Photoshop is using 4-6GB of RAM and hanging up

Since the most recent cc update to 14.1.2 Ps is hanging up on simple tasks such as cropping images. Activity Monitor shows 4-6GB of RAM being used by Ps. This problem does not occur in CS6 which is using under 800 MB of RAM and cropping 200MB files without any problem.
Can someone make a recommendation on how to remedy this problem?
Thanks in Advance,
Celeste

Hi Mandhir,
Thanks for getting back to me. Is it common for Ps CC to utilize between
4-6GB of RAM? My Macbook Pro is maxed out at 8GBŠ Photoshop doesn't leave
much available at that utilization. CS6 only uses 800MBŠ I've never had a
problem editing images with that configuration.
All of the performance settings are optimized to the KB you sent over I
went through that over the weekend.
I think I may have found a bug as well in the crop tool. When I changed the
setting in the crop tool from 'fixed' to 'original' ratio Ps didn't hang up..
I can repeat the problemŠ
Set the crop tool to fixed W x H, add only one measurement such as 1600px w,
leave the height field empty (for example), set res to 96 DPI and then
cropŠ. Ps will hang up every time.

  • Photoshop 2014 keeps running out of ram and I am losing my work.

When I save a PSD file I get the message "out of ram and cannot save", or cannot clone, use brush, etc. because out of ram.  This is when I first open photoshop too.
I have a new machine with 32 gigs of ram and 1 terrabyte SS memory.  Scratch disks are pointed to my hard drive and two external drives.
I have had Photoshop older versions on much smaller machines in the past and never run out of ram.  This is a bug in photoshop 2014 - no one has been able to fix it so far.
I am losing work and time when I have deadlines to make.  Photoshop is becoming worthless - I am going to use gimp.......

That is blatant user error.  If you have other drives, UNCHECK your boot drive as a scratch disk.
The rule of thumb I follow to figure out scratch space says to figure on 50 to 100 times the size of your largest file ever multiplied by the number of files you have open.  I have seen the scratch file exceed 800 GB once, an admittedly rare occurrence, but it often exceeds 200 GB when stitching large panoramas and the like.
As an example—and stressing that I'm aware that others have even more scratch space than I do—I keep two dedicated, physically separate hard drives as my primary and secondary Photoshop scratch disks and a lot of GB free on my boot drive for the OS which is not checkedlisted as a scratch disk in Photoshop Preferences..  I also have 16 GB of RAM installed.
Additionally, if you only have a single HD, i.e. your boot drive, you'd need it to be large enough to accommodate both the swap files of the OS as well as Photoshop's scratch.

  • Photoshop only using 20% of 8Gb ram

i am usually dealing with huge files in photoshop and i have 8Gb of ram yet my G5 dual processor with 80Gb of hard drive space and 8Gb of ram only lets photoshop use about 20% of available ram. it says it is using 100% of available ram.
is there a way i can allocate more ram to photoshop?
    thanks
    eric

RAM is limited by the program not the system. Currently, Photoshop 7 and Photoshop CS are "officially" limited to addressing no more than 2 GB of RAM. In actual practice, a "100% Allocation" of RAM to Photoshop 7.01 is around 1800 MB on systems with 2.5 or more GB of RAM installed.

  • MacPro with10.7.3. running a Python script in terminal I see a : "There is no more application memory available on your startup disk". Python uses 10G of 16G RAM and  VM =238G with 1TB free. Log: macx-swapon FAILED - 12. It only happens with larger inputs

On my MacPro with10.7.3. while running a Python script in terminal, after a while, in several hours actually,  I see a system message for the Terminal app: "There is no more application memory available on your startup disk". Both RAM and VM appear to be fine at this point, i.e. Python uses only 10G of 16G RAM and  VM =238G with ~1TB free. Log reads: " macx-swapon FAILED - 12" multiple times. Furthermore, other terminal windows can be opened and commands run there. It only happens with larger inputs (text files), but with inputs that are about half the size everything runs smoothly.  So the issue must be the memory indeed, but where to look for the problem/fix?

