Photoshop Elements 9 - unable to use brush in adjustment layer

I'm new to Adobe Photoshop Elements and have recently purchased Elements 9. I am having problems using the brush in adjustment levels.
I've opened a RAW image and converted it to black and white by desaturating it using an adjustment layer. I'm then trying to adjust the black and white image using several adjustment levels. I'm using the brush to black out the parts of the image in the particular adjustment layer I don't want changing. This worked initially, but for some reason, the brush stopped working in the adjustment layers. It's a soft brush set to 300px, the mode is "Normal" and opacity is 100%. Put simply, it's not obliterating anything in the layer, nor does anything appear in the thumbnail over on the right (both these things happened before)
The brush works normally when adjusting an image with no levels i.e. when you simply open a RAW or TIFF file and use the brush.
I've tried uninstalling the programme and reinstalling, but the porblem persists.
Can anyone offer any help? It's frustrating as I can't selectively adjust my image. Am I doing something wrong, is it a glitch, or is it just a simple case of ticking a simple box some where in the pre-sets?

Check that you have your brush set to black (foreground color black)
and that your actually painting on the layer mask (click on the layer mask
to make it active).
Try just painting on the mask of your adjustment layer used to desaturate the photo
with a black brush (the color should come back)
Sometimes with multiple adjustment layers, the strokes on one layer mask may overlap
the strokes on another.
If you want more control over a black and white conversion, you might try something like
the following.
1. Add a hue\saturation adjustment layer and change the layers blending mode to Color
2. Add another hue\saturation adjustment layer and move the saturation slider to -100
3. On the first adjustment layer (the one with the color blend mode), move the hue
and saturation sliders for different black and white effects.
4. If you want to add a color tint, set the top hue\saturation layer to colorize and
adjust the hue and saturation sliders for different tint effects.

Photoshop Elements 8 blending / air brushing
I am adding a rock formation to a Raytrace I made in architectural software. I used the eraser tool to blend the rock formation into my picture and it doesn't look bad but I want to improve the way it looks. The issue I am having is where the rock formation starts and stops in the photo. I added trees in the background to smoothe transition. I want it to look like the rock formation is actually in the patio. Right now it looks like I pasted it in and feathered the edges, which is basically what I did. The transitions needs to be abrupt but realistic.
Can you advise the proper process for doing something like this.

Let me start by saying that the best option would be to find or make a rock formation model and render it in the software. Assuming you can't do that, this image presents several problems merging 2d with 3d.
1. First, your 2d pasted image isn't seamless.You should go in and use the clone tool to remove straight lines. Try to make it flow with the rock formation. I'll post an image of this postworked at the end.
2. I used your image and bumped it up to add more rock formation then I masked out what I didn't need. You can use the eraser and erase what you don't need if you prefer. (I tried cloning and it just looked better just using what you had. To be clear, I duplicated your image then moved it up to cover the insert area over the pool area. I removed everything but the rock I wanted to use. I used the move tool to adjust where the formation fell in the image.)
3. The 2d rock formation is casting strong shadows. Either render the image again and try to duplicate the rock shadows or remove the shadows from the rock formation. To remove the shadow, create a blank layer over the rock formation. With the clone tool selected, look in the options bar and check the box that says something like "Use all layers" or "Sample all layers". Change the blank layer's blend mode to "Lighten". Now use the clone tool to remove the shadows. Leave the edges.
4. The 2d rock formation sides are not crisp enough. You can use the clone tool to firm up the edges. I would suggest doing this on a blank layer. Leave the blank layer in Normal blend mode. Try to contour the rock so it looks natural.
5. The 2d rock formation is the wrong tone. It's too light and lacks contrast. Use a levels adjustment layer to try to match contrast and tone. Use the mask to limit the effect to just the rock formation.
6. The 2d rock formation is too detailed when comparing it's texture with the surrounding 3d objects. Use the Smart Blur filter to reduce detail.
Note: You may need to clean it up a little by using the clone tool on a blank layer after running the smart blur filter.
Other items....
1. I would fix the corner around the swimming pool deck tile. (See yellow arrow in the image showing problem areas.)
2. Floating tree. Use the clone tool on a blank layer to copy the tree trunk and lower limbs to the left of the pool furniture. Use move tool and bring it over floating tree. (I cloned some of the brown area around the tree also to firm up around the rock formation.
3. I would firm up by using the clone tool the tree around umbrella. You could get away with through the railing and the side of the house the way it is currently feathered.
4. I also used a levels adjustment layer to make the water fall lighter.
Above shows problem areas that I fixed to show you what can be done. (If your software has the capability to render shadows you might consider doing that. If your software allows you to render out objects with an alpha channel, I would suggest doing that. You could get much better results with the trees if you did that. Basically, you could render the image with trees and render it with only the trees visible. Sandwich the rock formation between the two renders. Load the alpha channel so you only get trees for the tree render. Either mask out or erase tree trunks and branches you don't want overlapping your rock formation. Note: Although Elements doesn't have a channels palette, you can access one if your software renders one out with the image. To get the alpha channel selection if that's possible, use Selection<Load Selection.)
Above shows the what it could potentially look like postworked as I mention. I just hit the items that really caught my eye and stood out as problems. I think if this was my image. If this was mine, I would also add some more trees or work on the right hand side of the image behind the pool deck...
If possible, add the trees as postwork. X-frog has some free sample models that might work out. (Some of the tree models include a PSD of the models rendered over transparency. It might be worth downloading a couple just for that. I think the Autumn Acer Japanese maple and Basic Sweet Birch and Japan Japanese Walnut would work in your image. I believe each of those include PSD files of the items rendered over transparency that you could use. It says on the site that commercial renders are okay...you just can't resell his models or distribute his models. X-frog goes over the what's okay in the blog if you read through the comments.

