Photoshop/iPhoto

Hi, hope someone can help me.
I'm new to photoshop cs3. When I work in PS and want to save a picture as a psd or jpeg (in the same folder as I originally did open it in) I' not able to see it in iPhoto.
When I want to open a picture again in Ps (that have been modified in PS), I can see the picture is in the right folder in iPhoto but doesn´t show up in iPhoto?
Do I need to save it as something else?
I really would appreciate help!
Natascha/DK

Natascha:
In case you do edits that has Photoshop changing the format to its psd extension see below:
Using Photoshop (or Photoshop Elements) as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
1 - select Photoshop as your editor of choice in iPhoto's General Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.
2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop. When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.
3 - however, if you get the navigation window that indicates that PS wants to save it as a PS formatted file. You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.
This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
If you want to use both iPhoto's editing mode and PS without having to go back and forth to the Preference pane, once you've selected PS as your editor of choice, reset the Preferences back to "Open in main window". That will let you either edit in iPhoto (double click on the thumbnail) or in PS (Control-click on the thumbnail and seledt "Edit in external editor" in the Contextual menu). This way you get the best of both worlds
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • When I want to edit a photo in photoshop, iphoto duplicates the image and I end up with two or three copies of the same photo and they are also duplicated on my computer.  This has only occurred since I installed iPhoto 11.

Ever since I installed iPhoto '11 on my computer, I have had a problem with images being duplicated when I want to open an image to edit in Photoshop.  I did not realize at first that the images were also duplicated on my computer.  This has taken up an incredible amount of space on my computer.  Why does this happen?  Is there a problem with the software?  Can I remove iPhoto and re-install?  Would that help?

saUnless you have a copy of your iPhoto 09 library you will have to start over from scratch with a new library and import the Masters file from inside iPhoto 11's library as described here:
Start over from scratch with new library
Start over with a new library and import the Originals (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from your original library as follows:
    1.  Move the existing library folder to the desktop.
    2. Open the library package like this.
    3. Launch iPhoto and, when asked, select the option to create a new library.
    4. Drag the Origianls (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from the iPhoto Library on the desktop into the open iPhoto window.
This will create a new library with the same Events as the original library but will not keep the metadata, albums, books slideshows and other projects.

Helpful hint...Go to your preferences in iPhoto and I think under the "general" preference tab, you can tell iPhoto which application you want to edit photos in.
I selected Photoshop, since we merely use iPhoto to store pictures somewhere. iPhoto 6 disabled the "old" method of dragging the thumbnail from iphoto onto the desktop or photoshop icon on the dock. However, this new method allows you to doubleclick the image in the iphoto screen and it will automatically launch Photoshop. No dragging or dropping necessary. It took us a good 15 mins to figure out though.
We just purchased this machine last night...we are still testing at this point; we 're going to be using Rosetta a fair amount, mostly for photoshop and illustrator (possibly freehand...don't ask). I won't even bother trying video editing on the machine until Final Cut Studio is released in binary mode. A few speed chokes when launching photoshop and the FrontRow did respond slowly, but in either case it's still going faster than the eMac 1GB/1.0 ghz machine we had in its place. Just can't wait till most the design applications come up to speed with the Universal thing.

I'm sorry to hear of your grief with the printer, and I'm afraid I have no fix for it. However, you might consider trying Portraits and Prints as a workaround.
It's a handy app with more printing options than iPhoto, including placing more than one pic ona page etc., and it may not have the problems that iPhoto does with the Printer.
You can drag and drop photos from iPhoto to P&P (where it will make copies, you can trash the copies after if you wish) so it might make that part easier.
You can download an copy of P&P from here

Finally, if you find no luck here, you could try post your issue on http://www.macintouch.com

  • Photoshop/Iphoto problem

Photoshop is not offered in the Preferences--Advanced--Edit menu. I have Photoshop Elements11 running on my MAcBook Air.  What's up?

There should be two options in that menu: iPhoto and External Editor or an existing external editor. Select External Editor or whatever is the second option and to navigate to the Applications folder and select PSE 11 as shown in this screenshot:
Otherwise you'll open the overall Elements applicaiton which then you have to tell it to open the editor, a big pain.
Using Photoshop or Photoshop Elements as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
1 - select Photoshop or Photoshop Elememts as your editor of choice in iPhoto's General Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.
2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop.  When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.

