Photoshop Elements 4.0 - Cropping a layer

Is there a way to crop a duplicate layer without having the original background layer cropped also? I make the duplicate layer to save the original but when I crop the duplicate, the background (original photo) is cropped also.
Thanks.

Jim....
On the duplicate layer make a Selection with the Marquee Tool (M)- Rectangular/Oval or whatever. Then invert the Selection - Select > Inverse (Ctrl+Shft+I). Then press the Delete key.

  • Photoshop Elements select tool, when targeting layer or multiple layers the layer properties box pops up.  Having to very carefully and repeatedly select and highlight layers to move, or merge when using Move Tool.  Win 8, Adobe 12, Intuos 4 w/ updated dr

This issue has been going on for several weeks.
The Move Tool is not functioning properly when selecting and TARGETING a layer or multiple layers, as the Layer Properties box pops up requiring me to close it and try again.
How to reset or is there an update and fix for this issue.
Using Win 8, Elements 12, and Intuos 4 Pen and Tablet.

To reset the tool I suggest click on it once and then look for something like this in the bottom half of your window:
In the above picture I have marked one section in red box.  You need to click on it to get the option to either reset the only tool you have clicked or to reset all the tools in the editor window.  Of course you have to be in Expert Mode to get this to work.
    Good luck.

  • Photoshop Elements 9 Layers not functioing (Layer Mask and Adjustment layer)

Does ayone know of a problem with PS Elements 9 layers and Windows 7?

What happens when you try to use layers?

  • Use photoshop elements 8 to crop photo

why cant I use all the features on my photoshop

Well, I don't understand those directions at all, unless you're trying to something quite different than just cropping. If you just want to crop an image, you go to Image>Resize>Image Size, and first make sure the setting in pixels per inch is what you want (usually 300 ppi is considered optimum for printing, around 72 for onscreen display). If it's not what you want, turn OFF resample image in the bottom part of the window and change the number to what you want, click OK, then go to the crop tool and drag out a one inch square or enter the dimensions in the options bar before drag, move the crop frame where you want it, and click OK.
To move something from one image to another, which sounds like what your directions are for, not cropping, you must first select it with the selection tool of your choice to tell PSE what you want to copy, then use the regular copy/paste commands for your operating system (ctrl+c/cmd+c, ctrl+v/cmd+v, etc.). To select an entire image, press ctrl+a/cmd+a.
If you just want to copy part of an image rather than cropping it, use the marquee tool to select your one inch square, then copy/paste into the other document.

  • Will Photoshop Elements 8 auto-crop multiple pictures on a scanner???

I have over 90 years worth of pictures I have to scan. 1 at a time is... well... on option I don't want to use. I am new to PS. Will the program allow me to put multiple pics on my flatbed scanner, have them automaticly split up, then put in a folder??? Thank you for any help you have to offer...

It works best when PSE can easily see the edges of each photo, so it often helps to place them slightly crooked on the scanner bed. Just be sure that PSE can draw a straight line between any two photos.

  • Photoshop cc layer appears to be locked when opened in photoshop elements. pencil with line crossing it out in layers panel... help please.

I sent a psd created in photoshop cc to a customer to edit. They only have photoshop elements and cant edit the layer.. the image shows a pencil with line across.
    any ideas please???

You sent them a layer group and photoshop elements can't open or work with layer groups without some kind of add on like actions or scripts.
You should send them the document with the layers not in a layer group.

  • Edit images in Adobe Photoshop Elements

I am helping a student who is running iPhoto on Maverick.  He wants to edit his images in Photoshop Elements.  We set his preferences to do this but when he selects an image and clicks on Edit, all he gets is the welcome page of Photoshop Elements.  The image doesn't open in Elements.  What could we be doing wrong?
    Mary Lou

Previous versions would install a folder with the file you want, Adobe Photoshop Elements Editor.app, buried one layer down in another folder named Support Files.  That's the one you want to select from iPhoto.
I don't know if the layout of the installed files is the same with the newest version. However, the following may be of help:
Using Photoshop or Photoshop Elements as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
1 - select Photoshop or Photoshop Elememts as your editor of choice in iPhoto's General Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.
2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop.  When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.
3 - however, if you get the navigation window
that indicates that  PS wants to save it as a PS formatted file.  You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.
This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
With Photoshop Elements  the Saving File preferences should be configured as shown:
I also suggest the Maximize PSD File Compatabilty be set to Always.  In PSE’s General preference pane set the Color Picker to Apple as shown:
    Screenshots are from PSE 10
Note 1:  to switch between iPhoto and PS or PSE as the editor of choice Control (right)-click on the thumbnail and select either Edit in iPhoto or Edit in External Editor from the contextual menu. If you use iPhoto to edit more than PSE re-select iPhoto in the iPhoto General preference pane. Then iPhoto will be the default editor and you can use the contextual menu to select PSE for your editor when desired.
Note 2:  editing a RAW file with either PSE or PS creates a new file which must be saved outside of iPhoto, i.e. the Desktop, and imported as a new photo into the iPhoto Library.

  • Cropping layer in Photoshop Elements

    Hey~
I have just started using Photoshop Elements.I have three different pictures i their each individual layerss. I would like to crop one and when i use the crop tool it crops all the layers together. I have done my research and i tried using the Marquee Rectangular tool to select what I want. But, after I Inverse, I cant do Edit Clear( as suggested else where) becasue it "won't work". I also cannot do cntrl J to select that in a new layer. It just wont let me.
If this doesn't make sense, feel free to ask questions.
I appriciate any kind of help:-)
    Thank you!

