Photoshop is unstable

I am running CS3 on a macpro OS10.6.1 Photoshop has become unstable. When I select the eyedropper tool to sample a color from a document, the color shows up as the foreground color. I then double click on the foreground color to bring up the color picker dialogue box as I wish to add it to my swatches. I click add to swatches. Sometimes the color shows up, sometimes it doesn't. I then click ok to close the dialogue box, but it doesn't close. I then click the red button on the image to close the file. A message  then appears that photoshop has unexpectedly quit and a crash has been generated.
I have tried resetting photoshop to its defaults by pressing the command, option and shift keys when launching photoshop, but the problem immediately reoccurs. I also deleted the adobe photoshop cache and removed stored preferences from the library and ran disk utility from utilities.
I have two users set up on my computer, a main user and another user called test that I use just for troubleshooting whether a problem is caused by a faulty user preference or with the software itself. Photoshop does not crash in the other user when I use the eyedropper tool and save a color as a swatch.
What is going on? Thanks for any help. I have a separate scratch disk for photoshop that has nearly 1000 GBs available so memory is not an issue.

I'd go back to 10.5.8 until Apple fixes all their bugs.

  • When Premier Pro is installed, Lightroom and Photoshop become unstable

I have a  brand-new  HP Z620  workstation. The CPU is a Xeon E5 2690 v2. Current RAM installers 32 gigs. Operating system is Windows 7 professional. I used Lightroom, Photoshop and premiere Pro on the previous system that uses same OS without issue. On the HP Z620with all this software installed and Lightroom open some unusual behavior is observed. When I select an image and then right-click the image and select "edit in Photoshop CS6" Lightroom should stay  where it is but instead jumps from my right hand monitor to my left hand monitor. I uninstalled and reinstalled Lightroom several times even installing previous version but the symptoms didn't change. When I uninstalled and reinstalled Photoshop the symptoms disappeared and normal behavior is observed. Somehow during the Photoshop uninstall premiere Pro was also installed and when I reinstalled it the abnormal behavior described above has returned.
The graphics card  is an Nvidia Quadro K 4000. I have e-mailed Nvidia tech support about 15 times and they have made a number of suggestions. None of the suggestions improve the situation and they finally have told me that there card cannot be the cause of this weird software behavior.
I have tried swapping monitor cables on the video card with no success.
I have other plug-ins for Lightroom from NIK and OnOne that do not cause this unusual behavior.
thanks for your time and please help,

  • Woeful state of font management on windows

anyone out there who has font managment software that
    autoactivates in indesign at least
doesn't make your system slow or unstable even with 5000 fonts.
doesn't slow down opening of documents
I've now tried font agent pro (no auto activation in cs6), really crap support, auto activation made photoshop cs5 unstable, failed to activate type 1 fonts in x64 adobe software, clunky
Type DNA manager (no official support for windows 8, no autoactivation, slow, no support?)
Extensis suitcase fusion 4 (delays photoshop docs opening by 25 seconds, delays photoshop opening by 15 seconds, clashes with other software, buggy, crap support).
I'm just about to try maintype, but notice on their support forum issues that havn't been answered for over a month.
    Really this is pathetic

FYI for anyone who stumbles on this thread.  Maintype font activation does not work with indesign CC and may not ever.
    http://forum.high-logic.com/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=4214
which means that the only windows 8 solution for font activation is suitcase.
If anyone knows different, post here!
EDIT: me, I know different! - Apparently this one offers autoactivation, I'm trialing it now

Photoshop becomes unstable, or various other problems occur, including:
When you open Photoshop, it crashes immediately.
Some features close before you can use them.
Photoshop crashes while you are painting, using Blur filters, or using other features.
    Photoshop slows considerably.

