Photoshop CS6: Question about Resolution when Post-Cropping Film Scans

Hopefully, somebody with more understanding than I on this topic, can help me with this.
I am about to get a film scanner I have on order, to scan in 35mm negatives. I've had one before but I had problems with the model and had to return it.
When scanning film frames, I like the idea of setting the scan area marquee, at the scanning stage, so that it scans slightly beyond the film frame edges, so that I can carefully crop to the edge of the film frame later, in Photoshop CS6, rather than setting it, at the scanning stage, and then later, when examining the film frame in CS6, maybe discovering that I have not scanned to the edge of the film frame quite enough, as I can easily zoom right into the image when in CS6, to carefully examine where the film frame edges are.
My concern about doing it like this, though, is that I may be reducing the resolution of the image. For example, say I scan a film frame in at 3600ppi, and later crop the image slightly in CS6 in order to precisely trim off any slight amount of black around the film frame edges. By cropping the film frame like this in CS6, am I reducing the image resolution of the film frame to lower than 3600ppi? As I best understand it, I do not think post-cropping like this results in any reduction in image resolution, but am I correct in thinking this?

Hi.
The scanner is a Reflecta ProScan 7200. As I said to station_two, I am in London. I understand the brand is known as 'Pacific Image' over in the US.
The scanning software I will be using it with will be 'SilverFast Ai Studio 8'.
Do take a look at this excellent review of the scanner:
http://www.filmscanner.info/en/ReflectaProScan7200.html
(I may be incorrectly assuming too much when on these forums that I am speaking exclusively with folk from the US - the way you spell 'labour' makes me think you are not from the US?)

  • Photoshop CS6 - question about 'Classroom In A Book' Lesson 4

I am teaching myself Photoshop CS6 using Adobe's "Classroom in a Book." In Lesson 4, I am supposed to be able to open the Satin Layer Style from within the Drop Shadow Style Layer. It does not work!!! When I click the Satin check box, nothing happens.
Is the book wrong or am I doing something wrong?

I will start with Item 10.
    10. ”Select the Flower layer and choose Layer>Layer style>Drop Shadow. Then change the following settings in the Structure area:
         Opacity: 60%
         Distance: 13px
         Spread: 9%
Make sure Use Global Light is selected and the Blend Mode is Multiply. Do not click OK.”
(My note: there is a picture of how the Drop Shadow Layer Style screen should look.)
    11. "With the Layer Style dialogue box still open, select Satin on the left. Then make sure Invert is selected, and apply the following settings:
Color (next to Blend Mode): Fuchsia (choose a color that compliments the flower color.
         Opacity: 20%
         Distance: 22px”
(My note: There is picture of the Satin Layer Style Screen should look.)
12 “Click OK to apply both layer styles."
(My note: When I click Satin in step 11, nothing happens. In fact clicking on any box in the left column of the Drop Shadow Style Layer does nothing!)

  • I purchased my photoshop cs6 extended about 2 years ago when I was enrolled in college.  I graduated and I'm about to enroll to get my BA.  My question is, if I want to change the computer where my photoshop is located or if I want to use it on my laptop

I purchased my photoshop cs6 extended about 2 years ago when I was enrolled in college.  I graduated and I'm about to enroll to get my BA.  My question is, if I want to change the computer where my photoshop is located or if I want to use it on my laptop and my desktop, do i have to wait until I enroll again or do I have to purchase the product again in order to put it on another computer?

Well that does change the story. If you purchased a PC version of CS6, the license is PC only. It can only be installed on a second PC for your own use.
If you buy a Mac, you would either buy another $350 copy of Photoshop Mac, or agree to a swap, that is exchange the PC license for a Mac license, giving up all rights to the PC license.
If you have the disposable income for it, get a $350 Photoshop Extended Mac license as well.

  • Photoshop CS6 creates new layers when cropping

when I crop my image CS6 is now creating a layer.  If I check history, there is no sign that a layer was created, just cropped, however if I check under Layer, "Flatten Image" is highlighted.  How do i get rid of this, just started today.