    Have you tried with the --diag flag for diagnostics? Or changing verbose to 3 to show debug messages? Clearly one of three things is happening;
    1. You ARE running out of disk space, but once it errors out the space is reclaimed if the output file is deleted on error. When it fails, does your output have the content generated up to the point of termination?
    2. The application (Terminal) is allocated memory that you are exceeding
    3. The task within Terminal is allocated memory that you are exceeding
I don't know anything about what this does but is there a way to maybe run a smaller test run of it? Something that takes 10 minutes? Just to see if it works.

  • Photoshop not using set amount of ram. Stuck at 6gb

Hey guys, just recently started having issues with photoshop not getting the set amount of ram that it needs. I have it set to use 24gb of Ram (I have 32gb) Tried a reset, tried resetting back to factory then back, nothing. The odd thing is that if I set it to use only 1 gb of ram, it still idles at 6gb. Any tips on how to approach this would be greatly appreciated as I have projects on the run that require much attention.
    Thanks.

    Mac or Win?
If you give complete and detailed information about your setup and the issue at hand, such as your platform (Mac or Win), exact versions of your OS, of Photoshop and of Bridge, machine specs, what troubleshooting steps you have taken so far, what error message(s) you receive, if having issues opening raw files also the exact camera make and model that generated them, etc., someone may be able to help you.

  • Safari is using all my free Ram and resources

Ever since Safari 5.1 and the emergance of "Safari Web Content" safari now takes sometimes up to 2GB of Ram! Thats more than every other program running combined! I am then left with ~10-50 mb of ram to share with Dreamweaver Photoshop and several other programs.
Once it bogs down all my resources it will require me to reload all my pages before I can use any of my pages. Once it returns its still using just about as much resources.
-First of all it is not my extenstions or plug-ins, (I never had any till just recently)
-I am running safari on just a few windows on several desktops.
-I almost never experience this amount of ram usage before 5.1
I have seen others experience this and the only viable solution seems to be "just close down safari and open it back up"
I am developing for the web and keep several pages open on multiple desktops for different reasons, when I close down Safari all my windows from all my other desktops (at least now safari saves my old windows) and opens them all on one desktop and taking sometimes nearly a minute to do so.
It has been two versions now since 5.1 (5.1.1, 5.1.2) and little has been done in regards to (in my opinion) this very serious issue. (there might have been slight decreases in ram usage but if so I dont really notice it)
What can I do (or what is being done) to limit the amount of Ram consumption Safari is allowed to take (adobe programs have this option)

I have the same issue. I see that no one has added to this since March. Does that mean it was address somewhere else? I understand the app is designed to use as much memory as it can grab to make it run better, but when it grabs so much that you start virtual memory thrashing, that's a problem. I have a Mac Mini with 2GB that was barely functional when Safari was running. I just upgraded to 8GB, and it's much better, but Safari still gladly takes half of that memory. I don't see how clearing the cache or history would have anything to do with RAM utilization. I agree this is a real problem.

  • Recent xserver using a lot more RAM and is noticably slower.

To save battery life I lock both the graphics card and CPU into there lowest frequency settings. This was fine with little performance impact. However after a recent X server upgrade it has started using substantially more ram (around 5~ meg, use to be around 1). Also Firefox, and even Xterm and Vim now scroll very badly. Is there anything I can do about this, without raising the CPU/GFX frequency.
    Thanks.

    Bump.

What is strange is that the airport process no longer exists in Activity Monitor. Oh well everything works as normal again

  • Photoshop Using All RAM And Making 15gb TEMP Files-HELP!?