Download and install the beta version of the AMD Catalyst 12.6 Beta Driver.
Please refer to this AMD TechNote for information and download locations:

      Solution 2
If you updated the AMD ATI Radeon Catalyst Display Driver to version 12.4, revert to version 12.3.
Version 12.4 of Catalyst Display Driver from AMD can cause problems with Photoshop. AMD is working on this issue. Use Window's Control Panel to uninstall Catalyst 12.4. Then install Catalyst 12.3 from the following links:
      Windows 7/Vista 32 bit: http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/windows/previous/Pages/radeonaiw_vista32.aspx
      Windows 7/Vista 64 bit: http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/windows/previous/Pages/radeonaiw_vista64.aspx
      Windows XP/32 bit:    http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/windows/previous/Pages/radeonaiw_xp.aspx

After reporting a problem to AMD against the Catalyst 12.8 driver, where it caused Photoshop crashes, I got this response.  Perhaps it can help you.  Personally I don't believe in "cleaner" or "sweeper" programs, but this is what they said, verbatim:
This could be the result of corrupted drivers in which case there are steps below to thoroughly clean out your system and reinstall the drivers.
You may also need to try reinstalling CS6 if the driver reinstall does not resolve the issue.
Beyond this there are other things that can impact the performance of such apps and graphics drivers such as BIOS updates, chipset drivers and among other things sometimes an OS reinstall will be the last step that fixes things.
If you require further support on this issue please be sure to complete step 10 so that we will have all of the information about your PC that we need.
    1. Uninstall all ATI drivers and any other video card software from the Add or Remove Programs and Features in the Windows Control Panel. Click on AMD Catalyst install manager, click change and then choose the option to express remove all AMD software.
    2. Try using a driver cleaner program to make sure the drivers are removed: Please keep in mind that the (Driver Cleaner / Driver Sweeper are 3rd party software and not supported by AMD) please refer to their websites for instruction and guidance.
    Driver Cleaner Professional
    http://www.afterdawn.com/software/desktop_software/other_tools/driver_cleaner_pro.cfm
    3. Disable any running background software such as firewalls and antivirus.
    4. Make sure your operating System has the latest Service Packs and patches / updates.
    5. Make sure your motherboard has the latest BIOS and CHIPSET software (you can get these updates directly from the manufacturer of the motherboard or Computer).
    6. Make sure your power supply has adequate wattage.
    7. Since you have a desktop Radeon HD graphics card in windows then install this driver: http://sites.amd.com/us/game/downloads/Pages/radeon_win7-64.aspx
    8. If the problem still exists please try installing your video card in another PC or try installing another video card in your PC if possible, this will tell us if the issue follows the graphics card or the PC.
    9. Or test your other hardware like RAM, CPU , USB devices…etc to make sure they do not create the problem.
    10. If the problem still exists please download the Belarc Advisor - a free system diagnostics, system information and benchmarking to create a problem report as described: In HTML format and attach file to e-mail.
    http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html
Download the ‘Belarc Advisor’ from the ‘Products’ tab at the top of the page.
    11. If you are looking for a specific driver, a list of previous drivers can be found here:
    64-Bit: http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/windows/previous/Pages/radeonaiw_vista64.aspx
    32-Bit: http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/windows/previous/Pages/radeonaiw_vista32.aspx
I ended up fully uninstalling the prior Catalyst software, and scouring my system for remnants myself (rather than relying on a program).  Once I completed that and reinstalled 12.8 I was able to use Photoshop quite effectively, though occasionally I still see crashes in the ATI driver, so I have high hopes for their next release.
    Hope this helps!

After using InDesign and Photoshop for some time... Photoshop crashes at the "import pdf" dialog, and causes the entire system to be slow and unstable.
I have recently upgraded to CS6 from CS3. I'm using the current version of OSX Mountain Lion on an early 2008 Mac Pro.

An application cannot bring down the operating system on Mac or Windows unless something is very, very wrong with the system.
If you did an upgrade install of Mountain Lion my first suggestion would be to back up your data, deactivate your applications and then do a clean install.

