Photoshop is auto correcting contrast... on its own.

Hello all,  I'm simply trying to increase the contrast of a black and white image so the whites are really hot and the blacks are really black. (I've done this many times before.) But now, no matter how I try to do this, (ie. levels, channel mixer, etc.) after I've adjusted it how I want it and click OK, the image auto adjusts to a lesser contrast then what I just set. It's acting like there is a limiter on how white and how black the image can be.  If I use a color image, everything works fine. Any thought or input would be great.
Thanks, John
p.s. I'm using CS3

Make sure you are viewing your file at 100% as that is the most accurate representation on screen. Also, is it a greyscale image you are trying to adjust, and are there really different grey values in it or is it already a black and white image that only contains pure black and pure white?

  • Dv9933 auto shut down on its own

my dv9933 laptop is about 15 months old. it worked fine until yesterday. Nothing changed configuration wise, the machine started to shut down on its own. I turned it on, it shuts down in 5 to 10 minutes. Sometimes it even shuts down during windows loading stage. The machine is not hot so i don't think it's a over heat issue.
I had an issue before and don't know if it was related to this one. The machine used to start up on its own. I don't usually shut down the machine and used to put it into sleep mode.  But sometimes it just starts up by itself. This is not a too serious problem but now, i cannot even get the machine start and running. it just keeps shutting down..... any suggestions is appreciated.
    Thanks.

  • Lightroom 5 - processing 1,000 photos - how to auto correct each photos with its own analysis?

I want to edit 1,000 individual photos. The photos were taken at different times, different light, etc. I would like to find a way to auto process all 1,000 photos SO THAT EACH PHOTO RECEIVES ITS OWN UNIQUE ANALYSIS AND ADJUSTMENTS.  Can this her done? How? Bob

Switch to the Library module, select your images in the viewer, and use Quick Develop > Tone Control > Auto Tone.
To apply Auto White Balance, use Quick Develop > White Balance, and select “Auto” from the popup menu.

  • Photoshop autoloads on its own (CS3)

    Hi,
    I
Our Office just upgraded to CS3 and now Photoshop auto-loads on its own at random intervals. I have closed it 4 times in the past 97 mins. There is nothing blocking or engaging the start/scan button on the scanner (this will load PS if its not already open).
system specs (in case someone asks)
    XP home
    4gbs of ram
    amd quad core 9850
    Nvidia GeForce 8800 GTX
    Soundblaster audio
    22" LCD monitor.
CS3 has been installed almost 1 month with no issues. This just started this morning at 7am. I didn't turn off my pc last night due to a large file I was exporting from FLEXI to a EPS, only Illustrator was running. All other programs were closed. When I came in and checked on it, photoshop had opened. I closed it thinking ok, maybe i left it running (not likely, but maybe). Immediately after closing it, it reopened. I closed it again, and about 35 mins later it reopened on its own while I was reading my mail.. In fact while posting this message, it opened on me and changed the screeen to PS.
Any ideas whats causing this and or what I can do to resolve it? I do not want to install this all over. That installation took all day.
I was told to look at my file extensions and see what else is maybe forcing PS to start up however an interesting theory, but on a cold boot. within a few seconds, photoshop starts up. after start up. and mouse reverts back to a pointer, i close photoshop and it reopens.
i'd like to be able to write a script that prints a message telling me what process started PS when such and such process initiated. or when such and such ran, it initiated PS also.
its something running in the background. at first i suspected another program but after a cold boot, it starts up.
and now to make matters worse, if after PS starts, and i do nothing to it ( i.e. close it or switch to it), no matter what I am looking at on the monitor, after several minutes PS "refreshes and switches to PS window - FORCES itself to be viewed)
In the middle of typing this, PS refreshed itself and swapped to the PS window on its own...this is too annoying.
please HELP. its driving me slowly insane. I never had this issue with PS2

I would first look at acrobat properties to see if anything is checked to autostart something. I don't own acrobat so you may want to check in with the acrobat forums.
    http://forums.adobe.com/community/acrobat
Also look in Windows Task Scheduler and see if anything Adobewise is listed and if it is set to load when something else starts. I don't know if Acrobat is listed in Task Scheduler or not.

This is a known issue with the iPhone 5. Turn off the automatic time setting for the time being. It will most likely be corrected in an upcoming update to iOS if the tech press is to be believed.

Sorry, but I find Corey Barker speaks much, much too fast to follow adequately.  Also, why are we looking at his face?  At one point he is saying "if you go to the preferences...", etc, but it is never clear where he means as the camera is on him instead of the screen.

  • Photoshop CS6 "Auto-blend Layers" leaves non-editable artifacts.

