Photoshop JPGs: View by kind

I have finder on icon view and it organisd in View by Kind so that subfolders appear at the top rather than everything alphabetically. However if I edit a jpg in Photoshop and save it all of these stay at the top of the finder view and as "photoshop jpgs" and instead of opening in Preview they open in Photoshop. How do I revert these back into standard jpg filesso that thwy stay integrated with everything else keeping my finder tidy?
Thanks.

As William mentioned, the problem is that they are being saved with the creator code in the resource fork, which identifies them specifically as Adobe Photoshop jpegs. You could use a program such a SuperGetInfo to go in an remove the creator code. Or just completely strip the resource fork off the files. A trip thru the Internet does that, there is a Terminal command which will do it, and I use an Applescript (which returns a weird error in Leopard, but still works). People used to use the Contextual Menu item "GrimRipper" to do it:
http://www.abracode.com/free/cmworkshop/grim_ripper.html
It hasn't been updated in a long time, whether it will work in Leopard at all, or even cause problems, I don't know.

  • How do I save a photoshop jpg as a "PictureViewer" jpg document?

How do I save a photoshop jpg image as a universal "PictureViewer" jpg document?

Just did some tests. And I am starting to understand a few things.
I was using Photoshop 6 on my old apple quad. Yes, I know, 12 year old stuff. I have just upgraded to Adobe CC application on my new mac.
When saving an image from photo shop as a jpg, I did not see, and still do not see, the picture viewer icon I am used to seeing on a jpg image from my old mac. Photoshop 6 saved jpgs only as photoshop jpgs.
I just ran some tests. Saved some logos and pictures as jpg’s from the new CC Photoshop. When I import them into my old mac, I see the Picture Viewer Icon. And when I click on any of these, it opens in Picture Viewer. Tells me you are correct. Photoshop is saving the jpg images as the universal Picture Viewer JPGs.
I guess I was expecting to see a "save as Picture Viewer” option from the Photoshop "save as" menu. And when I did not see the picture viewer icon for the new saved jpg image, I assumed it was still saving this as a photoshop jpg.
Thanks for prompting me to do some homework and test a few things out.
I thought that the new photoshop should be able to save jpgs in the picture viewer realm, but had to run a few tests to see the actual result on an older computer for this to sink in and recognize the result.
Thanks for your time and patience Silkrooster.

  • Importing Photoshop jpgs into FCP

I am wondering if there is something I can do in FCP to some photoshop jpgs I've imported to make the text less fuzzy? The jpgs look great when still, but when you press play, the text loses its crispness and fuzzes out. A filter I can add? Something I need to do in Photoshop before importing into FCP?
    Cheers,
    april

Thanks to all of you who provided helpful answers, I really appreciate it. I didn't realize about the lossy issue, great to know!! I tried the deleting of text in PS and adding it in FCP, but I'm limited with the design aspect of fonts in FCP, not being able to get near the effects I can in PS, so would rather try another solution. Yes, DV and DV-sized jpegs. When viewed on a TV, the text is still fuzzy though not as bad as on the MAC - so I will try lossless PS formats.
(Some of you need to work on etiquette, you come across as fairly rude in your posts. I apologize if I didn't provide ample information, all you have to do is ask for clarification - I wasn't sure what else would be helpful to know. Or don't answer, as it appears painful for you to help novices. Take a deep breath!)

I would like to remove a short gray edge from two images. I need help in that I am not yet able to use PhotoShop. Could somebody kindly help me with this?

I doubt it Doc Maik, but I am certainly happy to learn The image is this one (and a similar one). They would be beautiful portraits if not for the "extra mouth". The grey edge that I would like to remove is the excess of (grey) mouth that is actually my horse's chin, but that in the pictures looks like a wider, looping mouth. Practically, looking at the picture, the "extra mouth" to the left. What I would love it to be able correct that to look like a normal mouth, which means that half of the protruding edge should be removed. I am not sure I was able to explain myself, but here is one of the two pictures. I thank you for you kindness in being available to advise me.

  • Viewing Photoshop JPGs in Finder

I love the way you can shuffle through and zoom photos in the Leopard Finder. But by default, my system would open image files in Preview. I'm a designer, so I always need PNGs, JPGs, and GIFs to open in Photoshop. So I set the application of choice for each of these file types in the Get Info window. Now I can easily open them in Photoshop, but a lot of the images aren't displaying in the Finder. Instead of seeing the actual image in each file, I see an icon for the file type. Is there a way to have the default application for these file types be Photoshop and still see all file images in the Finder?

