Photoshop Elements 7 tutorial book recommendation

Hi - I'm looking for a recommendation for a practical, how-to book for Photoshop Elements 7.  I am new to the software and have purchased a book which is pretty good but it's still too much like a technical manual.  Two books by Avi Muchnick, "When Pancakes Go Bad: Optical Delusions with Adobe Photoshop" and "I've Got a Human in My Throat:  MORE Optical Delusions with Adobe Photoshop" teach how to use the software in a practical fashion using fun projects - not just telling me what each function does as most technical manuals do.  The sample images are also included so that the user can work along with the book making it a truly a hands-on experience which is what I want.  I'm told that most of what is in these books applies to PE7.  I have two questions:
1.  If anyone has used either of these books, how well did you think they related to PE7?
2.  What other book would someone recommend as a good hands-on PE7 tutorial?  I do not have a very fast internet connection so, for now, I would prefer to learn using a book with software if possible.  However, I know there is a wealth of good on-line tutorials out there so any recommendations for those would also be appreciated.
Thanks!

I have used "How to Cheat in Photoshop Elements 7" and found it interesting.
But you can find lot of stuff online specific to your requirement.... Usually I prefer to read PSE blogs or online tutorials whenever I have any specific requirement in terms of Editing....

  • Re Photoshop Elements 10 - who can recommend reference manuals about how to work between my existing Aperture 2.1.4 and my just purchased Photoshop Elements?

I shoot in Raw with a Canon G9 Compact - after rapidly ditching iPhoto in favour of Aperture, I now want to learn to use Photoshop Elements together with Aperture - I can obviously buy something like the "Dummies" or the "Missing Manual" books about Elements 10, but what can you recommend that will help me learn about the best ways to move images between the two, and how to combine the best features of Aperture and Elements? Thanks for any advice.

I will defer to Sierra Dragon, one of the strongest advocates of Referenced Masters on this forum, but I suspect that your upgrade would only engage about 32 GB of HD space.
I have always used a Managed Library because I like the import-and-forget security.
AP2 arranges each master, thumb, and preview into a single folder. AP3 rearranges things so that all of the masters are in one folder, thumbs another, and previews in another. This has the advantage of making it easier to find your masters, should you ever have to open the Package and look for them.
AP3 is very nice and, with at least 4 GB of RAM, tends to be very speedy. Were I thee, I would force a TM back up and then turn it off while you run the upgrade. Turn it back on only when you are sure that all is well.
If you search this forum for posts around the time that AP3 first came out, you will find that there was a list of cache and pref files that sometimes had to be deleted. I believe that subsequent versions of the AP3 incorporated this into the program as I have not heard of that trick being necessary for years.
In my case, I had a 150 GB Managed Master Library, so I copied it out on an external drive and ran the upgrade there. Once I was sure that it had worked (and it did, first time), I copied it back. As you might imagine, 150 GB over FW800 took some time, but I had three copies of my Library at all times.
A final note, if you are committed to using Referenced Masters (as I now am, having sprung for a SSD) remember that they are write once/read many. That is, they are NEVER rewritten once they are out on disk. I have mine on a dedicated 250 GB and it never fragments. Your Library, on the other hand, reads and writes all the time, keep it on your largest, fastest disk.
    Best wishes.

  • Photoshop Elements 13 tutorial does not look like the version I have.  Help?

I recently got Photoshop Elements 13 because I believed it function somewhat like Photoshop, but cheaper.  The moment I opened it, I noticed the interface was completely different.  So, I clicked on the link for the beginners tutorial in eLive, which sent me to this link: Get Started with Photoshop Elements 13 - YouTube
However, the one in the video shown above looks slightly different from mine, making it difficult to follow along.  On the top bar in the video, it goes from eLive>Media>People>Places>Events.  The one I am using goes from eLive>Quick>Guided>Expert.
Could someone help me fix this so I could follow along the video instead of learning by myself?

    Hi,
Photoshop Elements comes in two main parts. You are looking at the Editor part, the video is showing the Organizer part.
Either select Organizer from the bottom toolbar of your screen or go to the Welcome screen and select Organizer.

  • Photoshop Elements 9 -Contact Book does not allow me to add new contacts.

I am using PS Elements 9. I added 17 new contacts when I first used it but now it won't save any new contact information. So any new people I want to email from within PS9  I can't. Anyone know why this happens and how can it be fixed. Any help appreciated.

It should be working, how are you trying to do it?
On the top menu of Organizer click on Edit >>Contact Book
    Click New Contact
    Enter details and click OK
    Select photos, click Share >>Photomail
Your new contact should show up in the list and you can add a checkmark and click next etc.

  • Photoshop Elements 6 tutorial online

Can someone tell me where I can find on Adobe site the Video tutorial, especially using layers.

    Hi Barbara,
Thanks for the reply. I did copy the entire folder structure over to the
server. Each online gallery is within its own folder. On the server itself,
the gallery displays properly. It displays properly when it is accessed from
my laptop by mapping the server drive. It does not display when logging on
to the website (hosted on the same server). Very strange, but I've found
others who have had similar problems, just no answers except the possible
flash detection problem documented in the link in the original message.

  • How do I take my Photoshop Elements 11 photo book and get it printed at Shutterfly or similar?

I have just spend 40 hours working on a beautiful photo book and I cannot find how to send it to Shutterfly for printing.  I selected the Shutterfly option when i started the book, and thought there would be a simple "upload and print" command somewhere.  I can't find any help for this on line.

While you are in the edit mode of your photobook, you should see three buttons along the bottom: Order, Save, and Close. Clicking Order will send the book to Shutterfly for printing.

  • LR tutorial/book recommendation?

