Photoshop error - layer clipping.

Whenever I try to add a new adjustment layer, it adds it like this:
I know that it's clipping onto the layer below, but I don't know why. Because while I know the easy fix of holding down alt and clicking between the layers, it's still quite frustrating that it clips to the layer below every.single.time without me having told it to do that.
is there a way to make it stop?

In the adjustments panel uncheck Clip to Layer to prevent future unwanted clipping masks.

  • File is not compatible with this version of Photoshop error

    Computer crashed yesterday and now I am getting "File is not compatible with this version of Photoshop" error and unable to opening in PS CS5 or Fireworks CS5. Any ideas? Also tried the PS repair download and would rather not pay $30 to find out it can't do it. Seems like a common error but in all of the forums I haven't found a solid answer. Appreciate some real advise.
    Thanks in advance

    This is the free app that all the PSD repair hacks are based on: Telegraphics - Free plugins for Photoshop & Illustrator...and other software
    There are 3 possible reasons for that error: file corruption on disk, more than 8000 layers in the file, or a layer somehow went over 30,000 pixels in a PSD file (which would be legal in PSB, but not in PSD).

  • Error Layer comps to files. Layer not available?

    Sometime when I use "Scripts/Layers Comp to Files...", I have this error:
    Error: General Photoshop error occurred. This functionality may not be available in this version of Photoshop.
    - The object "layer comp 952649985" is not currently available.
    It arrived when I have more then one files open. In Standard Screen Mode. In 2 Up Tile.
    When I close all the open files except the one I will create PNG with, the script works fine.
    To me, it seems that the script lose the original file and the focus move to another open file where Photoshop can't find the Layer Comp.
    I have CS5 Version 12.1x64. I'm on Windows Seven.

    The problem seems to be already solved, but I'm commenting this for future reference.
    This has happened to me too and I think I know what causes it.
    It happens when you...
    1) Do "Save for Web" with the "All User Slices" selected in the dropdown menu "Slices".
    (This can only be done with a file that has a user slice)
    2) Then try to use the "Layer Comp to Files" script to a file that doesn't have any slices.
    To avoid this you need to once open a file that "has" a user slice and save with
    the "All Slices" option in the "Slices" menu and then go back to the file you want
    to run the script to.
    When you run the script, the saved "Slices" option from the previous export seems to
    be used and causes an error when there are no user slice.
    I also found a fix to the script to avoid this error to come out.
    This can be also applied to the fix to "remove the numbers" added to the head of the
    exported file names.
    The number removal script goes something like this...
    var fileNameBody = exportInfo.fileNamePrefix;
    if (fileNameBody != "") fileNameBody += "_";
    fileNameBody += compRef.name;
    this should replace the "Layer Comps to Files.jsx" lines 188-190.
    In addition to that, the script below needs to be added below line 818 and line 863.
    (This line numbers are those before any alterations to the "Layer Comps to Files.jsx" script)
    var idSWsl = charIDToTypeID( "SWsl" );
    var idSTsl = charIDToTypeID( "STsl" );
    var idSLAl = charIDToTypeID( "SLAl" );
    desc4.putEnumerated( idSWsl, idSTsl, idSLAl );
    The line right above where the above script should be inserted should read as the following...
    desc4.putPath( id44, new File( exportInfo.destination + "/" + fileNameBody + ".png") );
    Actually it can be added any where after the "desc4" variable is declared but I specified just
    to make it simple.
    This sets the "Save for Web" "Slices" settings to "All User Slices".

  • Opening a smart object (photoshop cc layer) in camera RAW?

    Opening a smart object (photoshop cc layer) in camera RAW? I have opened a processed RAW file from lightroom into photoshop cc, then done various processing and created a merged layer. I've then convered this layer to smart object (it displays the smart object layer icon). When I double-click this layer thumbnail it opens up in a seperate photoshop tab and I want to go back to RAW. I've tried this on various files and I can't seem to reopen smart objects back in RAW. I have file handling preferences set to "prefer adobe camera raw for supported raw files" and have done a fair amount of 'googling' but not getting anywhere. Thanks for any help

    Try the Filter menu item then select Camera Raw Filter. it should then open in ACR for further editing. No it is not the RAW image but the smart object you have.

  • [AI CS4 Mac] How to Create a Layer Clipping Mask?

    Hi Folks,
    How does one go about creating a layer clipping mask using the SDK?
    What I want to do is to simulate clicking on the "Make/Release Clipping Mask" button (the left-most picture button) that is at the bottom of the Layers Panel.
    Thanks!
    -- Jim

    Clipping masks work, but they can be a little clunky (as you might tell from their weird way of being set up). You might find opacity masks more flexible. An opacity mask is basically a group attached to a layer, in which you store paths that represent holes in the mask. These holes have an opacity value for how much shows through. So anything in the mask group is a hole (there can be many) and anything in the layer (as normal) shows through those holes. Setting it up is simpler but it depends on the kind of clipping you're trying to do which is easier. We find it easier when doing knockouts for labels on lines, but clipping paths are also possible, just a little more annoying.

  • After Effects error : layer does not have a source.

