Photoshop Elements 5.0 organizer hangs

I have been using Elements 5.02 for a quite a while, especially the Organizer. However, a couple weeks ago it hangs whenever I try to open the organizer.
I've tried many things but no luck in extracting the catalog information. Things I've tried:
- Uninstalled and reinstalled. Downloaded and installed 5.02 update. Still hangs when opening Organizer.
- When opening, pressed the CTRL key, instructed it to compact and recover. It says it completed succesfully but it still hangs.
- When opening, pressed the CTRL key and basically created a new catalog file. Organizer successfully opened. Attempted to restore
my previous backup. It was a full backup. All the pictures were restored but when Organizer opens, it hangs again.
So my questions are:
- On the drive where my photos are restored, I see the My Catalog.psa file (23,298 KB), along with a My Catalog.ldb file. In the C:
\ProgramData\Adobe\Catalogs there is also a My Catalog.psa file but only 752 KB. Seems like my data is there but for some reason it
is not being restored properly. Can you provide any suggestions to have the Organizer extract the data from the backed-up catalog
- Are there any tests to figure out if my backed-up catalog is corrupted? Should I attach my catalog for you to examine its health?
-When restoring a backup, is it possible to only do the catalog and not all the photos?
Thanks,
Stephen

johnny,
I noticed that you posted both here and in the Premiere Elements forum. Since you said that you could play the first DVD that you created on your TV DVD player, that means that you would have created that first DVD from Premiere Elements or some other DVD auhtoring software. This is because Photoshop Elements does not create a DVD for play on a TV.
So I recommend that you go up one level from this thread, so that you are at the level of the "Photoshop Elements Technical Issues" forum and use the "Add Topic" function to start your own thread
Then in your new thread,
1) please post a description of which options you chose when you did the
b Output
command from the photoshop Elements Slide Show Editor
Did you choose
-- Send to Premiere Elements?
-- Burn to a DVD ?
-- create a File that is a .wmv file type?
2) Use Windows Explorer to examine each of these DVDs. What are the folders contained on the DVD that will play on the TV? And what are the folders on the DVD that will not play on the TV?
3) What brand of DVDs did you use? And are they +R or -R?

I was referred here by customer service.  I have downloaded Photoshop elements 5.0 to a new PC.  After accepting the agreement I receive an error message saying  "Your Adobe Photoshop Elements user name, organization, or serial number is missing or invalid. The application cannot continue and must now exit."  There is no place to enter the serial number.

All your pictures will remain safe even after uninstalling the program. Your pictures are saved to your system in form of catalog present at C:\ProgramData\Adobe\Photoshop Elements\Catalogs\<your catalog><br />When you reinstall the program you can open this catalog and view all your photos again.

  • Photoshop elements 7.0 (organizer) has stopped working, how do I fix this?

photoshop elements 7.0 (organizer) has stopped working, How do I fix this?

Start PSE to get to the Welcome screen.
Hold down the Ctrl, Alt, and Shift keys and click Organize. Keep holding down the keys until you see the Catalog window.
Select your catalog and click Repair.  Select “repair anyway” even if PSE doesn’t find problems.
Then for good measure, click Optimize.
If repairing resolves your issue then fine else repeat the above steps, but click New to create a new catalog.  If you’re able to import photos into the new catalog and the Organizer works fine, then problem can be old catalog.
In that case you can try regenerating the thumbnails.  Do Show All, Edit > Select All, and then Edit > Update Thumbnail.

  • Photoshop Elements 8  The organizer refuses to load.

All I get is an error message stating "Adobe has detected that the appilcation Elements Organizer has unexpectedly quit."
I first encountered this error after trying to creat an album using Shutterfly.  Shutterfly seemed to "hang up" when calling in the photos.
I contacted them and the suggested that I needed a new version of Adobe Flash.  After I uploaded that new Flash, the organizer quite working.
I tried to uninstall and reinstall  Photoshop Elements 8 but that did not solve the problem.  I contacted Adobe but they indicated that Photoshop Elements
had been update to version 9 and that I would have to Contract them to help with my problem.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to "fix" Photoshop Elements 8?

Thanks for your response.  Let me know if you find a solution.

  • Adobe Photoshop Elements 7.0 (Organizer) has encountered a problem and needs to close.  We are sorry

I have uninstalled and reinstalled and tried repairing, reorganizing the catalog but nothing seems to work.

