Photoshop CS6 Slow Performance
Hi guys,
Wonder if you can help me with this one. I've noticed recently my copy of CS6 has become very slow and laggy.
Symptoms:
Unresponsive
Repeated messages about "Out of memory"
GUI unresponsive, everything goes grey
Temp Fix:
I've messed around with the memory settings to see if that helps, but it doesn't seem to do a great deal. I've had it set to 90% and 50% and get much of the same results.
Normally when the program hangs or becomes unresponsive, I have to close it via Task Manager
System:
Windows 7 Pro
2.4Ghz Quad Core CPU 64Bit
4GB RAM
Photoshop CS6 13.1.2 x64
As I write this my CPU usage is 5% and physical RAM is 66% - surely there is more than enough to keep Photoshop ticking over?
Any thoughts on how I can sort this out would be appreciated. It is becoming very annoying that I can't use the product properly and have to keep repeatedly restarting it.
In case Chris wasn't clear enough, Photoshop doesn't act like that without something being wrong with your particular installation.
You say this happened recently... What's different from when it worked?
One additional piece of advice for something to try: Clear your preferences to defaults by pressing and holding Control - Shift - Alt immediately upon cold starting Photoshop. If you're quick enough to get the keys down - and you have to be very quick - Photoshop will prompt you to confirm the deletion of the current preferences. If it just comes up without prompting you weren't quick enough.

Photoshop CS6/CC performance with Quadro 1000M/2000M vs. Radeon HD 7970M/8970M
I am trying to find any benchmarks on how these two GPUs compare for Photoshop work. Does anybody have any pointers to information or even subjective thoughts?
I am led to believe from my research that a number of the filters in CS5 are using OpenCL. For OpenCL the Radeon 7970M is far superior to the Quadros. However, I am not able to find information on the overall performance of the Quadros vs. the Radeons for Photoshop.
The work with Photoshop will be for static images - creation of images rather than manipulation of source.
I am looking to get a Thinkpad W530, but it only comes with the Quadro GPUs. If I do get it, will I be getting a slow machine for Photoshop 2D work, assuming that the Quadro's are really targeted at 3D CAD work?I don think Photoshop will stress any GPU it supports. For Photoshop make sure Adobe tested the GPU with the version of Photoshop your using. http://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/kb/tested-video-cards-photoshop-cs5.html
http://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/kb/photoshop-cs6-gpu-faq.html
If your also going to use the machine for gaming get the fastest GPU that also works with Photoshop. I did not see Quadro 1000 listed Quadro 2000 was listed in CS6 . Radeons HD 7000 series listed in CS6 list of texted GPU.

ATI 13.1 - Photoshop laggy/slow performance
So yesterday i chosed to update from my 2 year old display driver 10.9 to 13.1 a big jump, but it seems like my photoshop has gone way down in perfomance compared to the other driver
so i tried ti disable "Graphic Processor" and it kinda solved it, but when i have the option enabled my ps feels terrible when i drag stuff around it laggs and feel slow, tried with all kind Advanced settings > Drawing
Basic - Normal - Advanced same performance with all of them, but slightly better the lower i set it
i hope anyone can give me a solution so i can keep going with my creative art adventure
I dont know if my system spec is usefull, since it run smoothly with an old driver which means my setup should be able to handle it.
- OutI suspect that something else is at play, then. I have a 7850, before that a 5670, and neither could be called "laggy and slow" with Photoshop CS6.
But it's good that you rolled back to 12.8. There are at least 3 well-known problems with 13.1, including colors blacking out, missing lighting rendering in 3D, and even failures for the monitor power-down screen saving to work properly.
I wonder whether your Photoshop preferences might have become corrupted with all the system changes. You *could* try a general preferences reset to defaults. This involves pressing and holding Control - Shift - Alt immediately after cold-starting Photoshop. You have to be quick, and if you're quick enough Photoshop will prompt you to confirm deletion of your current prefs. Of course, this means you'll need to re-make any preferences changes from default you've chosen to make over time.
What's a specific operation you're finding to be laggy? You mention dragging stuff around... What size document (pixel counts, bit depth), howw many layers, what kinds of layers, how laggy (xx seconds to drag from one side of the document to the other, etc.)?

