Photoshop for Undergraduates

I am developing a course on photography and was intending to include lessons in the use of Adobe Photoshop.
Unfortunately, I discovered that the student's cost for a license would be nearly $200.
This is unfortunate since PhotoShop is a great project; however, in view of the cost
I am now planning on usng the freeware Gimp.
I suspect that Adobe might eventually lose customers by not having a marketing
option for instructional use. Nevertheless, my students and I will probably do very
well with Gimp.

Here in NY most community colleges have Photoshop available in at least some of the on campus computer labs.
Regardless, if you're going to have the students shoot RAW and you want to go open source, I'd suggest taking a look at RawTherapee. Truth has a date stamp - just because someone says it won't work on a given platform doesn't mean that is still the case even as of the latest compile.
Having said that, I just bought Photoshop and with the exception of not yet knowing how (if?) to spot white balance an image, I'm doing raw processing just about as quickly and, sad for this open source aficianado to say, getting better results out of my crappy photography skills (only had a dSLR for 2 months now) with ACR / Ps than I was with RawTherapee.
Have you checked out the curriculum thingees that Adobe has in their educational resources area? Might be some neat ideas for assignments.

Hello,
To make a 24-bit AVI file in Photoshop, go to File>Export>Render Video. Then, under File Options, choose AVI from the Quicktime Export drop-down menu. Click the Settings button. Click the Settings button in the AVI Settings window. Change Compression to None, and then choose "Millions of Colors" from the Depth drop-down under Compression.
The Millions of Colors option is for 24-bit video (8-bit R+G+B channels, 8x3=24). Millions of Colors+ is for 32-bit video (24-bit video plus an 8-bit alpha channel).

I just updated Creative Cloud and it disappeared from my desktop. In my profile, there is no longer a subscription to Creative Cloud--Just Photoshop for CS3 customers. What is going on?

A few minutes ago I got a Creative Cloud update notification. I ran the update and Creative Cloud disappeared from my desktop. What happened? I still have Photoshop CC and Bridge CC. But will I still get CC updates? Also I no longer seem to have a Creative Cloud subscription--just something that looks like a monthly fee for keeping Photoshop for customers with Photoshop CS3+. Great tutorial. When I build a timelapse I start by importing the image sequence and then make the proper frame size on export. Is there a benefit to creating a project at the proper frame size and rate first?

How do I get a photo into Lightroom if I first opened it in Photoshop for editing

Sometimes I open an image (not in the Lightroom catalog) directly into Photoshop for editing and when I'm done would like to finish editing it in Lightroom. What's the best way to do that?

Any reason why you're not opening it in Lightroom first? RAW converter? "Typical" workflow would be to open everything in Lightroom, do basic development, and then kick it over to Photoshop as needed. Lightroom tracks it the whole time, so when you save your file in Photoshop, so long as you don't rename it, Lightroom will keep track of it as an alternate to the original.

You can download the CS6 trial version just like anybody else.
Once you download it, you can install it, input your serial number, register it and apply all necessary updates.
An alternative, if you know how to access your Adobe account, under My Products you'll find your Photoshop CS6 registration, next to which you should find a link to download CS6 if you originally bought it as a download

Is this facility available on the photoshop for iPad app, if not can anyone tell me one that it is available on?

I'm wondering if there is an app available for the iPad that allows me to type in a word, copy the word layer, change the top layer colour, view the grid and increase the grid divisions, erase every other layer then print it. I know you can do this on photoshop for the PC but wondered if this was available on the iPad version, if not does anyone know an app that will allow me to do this? Thanks

Search the web for a reputable retailer that may have some old full version of Photoshop for sale. IMO CS3 would be best it was a very good and stable version if Photoshop. It may cost the full $700 price. CS6 available from Adobe currently will run on XP less some features for CS6 does not support GPU on XP so don't buy the Extended version for 3D support requires GPU support. CS6 standard cost $700 Extended $1000. CS6 with fixes applied works well. You can download a trial version that will work for 30 days...