What online guides, downloadable PDF files or books are there for LR3 (Mac) which are a quick, light and easy read?
I'm looking for something which will give me a firm understanding of the basics.
    What's available?

John Blaustein wrote: I am going to guess that the number of disappointed users is very small compared to those of us who have found LR 4.3 to be a huge improvement over LR 3.
That would be my guess as well.
Not every picture will by ripe for huge improvement, but the longer I use Lr4, the more I come to appreciate it's superior quality and expanded tool set.
Sometimes the improvements are obvious immediately, e.g. when there are highlights that are recovered in Lr4 that would have been "out of reach" in Lr3, but sometimes the improvements are more subtle, e.g. fill-light halos are missing: you only see that at 1:1, still it's a big deal in some photos. Also, in general, the color and tone is just better. I actually liked the over-saturated (and color-shifted) shadows which came sometimes in Lr3, but overall, having the more correct shadow color in Lr4 is a plus. Likewise, sometimes the whites get more compressed in Lr4 than Lr3, but it's done to preserve proper color when channels begin to clip at the top end, which in most cases, is a good thing, and when it's not, there is some remedy to be had using RGB curves (which are not in the Lr3 toolset).
PS - The automatic chromatic aberration correction in Lr4 is awesome - I've forgotten CA  exists when left uncorrected (yes, I know some people have pointed out that there are some few cases where it doesn't work as well as manual, still: Adobe did an excellent job with Lr4's automatic CA correction, in my opinion). And if it's the trickier kind, targeted global defringing exists, which works perfectly sometimes, and when not, can be augmented using paint-brush.
Speaking of locals, the expanded options in Lr4 are a godsend - I've gotten so used to them now, that I forget they don't exist in Lr3...
OK, sorry - I'll stop there: sometimes I get carried away...........
    About me:
Please don't flag me as a Fanboy or Defender - I'm not: I also have my complaints, which, when voiced, sometimes result in Fanboy/Defenders flagging me as a "basher" . My loyalty lies with the users, and the truth (as I see it) - not with Adobe, nor against them...
    Cheers,
    Rob

  • HOW TO LEARN Photoshop Elements "tutorial" or "book" ?

hello.  newby here.  can anyone recommend a good Photoshop Elements online "tutorial" or "book" that I can purchase to learn the "ins & outs" of PSE5.0?  I'm not that tech savvy, but I do have enough knowledge to tool around PSE making fixes here and there using clone, brush, etc.  I just can not find an efficient way to learn all about file specs, batching, converting to, etc.  any help would be greatly appreciated.  thank you!

    Hi,
You should take a look at www.lynda.com. They made al lot of courses also about photoshop elements. I don't know if PSE 5.0 is still available, but you can always check. If i am right you can also see what the content is of the course. I watched a few of these courses and i think it's very good.
    Hope it helps.
    Kind regards,

  • Photoshop Elements 8 for Mac

I've been looking on the website and find great videos for PSE 7.0 for Windows.  Where can I find the PSE 8 for Mac videos - how to get started, etc?  It's very difficult to look at other versions - especially for Windows.  This doesn't translate over.  I like to see exactly what I'm looking for!  Are there videos for PSE 8 for Mac?

For legacy features the link for OSE 6 would work http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BDVLW1en5Uw&feature=PlayList&p=B0021168253C62DA&playnext=1& playnext_from=PL&index=2.
for new features it is same as PSE 8.0 Windows.

I have just downloaded a trial version of Photoshop Elements onto my Mac Book Pro (10.9.4).  The installation to my hard drive went fine so I attempted to use Elements on an existing Photoshop file.  I did not see the Elements option in my filter menu and am uncertain as to how to "add" the Elemnts to my existing filter choices.  Please advise.

I'm sorry but it's very hard to understand what you mean. What filter menu? In which program? Do you mean you're trying to use PSE as an external editor with some other asset management program? Which one?

  • Looking For A Good Book Or Manual for Photoshop Elements 3.0

Photoshop Elements 3.0 is my very first photo editing program and am looking for a book that will show me how to use all of the features. Comments on the following 3 books would be greatly appreciated.
Adobe Photoshop Elements 3.0 Classroom in a Book
The Photoshop Elements 3 Book for Digital Photographers
Photoshop elements 3: The Missing Manual

I have PE3 so would be glad to pay the shipping if they are of no use to you anymore. Would both PE2 and 3 be necessary or would PE3 be good enough? Should I contact you by email?
Ken and Colin, your comments are a great help too. Thanks for the responds. I'll look online for The Photoshop Elements 3 Book for Digital Photographers. Wasn't thinking...the only ones at the stores are the more current versions.

I am using Photoshop Elements 11.  Do all .jpg formatted file have to be retangular in shape?  I want to create an oval .jpg picture to insert into a book.  Haven't been able to do so.  It would work if I could make the area outside the oval completely transparent.  Can anyone help me here?

JPG does not support transparency, so even if you create an oval with transparent background, the saved JPG will have white background. Instead, save it as a PNG, TIFF, or GIF which preserve the transparency.
Here is one of many ways to create your oval:
Create a new file the approximate size of the oval. Add the oval with the Custom Shape Ellipse tool, and simplify the shape layer.
In the Layers Palette, Ctrl-click the oval to select it and copy the selection to the clipboard (Edit > Copy).
Then do File > New from Clipboard. This creates the oval with transparent background cropped to the oval size.
Then save it as one of the file types that support transparency (and also supported by the application where you are sending the picture to).
Note:  Is is not even necessary to do step 2. That is only if some reason you want the oval to be tightly cropped. It is sufficient to delete the Background layer in step 1 (or turn off its visibility) and save the file. The oval will appear correctly in the book with either version.
