Photoshop Freeze on File Open
I'm using Photoshop CS3 on Windows XP. When I try to open a file from File>Open the Window appears for a fraction of a second and then disappears. At that point Photoshop freezes. The Task Manager says it's still running, but everything is frozen. I can't click on minimize or close, none of the tool bar icons, nothing. I can create new files. I can use Browse to open files, or I can just drag them in from a folder. One of the plugins I was using would also freeze Photoshop ocne I pressed ok for the filter to apply. The plugin/filter was NvidiaTool's NormalMapFilter. Resetting the Prefs and/or deleting the .psp file seems to have fixed that.
I've deleted the .psp file. I've done the ctrl-shift-alt to resest the Prefs as well. I've switched my default printer. I deleted a printer I didn't use anymore.
Any ideas what's causing it?
To test Mylenium's theory, do you get control again if you hit the Esc (escape) key? That would be the equivalent to hitting the [Cancel] button on the File - Open prompt. If not, an off-screen window is not the problem.
I believe you can clear up window positioning problems by resetting Photoshop's preferences... Press and hold Control-Shift-Alt when first starting Photoshop from its menu entry or shortcut. You have to be quick.

Mavericks freezing on file open/save
Having upgraded my iMac (24 inch mid 2007) to Mavericks several non Apple application that tries to open a file open/save dialogue box freezes when the dialogue is attempted to be displayed.
Main application that is failing is open office but I have written an application in XCode that also fails. If you're having problems with freezing in the FILE -> OPEN dialog run this command fron the terminal.
sudo update_dyld_shared_cache -force
That seems to have worked for me.
In this case, the freezeing and/or beach ball of death has something to do with dynamic links being corrupted. This command clears them out. -
We are having a problem where everytime we select a file, the spinning beach ball of death appears for a long period of time. Eventually, you are allowed to open the file, but it is extremely frustrating to wait for 1 minute or more for every import or open...It happens both from within the file/open dialog in an application, and when you try to select and open a file in the finder. It seems to be better when we first start the computer up, and gets progressively worse as time goes on...
Help!
ArneAre these files on your local drive or are they on a server somewhere? If it is a local drive have you set the drive to sleep? If so, it will take about 30 seconds for a drive to spin up before it can load the file you have requested. If it is a remote file and the drive is asleep when the file is requested it could easily take a minute or so for the entire process to complete itself, between waking and transferring.
There is a great FAQ that may be able to help you with this issue located here:

Aperture/Photoshop...file open from
Hallo!
I have a Problem, I manage all my photos with Aperture, and would like open directly from Aperture a file in Photoshop...how must i dow?
thx
Yoghihoi joghi
alles fein i de schwiiz? damit alli chönt mitläse schriib ich jetzt aber besser in änglisch wiiter...
there are 2 ways to open your files in photoshop:
1. you open the image "in external editor" (apple-shift-O - check your aperture preferences to set photoshop to be your external editor). this will create a new version in aperture. once you made your changes, hit "save" in ps (not "save as") and aperture will reflect the changes in its new version.
2. to avoid the version (or to process a raw file in photoshop), you can open a file in photoshop through an "automated export". create an os x folder and attach an automator function that opens every new file in photoshop. then in aperture simply "export version" (or original) to this folder and it will automatically be opened in photoshop as well.
na dänn, hoffe das hätt g'holfe und ich wünsch no en schöne tag!

On a mac pro , Leopard 10.5.2 server unlimited, OD master, PDC, SMB shares, im getting ready to shoot the mac, it logs on most of the time, but theres so many problems with network freezing and machines freezing at logon. the smb log shows tonnes of these :

If you browse the forum there are a number of posts similar to yours. See here:
http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosxserver1053comboupdate.html
I would make sure you have a fallback position first before applying the update as well as going for a manual download rather than using Software Update. By fallback I mean a bootable clone of the Server prior to the update. Try not to clone a 'live' Server.
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1142
Explains what the update 'fixes'. Of particular interest is:
File Services
Addresses an issue that could cause the AppleFileServer process to stop accepting connections while
consuming most of the available CPU time on the server.
The smb.conf file is updated to include the line "acl check permissions = no" in order to provide
expected permissions behavior for Windows clients connecting to the SMB service.
It's not something I would do but you could forego the update and amend the smb.conf instead.