Photoshop CS6 drawing performance and MBP Retina 15 with Nvidia GT 650M
Hi, I've noticed that to get a significantly better drawing performace in Photoshop CS6 with a MacBook Pro 15" Retina Mid 2012 Nvidia GeForce GT 650M one has to start Photshop with a screen resolution set to "Best for Retina" then once Photoshop is running, to change the resolution to "Scaled" 1650x1080 or 1920x1200. Why ?
Are you aware of that isssue?
Any settings I should look at ?
Thanks for your helpThanks. I've noticesd another detail that might help:
After doing the steps I mentionned earlier, the HUD colorpicker, the smooth zoom and the "red" brush shape that shows how hard the brush is, are no longer working/displayed.
Maybe the rescaling stops some GPU enabled features of the interface, thus leaving more "power" to the painting tools? -
since upgrading to Mountain Lion OS X, everything I click on I get the loading wheel? I haven't used photoshop since
hmm, so played around a little bit with Activity Monitor and it looks like Photoshop when it saves is duplicating the current open file in memory and then not giving the ram back upon save complete.
For example.
Test 1 (small file)
I open file A. Ram usage goes to 900mb.
I create an empty layer in file A and hit save
ram jumps to 1.8gb and stays at 1.8gb until I completely shut photoshop down
Test 2 (large file)
I open file B. Ram usage goes to 2.5gb
I create an empty layer in file B and hit save
ram jumps to 5gb (and stays)
Test 3 (smart object, save and re-open then save again)
I open file B. Ram usage goes to 2.5gb.
I merge all open layers into a new smart object. Ram goes to 5gb.
I hit save and ram goes to 5.2gb.
I close photoshop ram goes back down to 0
I open file B again usage goes to 1gb. (1 smartobject layer must be much more efficient)
I create a new empty layer and save. Ram jumps to 2gb.
(Note when I refer to ram above, I am refering to the amount of ram Activity Monitor is reporting as being used by Photoshop)
Interestingly enough if I create a second empty layer and save again the ram still goes up but only by about 200mb in both cases.
Lightroom seems to be for the most part uneffected mostly sitting at about 900mb. Right when the save completes it bumps up to 1.2gb for a few seconds then right back to 900 (presumably updating the new thumbnail). Also right when the save finishes Lightroom grabs almost my entire CPU power for a few seconds, which likely isn't a big issue, but also worth noting.
Other than Lightroom's little surge CPU stays relatively low the whole time. Photoshop mostly staying under 5%, usually closer to 1%. -
Photoshop CS6 very very slow (Windows 7)
Hi, im desperate as ive run out of options i think. Photoshop CS6 behaves slow, very slow.
Even with no document open, right after launch it reacts with delay on any mouseclick, sometimes it takes
more than 20 seconds before a menu pops open after clicking. Painting paintbrushes are impossible slow.
Basically any action is dragged.
Its impossible to work like this. With all previous versions of PS i never encountered this.
Things i tried :
- turned off gpu acceleration (i read that gpu can cause performance issues, some ppl solved slowness by turning it off)
- updated latest nvidia drivers
- reinstalled photoshop
- tried to inspect photoshop processes with ProcessHacker, even when at 5% cpu it runs extremely slow
specs :
Windows 7
Nvidia GT545
1 terrabyte free scratch disk space (on C:)
8 gb ram
CPU i7 2600Has it always run slow, or did this start recently?
What anti-virus are you using? Have you tried disabling it to see it that make a difference?
Are you working over a network? -
Photoshop CS6 - Very Slow Brush Speeds...
Hi:
I thought CS5 was bad, but brushing with CS6 all brush strokes are very, very slow. If I make a brush stoke I have literally have to put my hand on my chin and wait for the brush to catch up. I cannot work like this. Any suggestions on what to do to speed up the brushes? Forget about adding anything else to Photoshop, please work on speeding up exisiting functions.
Photoshop CS6, 13x 64Bit
Thank you, Glenn