    Hey Guys,
Having a massive issue with Photoshop CC right now and need help asap!
I was recently working a on a really big PSB file (about 6gb or so) I finished the job, saved it, sent it to client, all went nicely. However now when I open Photoshop for whatever reason it instantly uses all of my RAM, and creates a huge 15gb RandomPrice TEMP file on my SSD scratch disk (as shown in the screenshot, excuse the crude snipping tool skills.) I have tried deleting the TEMP file, restarting my PC and opening PS again but it just starts making the file again, it has also drastically slowed down the time it takes to open PS which used to be about 2 seconds, and is now approximately 20 seconds. I'm pretty well clueless what to do here so throw some suggestion my way guys! EDIT: This temp file always reverts to the exact same size after deleting it, right down to the KB. I can sit in explorer refreshing it, watching the size of the temp file going up, and as soon as it reaches 15,276,080KB Photoshop opens up correctly.
    Cheers,
    Tom

  • Early 2008 Macbook Pro Should I upgrade to 6gb ram and SSD?

In the last few months, I've entered the world of 64-bit computing. I learned that this now means that my Early 2008 Macbook Pro, that has been fantastic and flawless for 6 years, needs an upgrade or replacement. I'm hard-hard stuck on whether I should upgrade it or replace it.
    My current configuration is:
Processor  2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    Memory  4 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM
    Storage 200 GB SATA Disk
I need to run OSX Mavericks and Windows 7 in VMWare or Bootcamp (I don't really like bootcamp).
    I am eyeing two upgrades
    1) Crucial 4GB Single DDR2 667MHz (PC2-5300) CL5 SODIMM 200-Pin Notebook Memory Module CT51264AC667
    http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001RB21JY/ref=ox_sc_act_title_2?ie=UTF8&psc=1& smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER
    2) Crucial M500 240GB SATA 2.5-Inch 7mm (with 9.5mm adapter) Internal Solid State Drive CT240M500SSD1
    http://www.amazon.com/Crucial-2-5-Inch-adapter-Internal-CT240M500SSD1/dp/B00BQ8R M1A/ref=sr_1_10?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1392961391&sr=1-10&keywords=ssd
My question is: Is it worth it for me max out my computer by upgrading again for $250? Will this hold me over for another 2-3 years, or should I look to replace?

Well, I have researched and researched and researched and come to a conclusion. I've compared many brand new replacement computers, and also reviewed my options for upgrading my computer. Upgrading to a new computer altogether, I have come across a few very attractive offers, but they're all in the $800+ price range.
I've decided that OSX Mavericks is my main issue. My early 2008 Macbook Pro was 100% perfectly sufficient for everything I needed it for when using OSX Snow Leopard. After the upgrade, VMWare Fusion runs like a sloth and everything else runs like a slug (maybe a slug that had a 5 hour energy...). Seriously. Just now, I am running Safari and MS Word while copying files to my backup drive. The beachball is all over the place, whereas the CPU is only at 15% use and RAM is at 3.97/4.00. I'm barely using the computer, and it's ridiculously hot and the fans are screaming.
First thing I'm going to do is 'upgrade' back to Snow Leopard to recover my RAM and regain the ability to effectively run my VMWare virtual machine. Then, I'm going to opt for the $100 upgrade to total 6GB of RAM and $150 upgrade to a SSD.

  • Why is firefox 7b using a lot more memory and cpu on my computer?

I'm trying firefox 7 beta in a debian squeeze box. It is using a lot of RAM and CPU compared to previous releases of firefox(I've tried disabling all plugins and add-ons, not a big improvement). In the follow link here is a summary from about:memory, websites tabs opened at that time and the usage of % mem and cpu of my system: http://pastebin.com/8ji1gmLk
I'm using firefox on all my computers for a while now. So changing the browser is not an option for me now.
It did crash few times when loading a lot of tabs. Please let me know if there is another information that would be useful for fixing this. Thanks

Is it using a significant amount more resources than 6.0 did?
I noticed 6.0 is a VAST resource hog over 5.0 and earlier. It's a very bad flaw in the new version, and has a lot of people upset.
What has me curious is whether this is a new resource problem or whether it was present in 6.0 and you are just not noticing it.
One suggestion: Don't run BETA versions of ANY software on "all your machines". Not when rolling back the version is not an option. That's generally a bad idea, since beta versions are likely to have bugs.
With FF, now, I would never let it automatically update. I don't trust their new update policies, so I would suggest you turn "auto updates" to OFF, and do it manually, only after you hear the new release is stable, which we know 6.0 is NOT.