This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
NOTE: With Photoshop Elements  the Saving File preferences should be configured as shown:
I also suggest the Maximize PSD File Compatabilty be set to Always.  In PSE’s General preference pane set the Color Picker to Apple as shown:
Note:  to switch between iPhoto and PS or PSE as the editor of choice Control (right)-click on the thumbnail and select either Edit in iPhoto or Edit in External Editor from the contextual menu. If you use iPhoto to edit more than PSE re-select iPhoto in the iPhoto General preference pane. Then iPhoto will be the default editor and you can use the contextual menu to select PSE for your editor when desired.

  • IPhoto crashes when I edit with Photoshop!

Whenever I edit an iPhoto photo using Photoshop, iPhoto crashes when I try to import it back into iPhoto. This happens whether I export the photo, Photoshop it, and re-import it, or whether I use iPhoto Preferences to select Photoshop as my editor. I can import other photos into iPhoto, just not photos that have been edited with Photoshop. Help would be much appreciated!

  • RAW from iPhoto to photoshop

I can import Raw photos to iPhoto but when I move them to Photoshop they appear as JPG, anyone know why and how I can fix it?

If you set your Preferences in iPhoto to edit in Photoshop, the file will open with Adobe Raw, where you can adjust your settings before opening the file in Photoshop.

  • Epson Artisan 810 and Snow Leopard and Photoshop....Print quality??

I'm a little lost to be honest. I'm not sure where my problem is...Photoshop, Epson, or Snow Leopard
I'm using Photoshop CS4 to edit my photos. I've constrained my cropping to designated print sizes, thus pixelation changes as well.
For example to create an 8x10 from a jpeg file uploaded to my computer from my camera (a sony cybershot dsc-w170 if you need to know, which by default upload files as jpegs), here is the following image info:
    3000 pixels x 2400 pixels
    25.4 cm x 20.32 cm
    with a resolution of 300 pixels/inch
I have the resolution set to BEST and when I print I've tried both document and proof quality (with printer color managment)
I'm using photo paper, gloss, but not Epson brand paper (don't know how much that might be contributing to the problem, if at all).
When I go to print my image the quality off the Epson is HORRIBLE.
Is there something I'm missing or doing wrong?? How do I get better print quality?
There is no option/method of changing the print type (document or photo) on the printer itself, which is obviously made to work best with a PC. So that leaves me with Photoshops options as far as I know.
Although I don't know if there's a way to change default print quality settings within Snow Leopard, or if I even have to.
Whatever the case may be...ultimately I need to know the following:
    paper brand/quality matters?
what program should I be trying to print photos from (photoshop, iphoto, whatever)
how to manipulate the photo quality within whichever program I should be using
and anything else important that I may not have thought of
Thanks so much. I've seen great reviews of photo print quality for this printer, so I have hope that this problem can be remedied....?

Your printer is supported by the latest update supplied by Apple.
Cheap paper usually results in cheap looking results.
I'm using HP paper with a HP printer with a Canon Eos Rebel camera that outputs
    something like 2592 x 1944.
CS4 handels these .jpgs quite fine.
I would first buy some premium Epson paper and see what happens.

  • Trouble importing JPEGs saved in Photoshop.

Here's a brief description of my workflow: I shoot Canon EOS 350D, import RAW files into Lightroom, correct them there, then edit some pictures in Photoshop, save as JPEGs and when all's ready, import the shoot into iPhoto because I prefer to keep the images there.
But I'm frequently having troubles with the JPEGs saved in Photoshop: iPhoto gives me an error that the files were in corrupt format and could not be imported. However, I can open em up in Preview just fine. So I have to re-import them into Lightroom and export them again from there. This time the images get sucked into iPhoto just fine. Any ideas what might be causing this? And what is the solution?

  • Memory on new iMac 3.5GHz I7

I just ordered a new iMac 3.5GHz I7 with 1TB SSD and 8GB of memory.  I have two 4GB iMac memory pulls that someone gave me when they went to 32GB on their new iMac.
My question is what would 32GB over 16GB on this mac with OEM 1TB buy me in performance increase.  I am thinking not much...
    Would appreciate any comments.

The memory is Apple1600MHz DDR3 SDRAM 2x4GB so I don't expect any problems.  He bought new in ~July 2014.