Brand New Machine and Photoshop CS6 running very slow
I just installed Photoshop CS6 on my new Machine and it is running horrible. Moving around objects, turning effects on/off, zooming, and more all take for ever to render. I can not figure out why. I have updated video card drivers and more. Scratch Disk is set to a second disk and messed with all of the GPU settings. Only photoshop runs bad on this machine. I should not be having issues with the system. Below is the system info from Photoshop. Also this machine is running with two SSD drives which should make PS run even faster.

Tried Photoshop at all sorts of various settings including default. All with the D drive being used for the Scratch disk. Working on the similar size file described above. The file I am working on now is 4000 x 4800 pixels, CMYK, 8 bit depth. Photoshop is slow selecting layers with auto select, very slow when moving layers around the Canvas, and slow rendering the Canvas when zooming in and out. This document also has about 30 layers and is 80mg.
I only use the 64 bit version of Photoshop these days. Also all three monitors are set at 60 Hertz. Photoshop is closed and reopened upon all changes.
I use to be a Photoshop Certified Expert in CS3 so I am extremely familar with the product. I am just stumped. -
Photoshop CS6 Performance in Video-Animation mode?
I've just started playing with the Motion workspace in Photoshop CS6 with the goal of doing some HDTV slideshows of still images with "Ken Burns" zooms & pans & maybe other animation. I bought a training video from Infinite Skills that seems pretty good, but when I load their example files into CS6 and try to scrub around on the timeline, it takes forever to do anything other than scrubbing to the right (and that is slow). CS6 plays through their example videos well enough for non-rendered video, and I can scrub slowly to the right with the image keeping up fairly well, but when I try to scrub left, jump to the right, or click the icon to move the scrub button to the start of the video, it takes 5 seconds to 10 seconds for anything to happen. I'm running CS6 64 bit in Windows 7. My processor is an i7 920 @ 2.67 GHz, 8 GB ram, system drive is a Kingston SSD. Windows' Performance Information gives a score of 7.0 of a possible 7.9. A Passmark PerformanceTest 8.0 run gives me numbers typical of my Asus PS6 motherboard and i7 processor.
I know PS wasn't built from scratch for this kind of work, but is a 5-10 second lag to be expected every time I scrub on the timeline? There is a site named Black Viper. The guy there knew how to configure an XP computer for different purposes, and then set it back easily for everyday use. I believe that he has updated to incorporate Vista and Win7. But, the whole purpose of the story is - knowing what system resources you need for rendering video - and what resources you can temporarily suspend, and then easily restart. Many, many resources can be suspended in Win7, which frees up resources for the important and resource-hungry activity that is video rendering. If you can get on over to Black Viper, it is a very useful starting point, because he designates the normal state of your computer - so that you can put it back there again. However, as a general rule, if your computer does not need to be active on a network, a lot of the networking services can be suspended. AV and anti-spyware - once disconnected from the network - can also be shut off (but do this only after you have done a comprehensive AV and spywware sweep). Software updaters can be turned off. In fact, if you know your way to the Services section of Windows (I cannot say what the equivalent for a Mac may be...) using trial and error, switch out services - say three at a time - and then see what effect. Obviously, put them back in if it turns out they are vital to the video-processing. But yes, nothing beats extremely fast hard drives, and even an overclocked chip can help, with more like a gamers GPU to boot. This, as you will understand,is more a dedicated video editing setup, and CS6/CC are meant for a more casual approach. If you own a Honda Civic, so to speak, it will not drive like a Porsche!
If you have a modicum of computer savvy, go to www.blackviper.com and scroll down to your OS - make a copy of the table of modifications (or print) and then proceed to lock-down resource-hogging services. They can have a significant effect on processing speed. -
Photoshop CS6 Running Slow After GPU/RAM/CPU Upgrade?
Hi all,
I recently upgraded my Mac Pro 1,1 with the following:
CPU Upgrade to 2 x 2.66GHz Quad Core
RAM Upgrade to 14GB
GFX Upgrade to ATI Radeon HD 5770 1024mb VRAM
Everything seems fine. My temperatures are normal and things are seemingly speedy.
My problem is that Photoshop CS6 seems to run a little slow. I'm only working on web files (72dpi) that are yes, sometimes quite long in length (5000px high), but that has never been an issue.
Some problems I've noticed:
When I click to edit text, it may take 2 seconds before I can start editing it
When I scroll upwards it chugs a little
If I grab an object/shape and drag it around too quick, it might lag a little
I'm not sure how to explain it really, but for the couple hundred dollars I spent on upgrading my maching, I wouldn't expect any of these things to be an issue.
Here are my photoshop performance settings:

