Photoshop effects vs. FW's own dropdown shadow, etc.

I was wondering what the difference is between Fw's drop down shadow and the Photoshop effects that come with cs3.
I realize this is rather a lame question, but that's how things have been as of late...

Hi Paevo
The photoshop effect has got the spread option which makes the shadow wider with less blur and the size option and also gives you the ability to add noise to the shadow.
They both have some common characteristics but this seems to have been an easy way to add some more filters in FWs.

  • Photoshop effects

Hey everyone, i decided to post a photoshop topic here altough it may not be the right forum, so i apologize. anyway, i made a movie with a couple of friends and want to add a photoshop effect so i saved it all as an image sequence, obviously its alot to click on ever one and apply effect then save the close widnow for a couple million frames, anyway, i was wondering if there was some sort of automator that will make it apply to all the photos, or just in photoshop to apply the effect to all open windows, any help is appreciated thanks alot!

thanks for all that guys, but yet again i seemed to answer my own question... i would have added plug-ins and such however, the hole thing is to do a movie for a school project and be as creative as possible without spending money and using the resources available to us. i appreciate all of that... turns out that if u use the actions panel on the side, that you can record actions for photoshop to perform and you can continuosly loop it, for example i recorded my poster edge effect the save commmand, then close window, and it keeps doing that all i need to do is tape down enter for when it asks to replace the file, real easy, i finished about 400 frames by just leaving the computer with the enter button taped, best thing was that it stops once it runs out of files.f..
    again thanks for the help...

  • Will the Intel Iris Pro Graphics 5200 run all Photoshop effects?

I am lost and cant find a final answer to the following.
I am about to buy a MacBook Pro and cant decide between the one with dedicated GPU and the one without. I want to go for the one without - the increased battery performance and lack of overheating are favourable.
BUT... I cant get a deffinate answer to whether the Intel® Iris™ Pro Graphics 5200 on the 4th gen i7 processors (ie the one without the dedicated GPU) will run all these Photoshop effects:
Adaptive Wide Angle Filter (compatible video card required)
Liquify (accelerated with compatible video card with 512 MB of VRAM)
Oil Paint (compatible video card required)
Warp and Puppet Warp (accelerated with compatible video card)
Field Blur, Iris Blur, and Tilt/Shift (accelerated with compatible video card supporting OpenCL)
Lighting Effects Gallery (compatible video card required with 512 MB of VRAM)
New 3D enhancements (3D features in Photoshop require a compatible video card with 512 MB of VRAM):
    Draggable Shadows
    Ground plane reflections
    Roughness
    On-canvas user interface controls
    Ground plane
Light widgets on edge of canvas
    IBL (image-based light) controller
I don't need them to run massively fast, I just need to know if they will work without a dedicated GPU. I appreciate the Intel® Iris™ Pro Graphics 5200 supports open gl/cl but I cant find an idiots proof answer if that means all these features will work.
    HELP!
    Cheers

We’re not aware of any issues using that specific card with Photoshop and all features should be supported.

Since Adobe and AMD have a relationship, you can expect the higher end Adobe effects to support discrete Nvidia cards, and probably not put much energy into GPU support for Intel HD 5000 graphics. Yes, PS will run on HD 5000 chips, but you may find that some higher demand features get automatically disabled by the Photoshop GPU "sniffer", and others that do work, may suffer poorer performance, or full feature support.
Suggest you post your question in the Adobe Photoshop community too.

  • How to use .ai brushes in Photoshop cs6? (Don't own Illustrator)

I just purchased Kyle T Webster's "Ultimate Megapack for Photoshop CS5 and up". But once I bought it and downloaded it, I realized the files were not .abr but rather .ai. Is there any way to convert or import them into photoshop? I do not own Illustrator and have tried google searching solutions, but with no success. Please help, I'm dead in the water here. Thanks

If they're .ai brushes and not .abr I'm afraid he must be =( perhaps he was thinking Photoshop but meant to write Illustrator. Definitely worth trying to let him know, see if you can't get your money back.

  • I applied a Photoshop effect to some outlined text - but the outlines still look the same?

