channel CL10-10-10-30
    GPU - PNY Quadro 4000 2GB GDDR5
    SSD - OCZ Vertex 3 120GB
    OS - Windows 7 Pro 64bit SP1
Asus BIOS is updated and all setting or OK.
    All drivers are updated.
    Windows is updated.
    Temperture is good.
    With CS5 everything was smooth.
As soon as I installed CS6 trial everything went to hell.
    Help?

Whatever causes it, it's not something that's systemic; on my Windows 7 x64 system I saw a small increase in responsiveness between Photoshop CS5 and CS6.
Have you updated Photoshop to 13.0.1?  The trial installer is still 13.0.0.  It seems to me I recall Adobe did some things to improve this issue with the update, and I know they've promised to do even more for the next release.
There have also been some workarounds proposed, including going into the Layers panel options dialog and disabling display of layer thumbnails.  It might be interesting if you'd try that and see if it helps.
Also, make sure your Performance preferences have Cache Levels set to a number larger than 1.  I think the default is 4.
Make sure to close and restart Photoshop after any settings change and before testing.
    -Noel
By the way, I use and love OCZ Vertex 3 drives (I have 4 of them in an array).  OCZ makes good hardware.

  • Performance Issues with Photoshop CS6 64-Bit

    Hello -
Issue at hand: over the course of the last few weeks, I have noticed significant issues with performance since the last update to PS CS6 via the Adobe Application Manager, ranging from unexpected shut downs to bringing my workstation to a crawl (literally, my cursor seems to crawl across my displays). I'm curious as to if anyone else is experiencing these issues, or if there is a solution I have not yet tried. Here is a list of actions that result in these performance issues - there are likely more that I have either not experienced due to my frustration, or have not documented as occuring multiple times:
Opening files - results in hanging process, takes 3-10 seconds to resolve
Pasting from clipboard - results in hanging process, takes 3-10 seconds to resolve
Saving files - takes 3-10 seconds to open the dialog, another 3-10 seconds to return to normal window (saving a compressed PNG)
Eyedropper tool - will either crash Photoshop to desktop, or take 5-15 seconds to load
Attempting to navigate any menu - will either crash Photoshop to desktop, or take 5-15 seconds to load
Attempts I've taken to resolve this matter, which have failed:
Uninstalled all fonts that I have added since the last update (this was a pain in the ***, thank you Windows explorer for being glitchy)
    Uninstall application and reinstall application
    Use 32-bit edition
Changing process priority to Above Normal
Confirm process affinity to all available CPU cores
Change configuration of Photoshop performance options
61% of memory is available to Photoshop to use (8969 MB)
History states: 20; Cache levels: 6; Cache tile size: 1024K
Scratch disks: active on production SSD, ~10GB space available

This issue is costing me time I could be working every day, and I'm about ready to begin searching for alternatives and cancel my membership if I can't get this resolved.