Why wont my psd files open from Bridge into Photoshop
When I try to double click on a psd file is Bridge, it opens in some other image viewer... not Photoshop. Under File>Open With, there are a number of
possibilities, but none of them are PS. There's Fire Fox, and Microsoft Mail and Painter X but not Photoshop. I can open Raw files but not Psd's or
jepgs... What could possibly be wrong. I cannot find a preferance I've marked incorrectly.First, I have never made any changes to this area in Preferences. When I saw the suggestion to check file associations in Bridge Pref., I looked through the file asssociations and mostly I found listed 'none beside most types,' but beside Psd, Tiff, and Jpegs it said, "Explorer Settings." Why in the heck would that be there? I clicked on that and noticed I could direct a search through my computer for something else, so I when straight for Adobe and on to Photoshop Cs5, and clicked OK. After that, I could open the psd's in Photoshop and under File>Open With, PScs5 was listed now as the defautl... YEA!... But when I tried the same with jpegs, it didn't work. I put in PHcs5, but they are opening in Camera Raw. Now while I could want that option, I don't want that as a default. I'm totally perplexed as to how this could be happening. I've been using Bridge since it was first introduced into PS, and I've never had a problem like this. I hope someone who is more educated in this area will please shed some light on this for me.
I'm in an advanced Digital Imaging class, and I asked my all knowing teacher and she was confused as well.
Thanks. 7SUS -
Photoshop 7 won't open an my image?!
I have been using a program called Theme Builder for Blackberry...I have set the preferences on this program to open any images I want to edit in Photoshop 7. The problem is when I click to edit an image (png), photoshop opens but all I get is a "new" window with the name of the image I want to edit in the "Title" field. When I select "ok" I get a white box in the top left corner of photoshop with nothing in it.
Could anybody tell me how to solve this problem as its really starting to annoy me and I can't find the answer anywhere.
Thanks in advance.Have you tried starting Photoshop then doing File - Open to see if the file opens that way?

Why is Photoshop CC freezing indefinitely when opening files?
Anytime I open a file in in Photoshop CC it will freeze for indefinite periods of time, even when my laptop is left for hours. A few updates ago, the program worked perfectly smoothly, even with multiple large files opened, but even small ones now make it freeze up. I end up having to force close the program in Task Manager because no other programs will work at the same time when this happens.
I don't know what I'm doing or what might be wrong with my laptop, but the program used to work like a charm and now it doesn't. I haven't noticed problems with any other programs. However, I am running a trial program right now instead of the full version like I was before.
Why might this be happening and what can I do about it?This is more likely to do with your operating system than Photoshop, even if other applications are able to save OK. We can see you are using Windows, but what version, and how long has it been installed? And what are the hardware specs?
Something that might cause similar problems would be if the operating system was being starved of resources, like if you have Photoshop > Preferences > Performances set with Photoshop using 100% memory. If you are using Task manager to close Photoshop, have it open to the Performance tab so you can see what is happening when you try to save. Is memory and/or CPU maxed out, for instance? -
Photoshop freezes when opening files?
Everytime I try to open a file, Photoshop freezes. I tried updating with Adobe Cloud but that freezes too. Its really frustrating because I have a deadline for Monday and I have not been able to use Any program for a month now. I have no time to keep trying things. Ive tried everything everyone posted here and none of it works. I blocked my payment for May 1st too because im not gonna pay for something that doesnt work. Any suggestions anyone?
This is why I suggest everyone keep one of the older Photoshop also loaded on the computer.