    1. I typed out the word
    2. I created an outline of the word
    3. I went to Effect>Photoshop Effects>Texture>Stained Glass and applied
However, if you look closely, the blue outlines ignore the  the divots and holes created from the effet.
Is this effect just an overlay? I ask this because this design is for a t-shirt and I want it to look the same as it appears on my screen.
This may sound like a weird question but I'm just getting into Illustrator.
    Thanks

Photoshop Effects produce raster images. You will have to use someting like a Grunge effect using actual vector objects for it to be useful for screening onto a tee-shirt.

  • Photo/Photoshop Effect Ideas

I'm doing a project for a photo for a photo class I am, but this time my teacher has said that we can do whatever we want. I want t do something creative. I am limited when it comes to taking pictures. I live in a place where there are basically a few malls and stores. No good landscapes nearby. There is, however a creak behind my house, but it's definitely not one worth taking a photo of. Anyways, back to what I was saying, I'm looking for a nice photoshop effect or something that I can do to a picture that's not just retouching (for instance, one of my friends has turned one of the portraits she's taken into picture that looks like it was painted over in watercolor). Any ideas would be helpful! I can provide more information if needed!
P.S. I'm sincerly sorry if this is the wrong place to put this, I've only been on here a few times, but you all seem to have such great ideas for people.

So? Take a picture of a cityscape, and give it a 'Techno' feel. Maybe make it an ad poster for an imaginary band/concert. Google 'PhotoShop tutorials' for sites with a whole host of methods and ideas.
    Good luck.

  • Can I get a discount on Adobe Photoshop for mac if I own cs6 for windows?

Can I get a discount on Adobe Photoshop for mac if I own cs6 for windows?

It might be possible, though you will have to check with Adobe directly.  Normally, an upgrade involves going from a product to a product or from a suite to a suite, but not a product to a suite or vice versa.  And I don't know that this would be an upgrade since you are moving laterally rather than up.  I have heard of exceptions being made, so your best bet is to contact someone who has the ability to work out a deal with you.
I am pretty sure that if you had a Creative Cloud subscription the question of Mac versus PC is moot as you can have installations for both machines with the subscription.  But Creative Suites are different animals.

  • Drop Shadow etc in Illustrator cc

My version of Illustrator CC doesn't have any options for drop shadows etc. under stylise - is there something else I should download?

    Sally,
There are two Stylize groups under Effect. Have you looked into both?
If it is in neither, you probably have a preference corruption, in which case you may try one or more of these:
    1) Close down Illy and open again;
    2) Restart the computer (you may do that up to 3 times);
    3) Close down Illy and press Ctrl+Alt+Shift/Cmd+Option+Shift during startup (easy but irreversible);
    4) Move the folder http://www.bugge.com/Family-and-friends/Illy/illy.html (follow the link with that name) with Illy closed (more tedious but also more thorough and reversible).

Windows will scale applications display or windows will not scale application display depending on how the application is coded.  Photoshop is coded in a way that its display is not scaled by windows.  Photoshop knows about your displays high pixel count not its resolution  so it uses its pixels  however it does not scale its UI to make it usable on your display.  Other application let Windows  scale their display output.   For example Microsoft default for is Surface Pro 3, 216 ppi display is to scale applications display up 150% so the surface pro 3 display which has 2160x1440 pixels a 216 ppi resolution look like at display with the user is using with 1440x960 pixels.  The Application works like the display is 1440x960 and Windows scale those pixels to the displays using the displays  2160x1440 pixels the effectively changing it resolution to 144ppi rather than the actual 216ppi.
The reg update  and external manifest file  effectively tells photoshop its working on such a size display display some number of pixel wide and some number photoshop uses that as the display size  in turn Windows scale those pixels to use the displays 2160x1440 pixels efector lowing its 216ppi resolution.  Photoshop CC 2014 2X UI would be like using windows 200% option applications would be shown the are working on a display 1080x720 instead of the Surface Pro 3 2160x1440. Note that 1080x720 does not meet PS requirement of 1024x768.  Photoshop UI would not fit on the Surface Pro 3 display..
Since you have a 4k display if you have CC 2014 you can use its 2x UI effectively Photoshop will be running on a 1920x1080 display and have half the resolution of you 4K display  3840x2160 pixels four native pixels are use as a single pixel.   1920x1080 pixels exceed PS requirement.

  • Does Photoshop have extras, plug-ins, 3rd party programs, etc to purchase?

Does Photoshop have extras, plug-ins, 3rd party programs, etc to purchase like music and video editing software can?
If so, where is the price chart? I need to know these things as I am concidering purchasing Photoshop.
    Thank you.