In Photoshop CS6, I created two TIFF files each having a different focus on the same subject. The intent is to create a single file using focus stacking with all subject elements in focus. The methods used to import the files as layers and align the layers do not create any artifacts.
The "Auto-blend Layer" function, however, creates permanent artifacts on the layers when creating the masks. The function creates masks for each layer based on its own logic for determining what is best focus. The analysis is fairly good where high contrast exists however it is not 100 percent accurate and is fairly inaccurate in low to medium contrast images. In trying to edit the masks and even when you disable or delete the masks artifacts are left along the margins of the masks on the layer itself. This is a bug. No matter what occurs with the mask the underlying layer should be inviolate - at no time should the underlying layer be affected by a mask until the mask is applied. When the masks are disabled or deleted the remaining layer should not display any evidence of the borders of the mask. (Photoshop 13.0.0 64x Extended; color space= ProPhoto RGB; 32bit TIFF files; 16bit PSD)

  • What happened to Auto-Correct in the iOS 7 update & can it be fixed?

I am sooo frustrated & I can't take it anymore!!!
My keyboard has essentially taken on a mind of it's own since I did the iOS 7 update. And by the 'coded' messages I receive from family & friends, followed by "#%*+ed Auto-Correct!!!" I know I'm not the only one!
I find it changes words that are spelled correctly & are grammatically sound into something different. It doesn't know what an apostrophe is anymore. It has no sense of humor 'cause it can't figure out how to lol without capitalizing or turning it into something else. (My sister Quoll'ed at me earlier!)
What's goin' on & how can I get it back to the only sorta-sucky, but mostly funny stuff it did in iOS 6?
    Thanks.

I've observed this too and have written to Apple feedback. Suggest everyone else do so as well.
What's happening is they've attempted to implement an autocorrect system that doesn't just look at the current word but the current word and the previous word. In theory that's a great idea, as sometimes the correct spelling will be dependent on context. Mostly, though, its effects are too aggressive and I find I'm ending up with many more errors than under iOS 6 (and I'm fairly accurate on the iP*).
The thing I specifically complained out – since it makes no sense at all – is the way iOS 7 autocorrect seems to hate commas!
If I type a phrase like "the line, therefore" iOS 7 will attempt to turn "line," into some a word without punctuation, e.g. "lines" or "lined". Only after I've typed "therefore" will it offer me the possibility of returning to what I actually typed ("line,"). And if I'm in a rush and don't tap the [x] on the proposed "correction" in time then I'm stuck with it and have to go back and manually edit. (Or I don't notice and end up sending someone a complete nonsense of a sentence.)
This kind of autocorrect is completely nuts. Especially on the iPhone, where you have to go to a different screen of the keyboard to type a comma, so you're hardly going to do it by accident! And on the iPad the corrections almost never involve adding letters that are physically close to the comma key on the keyboard, so again, you're hardly going to hit the comma key by accident if you want, for example, "lines".
My recommendation to Apple was that auto-correct should always respect all punctuation. (Or there should be a setting we switch on for "respect punctuation".)
And that autocorrect should focus on trying to correct the kinds of "real" errors that are made by tapping on adjacent keys instead of aggressively trying to predict what we're about to say and actually changing our words.
In the meantime, I've set up a custom shortcut [,,] which resolves to [, ] – basically on the same principle as two spaces resolving to a period. When I remember to use it, it mostly works quite well at giving me commas that stay stuck.

  • Brush tool choosing its own opacity...

I'm not new to elements, and this has happened to me before, but it still stumps me, and I don't know how I corrected it.  Suddenly my brush tool is acting as though I have it set at about 75% opacity, and I can find no adjustments to make to correct this. If I make enough passes over an area, I can color it in, but WHY is it doing this, and how do I fix it?

Thank you so much.  You were right on the mark!!

Subject: Brush tool choosing its own opacity...
You might have used the shortcut to set brush flow.
With the brush tool selected, press shift key + keyboard 0 (zero) to set brush flow setting to 100%. (Note: I specified the keyboard 0 not the numeric keypad 0).
Elements doesn't display the brush flow setting in the options bar but the brush flow setting can be called up using the Photoshop shortcut. The flow setting is sticky and sticks between brushes and even between sessions.
    See this video:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JkAeKmJVPPU
If this does not correct the issue, reset the brush tool.
If a reset of the brush tool doesn't correct the issue, reset the Photoshop Elements preference file.