Here's a couple of non-destructive methods to crop a layer.
With the layer selected, make your selection with the marquee. Right-click the selection and select Layer via Copy. Hide the original layer.
With the layer selected, make your selection with the marquee, click Add Layer Mask. I like this one as (if you unlink the mask) you can then reposition the mask in the layer image.

  • New Problem with cropping in Photoshop Elements 8.0

I use adobe photoshop elements 8 for years already and it has worked perfectly up until now. When I crop a picture instead of it cropping when I click on the check mark (as in the past) it reduces it to a small window with just gray in it....no reduced picture at all. Did a setting get thrown off or something? Help is appreciated!

At the far left end of the options bar is a tiny triangle. Click it and choose Reset Tool from the popout menu.

  • Photoshop elements 10 animated gifs show one layer only

I don't like this new version of photoshop elements (photoshop elements 10). When I try to edit an animated gif file, it says I can only view one layer and the rest will be lost. Why is this?

Known issue. This is actually because Photoshop CSx used a GIF plug-in that didn't support opening GIF files as layers. That same plug-in was sent over to PSE in version 9. You can get the plug-in from earlier versions to fix this:
Can't open animated GIF files as layers | Photoshop Elements 9 | Windows

  • Photoshop Elements 6: Hue/Saturation as a basic layer?

When creating a hue/saturation layer in Photoshop Elements 6, is it possible to have it act as a basic layer, adding and removing from the selection, rather than a mask layer?

The simple method is to place your selection on a separate layer and clip the hue/saturation mask to it.
In this example I selected the sky and pushed up the saturation to really exaggerate the blue color.
    1. Make your selection
    2. Press Ctrl+J to place it on its own layer
    3. Add new adjustment layer (hue/saturation) and click OK to close the dialog
    4. Hover your mouse over the dividing line between the adjustment layer and selection layer whilst holding down the alt key. Click when you see two small connecting circle appear. A downward pointing arrow will appear to show the adjustment layer is clipped to the selection layer.
    5. Double click the thumbnail icon on the adjustment layer (not the white mask thumbnail) and that will bring back the dialog box.
    6. Now use the sliders to make your selective adjustments.

  • Problem with Photoshop Elements 11 - I am trying to create a fill layer

I am trying to create a fill layer.  I am really missing something but I don't know what it is.  I bring up a photo, go into Expert. i click layer at the top then click new fill layer and solid colour. It all works but then that is all that I can see and I cannot make it a background and put the picture in it.

Elements has its own  forum Photoshop Elements
Element most likely has more the one way to do that.   Photoshop does.  In Elements advance mode in the layer palette the is an Icon the can be use to add different types of layers and the layer menu also has items to add  different type of layers.

  • PhotoShop Elements 9 Crop Tool is a total failure!

I do a fair amount of work that involves a lot of croping, mainly for animation sequencing. The Crop tool Custom Height and Width settings do NOT WORK.
I usually have a test image of the exact size that I work in. Example: 500 x100 pixels. This converts to 13.23cm x 2.65 cm at 96dpi. When I type these Crop Size requirements into the Crop tool settings box, I get a crop size way outside the size of the image that I want to crop. There is no way to set that size up yourself by using a test image as a template. In fact there is no way to set up custom sizes in the menu at all! I find this to be very upsetting as I have only just purchased this product. This limitation is something that I would expext to find in freeware, but not in a program like PhotoShop Elements 9. I have tried every conceivable way to try to get the Crop Tool to work to a Pre Set size with no success.
Why is it that a graphics program will not allow you to put in a pixel x pixel measurement? That is pure stupidity on the part of the programmers and very poor work on the part of the testing team. No wonder the program itself crashes from time to time. It just stops running - ppffft! I have a state of the art 64 bit system running Win 7 with plenty of RAM and a High end Graphics Card, so I know that my system is not at fault - it's PhotoShop 9. I cannot believe the primative workspace and the lack of the ability to custom predefine tools. All in all I'm extremely unhappy with PE9.
If anyone has had this or similar issues and has found a solution please tell me what it is.

In answer to your remark I will go through the whole process again at a later date and re-post. It does not make any difference to the resultant Crop size whether you input cm or pixels. Here's a point for you though since you mentioned it. Check out the Ruler - does it look like the Crop is anywhere near 500cm x 100cm? Maybe you were so busy trying to find fault that you failed to see the forest for the trees?
I only find fault where it exists - not where it doesn't. As far as Forums go, I am a member of a few Forums and have not had this sort of problem with answers before where the reply posts tend toward trying to pretend a problem doesn't exist or trying to prove fault with the poster. Hmmm.  Again I wonder how many of these reply's are from people with some affiliation with Adobe?
I will finish by saying that just for you I will go through the whole pointless exercise again and make sure that the Pixels are indeed input.
    1. Opening File
    2. File Open.
    3. Resetting Crop Tool.
    4. Crop Tool reset and Measurement Boxes clear.
5.First Measurement Input. PLEASE NOTE 500 Pixels Input!
    6. Second Measurement Input. PLEASE NOTE 100 Pixels Input!
    7. Third Criteria Input. PLEASE NOTE 96dpi Input!
    8. All Input Data correct and ready to Crop to preset Width/Height/Dpi restrictions.
    9. OH DEAR IT DOESN'T WORK! Again it fails to give me a simple 500x100 pixel at 96dpi Crop Box!
After this reply post you may just get some idea of the frustration I am experiencing. As you can plainly see the Crop Box drawn goes to the very edges of the Image to be Cropped. Can you see the problem now? Maybe I should just go with my friend's suggestions and take a video of the process and post it on YouTube? Then go to my local Consumer Affairs Department! If you can find what I am supposedly doing wrong - please elucidate as I have followed both the prescribed steps in the somewhat Shoddy Online Help and also the suggested remedies posted on the Forum. All to no avail. It just Won't Work!