Unable to Load Photoshop Elements from DVD using Internet Explorer 10. Error: need IE 4 or Higher
Upgrading my Laptop and moving my Photoshop Elements (~2010) to my Windows 7 machine. Message says I need Internet Eplorer 4.0 or greater. I'm on IE 10.
That's a bug in the Adobe installer which seems to think IE10 is IE1.
Either put IE10 into IE9 or lower mode using Compatibility View.

Help! Photoshop CS6 hangs when using brush, clone, healing brush tools etc on Mac
I am having a big problem when using the new CS6 on my Mac (os x 10.7.4). When switching to a new tool, like a brush, or clone stamp, or healing brush etc, Photoshop hangs for about 20 seconds before resuming. It's not 3rd party plug-ins, because I get the same behaviour when I run using the shift key and third party plug-ins are disabled. It doesn't happen every time, but it happens frequently. I've heard that others have had similar problems... are there any solutions - is it a known bug?

Photoshop CS6 unable to use due to display driver (Intel) problem
Hi
I am experiencing problems using Photoshop CS6 (not extended version). I have recently installed Design standard and I'm not having this problem with Illustrator.
Each time I run PS, I receive a pop up with "display driver Intel HD graphics drivers for Windows 8(R) stopped responding and has successfully been recovered". PS opens but I cannot use it and I have to force end task in task manager.
I have an Asus Laptop (i7) with Windows 8.1, graphics card Intel HD 4400, it also has an NVIDA Geoforce GT 740M graphic card.
so far:
I have installed the latest driver from Intel (10.18.10.3345).
I have re-booted in Safe Mode and can open PS - I receive the message "Photoshop has encountered a problem with the display driver, and has temporarily disabled enhancements which use the graphics hardware". I can use PS in safe mode. I then re-boot and can use PS normally, however after another re-boot or awakening from sleep the problem reappears.
I have tried switching to 'Basic' or "Normal' in the advanced settings. The problem occurs again.
I connect this laptop by VGA to an external Dell monitor, however it does not just happen when connected to the external.
Any help in resolving this would be very much appreciated!

is uninstalling the graphics card the only fix for this? I'm reluctant to try this, and cause more problems.. -
Photoshop Elements 6 not opening jpegs following adjustment.
I am getting the following error message: Photoshop Elements could not complete your request because a JPEG marker segment length is too short (the file may be truncated or incomplete).
This error message has occured with images that I have imported and renamed in Bridge and to which I have made adjustments in Photoshop Elements 6. The images which I have renamed but not resized or adjusted or touched in any way are opening without a problem. Whatever the problem it is doesn't seem to be anything to do with re-naming. This problem has occured previously but because it involved only a small number of files I just re-did them and the problem did not re-occur. On this occasion it's 40+ files so it's time to find out the cause if possible. Help would be appreciated. Thanks - VictorYour computer may have insufficient RAM. When adding text you are temporarily increasing the file size by adding a new Layer (the text layer) which requires more memory.
Try this:
Add your text, then click Layer >>Flatten image. Then save and press Ctrl+W to close the file. Then move to your next open file and repeat.