Something to try: Reset Photoshop's preferences to defaults.
Press and hold Command - Shift - Option immediately upon cold-starting Photoshop. If you get the keys down quickly enough - and you have to be very quick - you'll get a prompt asking you to confirm deleting your current preferences. Once you confirm that, Photoshop will start up with a default set of parameters, though you will still find you can select your named workspaces and (I believe) your Actions will all still be there.
Try immediately to see if the problem recurs. Then methodically make your preferred preferences changes, quit Photoshop, and restart, then test to see that the problem hasn't recurred.
With some luck, you'll have cleared up the sluggishness, and will have been able to make all your preferences changes you like without it recurring.
This really can work.

I just bought Photoshop CS6 and the performance is SO SLOW that it is basically unusable for any professional production work. Everything seems to hang and feel clunky overall. I'm SO disappointed. What can I do?

great Problemes after installing Yosemite (10.10.2 ) with Photoshop CS6....The program crashes --last time 10 times during my work session..wacomtable doesnt work..it is slow...and get error messages about the graphic card....It s a Terror to work with my beloved Photoshop!
The Yosemite upgrade very often damages existing Photoshop installations. Thank Apple for that.
You need to uninstall and re-install Photoshop, then apply all the Photoshop upgrades from scratch.
But first, give us details about your setup:
BOILERPLATE TEXT:
Note that this is boilerplate text.
If you give complete and detailed information about your setup and the issue at hand,
such as your platform (Mac or Win),
exact versions of your OS, of Photoshop (not just "CS6", but something like CS6v.13.0.6) and of Bridge,
your settings in Photoshop > Preference > Performance
the type of file you were working on,
machine specs, such as total installed RAM, scratch file HDs, total available HD space, video card specs, including total VRAM installed,
what troubleshooting steps you have taken so far,
what error message(s) you receive,
if having issues opening raw files also the exact camera make and model that generated them,
if you're having printing issues, indicate the exact make and model of your printer, paper size, image dimensions in pixels (so many pixels wide by so many pixels high). if going through a RIP, specify that too.
A screen shot of your settings or of the image could be very helpful too,
etc.,
someone may be able to help you (not necessarily this poster, who is not a Windows user).
Please read this FAQ for advice on how to ask your questions correctly for quicker and better answers:

I had to reinstall Photoshop CS6 after rebuilding my PC. Now Bridge takes 15 sec to respond to a mouse click. Photoshop is fine. I have installed all updates.
Any thoughts?Slow as compared to what? Have you seen better performance with older versions of Photoshop?
>after app launched, it takes nearly 5 seconds to be able to browse through menus
Takes my system longer than that to start Photoshop CS5, and while my computer isn't a top-of-the-line workstation today (it was a few years ago), it's no slouch. Photoshop has never been a fast application to start up.

