Photoshop in Rosetta?
I know it runs... but about how bad is it? I'm currently running a Dual 800 G4 system and I'm looking to upgrade to the 20" iMac to hold me off until the new Intel Mac Tower (or whatever they will call it) comes out. The only thing I'm using that isn't Universal is Photoshop. If it will run with Rosetta at least as well as it does with my Dual 800 G4, I'll be happy. Any ideas?
Thanks!!!
Well, on your advice I ran to the Apple store today. Bad news is they didn't have Photoshop installed on any of their Intel based Macs. The "Apple Guy" seemed to think PS would run about the same on the new 20" iMac as it does on my Dual 800 G4. I DID get to spend a good hour messing around with Final Cut Pro editing everything from DV to DVCPRO HD. It was really great. In fact, it convinced me to just go for it and I'll just deal with however PS runs. Besides... I'm not getting rid of the Dual 800, so if worse comes to worse, I can always PS on it.
Thanks for the suggestions!

Working with adobe Photoshop - interface ROSETTA
Merci ! :o)
imac Intel 20" Mac OS X (10.4.8)You are welcome and a Happy New Year to you as well!
I don't read or write French, however, since Spanish and French are both Latin derived languages, I think I understand enough to help some. I write in English so all may understand what is going on, but I use a spelling and grammar checking app!
Rosetta is not a separate software program that you can identify on your new iMac Intel. It is built into the Universal binary version of Mac OS X 10.4 that was developed for the Intel Macs. When you start a PowerPC program OS X should detect that it is PPC and automatically start Rosetta.
I have not had any problems running Adobe CS2 on my iMac Intel. I am not sure how to assist you in solving the issue. The best way to install the CS2 programs is directly from an install disk. Some folks were more successful installing the programs by dragging the installer from the install disk and running the installer from the desktop of their hard drive. Do not install Version Cue. It is incompatible with the Intel Macs. Also make sure that you update the individual programs to the most recent versions available from Adobe after you install them. -
Photoshop cs4 crashing on saving
hi,
My problem
i have a problem with photoshop crashing on me, in particular when saving it also crashes when doing a large task e.g... rendering lighting effects, running a batch web gallery, site-grinder and trying to perform an action.
After past trouble shooting (described below) if i opened photoshop through bridge (bridge open on selected photo double click to open photoshop with photo) can do minor edit, and when trying to save it crashes!! very sad .. i found that if i made sure i opened photoshop first, then open selected photo i could save ... as of late am getting back to original problem of crashing regardless of opening procedure upon trying to save work. sigh .. (i have not added anything new, just the same as before.) at the moment saving is a bit of a hit or miss .. i hold my breath saving!!
i make sure that there is a little as possible of other software open at same time .. generally just mail, fire-fox and bridge.
i let photoshop open fully on own with out any disturbances .. e.g. checking mail or doing anything else on comp at same time .. the same goes for quitting or running anything automative.
I am only having this problem in photoshop.
i have spoken to mac support and they say that they can not help as is only happening in photoshop.
i have run disk utilities and comp all fine.
I have photoshop cs4 extended running on a macbook pro, version 10.4.11.

i run photoshop in rosetta. i have a plugin called Lucis Art that requires this.
i also have a plugin called fluid mask 3
all these are legal copies i have paid for.
i have no additions actions, brushes installed etc .. normal fonts + only a couple of extra's - legal versions (edwardian script, sanvito, country garden) have tested to see if fonts installed are corrupt and don't appear to be.
my past trouble shooting.
i created a whole new user on mac and trashed old user started everything from fresh, with no plugins, tested all when installing, re-setting presets on opening photoshop. there was another along those lines but can't remember.
i hope i have provided you with enough information to help me. i have read somewhere that it could be a scratch disk issue ... not sure but would think this was enough ..
i desperately need to have my programs working and hope someone out there can help me!
PLEEEEEAAAASE :)
DanielleHello,
I'm actually having a similar problem to Danielle's. I googled "Photoshop CS4 Saving Issues," and this was one out of two things that popped up!
I'm editing a wedding with CS4. I just switched to the trial version and am purchasing in about a week or so. Have been having no issues until the past couple of days. I drag a series of JPEG photos from CS4 Bridge into Photoshop. I edit a JPEG photo with some actions (thereby creating layers), hit "Save As" and I hit "JPEG." It automatically wants to save that file as a "copy" but I delete copy because I want it to save over that file.
Typically up pops a box saying "Cancel" or "Replace." About 70% of the time it works, but 30% of the time that box with "Cancel" and "Replace" comes up blank, and I have to force quit Photoshop because it freezes.
I originally thought the problem was my new terabyte hard drive, so I stopped editing on that. Now I'm editing on my actual iMac hard drive (which has 100GB available). But it still keeps happening. Now I'm thinking it
has to be a CS4 issue, but I have no idea what. Could it be the actions I'm using? The number of files I open at once? I can't figure it out. I'm not super computer savvy, so I'm hoping someone can help!
Many thanks in advance,
Lisa -

