Photoshop Elements versus Lightroom

I am a beginner and have Photoshop Elements on my computer.  I have about 40 camera chips that I would like to organize.  Someone suggested I should use Lightroom instead of Elements as it is easier for a beginner to use.  Any suggestions?

No one has mentioned this yet, but using 40 memory cards (i.e. camera chips) is unnecessary. I would imagine most "professional" photographers don't even use that many. The images on memory cards should be transferred to your computer or laptop hard drive, which then allows shooting more pictures with your camera using the same card. You should also "backup" the images transferred to your hard drive using a portable external hard drive or online backup service.
If you are using that many memory cards (i.e. 40) for a specific purpose it would help if you explain why. This we we will help us to understand your specific needs and provide more detailed suggestions to assist you.

Stephylei you will want to download the Mac versions of the installation files.  If you purchased the software from Adobe, and choose the download option at the time of purchase, then the download will be available under your account.  You can find more details at Find a download link on Adobe.com.

  • Help with upgrading from Photoshop Elements to Lightroom 3

Any tutorials/books/best practices on upgrading from PSE to LR 3? I have thousands and thousands of photos in PSE, and I'm sure the upgrade is not as transparent and smooth as Adobe promotes it to be.
Any suggestion, advice or past experience will be greatly appreciated.

here is a set of instructions on doing what you want.

Lightroom detects if your computer has a Photoshop Elements catalog and can import photos and data from the PSE catalog into a new Lightroom catalog. Lightroom imports photos and data from Photoshop Elements 6 and later on Windows. Lightroom imports photos and data from Photoshop Elements 9 on Mac OS.
Note: For help troubleshooting errors or problems when importing PSE catalogs into Lightroom, see the Adobe Support article Lightroom 3 cannot upgrade Photoshop Elements catalogs (cpsid_85517).
In the Library module, choose File > Upgrade Photoshop Elements Catalog. The Upgrade Photoshop Elements Catalog dialog box displays the most recently opened Photoshop Elements 6 (PSE6), Photoshop Elements 7 (PSE7), or Photoshop Elements 8 (PSE8), or Photoshop Elements 9 (PSE9) catalog.
To choose a different PSE catalog, click the Photoshop Elements drop-down menu.
To change the destination of the new Lightroom catalog, click Change and navigate to a different folder.
Click Upgrade to import the PSE catalog into a new Lightroom catalog.

  • Photoshop Elements 10 & Lightroom 4

I am just getting started with processing my photographs and I am starting with Photoshop Elements 10.  I am wondering if it makes sense to also use Lightroom 4.  What benefits, if any,  would there be from adding Lightroom 4?

The main benefit to using Lightroom will be if you're shooting photos using Camera RAW.
PSE10 includes the Organizer which is a separate application to catalog and organize your photos. Lightroom also catalogs and organizes your photos. Since you're just starting out, it makes a lot of sense to first learn PSE's Editor and Organizer. After you've gained experience with them, you'll be better able to determine if the cost of Lightroom makes sense for you.

  • Will Photoshop Elements or Lightroom run on OS 9? [was: An upgrade or a downgrade?]

I was considering buying my husband lightroom or photoshop elements for Xmas. He is currently using photoshop cs 8.0. He hasn't purchased a new cs because of the cost. It's out of our budget and he doesn't like subscription software. Does either program have any advantages over the old cs version. He mainly uses it to edit family photos and occasionally design a poster. Are there any other mac compatible programs you would recommend instead of Lightroom or elements?
    thanks!

He is currently using photoshop cs 8.0.
Which Mac and operating system is your current Mac?
Presumably your husband has an old Mac since Photoshop CS is a PowerPC application which does not install or run on modern Intel-based Macs.
So Lightroom and Elements (which require current Macs and operating systems) will probably not install or run on your current older Mac.

  • Aperture versus Photoshop Elements versus iPhoto

Please forgive my ignorance, I'm a lifelong PC user that has finally seen the light and converted to a MAC. I'm a bit confused on how I would use these three apps together. If I primarily take pictures, connect the camera to the MAC, edit/tag/organize photos, how do these apps work together and where are the files actually stored? Should I import into Iphoto first and then into Aperature, or straight into Aperture. Is there any purpose for using Photoshop Elements if I own Aperature?
    thanks in advance,

Just to throw in my two cents, I am also a recent convert from the iPhoto/PSE combination to Aperture. Of course I still have PSE, but haven't needed to use it since I started using Aperture, as the editing tools are so powerful compared to those in iPhoto. Some key points I would make regarding aperture:
    1. iPhoto is non-destructive, as was pointed out above. You can always revert to your original, and can even find the original in the finder if you open the iPhoto library package and navigate to it. But Aperture is much more flexible and space efficient because it seldom creates additional files unless you ask it to. It just previews what your edits look like - it doesn't save an edited version of your photo. This means the library takes up less space, and you can back out/turn on individual edits and see the effects. Very cool.
    2. The iPhoto/PSE combination does not deal with editing of RAW format photos as well as Aperture. If you need to edit a RAW in PSE, editing is done in 8-bit color, and I believe saved as an 8-bit TIFF back to iPhoto. Aperture works in the full bit-depth and maintains the RAW file until you tell it to create something else. While I still have the "problem" (not to start a whole debate as to whether it is really a problem) of PSE only supporting 8-bit color for editing functions, I almost never need PSE. If I do I guess I can just put it at the end of my workflow and save my final jpeg or whatever.
    3. Aperture supports editing plug-ins, so that it's editing capability can be expanded. Granted, many if not most of these plug-ins cost money, but you could purchase several and have capabilities in some areas that exceed that of PSE, but still invest less money that you would for full Photoshop and have the benefit of not having to leave Aperture to do these edits.
    4. Aperture supports tethered shooting and remote control of your camera, if your camera supports these functions. It may be that only a minority of photographers are interested in these capabilities, but still, if you are one of them, it is important.

