Photoshop Elements 8 Files Won't Open

Just got my 1st IMAC on Friday and am trying to figure it out.  I have downloaded a trial copy of Photoshop Elements 8 and am not having any luck opening the files I download.
The .zip file downloads into the downloads directory,  I double click on it (had to google how to unzip a .zip file on a mac) and move it to my folder called scrapbooking.  However, when I start elements and go to files > open file and go to the scrapbooking folder I can scroll up and down through the .jpeg and .png files and I can select a file to open, but the open button is greyed out and it won't open.
Any help or ideas are greatly appreciated!

Wait, wait. You're not installing Elements at all, by the sound of it. PSE does not install by drag and drop. Get that installer out of the scrapbooking folder (for your general info, programs need to go into the applications folder, not wherever you like. Sometimes it doesn't matter, but any program that has any kind of update function will not ever find itself if you put in some random place.)
Starting from the zip file: double click (click once if you're accessing via the downloads stack in the dock) to unizp it. Find the unzipped file and double click that to mount the disk image. Double click the disk image. Double click Setup in the files you see there to run the installer. Do NOT change the installation location from what PSE suggests.
However, your post is very unclear--I can't tell for sure if you already did install it in the wrong place, in which case you will need to uninstall it before doing all this. Uninstall by means of the uninstaller, which for PSE 8 is in the program's folder.
Apple has some very helpful videos for switchers on their website.

i'm using a Nikon D610 now and Photoshop Elements 10 won't open files in camera raw. How can I fix the issue? The version of camera raw is 6.7.0339

    Hi,
The D610 requires camera raw 8.3 which is not compatible with your PSE 10.
You need to upgrade to PSE 12 (or later) or use the free Adobe DNG converter. The converter will take a flder containg your NEF files and converte them to DNG files. The DNG files can then be used by PSE 10.

  • Photoshop elements 10 won't open up Nikon d4s RAW files

Photoshop elements 10 will not open up my RAW files from my new Nikon D4S.  My Nikon d700 RAW files tranfers fine.  I have updated my Camera RAW to 6.7 but it still does not open.  I do not want to convert my NEF files to DNG because you lose data.  Is there anything else I can do or another update out there?

Camera Raw plug-in | Supported cameras
    Camera Raw-compatible Adobe applications
Elements 10 ships with Camera Raw 6.4.1 and is compatible up to Camera Raw 6.7. Nothing after that.
The D700 requires Camera Raw 5.1 or later so Elements 10 can read those Raw files.
The D4S requires Camera Raw 8.4 or later so Elements 10 will never be able to read those Raw files.
Your choices are to convert the D4S Raw files to DNGs then edit the DNGs in Elements 10. Or upgrade to Elements 12.
I do not want to convert my NEF files to DNG because you lose data.
Where did you get that information from? What kind of data do you lose?

  • Photoshop Elements 6 won't open RAW with XMP file.

    Hi,
I searched for an answer but, could not find an answer.
I edited a RAW file with Photoshop Elements 6 (mac). I saved the file and closed the program. Next day I fire up PSE6 and open the same RAW file; the file is unedited. How can I open the RAW file with the edits I made the day before? I see the xmp file in finder.
I'm still on the trial version. Camera is a Canon 50D. I can open and edit the RAW with out problem. When I start PSE6 Adobe update fails and gives me the options: Ignore,Relaunch,Send report to Apple.
After that PSE opens for me
Help me Obi Wan Kenobi; you're my only hope.
    Thanks.

Are you hitting the save button? That is creating a DNG file someplace. If you just want to save your edits, that should happen automatically when you click Open or Done. If it doesn't, try going to your username>preferences folder and deleting the Adobe Camera Raw preferences.

  • Photoshop Elements 11 won't open an EPS File

Older versions of Photoshop Elements will. Is this an oversight or part of what seems like a plan to "dumb down" Photoshop Elements?

Support for many older formats has been dropped in PSE 11:
In PSE11, support for following file formats has been dropped :-

  • Photoshop Elements 12 won't open

I had a computer problem and had to re-load all of my software.  When I reloaded Photoshop Elements 12, with the proper serial number, it opened and worked--but only one time.  Now, it won't open at all.  What should I do?