Any ideas?
and updating is out of the question (no spare cash)
ThanksYou're crashing because you're running Photoshop under Rosetta emulation. Emulation is slow and buggy - and gets buggier with each OS update. You may want to upgrade to CS5 fairly soon. Because you own CS2, you can upgrade at the upgrade price ($199 US). (Adobe gives a price break if you upgrade within 3 versions back - CS2, CS3, & CS4) If you wait for another version to come out, you'd have to pay full price $699 to get the latest version. Just a heads up.

Photoshop/Acrobat will not print black- ?
Hi,
I'm working on a Macbook with Leopard, using CS3. I recently started using a HP Officejet Pro K8600 printer (inkjet, CMYK cartridges). My problem is that when printing out of Photoshop and Acrobat, any black items are outputting as gray- I'm assuming that the printer is creating a composite black out of the color inks instead of using the black ink cartridge. This is not a problem when printing out of Illustrator (blacks look great). Any ideas?
I have tried running Photoshop in Rosetta mode, deleting the Preferences file, and several different print and Photoshop dialogue settings. Photoshop, Acrobat and the printer driver are all updated. I'm running out of options and Adobe technical support had no solution either. Any advice is greatly appreciated!Lundberg02- Please explain.

Installing plugin software - Photoshop says failed
Hello - I got the new iMac and I am trying to transfer software over into the new system. I dug through my drawer of all the stuff I've purchased over the years. I am using Photoshop CS3 with no problems expect for trying to get this software in. I was using the same setup on my old computer and never had this problem. My example, is that I have Auto FX Mystical Tint Tone and Color which has an installer. I run it. It says everything was fine. PS was not on while I did the setup. Found the proper plugin folder - everything seemed great. There are 5 other titles that I did this all with. When I start PS, is says they failed. This also happened when I tried to reinstall my scanner. I have the latest drivers and also tried installing from the original CD. It will not work in PS and it did on my old computer. I have restarted my computer - with no change. Help! What am I doing wrong here?
Here is the list that failed:
Plug-ins that failed to load:

MTTC NO VERSION - OS 9 Plug-In Not Supported - from the file “/Applications/Adobe Photoshop CS3/Plug-Ins/MTTC_PlugIn.8bf”

onOne Library NO VERSION - - from the file “/Applications/Adobe Photoshop CS3/Plug-Ins/onOne Library.8li”
I am really afraid to continue installing all my stuff - if nothing is going to work. I don't want to waste another 2 hours if possible ....If you just got a new Mac its most likely an Intel Mac.
Your old plugins are probably for a PowerPC Mac.
The intel Mac applications need to be written in a different language than PPC.
Your old plugins will work if you start Photoshop in Rosetta (PPC emulation) but you will take a big speed hit. You need to contact the manufacturers of your plugins and see if they make a new version for the Intel Mac. this may cost to get the upgrade. -
Hi;
I have a power mac 2X's 3GHz Quad core Intel-Xeon. I'm using the Adobe Creative Suite 4 using Photo Shop CS4 and I'm trying to scan in images.
(I did the goodies thing ) for the TWAIN plugin but, It doesn't show up when I try to import but it's in the Plug in's folder of PS.
The GREAT minds at Adobe says that I have to use the Rosetta mode. When I go to the "get info" I don't have a check box for Rosetta. Apple says Sometimes, you might have a Universal version of a graphics or Internet application on your Intel processor-based Mac that you want to run via Rosetta instead of running natively. Because some Universal applications may continue to rely on existing plug-ins, you may sometimes need to force a Universal application to run in Rosetta to accommodate the plug-in. Check with your plug-in manufacturer(s) to see if Universal versions are available, too.
Adobe is blaming Apple, Apple is blaming Adobe. In the mean time I can't scan! What should I do???