You haven't said how are you starting the PSE?  There are many ways, of course, but the two main methods are:
    1) clicking on the desktop icon
    2) Start/Windows Logo >> All Programs > Adobe Photoshop Elements
Now I suggest use the second method and then go into Edit first.  Once you are in Edit, click on the Organizer icon on the top right corner.
This should start the organizer. Hopefully this would fix it forever when you exit from the PSE because the settings are normally saved on exit.

  • How can I fix Photoshop Elements 5.0 Organizer as it stopped loading new photos?

I have used Photoshop Elements 5.0 for several years.  It has stopped receiving the new downloaded photos.  How do I fix this?  (I tried running the "setup" again but I get a message that it is already loaded.)

Thank you for your reply.  Yes I was attempting to import images from the card reader.  Indeed, they did import.  However, the organizer failed to load; also I did not get the question to confirm that I did want the photos to be erased from the card.
I experimented and this operation failed once more, in the same manner.
However, all is curently working as it should.  I don't have any idea for the failure nor for the current correct operation of photoshop.  Again though, thank you for your input.

  • Photoshop Elements 5.0 Organizer suddenly does not open

I've been using Photoshop Elements 5.0 for over a decade without any problems.  Suddenly, the Organizer will not open.  I can open the Editor but not the Organizer.  What the ---- ????

Thanks for replying with a potential solution.  When the Welcome Screen comes up, I tried holding down the shift key as I hit the Organizer icon.  That doesn't seem to do anything.  The program starts to load - I see the status comments showing the various steps.  But then nothing happens - nothing opens.  Do you know any other way that I can get to the catalog manager??
Also - if I reinstall the software or upgrade to the latest version of Elements (in order to fix this problem) will I be able to retain all the tags that I've attached to my photos?  I have thousands of pictures categorized and tagged and it would take me years to try to find and retag all of the pictures.
Any insight you can provide is much appreciated.

  • Photoshop Elements 7.0   Organizer freezes upon opening

I am so very frustrated.  I have been using this program for onver a year.  I recently started experiencing this problem.  When I import photos fro a folder, the organizer shows "generating thumbnails" then freezes.  I cannot use the organizer at all.  I have to use my task manager to shut down the program.  I thought I;d solved the problem as I uninstalled the programand then reinstalled it.  It worked ok for a week or so, but then I had to import mor photos to work with and once again I am back to zero.  I am using Windows XP and have 1.0 GB of ram...and 1.81ghz...my laptop has less GHz and works fine with PSE so I dont get it?  This is the same syatem I've been using all; along and now I have an issue.  Can anyone PLEASE help??

Try deleting the thumbnail cache, which may be corrupt, as described in step 5 of this FAQ:

  • Can't access Photoshop Elements 12 from Organizer

I am using Adobe Premiere Elements 13 for video and using the organizer that came with it.  I also edit photos in the organizer with my Photoshop Elements 12.  However, when I click on edit from the organizer it wants me to buy Photoshop Elements 13 or try it for 30 days.  How can I use my Photoshop Elements 12 for photo editing from the organizer?

    Hi,
Each version of Photoshop Elements and Premiere Elements are designed to work independently from other versions. That is why Adobe sell the package with both applications at a reduced cost.
You could set up your version 13 organizer to use Photoshop Elements 12 editor as a supplementary editor - see Edit -> Preferences -> Editing. Then, when you are in the Elements 13 organizer and want to edit a photo, you would select Editor -> External Editor.
However, there are a few problems that you need to be aware of. The Photoshop Elements 12 editor will only talk to a Elements 12 organizer so you may have to uncheck the "Include in Elements organizer" option when saving in the editor. The new image will not, by default, appear in your Elements 13 organizer - you may be able to use watch folders. The new image will not appear in a version stack - you could manually stack it.

  • Photoshop Elements, XP and DirectX hang up

Installed Photoshop elements 9.0 on the school machines. Windowws SP
    The installation went fine.
After the restart tried to open the Organizer and got the messasge the Direct X plug in was installed but we needed to restart.
    After this restart
We get the same message every time, and this has happend on all the machines.
    any suggestions?