  • Unstable Pen Pressure only on Photoshop Windows 8

    Hi,
Photoshop CS4 CS5 or CS6 is the only program that is unstable with pen pressure sensitivity, all the other programs work flawlessly (zbrush, art rage, sketchbook, painter, mypaint, etc).
In Photoshop if the stroke is fast enough it will draw the line normally and with pressure, but if the line is drawn slowly it will make 100% pressure just like a mouse behaves.
Here's an example of brush strokes, the black ones are the slow strokes that don't register pressure sensitivity.
This topic has been covered in these 3 posts "Wacom Intuos4 + PS CS4 Pressure problem", ""Pressure Sensitivity Problem with Wacom Bamboo Pen Tablet in Windows 7" and "CS4 32bit & Wacom Intuos 3 - Intermittent Pressure Sensitivity"
The evident solution for Windows 7 is disabling the "Press and Hold" feature on "Pen and Touch" settings, But in Windows 8 disabling this check only makes Photoshop unresponsive to pressure to the extreme that not even a single stroke can be drawn. Only random dots with no direction or pressure sensitivity. This is a big no no.
My computer is a Motion LE 1700 tablet that works with Wacom Tablet PC Drivers, there's only a single driver released for Windows 8 which is ISD_DualTouch_710-8.
Older Windows 7 drivers for Wacom Tablet PC don't recognize the pen. And default drivers from the Motion Computing website don't work with Photoshop.
An in all, the 8 ISD_DualTouch_710-8 driver works flawlessly with all my apps with the exception of Photoshop, causing the weird intermitent sensitivity behaviour.
    Thanks!

    Lonrot,
I wanted to point out that this will work great on a Motion LE1700 with the keyboard workaround, because it also lacks capacitive touch input.
On newer tablets i.e. Samsung Series 7 slate, ASUS Ep121 Slate, etc. that have dual digitizers with capacitive touch, with the 7.0.9-5 driver, It disables palm rejection. Which forces you to either disable Touch input, or not rest your hand on the screen.  So yes, it is still quite broken.  But as Anon_A mentioned, it is a problem between Adobe, MS and Wacom.  But i did get a reply from Wacom:
    Hello Jordan,
Thank you for entering a bug. We are aware of the issue with Photoshop and are working with Microsoft and Adobe for a resolution. We appreciate your patience while we try to come to a resolution.
    Thank you,

So i will keep posting to this thread as i hear more on the issue.  I have gone back to Windows 7 for the time being due to the need of capacitive touch for my work flow, untill this issue is resolved.
I did want to leave one more thing, for people on Windows 8, that want to use 7.0.9-5 with a dual digitizer input slate. Someone has wrote a program to manually turn on and off capacitive input, you can find the download here

  • Photoshop CC is becoming increasingly unstable...

While in Photoshop for Windows 7 64-bit, and mostly in the blending options window, photoshop will freeze, then open MULTIPLE "help" windows in my browser, then photoshop will crash probably 80% of the time that this happens.  Photoshop CC has also become quite laggy lately as well...  sometimes starting right up no problems, other times taking 2-3 minutes to start up and "unfreeze".  I check my processes when this happens and nothing else is using resources that would conflict with Photoshop, yet Photoshop will sometimes use 13-15% CPU resources when this happens.
    Windows 7 64-bit
    Intel i7 Quad Core
    6GB High Speed RAM
nVidia 9800GT SLI video card (2GB onboard Video RAM) with the latest drivers.

Also have the same problem. Photoshop CC, although I'm sure this was going on when I was using cs6.
I have just lost lodes of work and it didnt give me a back up and whaaaaa!

  • Photoshop CC seems to be totaly unstable.

Open image in ACR make a few adjustments then open in photoshop as a smart object. Copy the background layer and change it to soft light adjust opacity to 20% save the image and then try to add a levels layer. After adjusting the levels photoshop quits. Also cropped the image after copying the background layer. This seems to be a new problem.  I think there has been an update to photoshop since I last used it.
Anyone else having this same or similary problem.

I did a check on the driver and found a newer version that was released this January.