  • Please help me move pictures freely, and get a logical navigation menu

I am a serious newbie to iWeb. As best I can tell, I'm in iWeb 1.1.1 (so what's that? '08, '09?) I'm in OS 10.5.7 if that helps. No recent iLife. Since attempting iWeb, I have been reading and trying my best to follow the tutorial but I'm impatient because I'm not a newbie in other related areas (like graphic design, video, photoshop, iPhoto, etc.), and get frustrated with what seem like simple tasks. I'm not trying to do anything fancy. But I am getting all tripped up with two things. 1) I can't get rid of the grids or the photos in the templates unless I drop my own photos into them. Once I do, I cannot move them around freely. I added a gif animation (it took it as a QT movie and after publishing played it as a animated gif, which was great) but the one or two pictures I have next to it I simply cannot do anything with except move within the right angles of the blue grid from the template that is still there. I tried the different frame styles but none of them do anything different. I am looking for something that allows me freeform movement of the photos I am dragging in. Too much to ask? And to get rid of the grids, or at least not be bound by their definitions. I'd rather not use them at all but didn't see an option for that.
    2) How do I change the page that has accidentally become my navigation menu. Before I understood this, I apparently created a page that is now my navigation menu. I want to get rid of that page altogether. But it has a star in front of it. None of the others do. Can I just create something called "Navigation Menu" and let it be just that. And build my sites and pages under that?
    Thanks for patience and help.

You should post in the forum for iWeb 1, iWeb (Previous to iWeb '08) which will have users who are more familiar with the older version.

  • Macbook Pro 17" early 2011 Discrete GPU failure

Hi, before I start, this is the serial of my MBP so you can identify the exact model.
    MBP 17" Core i7 2.2 Ghz serial number C0*******F92
My Macbook pro 17" (early 2011) started to freeze once a month, but then, it started getting worse.  I narrowed down the problem to the discrete GPU graphic engine as I was able to disable the automatic switching and be able to use the system with most of the programs.
I googled around and learned that this problem happens to all early/mid 2011 MBP and iMac models that use AMD 6750M engie (if I recall well).
When the system is on automatic graphic switching mode, whatever app you use that requires the graphic engine switch (VMWare Fusion, Photoshop, iPhoto, etc), causes the system screen to freezes.  The system although unstable, keep working as I am able to log into the system via SSH.  Trying to reboot via shell (sudo reboot) won't work as there is some frozen process preventing it, but system is alive.
You have to power cycle the MBP between 2 and 6 times to be able to get it to boot as most of them time it freezes during the boot process.
I want to know if there is an apple warranty to this problem ( I don't have apple care on this machine).  If not, what will be the cost of the logic board replacement and how is the procedure to get it done.  I live outside of the US and can send the machine if needed.
    Thanks in advance.

  • The MacBook Pro will not allow me to cut-and-paste to and from or to click-and-drag to the external drive. I can copy-and-paste, but then I must send the original to the trash, which doubles the time and effort. Is there any way to cut-and-paste?

I have recently switched from a PC to a MacBook Pro.
I have a large number of documents and photographs on a multiterrabite external drive, backed up on a second multiterrabite external drive.
Both external drives are formatted for MacIntosh. This has been verified by agents at an Apple store and also at Best Buy in two different cities.
    This is the problem:
The MacBook Pro will not allow me to cut-and-paste to and from or to click-and-drag to the external drive. I can copy-and-paste, but then I must send the original to the trash, which doubles the time and effort. Is there any way to cut-and-paste?

No, this is a philosophical difference between Apple and Microsoft. Apple believes that it's dangerous to cut a file in case the user never pastes it; in that case the file is lost. Microsoft seems to not have this problem (if I remember Windows correctly) because they don't delete the originating file if it's cut but never pasted.
Even though Macs have a lot of keyboard shortcuts, philosophically Macs have traditionally been mouse-first. This applies to file copy operations. In your case, what a Mac user would do is open the source window, open the destination window (on your second drive), and then Command-drag the selected files from the source to destination window. This is because a normal drag would leave the originals behind, while adding the Command modifier key tells OS X that this is a Move, not a Copy, so don't leave the originals behind.
(In addition there are different rules for drag-copying within the same volume or between different volumes. If you drag between two folders on the same volume, the files are moved. If you drag between different volumes, the files are copied unless you hold down Command to delete the copies on the source volume.)

Two problems in this case. First, batch file renaming is not built into OS X unless you build something with Automator. However, there are many utilities that can do batch file renaming which you can find at macupdate.com or on the App Store. Since I work with media I often batch rename using one of the media managers I have lying around like Media Pro or Adobe Bridge (comes with Photoshop).
iPhoto is a database front end designed to shield the file system from the consumer and let them concentrate on creativity and sharing. As such it is often a poor choice for managing files directly. When you "transferred the photographs" chances are you moved the originals, not the ones iPhoto edited which are stored in a hidden folder.

There will not be a way to do it exactly like Windows. As described above, there are ways to do it "the Mac way." If it is possible to remove judgment on which way is "better" you might find the Mac way to be acceptable, but of course sometimes we simply prefer what we're used to.