  • Enlightenment17 shows up in bad resolution and hangs on startup

    Hey,
After using Enlightenment (enlightenment17 package) successfully for about 1 week it broke today:
As I started Arch as usual and logged in via LXDM Enlightment showed up in a 4:3 resolution (i use a 16 / 9 notebook) and hanged on the preparing message (these blinking colored squares under the "enlightenment" fontart).
I didn't find any error messages in dmesg, Xorg logs 0 - 7 and nothing in journalctl so I decided to post without logs. If you need more information pls ask^^
    System:
    Arch x86_64
    Kernel 3.9.9
Intel and Nvidia Driver (using bumblebee successfully)
enlightenment17 without any extra modules or themes
    Any suggestions?

I had problems recently with Bodhi E17.  I couldn't start X from the login screen.  IIRC, I had to press Ctrl F5, login, then press Ctrl F7 to get X to start.  I had problems with the compositor.  I turned off compositing, and can now login normally, but videos are horrendously slow (either with compositing enabled or not).  I just gave up for the time being.  I have an Intel Sandy Bridge laptop with the Intel HD3000 GPU.  I performed a system update, but the issue remains.  Perhaps it's a KMS issue???
No problem using the same laptop with Arch XFCE, Fedora 18 Gnome, or Mageia 3 KDE.
EDIT:  Discovered the problem in Bodhi E17 is with sna acceleration.  Had to revert to uxa acceleration.  Funny, sna works fine in Arch XFCE, Fedora 18 Gnome, and Mageia 3 KDE.

The system is very slow, takes ages to come up.
When I use voice chat, laptop freezes and hangs.
Please give me an advise what I should do.

    Hi
If you want to have faster start up check which processes and applications start with OS and disable all of them you do not need. The start up time will not take so much time as before. Here some useful tips:
Spyware and adware can significantly slow startup. If your notebook is taking long time to launch, it could be because of spyware or adware. It is recommended to use some anti-spyware/adware program.
Another possible reason your notebook startup is slow: too many installed programs on it, many of which have components that must be launched at startup. Removing unwanted programs will help improve startup performance. To remove a program in Windows XP, select Start, Control Panel, Add or Remove Programs, select the program you want to delete, and click Remove. Unfortunately, programs must be removed one at a time. If in doubt, don't delete.
Windows system tray, located in the bottom right-hand corner of your screen, contains small icons for programs that automatically start with the OS and run in the background and they slow your notebook's startup.
Some system-tray-resident programs let you disable their automatic startup routine. Place your cursor over a program icon you don't think you need to start up automatically and right-click. Select Open, Options, Preferences, or something similar and look for an option that enables the program to automatically start with Windows. Disable the option. The changes should take effect when you restart. If you need those programs you can launch them from the Start menu when they're needed.
Some applications automatically place a shortcut icon in the Startup folder to ensure they launch with Windows. You can put a stop to that. Right-click the Start button and click Explore. Windows Explorer launches with the Start menu selected by default. Click the plus sign next to Programs and click Startup. Shortcut icons will be listed in the right-hand pane. If you're sure you don't need any of the programs to launch automatically, delete or remove the shortcuts from there and then restart your notebook.
Not all programs install an icon in the system tray and run in the background--and yet, they still start up automatically with Windows. You can use Windows' System Configuration Utility to stop programs and tasks from starting up automatically.
Click Start > Run > Type "msconfig" > Choose the Startup tab. Remove the checks from any tasks you want to prevent from automatically launching. Click OK. You'll need to restart for changes to take effect. Click Restart and Windows XP will restart with only the system services and applications running resulting in a very fast logon / startup.
This tweak will disable all non-system startup services and applications so if you have anything you want to run in the background such as anti virus software do not disable that item.
About freezing I can not tell you much. Which voice chat application you use?