  • Photoshop CC 2014 Crashes Randomly when using the Text Tool...

Since the most recent Photoshop update, CC 2014 has been extremely buggy and completely unstable on my Mac Pro, which is inexcusable from a paid service .  The most common crash for me occurs when I try to use the “text tool” or attempt to edit text (usually the color).  I am occasionally prompted with a window stating, “Could not complete your request because of a program error” and then Photoshop crashes seconds after.
After the initial crash and Apple’s various prompts I usually go through 2-3 consecutive cycles of Photoshop attempting to open back up and crashing over and over again.
I’ve attempted signing out and back in to my Creative Cloud as suggested in several threads, but that was unsuccessful in mitigating the crashing.  Is there a fix for this, other than uninstalling and reinstalling?  My studio has too many upcoming deliverables and deadlines to do a fresh install, so suggestions/solutions would be appreciated .

  • Photoshop CC 2014.1 crashing

Been using Photoshop CC 2014.1 since it came out and just recently I have been getting several crashes where I get the spinning Beach Ball. It actually ends up crashing my computer. I reinstalled PSD CC 2014 but it still happens. I also have PSD CS6. Tried opening the same file in that program and it also crashed. Tried opening it on my other computer (MacBook Pro - 4 year old computer) and it worked fine. Occasionally I get a message that says "Scratch Disk Error".  I use a 27 inch iMac running OS 10.9.4 - 32GB of Ram. Any help would be great.

    Hi,
I appreciate my answer probably won't help but might point in the right direction. I had the same problem albeit PC based - I found by trial and error that Photoshop CC crashed/was unstable and took Windows with it when I was also using TomTom's My Connect service, Photoshop remained this way (same symptoms you described) even when I stopped using the TomTom service - until a reboot.
TomTom My Connect is their online "utility" for updating their portable sat navs, the crash occurred when both the utility was running and the sat nav connected via USB.
I find it interesting that two essentially online services caused one to crash?

  • Photoshop wont open!

Ok now i cant figure this out. i installed the recent security update and now things are going screwy. i go to open up photoshop and it wont open. the dock icon bounces then goes away leaving me wondering whats going on. I uninstalled and re installed the whole Creative Suite but photoshop still wont budge. It was working just fine before the security update and now i duno what. is this to blame or is there something else?