    Swapnil,
There is a cache which has the name C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\SLCache. It contains an SLC file with a long name (X19zbGN...), and a subfolder called SLConfigs, which contains a subfolder called V7{}PhotoshopElements-EMT12-Win-GM.  That subfolder contains one file called SLConfig.
If I rename the folder, which is presently named "SLCache", what name should I give it?
Also, the Program Files folder doesn't say Program Files (x86), it just says Program Files.  Is the (x86) part important?

  • Photoshop Elements 10 won't open once closed unless computer rebooted

On a Windows 7 64 bit pc if I close Photoshop Elements 10 it won't open again unless I reboot the PC.  Any ideas?
    Thanks.

Thanks.  That solution seems to work for me.  It's sort of interesting so'll I'll add some other notes for posterity.  I had set the Welcome screen to go directly to the Organizer.  So, I was skipping the Welcome screen but not directly through the shortcut as recommended by p.hotodrawken
When I open from the normal shortcut PE 10 spawns six processes:
    Adobe QT32Server.exe *32
    ElementsAutoAnalyzer.exe
    PhotoshopElements 10.0.exe *32
    PhotoShopElementsFileAgent.exe *32
    PhotoShopElementsFileAgent.exe *32
    PhotoShopElementsOrganizer.exe *32
    PhotoShopServer.exe
When I shutdown by either File Exit or clicking the "X" these processes are left running.  If I manually kill the processes using task manager or reboot then PE 10 will restart.
    Adobe QT32Server.exe *32
    ElementsAutoAnalyzer.exe
    PhotoshopElements 10.0.exe *32
    PhotoShopElementsFileAgent.exe *32
    PhotoShopElementsFileAgent.exe *32
    PhotoShopServer.exe
When I open directly from the executable path fewer processes are loaded and they still don't all shutdown.  But, the organizer will reopen from the shortcut even if they're orphan processes are present.
    Startup directly to Organizer:
    Adobe QT32Server.exe *32
    ElementsAutoAnalyzer.exe
    PhotoShopElementsOrganizer.exe *32
    Shutdown from Organizer:
    Adobe QT32Server.exe *32
    ElementsAutoAnalyzer.exe
Thanks Ken for your help.  It will be interesting to see if Adobe fixes the bug.  But, I won't hold my breath.

  • Photoshop Elements 11 won't open on new computer

I recently purchased a new iMac and transferred all my software to it from my old computer.  Photoshop elements will not open.  The dialog box says "Check with the developer to make sure Adobe Photoshop elements Editor works with this version of OS X.  you may need to reinstall the application.  Be sure to install any available updates for the application and OS X."
My version is 10.8.4.  The "Read Me" file says it requires 10.6 through 10.8.
So I attempted to uninstall it and reinstall.
When I tried to uninstall I got a message that said it could not be uninstalled due to an error.  I followed the directions to restart and try again... and again.  Same message.  At the bottom of the message was another saying if that didn't work to use  a link to some Adobe "cleaner".  When I clicked to download the "cleaner" I got a message that I had to UNINSTALL the Elements program before using it.
Are they trying to make me crazy?
Next I tried to install Elements from the original disk and got this message:  "Installation to case-sensitive drives is not supported.  Please choose a different drive location to install."  Huh?
I just want to do a photo project as a gift for my parents.  Can anybody help me with this technical odyssey?
    Many thanks.

  • Photoshop Elements 4 won't open, Mac Leopard

    Photoshop Elements 4, OS X 10.5.7
Been using Photoshop Elements 3 and 4 with iPhoto 6 for years.  Recently, when I tried to open Photoshop from iPhoto, Photoshop crashed.
Since then, I have been unable to open Photoshop from this, my home user account.   The load pane opened, Photoshop started loading stuff, got to "loading settings" and crashed.  After all preferences and settings have been deleted it gets to "reading workspace modes" and crashes.
Photoshop *does run* from other accounts on this computer.  I twice trashed Photoshop Elements 4.0.app and every Adope file I could find and then reinstalled from DVD.  That doesn't help.
It appears to me that there must be a pathological item in Photoshop's input queue in this account.  If so, I have been unable to find where the input queue is lurking.
The iPhoto entry that caused the problem was not at fault.  It gave no trouble when I booted from a SuperDuper clone and used the copy of Photoshop on the clone.  I have reported this to Apple as an iPhoto bug.
Can anyone tell me where to find the input queue to Photoshop so that I can purge it?