Actually it is neither Apple or Adobe's fault. You could start Photoshop in Rosetta but you would take a massive performance hit. The problem is the scanner manufacturer have not made their plugin Universal. so the only way to get it to work would be to fire up PS in Rosetta.
But using a $1000 application as a scanner interface is a bit silly. Since you can't do anything in Photoshop while you are scanning. So you should do what savvy Photoshop users have been doing for years now. Use the stand alone software that came with the scanner or buy VueScan or something similar.
Now you can scan and work at the same time. -
Illustrator CS2 Crashes - Have removed all fonts - still crashing on open
Greetings,
I use Illustrator occasionally and cannot afford to buy al new right now. Plus I am afraid it might not solve the problem if old stuff is still on my computer.
I guess I could reinstall everything but please see below to see what I have done, perhaps I am missing something.
I am on an iMac with OS X 10.6.6
Illustrator stalls when reading fonts on open.
I downloaded mutliple fonts recently (no not the Zebra one) not realizing it could crash my Illustrator. I also downloaded a few brushes for photoshop and patterns. I work on a Mac and even used my timeline to restore to before the date in question.
Have read as many forums posts as I can, tried multiple ideas:
Removed all fonts in user/library/fonts and macintosh/library/fonts
Have disabled half the fonts, all the fonts, have deleted the ones I know I downloaded the other day when this happened.
Deleted original Illustrstor and reinstalled it. (have not tried deleting all of CS 2 yet)
Removed adobe plist files.
Removed Work Flow file
used my back up files to exaclty match font lists before the crash.
Photoshop is working fine. Thank you for any and all help.
Sheree

I am really hating Apple right now. Where is my Time Machine backup?
OK, kinda a long story. Pardon the ranting, but if feels like everything is going wrong and I'm getting pretty tired of it.
I was going along nicely with my Mac. Then I had a time-sensitive iMovie project that was going totallly screwy. I ended up buying Lion hoping that would fix the problem. It didn't spent several more hours trolling forums and figured out it was a weird problem with the software.
So... then I was stuck with Lion. Photoshop, Dreamweaver, Rosetta Stone, etc. don't work on it. Not cool. Would have been nice if I was warned before doing this. So, I figured I'd go back in my Time Machine backup. However, I was really busy and didn't get to it until a few weeks later. I'd never actually used Time Machine, but when I went into it I was astonished to find that it backed up on the hour, filling up the external hard drive so it only kept backups for a few weeks. And of course, it was too late to backup to my old OS. So not cool. Who in the world needs an hourly backup??? I'd much prefer a weekly backup a little further back. That's just absurd.
So, anyway, I had the old Time Machine backup. I figured if I messed up, I could always restore to the recent Lion backup. So, I restored to Snow Leopard from the disk, wiping the hard drive. Then, I tried to go in and get my files off of the external hard drive/Time Machine backup. It didn't recognize I even had an external hard drive plugged in.
So... I decided to go back to Lion, maybe I needed to be in Lion to access the Lion backup. Spent hours putting Lion back on. And... still doesn't even recognize that there's an external hard drive plugged in. What gives?
I've been trying to think of what all could be the problem here. Did I just think I was backing up to the external hard drive this whole time, when really I was backing up to the computer? No, because it would send me reminders when the external hard drive wasn't plugged in. Is the cord or something broken to the external hard drive? I suppose it's possible, but just a few hours before I saw the Time Machine backups... And there is power to it.
Please help! I don't know how all my data was lost!OK, solved my own problem, but am posting here in case someone else has the same problem. It totally does not make sense, especially considering that it stopped after I reinstalled Lion, but the good thing is I have my files back.
I scoured the web and found a lot of other people are having the same problem. Most of them didn't have a clue how to fix it. This discussion was the most helpful to me: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2569766?start=30&tstart=90
So, I went to the WD page and followed the instructions. The first suggestion was to plug it directly into a wall, because it may not be getting enough power from a power cord. I did this and it fixed the problem. Who would have guessed?
Anyway, if anyone else is having this problem, go to your manufacturer's website for help. Here's WD's help: http://wdc.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/1164/related/1/session/L2F2LzEvd GltZS8xMzI2MzIzMjUwL3NpZC82dmo0blZOaw%3D%3D -
Using time machine as backup AND external hard drive?
So I got the Time Machine so I could use it as a wireless external hard drive. Thought my computer just crashed and realized i realllly need a backup.... is there any way that I could back up my computer on it WITHOUT erasing my 100,000's of photos on the time capsule? Please be POSITIVE they wont erase.
Thanks

Sorry - forgot about this question.
My hard drive is about full. Its full of photoshop and rosetta stone stuff and I just would rather not loose it all if my computer were to crash (think 140GB).
As posted earlier, your best bet for that is a larger internal HD.
I just want one backup, maybe one that automatically backs itself up ever month/week and REPLACES the old one. Not looking for the time machine to work as it normally does, saving every backup it can. Looking to use the time CAPSULE as a backup, to save one copy at a time. Although not necessary, it would be nice to have it automatically REPLACE that ONE copy.
If you're going to have a backup of your system, you might as well use Time Machine. It's most recent backup is, in effect, a full backup of everything. If you let it do it's hourly backups, you'll never lose more than an hour of data.
You might want to review these:

Yes, there are other backup apps; many won't back up to a network drive (such as a Time Capsule).