Ok, I got this right from the source, so ideally it will work. OK
Follow the directions, repost and let me know
    MAC OS10:
First, be sure to BackUp your data, then run Mac Software Update (located in System Preferences) to bring the Operating System (OS) and Mac firmwares up to date. And run all the Adobe Updaters adobe.com.
Ruling out the User account and routine maintenance are the first steps in troubleshooting crash freeze stability problems, including setting up clean User Account, and using Disk Utility to Repair Disk and Repair Permissions, Safe Boot, and running fsck -y.
If the problem clears logged into a new "Spare User" account, a User's account preference is corrupted. If the problem does not clear in a new "Spare User" account, the problem is likely system wide, or hardware.
Rule out RAM gballard.net is also important troubleshooting. In addition to crashing, kernel panics, Type 1 Type 2 Type 3 errors, Unexpectedly Quiting, corrupted files and disk errors, typical symptoms of bad Ram in Photoshop include rows lines patches of bad pixels on screen that also print (the actual file is being corrupted). If the bad pixel areas are on the monitor, but do not print (the actual file is not corrupted), video card or video-card drivers are prime suspects. Remember, video cards also have flash firmwares to flash update.
Test Hardware Interface gballard.net for the hardware's ability to transfer data free of corruption on hard disk drive interfaces (such as SCSI, IDE, etc.). See the bottom of the linked page and DOWNLOAD Timothy A. Seufert's dctest. Dctest assumes that your CPU and memory and disk are working fine. There are OS9 and OSX versions in the download.
    Bad Damaged Hard Drives:
If running Apple's Disk Utility's FirstAid Repair Disk and Repair Permissions, and the Mac's fsck -y Unix command cannot fix any all disk problems, I would recommend running third-party disk utilities BEWARE! gballard.net only as a last resort.
Bad Blocks apple.com on the hard drive can also cause a computer to be very unstable....
"Haxies," those free/shareware, application and user hacks that modify various System features, application programs and plug-ins, including bad fonts and font management gballard.net, are also prime SUSPECTS to troubleshoot and rule out, as are flaky video–card drivers. Check your video card manufacturer web site for video card firmware updaters, new drivers and compatibility issues.
Another thing to troubleshoot for is illegal Unix characters in the file names starting from the hard drive name down. These illegal characters may include: * ~ / + ! " é ñ ; : ) ? (see Mac and Windows OS File/Folder naming rules portfoliofaq.com for complete information). If you're using any illegal characters (or extra long names or spaces) in your naming hierarchy, try renaming them.
Photoshop CS and CS2 seems to be super sensitive to bad fonts, so be sure to rule out the fonts if you are having stability issues.
Troubleshooting Photoshop won't install, from the original Adobe Install CD, try copying the 'Adobe(R) Photoshop(R) Folder' (100 to 150 MB) to the desktop - this folder contains the installer and all its files. Eject the CD, and run the installer from the desktop.
This copy-installer-folder-to-hard-drive technique works on the Adobe installers that require us to verify an original full install CD (insert the full retail install CD, when the installer asks for it point it to the CD).
For troubleshooting specific numeric Mac OS error codes, try appleerrorcodes.com.
My most decisive TroubleShooting technique — Empty = Versatile gballard.net — is to Test on an OS–Suspect Level. In less than an hour, this method effectively rules out the hardware, the install and its other third–party issues.
Ann Shelbourne offers some sage font troubleshooting advice, Ann wrote:
Have you cleaned out your AdobeFnt.lst files recently?
Do a Search for "adobefnt" and delete all that you find — except for "AdobeFnt.db".
(Don't worry, they will re-create themselves as needed).
Have you ruled out conflicts between System fonts and your other fonts? (Ann continued)
    Have you ran Cocktail?:
    Launch Cocktail
    Choose "Pilot"
Check everything on the first dialog and set to "Automatically: Restart"
Then click Options and check everything except "Cookies"
Return to main panel and click "RUN"
It will take just a few minutes and should improve performance.
Wade Zimmerman has found a quirky FIX for Photoshop CS (8.0) not opening, crashing on launching, under Panther 10.3.2, Wade wrote:
Try changing the time zone then change it back to the correct time zone that you are in but first trash your PS Preference, if that does not work try changing the City within the time zone and then change it back. Or some kind of combination. But again, each time trash PS preferences maybe even restarting the computer.
Ann Shelbourne added, if you are in the UK, don't choose GMT but choose your nearest city by name.
This sounds goofy — but it has worked for a lot of users.

