Photoshop hanging FCP 7

We have multiple MacPro's on an Apple Xsan server all loaded with 6GB ram. When switching back and forth from photoshop to FCP 7, Final Cut sometimes doesnt respond (spinning Ball) All other apps work including the finder. I have waited 5-10 mins and Final cut has returned. Seems like it could be a ram issue. It is happening on multiple systems.
Any thoughts
Keith

Seems like it could be a ram issue
Very hard to believe RAM is the issue. How did you arrive at this conclusion?
There was some noise a while ago about how FCP would not revive after being hidden when switching apps. Your issue could be related.

  • Photoshop hanging when saving for web

I have a problem with photoshop hanging when I try to save for web. The only way to get photoshop to respond is to end task
I have reinstalled photoshop but this didn't help. I am not sure where to look for log files to try and pinpoint what the problem might be.

    Hi,
What version of photoshop and operating system are you using?
What are the pixel dimensions of the images your using in save for web?
Prior to photoshop cs6, photoshop save for web would sometimes be quite slow if your image was very large.
(larger than you might post on the web, such as a full size camera raw file)

I've been using a menu repeatedly in different projects for a month or so... and now suddenly when I click the 'edit in photoshop button' on my menu's, photoshop hangs, followed by the error 'Adobe Photoshop Cs5 has stopped working.' and then windows closes the program.
Any ideas as to the cause or cure to this annoyance?
(I am going to cross post in the Photoshop forum, I just thought since this problem is somewhat encore related maybe someone here would know the solution)

Are you able to launch Photoshop directly (not using Encore)?

After having tried CS Review yesterday, Photoshop hangs until a connection is made.

So, Photoshop Startup Time has increased from 2-3 seconds and Windos 7 with SSD disk to several minutes.
This is unacceptable. Can this be fixed as soon as possible?

  • Problem with Photoshop hangs/freezing for users on a terminal server

    Dear Forum!
I'm having some trouble with Photoshop freezing over a period of ~20 minutes when you (1.) user the eraser with special brushes and (2.) copy and paste material from a PDF to Photoshop. As you might notice by the size of this post i'm getting quite depserate over here and need some help.
    A Little background information...
Photoshop CS6 is installed on a terminal server with ~25 Active users where 3 of them are using Photoshop.
The operating system on the server is Windows Server 2012 R2.
There are no additional add-ons just a plain installation of Photoshop in that matter.
The server uses 40-60% of the memory most of the time (mostly a bit less, some times a bit more but never 100%) and 40% of the CPU.
There's enough space free on the disc.
    The problem in detail...
There are two occasions where the freezing has occured most of the time. After it hangs for the first time, it will happen everytime you do any of the operations over a period of ~20 minutes and it's Mutual for all users. When it freezes, the whole terminal session freezes but the program i still responding (it's not getting set to "not responding") when viewed from Another user through the task manager. Ending the process as an administrator sometimes work, although from the moment i end he proces it takes about 10-60 seconds Before the program actually Closes and the user gets back Control. The easiest thing to do most of the time is if an administrator forces them to log out.
    1. The first occasion is when you use the eraser with a brush that's not standard but manually added. The names of the brush packages used are:
    Extacy__Elemental
    KKC_Fractal
    Kornkid's_Grunge_Set
and the problem is with all brushes inside those packages. The way i evoke the problem is the following:
         1. Start Photoshop
         2. Create new
         3. Fill the background with any color
         4. Select the eraser tool
         5. Change the brush to one of the ones mentioned above
         6. Program freezes
    2. The second scenario when the problem occurs is when the users copy something from a PDF to Photoshop. The way i evoke this is:
         1. Open a PDF
         2. Select area and copy it
         3. Open Photoshop
         4. Create new
         5. Paste into Photoshop
         6. Program freezes
Solutions we have tried so far...
I've been working on this for several round now and i'm not entirely sure on what exactly i have done. I will try and do the following solutions once more but i'm pretty sure that i have tried most of them.
    Update graphic card drivers.
    Resetting all Tools:
         1. Select options for a tool
         2. choose "Reset all Tools"
    Resetting presets:
         1. Hold ctrl + shift + alt while Photoshop is starting
         2. select "yes"
Tested if it matters if i have a pen connected or not, which it doesn't.
Removed the special brushes (but it still freezes when copy/paste from PDF)
Removed "save in background" and "automatically save recovery information" options
    Updated to latest version.
    Turned off OpenGL
Solutions i haven't, but will try...
    Reinstall Photoshop
    Change font preview size
         1. Go to "type"
         2. select "Font prview size"
         3. select "none"
    Delete system font cache
Close all Adobe applications including the Creative Cloud desktop app (if installed).
    Navigate to \Windows\ServiceProfiles\LocalService\Appdata\Local
Delete the *FNTCACHE*.DAT or *FontCache*.dat files.
NOTE: The asterisk (*) indicates various numbers, letters, or words, such as FontCache-S-1-5-21.dat or COFFfntCache.dat.
    Delete Photoshop font cache
Exit Photoshop and the Creative Cloud desktop app (if installed).
    Navigate to the appropriate folder
    Photoshop CS6 and earlier.
    Windows XP: \Documents and Settings\Local Settings\Application Data\Adobe
    Windows 7: \Users\[user name]\AppData\Local\Adobe
    Photoshop CC and CC 2014
    Windows 7 and 8: \Users\[user name]\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CC or CC 2014
         3. Delete the TypeSupport folder (Photoshop CS6 and earlier) or the CT Font Cache folder (Photoshop CC and CC 2014), and empty the trash.