    Rufous03,
Is Layer 0 the only layer you see in Layers panel after you crop the image or is there still a 'Background' layer under Layer 0?
In Photoshop CS6, the Crop tool has been refined. There is an option that enables you 'not' to delete cropped pixels when you crop - meaning your image data is not lost - you can go back to the original version at anytime. With this feature enabled (by default, it is - look in the menu bar on top - 'Delete Cropped Pixels' will be unchecked), your 'Background' layer of the image is simply 'Unlocked', therefore leading to 'rename' of layer as 'Layer 0'.
If you enable 'Delete cropped pixels' option, it will simply get rid of the pixel data that you're cropping out and your layer will remain as 'Background'.
    Trust this helps.

  • Adobe Photoshop CS6 has stopped working - when printing

I get the message “Adobe Photoshop CS6 has stopped working” regularly when I try to print a Photoshop document.  I end up having to recreate the document which usually then prints even though I have just dragged the layers across.  How can I resolve this?

Hi there! Because the forum you originally posted in is for beginners trying to learn the basics of Photoshop, I moved your question to the Photoshop General Discussion forum, where you'll get more specialized help.

  • Photoshop Text Blurry/Low Resolution when Printed

In photoshop I created a document that is 8.5x11, the size of standard printing paper, with a letter in a handwritten font. When I print my letter the print quality is not so great. I have resolution for the image set to 100. There is a little bit of a blur around the edges of the font and overall it is not very crisp.
If I take that same font when printed through microsoft word, it is very crisp, sharp and high quality.
What might be the disconnect between the two? Why is the same document much more crisp and clean when printed through word than through photoshop?
    Thanks

Here is a great video explaining the issue:
I would recommend a resolution at 300dpi, but that is often dependant on the image you are printing. I often set it at 300ppi for a photo quality.
Here is the link if the video doesn't display: http://psd.tutsplus.com/tutorials/tools-tips/pixels-image-size-resolution-photoshop/
I hope that helps, please post back with any questions

  • Photoshop 6 Question about purchasing on Apple website

    First off,
I am very sorry for posting this under Aperture. I have no idea where I would post a question like this and if any of you could even answer it. I will delete it once I get an answer..if I do. haha.
I want to buy Photoshop CS6. I am a student and was browing on the apple website and saw two of the same package but for two different prices. Do you know why one would be cheaper than the other? I couldn't find anything different about them... It's the two Student and Teacher Edition softwares.
    What's the difference?
Once again, very sorry for posting here.
    Thank you!

You may want to call the Apple store support to ask why they are showing two prices.
I know that currently Adobe is offering a $20 instant rebate with a supplied code through 8/26. The normal price is $249.99 minus the $20 (giving you the $229.99 price you see in the Apple store).
    Adobe link:
    http://www.adobe.com/products/photoshopextended.edu.html
Either way that is a great price if you need the full extended package.

  • Photoshop cs6 failed to initialize when trying to install

Hey, i get this really weird bug when i try to install photoshop cs6
    PDapp here http://pastebin.com/MS6UY4Mb
I tried to remove an old version with Revo uninstaller, and when trying to install that one after, it just did that
Theres the error, in Danish though, but it says:
    "An error occured
the installationsprogram could not be initialized, Download Adobe support advisor to register the problem"
The problem is, i have downloaded it, but it does not help, or fix it.. this is really annoying me, please help

    Maybe someone over at

I tried to remove an old version with Revo uninstaller,
Did you also try the Adobe Uninstaller or the Clean Script?