  • Photoshop Elements or Lightroom for editing Jewellery?

    Hi there,
I am new to photo editing and wanted to know the best software that's best for editing jewellery. I am really not sure if Lightroom or Elements would be best and would appreciate anyones expert advise and experience.  Maybe there is another software package more suitable, would appreciate anyones help.
    Many thanks
    Kate

As said above, definitely not Lightroom.  You can't make the most of shiney things without selections and layers.  As to whether PS or PSE would be better, well the problem with asking that here is you probably won't find anyone who knows anything much about Elements.  But if put on the spot, I'd say get a monthly CC subscription.  You'll never grow out of it.

  • I'm trying to understand the difference between Photoshop Elements and Lightroom software.

Does one have things the other does not?

    Hi,
Lightroom is to manage photos and produce derivative images without ever modifying an original file. Its processing functionality has a narrow feature-set covering the most common needs of professional photographers whereas Elements is a simpler yet powerful photo manipulation tool. Elements is designed to satisfy the needs of photo enthusiasts who like to manipulate images.
You can also go through the thread to understand the basic difference between PSE and Lightroom.
    Check if this helps.

  • PS Elements versus Lightroom

Any opinions from those who upgraded from PSE to Lightroom? I use PSE 5 but am able to do most of my adjustments using the Adobe RAW Converter in PSE 5. How does Lightroom compare to the PSE Organizer and PSE ability to make RAW adjustments? I am a serious amateur - is Lightroom something I should consider?
    Thanks,
    Alan

I switched to LR from PSE5. I still use elements for some things, but I rely on LR exclusively 95% of the time. I shoot entirely in raw. If you are shooting jpgs, I don't recommend LR. But in raw, LR is fast easy and powerful. It is also better at organizing your data.
It edits in 16bit mode. Elements edits in 8 bit.
There are lots of editing tools that LR doesn't do, so I still use elements sometimes. It is very easy to switch into elements and send the edited picture back to LR.

  • I don't want to import PHOTOS. I want to get only one into Lightroom for temporary work. How do I do this. (the photo is now in Photoshop Elements).

Don't want to import all photos from my camera or anywhere else. I only want to work on one image then put it back into Elements. Please tell me how to do this and I would appreciate a detailed answer. Please do not be vague.

Lightroom is not a file browser, It isn't anything like the organizer in Photoshop Elements. Lightroom uses a catalog, which is a database. That database keeps track of the location of images that have been imported, as well as all of the adjustments that you make to those images using Lightroom. The import process is a process of showing Lightroom where the images are located on your computer. You can't just open an image in Lightroom, make changes and then close it. Lightroom doesn't make changes to the original image. Your images are left in their pristine state. All the changes are stored in the catalog. And when it comes time to share an image that has been adjusted in Lightroom you need to export a copy that includes all of those changes. It's a different workflow, and one that you need to become accustomed to. I suggest that you watch a series of short tutorials that will help you understand more completely how Lightroom works.

  • Lightroom 5 with photoshop element 11

I currently using Photoshop element 11 and I want to buy lightroom 5.
can i install lightroom 5 without removing the element 11?
because I still use the video editing from the element 11.
    Thanks

Photoshop Elements 11 and Premiere Elements 11 are standalone products. Each comes with its own Elements Organizer 11. When both are on the same computer they share the same Elements Organizer 11 catalog. Consequently, Premiere Elements 11 will continue to have its Elements Organizer 11 even if you uninstall Photoshop Elements 11.
Lightroom is also a standalone product. Any questions about Photoshop Elements and Lightroom integration should be directed to the Adobe Photoshop Lightroom Forum Photoshop Lightroom   and Adobe Photoshop Elements Forum Photoshop Elements
Please let us know if I have targeted your question about all this relating to Premiere Elements.
    Thank you.

  • Link between lightroom and photoshop elements

    Hello.
A few days ago I installed photoshop elements 6 on my Leopard 10.5.3 instance. I have also Lightroom 1.4.1 installed, but he/she doesn't seem to detect the elements installation. I can't do an edit in photoshop.
With which mechanism the Lightroom program detects if there is any photoshop installed?
Should I use the alternative editor path to call Elements 6? And if so, will I have the same functionality then?
Is the direct link only there for CSx?
In order to test in a "clean" environment, I have made a fresh installation of Leopard, Photoshop Elements and Lightroom on an external disk, but even then Lightroom doesn't detect Elements 6.
However, if I install Photoshop Elements 4, everything works fine.
    Any help is much appreciated!!
    Marc.
PS: this tech note doesn't help me - www.adobe.com/go/kb401629.

    Kenny,
    1) There are known problems of LR not recognizing Photoshop CS / PSE automatically as present. Uninstalling and reinsalling PSE might help.
If now successful, and if you're on a windows system, adding the following key to your registry might solve the problem:
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\App Paths\PhotoshopElementsEditor.exe]
    @="C:\\Program Files\\Adobe\\Photoshop Elements 8.0\\PhotoshopElementsEditor.exe"
    "Path"="C:\\Program Files\\Adobe\\Photoshop Elements 8.0"
    2) You can have as many external editors as you like. Go to Preferences/External Editing, setup the executable and format you want to pass to it, then do a "Save Current Settings as New Preset". This will establish an additonal external editor for LR.