    Hi Mylenium!
Thanks for your reply but since the users work on the terminal server via remote dektop the only data sent through the network is a "Picture" of what is happening on the server. All the operations are handled on and by the server and nothing is executed on the users local machine. Also all files are stored on the server therefore the load on the network is minimum.
We are not the first in the World to run this setup and i know that this is possible to do since i've read about others running PS like this.
    Kind Regards,
    J. Alm

What's happening? why i can't use 64bit version of ps?

    > Could you write what are those fonts exactly so i can delete them
Were that it was so easy. Adobe makes over 1000 fonts. They know that those will not cause a problem. They can provide you with a list of those. There are another 900,000 fonts (I guess) in the world, and more being made every hour. Adobe does not track those, but knows that a small percent of them are defective, and can cause the problems Chris mentions.
The trick is to find which font is bad. I only use the Adobe fonts, so I never have had a problem. The people who search out free fonts through the web are generally those that get the diseased fonts.
The solution is to remove all fonts other than those from Adobe, Microsoft, and other reputable makers. Test if the problem goes away. If it does, then there is a bad font (or several) in the fonts you deleted. Add fonts back slowly, never more than a few dozen at a time, and test with PS after each addition. When it breaks, you know a bad font was in the last group of fonts added.
This will take a bit of time, but hey, they are free fonts.

  • CS6 PhotoShop hanging when opening PDFs - help?

    Hi all,
I'm IT support to a team of studio artists who are having some issues with our newly upgrade CS6 Premium suite (Mac OS 10.6 + Mac OS 10.8).
Situation: (Mac OS 10.6 problem) someone will be working on a 2GB network file, and tries to open a PDF to import elements into the current document. Machine has 12GB RAM (7 allocated to PS, 2 free, the rest used with OS/other apps).
After choosing the PDF file, the window will pop up and become 'stuck' in front of all other windows, all other programs. Activity Monitor describes PS as hung (red text) but Finder still recognises it as working (but will not show the program title in the menu bar). It is possible to CMD+TAB between programs, and the pallets recognise mouse-over actions but are unresponsive to click. Again, "Import" window is on top of all other windows, and can be moved but does not respond to mouse clicks.
Activity Monitor also shows intense disk activity (60-80MB/s) on local volumes. It appears not to be network activity though (while hanging, 50-150KB/s). RAM allocation doesn't change during this time.
If you can be patient enough, the system often recovers PS, but this can take a few minutes.
The extreme disk activity implies that PS is processing on the scratch disk, but what or why is it doing this, and is there any way to disable it. Would it have anything to do with Background Save or Autosave? Something to do with purging memory?
    Any advice is appreciated.
    Thanks,
    James D.

Hey Chris or anyone else from Adobe - is there any chance we can get this looked at slightly more in-depth?
This issue is re-occurring across our four Mac Pro workstations of various ages and operating systems.
Why is Photoshop writing out the contents of the RAM when I open a pdf?
We're working with machines that have 8-16GB worth of RAM and having to write that out to the scratch disk every time you open a PDF is very unproductive use of our time.
It's nice and easy to blame everything else like fonts or drivers or operating system or graphics cards or RAM or Acts of God, but how about for a second we assume that Photoshop is the cause, look at how we'd test for it and ultimately get it resolved.
This is the sort of issue that the average consumer would probably just ignore or deal with, which could explain why you guys don't believe this to be a bug. Seems to be picking up a lot more attention on here.
    Thanks,
    James.