  • Aperture library seems to grow on its own

I imported a large number of photos into the Aperture library from an external drive I used to back them up from my PC. I decided to do this instead of referencing them from the external drive. It was about 85G worth of data. When I was done it seemed in Finder that it took up approximately the same space - which made sense. On import Aperture chose its own collection of folders and projects - which is OK - but now that I am reorganizing the library seems to be growing even though I believe I am moving files - not copying them. It was a date structure because that is how it was in windows and I am breaking away from that so there are folders for years, but in each I am making projects for events or subject (then adding projects and folders in those as needed) - by moving them out of their original month project/folder. So I have a folder 2010 and if I highlight it I can see all of my photos from 2010. Under 2010 are projects and if I highlight them, the appropriate photos are shown. I assumed this was correct, but I now believe I have duplicates of all or most photos as when I look in finder properties my Aperture library is now 138.45 GB.
Any ideas on what I might have done? Any ideas how to correct this? I cannot see the photo files in finder as I could in Explorer on the PC, so I do not know which files may be duplicates or how to correct this.
    Thanks -

Assuming you have the back up drive still full of the images, you can simply create a new library by depressing the 'Option' key while launching Aperture > Create New.. button. This would allow you to start over.
You could then import the images and wait a while (this might be a couple of hours depending on the amount of images) for Aperture to build all the previews. Once that is done, you can run the 'Get Info' command on the library package and see what the final size is.
As for moving vs. copying, see this part of the user guide:
    http://documentation.apple.com/en/aperture/usermanual/#chapter=5%26section=14
Aperture uses previews to show you the image data with all current instructions applied to it so you can work with the image. These take up space and result in a larger amount of space because they are in addition to the original files (which are not touched other than to be read by the program to build - or render - the preview you will be working with).
You can control the size of the preview that is built by going to 'Aperture menu > Preferences... > Preview section'. Selecting a resolution size and quality will affect the overall space used by all the previews in Aperture. The default values are: Half Size and Quality = 8. The resolution listed that has an asterisk by it is your monitors resolution (if you have a corresponding monitor size with the list).
Note - I use 1920 x 1920 (my monitor resolution) and Quality = 8, since I can easily change the drives in my machine and therefore space is less of a consideration than say a notebook or iMac.
Deselecting 'New projects automatically generate previews' option in the same section will prevent Aperture from doing so and can keep the size of the library down. You can generate previews manually in the 'Photos > Update Preview (while holding down the 'Option' key ) - turns to 'Generate Preview'.
Thumbnails (which are 1024 x 1024) are always generated and cannot be controlled, but some people are happy to use these for general browsing and just generate a preview when they need it.
Aperture does use space, so you just need to decide how much you want to dedicate to it. The referenced image library scheme keeping the masters on an external drive and the library on the internal drive is used by many to work with space limitations.
Note - you can still view the contents of the Aperture library by Control+Click (right-click) on library package > Show Package Contents command. Beware though, as changing any files in the package can corrupt the library. Just viewing the files in Finder without any changes is okay if you are confident in that type of work on a computer.
Final note - as an example, with a 4 MB JPEG master file in my library, the preview is 733 KB at the settings I use (or about 18% of the original). This means that I could have 5 versions of the same image (plus the original master file) in the library. If I used just OS X and Photoshop, I would only get the original and one copy for the same price in space.

  • How does the track pad auto correct miss spelled words?

How does the Track Pad auto correct miss spelled words, unlike the mouse i can no longer double right click to change the spelling??

    Hey hoopsmiller,
Thanks for the question. If I understand correctly, you want to turn off auto correct in OS X. It looks like you have already done some troubleshooting. I would recommend that you read these articles, they may be helpful in troubleshooting your issue.
Since you have already tried to turn it off for all apps, you can try individually.
OS X Yosemite: Check spelling and grammar
For a specific app: In the app, choose Edit > Spelling and Grammar > Correct Spelling Automatically (it’s off when a checkmark isn’t shown).
Mac OS X 10.6: Checking spelling and grammar
If you don’t see the “Spelling and Grammar” command in the Edit menu, the application doesn’t provide the Mac OS X spell-checking feature. Check the application’s preferences or menus to see if it has its own spelling checker.
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
    Have a good one,
    Mario

  • Spelling auto-correction: any way to customize?

One of my biggest pet peeves with the auto corrector is that it doesn't suggest much more common words when uncommon ones are typed. For example, almost every time I type "come" I accidentally hit the N and type "cone", and when I type "for" I accidentally type "fir." The autocorrector doesn't kick in because they are real words. (Although if I type "ill" it changes it to "I'll" which I'm happy about.) I don't know about other users, but I NEVER want to use the word "fir", and "cone" I would perhaps use on a very rare occasion. But "come" and "for" pretty much several times a day. So can I tell the autocorrector to correct these words for me somehow?

Thanks—actually, though, this is a case where I WANT the iPhone to make a correction that it doesn't want to do on its own. It thinks I mean to use the words "fir" and "cone" and "mow" on a regular basis when in fact I don't think I will ever want to type one of these words on my phone.