Photoshop CS6 pentool reaction rate was slower than the first use of Photoshop CS6 pentool. I wonder the fundamental cause and solution rather than optimization.
I have no problem with CS6 Pen tool performance. Its instantaneous. I'm using Windows 7 Pro and CS6 version 13.1.2. on a Dell workstation PC.
Supply pertinent information for quicker answers
The more information you supply about your situation, the better equipped other community members will be to answer. Consider including the following in your question:
Adobe product and version number
Operating system and version number
The full text of any error message(s)
What you were doing when the problem occurred
Screenshots of the problem
Computer hardware, such as CPU; GPU; amount of RAM; etc. -
Adobe Photoshop CS6 Very Slow On Rendering Type
I have a notebook with specification as mentioned below :
Lenovo Ideapad Y470P
2nd generation Intel Core i7-2670QM Processor( 2.2GHz 1333MHz 6MB)
Windows 7 Ultimate x64
AMD Radeon HD 7690 2GB
8.0GB PC3-10600 DDR3 SDRAM 1333 MHz
750GB 5400
I'm using Adobe Photoshop CS6 (64 Bit) for doing my job.
Right now, i have a task to create a banner with dimension 800 x 900 Centimeters with Resolution 300 DPI and Color Mode RGB 16 Bit.
The file size when blank is about 56.1 GB.
The problem is, when i add some text with Horizontal Type Tool and click on the Move Tool, the Rendering Type screen show up and take a very very long time to finished.
I have made some configurations to my Photoshop that i found on Adobe Forum, but the problem still persisted.
Some configurations that i've made is :
- Turn off the Automatically Save Recovery Information
- Set Maximize PSD and PSB File Compatibility to Ask
- Set the Memory Usage to 95%
- Set the Cache Levels to 8 and Cache Tile Size to 1024K
- Set the Graphics Advanced Settings to Drawing Mode Advanced, and Check the option Use Graphics Processor To Accelerate Computation, and Uncheck the option Anti-Alias and 30 Bit Display
- Set the Scratch Disk to another partition ( C:System D:PageFile E:Data F:Scratch Disk)
And after all of that configuration, my Photoshop still slow when Rendering Type.
Could you give me some tips to solve my problem?
Thanks300 ppi for a banner that size is categorically not normal. Guaranteed.
Get specific instructions from the shop that is going to print it.
You keep confusing ppi with dpi. The resolution of an image file really is expressed in ppi, pixels per inch, not "dpi" which is dots per inch. The precise terminology is as follows:
DPI = Dots per inch = units used to measure the resolution of a printer
LPI = Lines per inch = The offset printing 'lines' or dots per inch in a halftone or line screen.
PPI = Pixels per inch = the number of pixels per inch in screen/scanner file terms.
Here's a link to a discussion that may interest you:
http://graphicdesign.stackexchange.com/questions/487/what-ppi-should-a-large-format-artwor k-for-print-be-done-at
It includes the following chart and subsequent comments :
"The rule of thumb is that we need 1.5 to 2 times the LPI in PPI to get acceptable results.
"Viewing Distance Present Study
20 feet greater than 10 LPI
18 feet 18.75 LPI or greater
16 feet 18.75 LPI or greater
14 feet 37.5 LPI or greater
12 feet 37.5 LPI or greater
10 feet 50 LPI or greater
8 feet 65 LPI or greater
6 feet 85 LPI or greater
4 feet 100 LPI or greater
2 feet 133 LPI or greater
1 foot 150 LPI or greater
6 inches 150 LPI or greater
"Presumably, for a banner 3m x 5m, you'd be standing at a minimum of, say, 10 feet. (Just eyeballing the wall here.) So, by this table, you'll need 50 LPI minimum. That would mean your raster graphics should be about 100 PPI, or 75 PPI at 12-14 feet. Considering that and the fact that 2x LPI is pretty conservative for reproducing fidelity (often 1.5xLPI is "enough"), this agrees with [the given] advice of 75 PPI being acceptable."
Talk to your printer. I suspect they will want a file at under 75 ppi, or even much less. Follow the printer's advice/request.