  • Photoshop CS6 a little 'jerky' when moving layers & resizing window (Macbook Pro Retina 650m)

As title says, when I open Photoshop CS6 and simple make a new layer and either use the type tool, it appears to be a little Sluggish/Jerky when moving the layer around.. The same applies when resizing photoshop itself.
I'm updated to the latest version of CS6 and have tried all the combinations in the 'Performance' section of Photoshop.
My Macbook Pro Retina is the 3.4ghz 650m and 8GB RAM offering (OS Mavericks). It's really annoying me as even my old laptop could run it smoothly and that was an i5 and much lower-end graphics card.
The only way I can really describe it (and i'm no tech professional) is when comparing it to silky smooth 60 fps, it looks like it's skipping frames and in term looking 'jerky'. I also use Illustrator and don't really witness the same problem with it.
I know this may have been asked quite a bit.. But I've never found the solution.. Could anybody advise me on what it potentially could be down too? (Might I add the laptop has just had a fresh install of the OS and a fresh copy of CS6)

You could check through the GPU FAQ for anything you might have missed
    http://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/kb/photoshop-cs6-gpu-faq.html
You say you have tried all settings in Performance, but I wonder what your  cache levels are set at?  If more than 1, then OK.
There's the general performance FAQ (no doubt lots of overlap)
    http://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/kb/optimize-performance-photoshop-cs4-cs5.html
Is this with all image docs, or particular ones?  For instance I have been playing with using ACR to process 32bit HDR files, and it puts a huge load on the system.

  • Photoshop CS6: Screen flickers black when using brush tool on MBP 2013

I'm experiencing a flickering black box whenever using large brush sizes on Photoshop CS6 using a Macbook Pro (16GB RAM, 2.8 GHz i7, Intel Iris, Late 2013 13") similar to what is shown on: black flickering boxes on Vimeo.  The issue stops if you: Preferences -> Performance -> Uncheck "Use Graphics Processor" and restart the program or backrev to CS6 13.0.0 (or anything before 13.0.4).
I've attempted uninstalling/reinstalling CS6, resetting NVRAM and SMC, and verified the system is all up-to-date.  When booting in Safe Mode the issue is also resolved (as it appears Graphics Processor is disabled).  There appears to have been a similar issue on the 2013 Macbook Air that Apple released a fix for (MacBook Air (Mid 2013) Software Update 1.0) but I do not see anything regarding the Macbook Pro line.  Anyone experience/resolve this issue?
I've contacted Apple Care multiple times and they say it is an Adobe issue.  And Adobe is insisting is a CPU/GPU driver issue just like the Macbook Air issue Apple already fixed.

You may be able to get a display driver update from the laptop manufacturer.
Unfortunately, if none of the workarounds is circumventing the problem for you, and there are no display driver updates that solve the problem, you may want to escalate it to the laptop maker.  They in turn can push through a new display driver update.  They should take responsibility for making your system work with modern, professional software.

  • Photoshop CS6 is not responding when leaving PS and coming back again

A weired problem: My new installation of Photoshop CS6 (OS X Mavericks on a new MBP) is not responding when leaving PS and coming back again.
Example: i open a new file in PS - then i click on the desktop - when i go back to PS again, it is not responding to any click on any window (except for the menu bar).
I can solve the problem when i try going back several times or when i go back to PS via the icon in the dock.
But it is still very annoying in a quick workflow.
I would appreciate any idea what i can check more, cause i tried everything and i can’t find this issue on the web…
    Thanks…

Problem solved… The troublemaker was the Trackball Works Driver for Kensington trackballs / Expert Mouses…
I’m now using a generic driver for USB devices and everything is fine.

Photoshop CS6 continually shuts down on me when I go to save a file I am working on. I work primarily in this software, and this continual shut down happens at least 10+ times a day. Any ideas on how to fix this would be greatly appreciated!

Does that happen with that file only or with any other files as well?
Did you try to create a new file and save it?
What error message do you get? Please attach an error screenshot.
Which operating system do you use?
Since when are you facing this issue? Did it ever work before?

  • Photoshop CS6 question

I'm watching a lynda.com tutorial demonstrating 3D type in Photoshop CS6.  I don't see 3D among the menu options at the top of my screen as is shown in the tutorial.  What am I missing?

I am guessing that you are missing Cs6 "Extended" - you need Extended for 3d work.
    Cheers