Just updated camera raw to 6.6 in photoshop 5 won't open raw files
Just updated camera raw in photoshop 5 to 6.6 on a mac pro running 10.6.8 os wont open a raw file and program freezes and must force quit to close. Lightroom update has problems as well. Don't recommend updating to either
Photoshop CS5, 12.0.4 x64
2.93 GHz Quad-core Intel Xeon Mac Pro
8GB 1066 MHz DDR3 RAM
Photoshop is configured to open Raw, JPG & Tiff.
Raw files in CR2 format from my Canon EOS 5D MarkII
Applied the Camera Raw 6.6 update last night. There were no problems noted during the update. Did not realize until later that the files would not open any more - I was working with PSD files created several days before. I forwarded several crash reports to Apple after I force closed Photoshop several times. When I opened one of the three files Photoshop would not exactly freeze but the whole system became slow - the force-close menu took a while to display after I right-clicked the icon in the dock. If I dragged and dropped one of the three into the dock icon, Photoshop would open with usual audible disk sounds but the sounds stopped quickly and the program was frozen.
I recovered using suggestions from the forum, used Time Machine to return Photoshop, Bridge and the Adobe folder in the path /Library/Application Support/Adobe/ to the state before the update. The Camera Raw Plug-in is now at 6.5 and I can open RAW files again.

Photoshop CS4 Crashes on File-Open
After using Photoshop CS4 for 9 months, I now get an instant crash whenever I open an image with File-Open. I see the image I wanted to open for a few seconds at the back of the error message (1st screenshot, below) and then it disappears - on clicking OK on the first error message, I get a second error message (2nd screenshot, below). I upgraded to version 11.0.1 - no difference. I have completely uninstalled all plug-ins - no difference. I have completely uninstalled and then reinstalled Photoshop to version 11.0 - no difference. I have upgraded a clean install to version 11.0.2 - no difference. I have deleted the prefs file - no difference. I deleted a set of new fonts I had installed after reading a thread on this forum - no difference. Occasionally, I CAN open a file from Windows Explorer with the right-click menu Open With... Adobe Photoshop CS4 then, after doing that, FIle Open does not cause a crash for opening one file, sometimes 2 but then I get the crashes again until the next time I run Photoshop but it seems random as to when it will open a file or not.
I am now considering uninstalling all Adobe products, manually clearing out the registry and then trying another install but all this is taking time I don't have.
Does anyone have any other suggestions I could try. I am getting desperate!
Thanks in advance for any help you can give.Memory address issues can be tough to track down. Often, they will occur when a program either mis-reports the memory addresses used, or tells the OS that it has released them, when it has not.
Though written with video editing in mind, there still might be some tips for setting up your computer, in this ARTICLE. If you have Win7, please look down-thread for Black Viper's tuning page.
Now, Adobe programs have always been great at reporting their memory usage, but it could still happen - I've just never encountered it over the decades.
Good luck,

Photoshop CS6 won't open new or existing files
I've had Photoshop CS6 for several months now and never had any problems. Until today; I can no longer open files or create a new one using either method: (File -> New) or (File -> Open). I restarted my computer this afternoon and am wondering if an update took place on my system. From what I've read in these forums, that's usually the culprit.
One thing that concerns me is the System Info. It seems to be saying that I have Windows NT, which I do not. Here is the complete System Info output:

If anyone has ANY suggestions, please let me know. I am a web designer and depend heavily on Photoshop working properly. Thanks! After posting the question, I realized that NT is just the family of OS (Windows 8.1). I seemed to have solved my problem... for now. I went to startup programs and disabled a couple of programs from opening on start. They were related to the Spoon.net application. After restarting, things seem to working fine again.
I hope this at least helps someone else. -
Trying to create a Photomerge in Bridge, when the files open in Photoshop ( small jegs ) , I get a error message of " Unable to process latte files " / " null is not an object "
Please helpWait a second, Photoshop can make lattes now? Personally I prefer my coffee black, but man have I been under-utilizing this program.