I did look at the plug-in page quickly. I noticed the free ones and the pay ones.
From using producing programs, some photo editing and some video editing programs: I'd rather use what is there and what is inside first. Then look at the extras. I am realizing how deep this can get. But if I bought PS or CS 5 or whatever: I would want to learn.
I know that some plug-ins, extras, etc are their own and are highly useful. I do understand that it can take longer but in some programs you can do what a plug-in can do though it may require more steps. I'd rather learn the program and then get the short-cuts. But again some are stand alone and highly uselful - these are what I am looking for and want to know about.
I didn't know there were so many books though, this is new information. I believe that I was told a while ago about a couple or that one comes out with a new release. I like to read and know the who, what, when, where, why and how: but most of my time should be in the program. Eg: I read my photo editing programs manuals. That was important and helped me. I need to know terms, language, some short-cuts/how-to, etc. But getting in there is way more important.
Any more information is great. Please keep it comming. I am not getting the program in the immediate future, it's the pricing issue right now and that it's way more important for me to use what I have as I am still learning big time. Plus I have to get on my camera a lot more and draw a bit more.
    Thank you.

  • Problem of ragged shadows etc in 3D images/meshes created from greyscale

I am having a problem creating smooth 3D images.
I have been taking a 16-bit greyscale image with a various domes and other shapes with systematic gradations of greyness 'impressed' onto it. From this, I use the "create 3D mesh from greyscale" to create a surface whose depth is based on the values in the 16-bit greyscale image: this greyscale image becomes the "Background Depth" layer in the 3D image. I then add a Background layer (that exactly matches the greyscale image) to the 3D image, which will determine how the 3D shape will be coloured.
I then force ray tracing using the "Quality: " "Ray Trace Draft" or "Ray Trace Final" and the result is a 3D surface with some shadows. Okay so far, BUT the surface is a bit pitted, a bit ragged, not smooth, the shadows have jagged bit in - it's just not very good, in fact, it's unusably poor.  Even if I apply some filtering to the greyscale image to smooth out any nasty discontinuities there may be in it, the final 3D surface is still pitted, with jagged shadows etc.
If I look at a wireframe version of a 3D image, it is clear that the resolution of the starting image is better than that of the wireframe image: there are several points in the original image to each point on the wireframe image (that is to say, each vertex in the triangles that make up the wire frame image is several points away from each other vertex).
When I look at the sample images in tutorials etc they look incredibly smooth and appealing. Why cannot I produce the same quality of image?  Are there some settings in the Edit->Preferences->3D panel that I need to reset?  Some way of increasing the number of triangles in the wireframe model?
I have posted a sample of the grayscale image, and a sample of the 3D image that this greyscale image produces when converted into a mesh. (I've saved them as JPG files, which forces the 16-bit greyscale into 8-bit mode. But the original conversion to a mesh was performed using a 16-bit greyscale image).
I hope I have described my problem clearly enough.  Can anyone help me?
I am using windows 7 on an HP Pavilion Laptop, using OpenGL to draw the graphics.
    Many thanks in anticipation.
    Marc

The main reason for the jagged edges and shadows in your posted rendering was the relatively low number of polygons in the regular array mesh generated from the heightmap image containing sharp edges. To make matters worse, the edges were jaggier than the pixel grid in many places.
To get non-jagged edges and shadows in your rendering of a heightmap with sharp edges, each polygon of the mesh will need to be smaller than a pixel of the rendered image. Photoshop creates a mesh containing far fewer polygons than the count of pixels in a heightmap. Therefore the resolution of the heightmap image will need to be higher than the resolution of the rendered image unless the mesh is sufficiently distant from the camera to result in it filling only a small region of the rendered image.
Here is a simplistic example where it was necessary to use a heightmap image with 8 times the horizontal and vertical resolution of the rendered image.
First, the result when using the black and white heightmap with the same resolution as the rendered image.
Next is a rendering, at the same resolution as before, but the heightmap and mesh were created in a document with 4 times the vertical and horizontal resolution of the initial attempt. Still slightly jaggy.
Finally, the same rendering resolution again, but the heightmap and mesh were created in a document with 8 times the vertical and horizontal resolution of the initial attempt. This time the mesh has sufficient density to be rendered with no jaggies.