  • CS5 Illustrator, InDesign & Photoshop hang frequently

I regularly use Adobe CS5. I have been having for 2-3 months now persistent hangs of InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator when leaving the software open while working on projects where I access various software in the workflow of the project. While I'm actively using the app there is no problem. But when it is left idle while I'm in other software working, or while away from the computer, when I return to the app to use it again, it is very frequently inoperable due to a hang.
I've looked at the reports and the clues vary. Sometimes it's due to sleep/wake, but many times due to other activity of the system. This doesn't seem to happen to Flash, Dreamweaver or Fireworks. I haven't noticed fonts or font functions being implicated, though I can't rule it out completely. Reports often cite some process like Web Kit or Airport or another Apple component or activity is shown as suddenly unable to complete its task.
When it started, I was running 10.6.4. I've installed updates to 10.6.5 then later to 10.6.6. This doesn't seem to have changed the pattern. It did start happening shortly after I had installed a new Office for Mac 2011, but research I've done doesn't turn up anybody talking about Office affecting Adobe products. Over the time period this has been happening I've gotten several new fonts but I never have all my fonts open. Different fonts are open at different times for different projects, so that aspect is harder to evaluate.
Early on I tried trashing preferences, repairing permissions and other common troubleshooting. I even ran Diskwarrior. No change.
I'm perplexed over this. Would like to fix it, but not sure what could be the cause.

Have been looking through logs inside the System Profiler. In the "kernel.log" I see things that may also be a clue (see below).

  • Photoshop hangs recovering file

Photoshop froze while working on a file.  I did Ctrl-Alt-Del.  When I reopen PS it tries to recover that file but it just hangs.  I've tried closing and reopening and it still tries to recover it.  I even rebooted and it continues to try to recover.  At this point, I don't even care about restoring the file.  I just want to open photoshop!  Is there any way I can clear the file it's trying to recover.  Temp files?

Try a Prefs reset. Hold down Ctrl-Alt-Shift while starting Photoshop and accept the reset.
It might be a good idea to make duplicates of important files you are working on every 10-15 minutes. Storage is inexpensive and I don't know what to tell someone whose 75-layer/300 MB project suddenly got corrupted.

As with all unexplainable Photoshop-problems you might try trashing the prefs (after making sure all customized presets like Actions, Patterns, Brushes etc. have been saved and making a note of the Preferences you’ve changed) by pressing command-alt-shift on starting the program or starting from a new user-account.
System Maintenance (repairing permissions, purging PRAM, running cron-scripts, cleaning caches, etc.) might also be beneficial, Onyx has been recommended for such tasks.
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/system_disk_utilities/onyx.html
Weeding out bad fonts never seems to be a bad idea, either. (Validate your fonts in Font Book and remove the bad ones.)
If 3rd party plug-ins are installed try disabling them to verify if one of those may be responsible for the problem.

  • Photoshop to FCP and Vice Versa

I'm hoping someone knows these sizes already and save me a bunch of time looking it up in various locations.
What should the frame size (640x480, 720x540 ect) settings be in Photoshop if I am creating graphics that will be imported into Final Cut Pro for the following sequence presets:
    1. PS to a FCP DV NTSC 4:3 Preset
    2. PS to a FCP DV NTSC 16:0 Preset
    3. PS to a FCP DV NTSC Anamorphic Preset
    4. PS to HDV Preset
    5. PS to a DVCPro 4:3 Preset
    6. PS to a DVCPRO 50 Preset
If there are any issues I need to be aware of such as saving with constrain porportions or not to or 16-bit vs 32-bit please share.
I really appreciate anyone willing to share their knowledge.
    Best regards,
    mike kroesen

If you're working in any kind of 720x480 format - which includes DV NTC, DVCPro NTSC and DVCPro50 NTSC - then start with a 720x534 canvas. As the last step prior to export to FCP, resize your Photoshop file to 720x480. If you're working in an anamorphic 16:9 variant of any of the above codecs, start with an 864x480 canvas, then resize to 720x480 prior to exporting.
For HDV, start with a 1920x1080 canvas, though resize to 1440x1080 prior to exporting to FCP.
When you're resizing, be sure to uncheck Constrain Proportions before you alter the image size. Keep the Image Mode at 8 bits/channel.

  • Saving .png images from Photoshop for FCP

Is it best to save them as Interlaced or Progressive?
They are for import into Final Cut Pro, then exported as part of a motion menu for use in DVD Studio Pro.
Will one option give better quality over another?
    The project is SD PAL.

One thing that's confusing me is some button boxes I've made up for DVDSP.
They don't look the same thickness in FCP yet they are identical in Photoshop. It's very annoying!
Might be because they are not sitting exactly on a scan line, so a top or bottom edge is getting cut off.
Try moving the suspects up or down slightly.
Do you have a thin, surrounding edge on them? Make it a little bit thicker.