A couple of things to beware of when posting to Adobe forums by email:
A line containing 'wrote:' (and perhaps variants of this) will be removed along with anything below it
anything following a string of five underscore characters will be removed
brackets other than curved parentheses (i.e. square, curly or angle) will have unexpected consequences.
Prefixing a paragraph with a 'greater than' symbol and a space will cause it to appear in a 'quote' box. Some other formatting possibilities are given at

  • Adobe Photoshop Elements 4 won't open

It worked fine from the day of buying until today.  I clicked the link in All Programs as usual and it opened onto the welcome page but none of the options will work at all.
I use Windows XP Home Edition version 2002 Service Pack 3 with an AMD Athlon (rm) 64 x 2 Dual Core Pricessor 6000+ 3.02GHz, with 3.00GB RAM

Go to c:\Program Files\Adobe\Photoshop Elements 9\Locales\<locale>\Plug-Ins\Import-Exportand you will find twain plug-in. Remove that plug-in from that location and copy it somewhere else.
Now launch PSE and check if it works.
    Alternatively,
Try resetting the PSE preferences by
       1. Close Elements.
       2. Launch the Photoshop Elements Welcome Screen and hold down ctrl + alt + shift as you click Edit.
       3. Continue to hold the keys until you see a message box asking if you want to delete Photoshop Elements settings file; click Yes. Elements will open with default preferences.
In case any network printer is attached try to launch without network or printer uninstall.
try and let me know your comments.

  • Photoshop Elements 11 won't open

Just downloaded PSE11; can't get it to open. Desktop icon does nothing; starting it from the .exe file gets things going, but when it reaches the 'initializing' phase, up pops an error message: "Adobe Photoshop Elements 11 has stopped working. A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available."
I have uninstalled/reinstalled, but no luck. I've tried navigating to a jpg and right-clicking and selecting Open With, but again, no luck.

  • Photoshop Elements 13 won't open

I installed Photoshop Elements 13 but it won't open and I am not getting an error message so I don't know what to fix.  Photoshop tells me that sign in is required, so I sign in:
Then I accept the license agreement:
Then, nothing happens, the application does not open.  What do I need to fix?

a single user license entitles the user to install and activate on up-to two computers.  but that license doesn't really permit that 2nd installation to be used by another person.
so, if you son was the user on your computer he could sign in using his adobe id on your computer and use pse on your computer (as well as his own -  but not both computers at any one time).
if a 2nd user (you) wanted to use pse, they should purchase their own license.

  • Photoshop Elements 8 won't open my jpgs

I'm sure this problem has something to do with my cat who loves to sit on my keyboard and wreak havoc, but since yesterday when I try to open a jpg nothing happens.  I'm just doing what I normally do, File > Open then navigate to the jpg, but since this latest cat-sitting incident when I do this the jpg will not open.  I get nothing but the big gray Photoshop main page.  I hope that someone has seen this before and can tell me how to fix it.  Thanks!

    Hi Jen,
    I'm sorry but I LOL'd seeing your post - the cat-sitting-on-your-keyboard thingy!
I don't think your cat would've messed up your keyboard - because if that is the case your File > Open (with Mouse) should work!
Also, from your Finder (Mac) or Explorer (Windows), can you right click an image file/ PSD file and Open With > Photoshop Elements to see if that opens?
Btw, you've mentioned you're seeing 'Photoshop screen' - are you on Photoshop or Photoshop Elements? They're 2 different softwares.
Also you can try clearing prefs - http://forums.adobe.com/thread/375776
Please do post a screenshot if possible to help us help you.

  • Photoshop Elements 10 won't open

I have Photoshop Elements 10.  It worked until I upgraded to Mountain Lion.
Now when I try to open it, I get two error messages: 1: "Could not open a scratch file
because the disk is not available."  2: "Could not initialize Photoshop Elements because
the disk is not available."  Any
    ideas?

Actually, you need to do a little more than this. What you did only deletes the .plist file and when you do a major OS X upgrade (10.6 to 10.7, 10.7 to 10.8, for example), you need to delete ALL the preferences. (Uninstalling doesn't remove these.)
Go to your username>library>preferences and delete:
    com.adobe.PhotoshopElements.plist
    Adobe Photoshop Elements 10 paths
    Adobe Photoshop Elements 10 settings
(If you use organizer, also the com.adobe.Elements Organizer plists [there are two])
And any lockfiles with the same names
That library is hidden in 10.7 and 10.8. To see it, in the Finder click the Go menu, then hold down the Option key and it will appear below the little house for your user account. While you're in there also go to the Saved Application States folder and delete any for PSE.