Over 2.5 giga bytes of RAM: The Mac OS limits all applications to maximum of 2 giga bytes of RAM. In other words, setting Photoshop's Memory setting to 100% will provide Photoshop with up to 2 GB memory, and leave the remaining 500 MB for the Operating System and other applications.
We do need to be careful to leave a cushion of unused RAM for whatever applications we run concurrently with Photoshop.
If we get a lot of OS 10's Spinning Beachball Color Wheel while using Photoshop, we probably need to install more RAM, or assign a lesser percentage of RAM to Photoshop. Seeing the BeachBall is normal for working on very large files (over 200 mega bytes) while Photoshop's ScratchDisks gballard.net catch up.
With over 3 giga bytes of installed RAM, I would start with a 100–percent Memory setting in Photoshop.
NOTE: Adobe is recommending the Ram/Memory issues for 2.5GB-plus work stations...if 100% Memory is not working optimally, as recommended above, try reducing down to a "safer" 75%, said Adobe's Chris Cox.
Cache Levels: Adobe is recommending setting this to 4 (for now because of an OS10.3.2/PS8.0 conflict). I generally set the Cache Level to 8 on newer machines, I recall CS2 is defaulting to 6.
    Trashing Preferences:
If you're trying to rule out Photoshop corruption or reset Default settings, FIRST try trashing:
    HardDrive> User> Library> Preferences> Adobe Photoshop 7.0 Settings folder.
    HardDrive> User> Library> Preferences> com.adobe.Photoshop.plist file.
There are several other Photoshop preferences there you may trash.
    Relaunch Photoshop.
If the problem has not cleared, Mac OS 10, Trash the following (and reinstall Photoshop):
    HardDrive> Applications> Adobe Photoshop 7/CS folder.
    HardDrive> User> Library> Preferences> Adobe Photoshop 7.0 Settings folder.
    HardDrive> User> Library> Preferences> com.adobe.Photoshop.plist file.
    Reinstall Photoshop.
    Run all Photoshop Updaters adobe.com.
    +++++
If the problem has not cleared after purging/reinstalling/updating Photoshop, the problem is likely outside of Photoshop in third–party, bad hardware or a corrupted install. At this point we generally need to Initialize/Erase/StartFromScratch gballard.net...a good opportunity to rethink Partitioning our disks for a Photoshop workflow gballard.net and implement a BackUp strategy gballard.net.
In severe cases — to prepare a Mac for a Apple Authorized Service Provider (AASP) — I follow my troubleshooting MELTDOWN procedure gballard.net. In addition to repairing any Bad Blocks, this procedure will be conclusive in a couple hours, plus the time it takes to ZeroWrite Write Zeros, if the problem is hardware or installed software or damaged hard drive....
    +++++
    BEFORE Initializing, Reformatting, Erasing:
SEARCH the Adobe Photoshop Mac Forum adobe.com , GoogleWeb.com, and GoogleGroups.com for key words for second opinions, known bugs, posted fixes, solutions and work arounds.

  • Whenever I open a file in Photoshop it says "Adobe Photoshop CS6 has stopped working A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available." and it CRASHES  a solution will be real

I tried re installing it but it crashes again I use CS6 version , but I have no Idea What causes it

First use CS6 menu Help>About Photoshop to check your version.  The Latest perpetual versions are Mac version 13.0.6, Windows version 13.0.1.3 and the subscription version is 13.1.2. If you do no see one of these versions you need to use menu Help>Updates.  If that does not update you to one of those version you may need to re-install CS6 on top of of your current install and use menu Help>Updates.  CS6 is the buggiest version of Photoshop ever releases. You need the updates without the updates CS6 is very unstable.
If your CS6 is up to date use your Windows Acclivity Center Reliability History to locate your CS6 critical stopped working events and look at their details to see where CS6 is crashing.  This may shed some light on your problem.  CS6 use you Display adapters GPU for some features.  If you have more then one GPU or you don't have the latest displaye adapter system device driver from its manufacturer installed CS6 may crash.
The following Shows Problems I have with Photoshop CC.  The module  IMSLib.dll will crash if I try to use Behance or Adobe exchange.  It may have something to to with Flash panels which was removed in CC 2014.  For Behance works in CC 2014 and Adobe exchange was removed in CC 2014. View in new browser tab or window for this site scale images poorly.  In a tab or window you can scale image to their actual size,

  • How to troubleshoot photoshop elements 11 on macbook pro retina?

I'm having a bit of a nightmare. I can't back up My Catalog because it is nowhere to be found. My photographs are copied onto Pictures but why can't I see the My Catalog with all the media on my PSE11? Should I uninstall PSE11 first and how to do that on MBP? Am I able to reinstall PSE11 without a CD drive? Will I lose all my albums or is there a way of keeping them somewhere?
I've already lost many photographs when a WD ext drive got a mechanical failure and have had to buy a new apple when my previous one got more and more unstable at the time of the Mavericks upgrade, so I'm quite nervous about this.
Thanks to anyone who could help.