    Hi All,
              I add a Text layer and then add my custom fill  effect to it. Then I call AdvItemSuite1()->PF_ForceRerender(in_data, &(params[0]->u.ld)) from AEGP for all the layers. But only for Text layer, AE pops up a dialog displaying the following error :
    After Effects error : layer does not have a source.
    (26::335)
    Why is this happening? What other call can I use to rerender all the layers?
    Thanks & Regards,

    AEGP_SetStreamValu() seems like an alternative solution...

  • Photoshop CC layer title length work around for generator?

    Hi
    I am using generator to export assets at a number of different sizes. I have found that there is a pretty small character limit on the layer title field which means I cannot export all the assets I need from that layer. I have to duplicate the layer a few times and then add the other asset sizes into the new layer titles. I discovered the issue as I constructed my export syntax in notepad and tried to paste it into the layer title field and it was not accepted - was like I could not paste into it at all. It was only when I grokked that there was a character limit (why so short?) in the layer title that I realised what was happening.
    Does anyone know of a work around to this?
    Thanks in advance for any pointers!

    Hi,
    Do you have 14.1.1 or 14.2.1 installed? We increased the layer name limit to 255 characters in 14.2.1, but maybe that's still too low for your needs?
    If you have 14.1.1, and don't want to update to 14.2.1 just yet, you can use the Duplicate Layer command, as the character limit for that input field is 255. See this blog for more info (Blog | Working Around Photoshop’s Layer Name Limit | Uncorked Studios)

  • Layer clipping mask help

    having trouble with layer clipping masks - I guess I've never really used them before. I want to make a clipping mask from a layer but that layer has more than one path on it. It doesn't seem to be working. Does it need to be a single one? Can I use a compound or a group(i've tried both but they didn't work for me...) help?
    also - Is there a way to invert the mask?
    thanks!

    Hi Oompal
    Simple, let´s see if I´ve understood your problem
    Create any shape and position where you like. Now go to layers pallete and click create clipping layer button (bottom of the layer, the first left buttom). That´s it
    Now that shape will be used as clipping layer, and everithing you create inside this layers will be clipped.
    Am I right?
    Guidelines: Path intended to be a clipping shape must be the topmost of the layers, be selected on the artboard and its layer must be highlighted on the layers pallete to enable the action.

    I am getting a photoshop error could not load photoshop because the preferences file was invalid and cln't load actions because of an unexpected end of file encountered.

    Are you trying to open Photoshop directly, or open it by double clicking on a Photoshop document, like a PSD file?  If the former, then you might need to reinstall.  Resetting Preferences would be the firs step, but I am not sure if that will work if Photoshop is not opening in the first place.
    Try doing so anyway.  Hold down Shift Alt Ctrl (Shift Opt Cmd) while opening Photoshop. OK the message to delete Preferences.
    If you get the unexpected end of file error while trying to open Photoshop via a PSD document, then there is more than a good chance that that file is toast.
    If still stuck, we need to know Operating System, and Photoshop version.

  • Entering Time Machine From Mail Gives Photoshop Error!

    Hello everybody,
    This is a very strange one: If I enter Time Machine when Mail is in front, and if Photoshop is opened, I always get this error from Photoshop: "Could not complete your request because of a program error."
    What happens is this:
    • I choose the Enter Time Machine command (Entrer dans Time Machine in French, in fact).
    • I hear a beep, but the computer goes right into Time Machine, without a hitch.
    • I can do anything I want in TM.
    • After that, when I activate Photoshop, I see the Photoshop error dialog. I close this dialog and Photoshop works perfectly well.
    This happens whether a file is opened in Photoshop or not. It does not happen when Photoshop is in front, +*it happens only when Mail is in front*+.
    I am puzzled...
    RTP

    Hi joshz,
    Thanks for jumping in. Well, this is most surprising. There is no record of any error caused by this, no reference to this one way or the other, no error of any kind... I searched with different keywords, Adobe, Photoshop, Time Machine, TM, Mail, to no avail. Anyway it's easy as I can reproduce this error dialog at will: With Mail in front, I enter TM, hear the beep coming from Photoshop (!!!), get out of TM and there it is in Photoshop.
    Then I look into the console. An error reported by this event should be the last one and dated correctly, right? Well, there is nothing new.
    What literally baffles me is the fact that this happens only when Mail is the active application when I enter TM. I tried every other combination to no avail.

    I must say that it was very thoughtful of you to translate your post in French. I do appreciate the courtesy. And yes, your French is certainly acceptable, taking into account that it is not your mother tongue and that you probably do not use it very often. The reason why I mentioned the command name in French is that I was not sure of the exact name in English as my OS is in French. OK, I speak it with what my Hoosier friends call "an accent". But then I tell them... "Look who's talking!"

  • Photoshop CC layer error

    This problem starting happening last week and still hasn't been fixed. I tried updating my photoshop cc but the problem persists. it doesn't happen when I switch over to Photoshop CS6.
    If I select a layer in my file and try to move it around the canvas, photoshop cc automatically selects another layer and I end up moving entirely different layers around. This only happens when I'm moving by mouse, and does not happen when I'm moving using my keyboard.
    I can't effectively photoshop cc anymore because of this error...

    Sounds like you have Auto-Select checked in the tool options bar for the Move Tool.