Photoshop elements 13 crashes using styles
Photoshop Elements 13 and Photoshop CS6 both crash when trying to use the styles drop down menu to add styles on my mac with yosemite OS. Photoshop CS6 functioned fine under Mavericks OS so I reinstalled Mavericks but the problem still occurred and I reformatted my drive and reinstalled Mountain Lion then reinstalled Photoshop and problem still occurred so I purchased elements 13 and the problem occurs with elements as well so I have gone back to Yosemite OS. I have only the default Layer Styles Installed. I do Have Plugins Installed But It Was Crashing prior to installing them. Trying to find a possible cause for the crash ? Photoshop CS6 and Elements seem to function OK except for styles menu issue.
Can someone help me please. I am having the same issues as above and getting no help through searches or adobe chat.

Photoshop CS4 crashes when using brushes in a mask
Hi!
Retoucher here at work using a brand new Mac Pro with all the current updates from Apple (Mac OS X 10.6.5 etc.) quite often gets crashes in Photoshop when working with the brush tool in a layer mask. He had the same problem on his previous Mac Pro which was on a few years older Mac Pro running 10.5.8.
We had hoped that the problems might go away when starting from scratch on his new computer. No old settings or anything was transfered.
The interesting part is that our other retouchers with more or less the same setup don't seem to have this issue. (?!)

It's a freshly installed machine so no, I haven't done any preference trashing or permission repairing.
The Performance Preferences were set to the default: 70% and OpenGL acceleration on. I've now asked him to set memory usage to 100% and OpenGL acceleration off. We'll see if it makes a difference. -
Photoshop Elements 8 Commercial Use Questions
I am planning to record a youtube video of me doing a "speedpaint" video as they're called by many on the internet where I will paint something using Photoshop Elements 8 and am wondering if it's ok to show Photoshop's User Interface in the video... And also if it's ok for me to "monetize" the speedpaint video of me painting with youtube's ad revenue service, the focus is on me painting the video, so i am wondering what the official word on this is. I would also like to know if Photoshop Elements 8 can be used for commercial purposes, for instance if I create a painting or any kind of jpeg using Photoshop Elements 8, will I be able to benefit commercially off of my artwork by selling the digital artwork? I am confused now because of something I read. Any help would be much appreciated!

What you're planning probably won't incur the wrath of Adobe but you won't know that until they decide to issue you with a cease-and-desist letter. I doubt that they will.
I've seen projects such as yours done countless times without incident. Doesn't make it OK and does not mean that Adobe condones it or gives any kind of permission to do so.
What is certain though is that you are definitely permitted to use Adobe software for commercial purposes ie. make money off it. Even students can do that with the Educational version.

Photoshop Elements 8 Commercial Use
I need to know if it is ok to use an image (jpeg) I created using Photoshop Elements 8 commercially as I wish to post this image on a Social Network that can potentially sell your photos. I need an answer from an Official Adobe Employee who knows the answer to this. I cannot seem to find a clear explanation to this question in the Terms and Conditions of Photoshop Elements 8 or anywhere else. So please if this could be answered once and for all it will put my mind to ease.

Why can't i upload raw pictures into photoshop elements 9. it use to let me but not anymore?
I have Photoshop Elements 9 have been using it for a couple of years now and have always been able to upload the jpeg and raw pictures and now it is not allowing me to upload raw.
I have uninstalled and re installed but still not working.
Can someone please give me some ideas on how to fix this.

Should I re-install Photoshop Elements 10 installed using wrong disk (Disk 1 32bit on a 64 bit CPU)?
I installed Adobe Photoshop Elements 10 using Disc 1 for Windows 32 bit on a Windows 7 64 bit computer instead of using the correct Disk 2. Should I uninstall and re-install using Disc 2 in order to get the full benefits of the program, or does the Disk 1 software detect the correct operating system and install the correct version any way?
Unless you're also installing PRE (bundle) or the PRE trial (PSE only version), you're fine, since PSE is always 32 bits.