Most likely you've got a corrupted or missing system DLL used by the DirectX subsystem.  System files are notoriously hard to replace, so use the built-in System File Checker utility to repair them:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310747
Run sfc using the /scannow option.  It can take a while, so be patient.  When sfc finishes, even though it might report that it didn't find any files to repair, it really did, so reboot the computer.

  • Can PhotoShop Elements 11 save Organizer Albums in a format PE Version 8 can open/use?

I haven't found much info on how the Organizer function in PhotoShop Elements has changed from version 8 to version 11.  I've started scanning some photos into PSE8's Organizer, and it works well, but I'm considering moving up to version 11 before doing the bulk of the project.  However, I'd like my sister to be able to use my old copy of version 8 to be able to deal with the albums I'm creating with Organizer, so I need to know whether version 11 can save its Organizer files/albums in a way that is backward-compatible with version 8.
    Anybody know?

Thanks for the response.  I suspect that you're right about the lack of backward compatibility - I didn't see anyting in the save/backup process that looked like it was giving any option to go backwards, and I would assume that trying to open a catalog with version 8 that was created/backed up by version 11 would not end well.
I suspect that the thumbnail creation issue was probably caused by the same setting that caused version 11 to copy all of my media files to a new location during the conversion process.  I was trying to make sure version 11 didn't change or write anything to any locations where version 8 was located, and something I did or checked during the conversion process probably caused version 11 to basically start over fresh and have to create all new thumbnails.  It wasn't that bad, and only happened that one time at the beginning - once it was done all the subsequent times I've opened version 11 have had the thumbnails there without delays.
The biggest time-negative thing I've found so far with 11 has been the time it takes to bring up a clear picture when double-clicking on a thumbnail - I get a full size image pretty quick, but it's blurry - then a few seconds later it finally gets focussed/sharper.  I did just find a way to list the people tags down the right hand side like they were in 8 - they can't be right-clicked and added like in 8, but they can be dragged to the photo to add them so it's almost as good.
You mention bug fixes and stuff - is there anything that the version 11 organizer actually does better than the version 8 one (in terms of handling bigger image files, or a larger number of files without choking or other such performance/stability aspects)?  I don't use Elements' editing functions (I use regular PhotoShop if I need to edit anything), and I don't use any of the web-sharing or other online aspects of the Organizer, so I'm just trying to compare how the two versions' Organizer works from a purely private, offline image scanning and cataloging perspective.
Also, the new interface with 11 seems to be eating up almost half of my screen (side to side) - it won't let me make the left hand pane (that shows album or folder view trees) nearly as narrow as it could/should be, and because the old version 8 properties box is now part of the right-hand pane/column in 11 instead of being separately placeable anywhere on the screen, I have to make the right-hand pane very wide to be able to see and type in all the file names, notes and captions, so there's very little room left in the middle for my actual pictures to be displayed.  Are there some interface-changing options I'm missing to try to recapture some of that real estate for my photos to be shown?

  • I bought Photoshop elements 12 the organizer loads but the editor just churns

I bought Photoshop Elements 12 at Costco, the organizer loads but when I click to edit a photo the app says it needs to load the editor, gets my ID and password, and then just churns and churns for over an hour (and I've tried this multiple times).  It only stops when I use task manager to stop it.  I cannot edit my photos and am getting ready to take this back.  Elements 7 worked just fine.

    Hi,
Could you please try the following solutions and see if any of these work:
    1. Navigate to 'PhotoshopElementsEditor.exe' located inside:
    Win x64: C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Photoshop Elements 13
    Win x32: C:\Program Files\Adobe\Photoshop Elements 13
Right click on 'PhotoshopElementsEditor.exe' and select 'Run as Admin'
    2.  Just after this keep on pressing 'Ctrl+Alt+Shift' on Windows (or Command+Option+Shift on Mac). You will get a popup asking to delete Elements settings file.  Click Yes.
If the above does not work, please try the following:
    3. Please rename SLCache folder present at location "<root drive:>\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Adobe\SLCache"
Win: Also please rename opm.db on your machine to resolve this issue @  <root drive>\Users\<user name>\AppData\Local\Adobe\OOBE
          Mac : Users Library/Application Support/Adobe/OOBE
         Now re-launch the application.
    4.  In case any network printer is attached try to launch without network or printer uninstall or make different printer as default.
    5.  Try launching with anti-virus off or removing PSE from conflicting list.
If none of these work, please let me know.

    Hallo Monika,
    Gutes Gelingen!