When I first installed Adobe Photoshop CS6 I was unable to run Photoshop or Bridge CS6. Photoshop would give me an error about "could not open a scratch file because the file is locked. If I ran either of these programs as an administrator they would run without issue, this led me to believe that there was a permission issue somewhere. After some digging I found out the both Bridge and Photoshop try to create a temp file (similiar to Photoshop Temp2777223910092) on the c:\ drive of the computer. In my case the user that I was logged in with did not have access to write to the root of the C:\ drive. Note that you run the program as the administrator and change the scratch disk location as that changes the preference for the administrator user and not the user that you are currently logged in as.
To get around this issue I first had to give the user that I was logged on with write permissions to the root of the C:\ drive. Next try and run Photoshop, you will get an error another error about the scratch disk and about and invalid or missing setting file. To correct this you need to have run Photoshop as an administrator, next you can go to Users\Admin\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS6\Adobe Photoshop CS6 Settings and copy Adobe Photoshop CS6 Prefs and/or Adobe Photoshop X64 CS6 Prefs to Users\<your logged in username>\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS6\Adobe Photoshop CS6 Settings.
Photoshop and bridge should now start up with no issues.
I hope that this can help others out there as this caused me a great deal of frustration when upgrading to CS6.station_two wrote:
OK, here comes the explanation of what the scratch disk does and why it's optimal to have it on a physically separate internal drive (not partition!) other than your boot drive
I probably shouldn't say anything since it could complicate this thread, but the rules of thumb can be different under special circumstances when SSD is involved.
IF you have a LOT of empty space on your SSD-based system drive, then Photoshop can actually work great with it's scratch setting pointed at the system drive. This is because a) SSD transfers are much faster than spinning hard drives and b) there's no seek time, so simultaneous transfers to/from scratch and swap files aren't devastating to performance, and you can see a net gain because of the increased I/O throughput over what's possible using a separate spinning drive for scratch.
But if you don't have a huge amount of free space (hundreds of GB) on the system SSD, it's definitely better to use a separate drive, as station_two has said.
Also, up to about a year or so ago, you had to try to severely limit write activity to your SSD drive, since you could actually wear them out by repeated high data write activity. That's pretty much a non-issue now with the advent of things like the SandForce in-drive controller that does wear-leveling inside the drive. Modern drives will last 10 years or more in normal typical use, without special consideration.
As it turns out, making a RAID array of SSDs is a great way to boost performance across the board, have bunches of free space, and ensure even the heaviest usage doesn't shorten the drive life. I have done so, creating a 2 TB system drive C: made from 4 SSDs and Photoshop's swap file (and pretty much everything else) pointed to C:. This system flies, and I can barely tell when Photoshop and/or Windows "goes virtual" and starts using its scratch/swap files heavily. I don't even notice Photoshop auto-saves.
Sorry for the SSD diversion.
Back on topic:
Pretty much everyone who's successfully using a computer - Mac and PC users alike - comes to realize after a while that the task of integrating things on their computers and making everything work falls on THEM, not the developers of applications like Adobe. Some applications pose unique challenges, but to think you can just throw up your hands and try to make it someone else's problem when something goes wrong simply isn't a viable strategy. Maybe that's how things should be, but it's not how it is.
For those of you struggling to get Photoshop to run properly, bear in mind that it's on you to get things working. It works for most folks. It could be a configuration or setup choice you've made that may need revisiting, or some kind of restorative activity that you need to do, or even something very minor like clearing your Photoshop preferences, but it may well take your learning new things and doing things you didn't think you'd have to do to get back to where you can edit photos. It's no one's problem but your own.
So let us here on the forum help you - when we say to do something, try it. We're not here to jerk you around; we're users just like you who have already found the ways to make things work, and we'd like to help you do the same.

Clicking JPEG icon launches Photoshop but doesn't open file
I run an IMAC Power PC G5 with Tiger 4.11 and recently did a system "archive and install". My JPEG files can only be opened within PhotoshopCS with Command+O. Double clicking an icon from the finder launches Photoshop but does not open the file. Neither does dragging icon on to application icon in the dock.
I ran the disk utility to verify and repair preferences and repair disk.
I reset "Launch Services". Then, I trashed "Adobe Photoshop CS Settings" and relaunched the program -- no change.
Other files (ai, pdf, etc.) open fine. I'm only having trouble with PhotoshopCS.