10.4.8 and RAIDs. How are things working for MacPro people??
So, pondering is things working well/at all for people with 10.4.8 and have RAID boot systems in MacPro?
Anyone installed it with you having Raid 10, or 0 or 1 ?
What kind of problems did you install?
Intrested to install the 10.4.8 to my work computer since the performace gains it apparently gets running photoshop under rosetta.
A extra 30% of performance would be nice...
So,if anyone has firsthand info (or even rumors), please let me know.
Last thing i want is to **** up my disks...
thx..Sorry hatter. Tried to allready search for stuff from, but i didnt find anything conclusive..
Care to referate? Yay or Nay?
What was the main issues?

Graphic Design and Adobe Products
I am a graphic design student, graduating in about a year. I maxxed out my MBP's ram and bought my first mac in hopes that it would be a great tool for graphics. I see that photoshop and illustrator (adobe tools) are running through rosetta and haven't yet (or will be?) been ported.
My question is this, will this machine be the right tool for graphics work? Im pretty concerned about this and really didn't think twice about it when i ordered - i figured adobe products would work flawlessly, as they always have.
any ideas? (ie, try to make me feel somewhat better?)Word on the street is that Photoshop under Rosetta is useable, but a tad slow for really heavy work. Not great news, but that an application like Photoshop works acceptably on a completely different processor than what it was written for is a minor miracle. The only real way to know for sure that it will meet your needs is to give it a go.
The good news is:
- you made the right choice in maxing out the RAM
- Rosetta apparently gets quicker with age due to caching
- If the MBP sells well, Adobe is likely to bring forward a universal version of PS (send them feedback to let them know that you are interested in a universal version)
If you do find that PS performance is not acceptable you have a few (not great) options:
- return the MBP for a PB G4 or G5 iMac/Powermac (you will get better performance from PPC native versions of PS, but performance is not likely to be as good as the MBP when a universal version of PS is released and the MBP is likely to be a better long term investment)
- try the new universal binary version of GIMP
Other more experimental options to try if you get desperate:
- try running older windows versions of PS (I think v 5 works) under Darwine
- try running more current Windows versions on a virtual PC (only current (and messy) option is to boot into Linux and use VMWare, but I expect there will be other options before we see a universal PS: intel version of iEmulator is apparently due out shortly and I suspect that a VMWare for OSX intel won't be too far off) -
Since I have been using Adobe CS2 on my Mac Pro, I have been having alot of crashes especially Indesign. Anyone else had problems and know of a way to fix it? I have updated all my software.
Grant,
I've installed Windows XP Pro to run Photoshop CS2, Vue5 Infinite, and a number of other programs which have yet to be rewritten for Intel Macs as well as numerous Windows only apps. While it is true that Photoshop runs at a native speed on Windows, it runs just fine under Rosetta for me. I suspect it depends on the file sizes one works with and what your expectations are. Coming from an older G4, Photoshop with Rosetta is much faster than my old computer. Typically I work on 100 - 300mb images.
The original inquiry was about crashing issues and Version Cue is a real culprit and known issue as is running Photoshop and Illustrator concurrently. As I'll run just one at a time because of that issue and all my Adobe licenses are for specific apps rather than the suites so Version Cue was never an issue, I've not had a Adobe crash yet.

Aperture image to external editor is SLOW
Wondering if anyone else is having an issue with opening their images up using their "external editor" option in Aperture.
Mine is set to Photoshop, which I'm sure many of you have. But it takes upwards of a minute for the Aperture image to duplicate itself and then open up in PS. It triples the time of my workflow -- which is a pain when I need to edit dozens of images in PS.
Anyone have any suggestions? My computer is brand-new and quite fast. But perhaps there's a logical answer that I have yet to discover.
Thanks. How much RAM do you have? You'll want 2 GB to do what you want.
There are a few things going on here:
1) Photoshop is a large application... it takes a while to load on any hardware
2) Photoshop is not yet a universal application. It runs in Rosetta, which is an emulation layer. This makes it slower (probably 2-3x slower than on a PowerPC; so your MacBook running Photoshop at current is probably about as fast as an 800 MHz PowerBook).
3) Rosetta uses lots of RAM as well. So Photoshop in Rosetta while you're using Aperture will really tax the machine.
I'd recommend you run nothing else on the machine at all but Aperture and Photoshop. Quit mail, quit safari, quit anything but those two applications. Your life will get better when Photoshop CS3 comes out (March/April) and is universal. Until then, yeah, it's going to be a little on the slow side. -