I kind of sounds like you're saving your images from Photoshop without a preview. In PS, open the preferences (Command+K). Click on the File Handling heading in the left column. For Image Previews, set the pull down menu to "Always Save". Check boxes on for Icon, Full Size and Macintosh Thumbnail.

  • Transferring Photoshopped jpgs from mac to Pc?

This has been somewhat addressed on previous threads, but I couldn't find a simple answer, so I'll ask it again.  I just did a huge project, Photoshopping 700 photos on a Mac, using an old version of Elements (2.0).  When loaded back into a PC, I got the two files that previous threads have talked about, a small one with the "._P" before the regular name, that has ID data etc, and then the actual jpg file with its regular correct name. Except-- those don't open in the regular Windows Photo and Fax Viewer.  They will open in some other apps, like Explorer.  I put them through Irfanview, a free app that has a viewer (that does work for these), which does a batch conversion, and "converted" the jpgs to jpgs (!)--that worked for 2/3's of the pictures, but even there the files ended up being different sizes, and I don't know if my hard work is getting changed in the process, so this approach isn't desirable, plus it doesn't work for all of them anyway.  Surely--hopefully-- there must be a simple non-lossy way to deal with what has to be a very common problem???
All saviours will be hugely appreciated--thanks!

Barbara-- I just found an answer on a previous thread that seems to work-- dragging the jpgs on the mac from their folder onto the desktop, and then from there on to the thumb drive.  I still get the two forks, but the main one opens.  Question: (unless you know a better way to go that doesn't create this)-- is there any reason not to delete the data fork?  It seems to open fine when it is deleted.

  • Bridge,( Installed, Default .jpg viewer), doesn't open by default jpg files.

I have Adobe Bridge installed and set as my default image viewer including .jpg's. It appears in programs list and as default image browser. I have some jpegs, however that a friend sent me that won't launch Bridge when selected. Their extensions are DSC###.jpg.
When selected, Windows viewer is launched. When file association is promted, Bridge does not appear in the program list, even when a deeper search in the Adobe file is performed. The images appear and open properly IN Bridge, but not by default when their file is selected outside of Bridge. Bridge appears in file association for other .jpgs. There doesn't seem to be a file extension DSC listed ( I didn't think it would be).
What Gives? (Win7 ultimate, Adobe CS5)
    TY in advance!

Perhaps it is a matter of semantics.  Bridge is not a separate program, so it will not be listed as the default program to open image but listed as CS5 (don't have any of those programs on this laptop, and out of town).  It is strictly a browser so technically the images do not open within it.  You can view the image but to open it it will be in the parent program Photoshop or one of the other in a suite.
Adobe is quite particular on images.  Some images just will not open in PS.  Then the best bet is to open in a program like Infanview and then use "save as" to save without imperfections.
Quicktime is the default program to open many files in Bridge, and is necessary with certain file formats.
If I am not getting to the heart of your issue I don't mean to dance around it, just not fully comprehend it.

  • Photo loosing sharpness when passing it to Photoshop and viewing it in LR again

    Hi
I passed a JPG from LR to Photoshop CC, did a little change and saved it. Then I realized, that the PSD file has lost some sharpness compared to the original JPG.
It doesn't matter if I pass it with the option "with lightroom changes" or not. It happens in both cases that use a copy.
    That's really weird and frustrating.
But, I found out that this only the case if I view the photo in LR   (In Phothoshop and Irfanview all version of the photo looks the same regarding the sharpness)
A very ugly bug in LR 5.7?
    edit:
The difference get smaller after viewing both photos in 1:1. But still, there is a difference viewable when switching between exactly the same images (just passed it for test purpose to Photoshop as copy, and saved it as JPG, no editing in PS).
    Regards

First of all I should say that I was able to download the file, but initially I got an error that said it was not found.  It was probably just an incompatibility of the dropfiles site and my default browser download plug-in and it finally worked just using the standard browser download function.  Looking at the contents of the photo, itself, there are no LR adjustments that have been saved to the JPG, only a few metadata changes such as adding the photo location as being in Hawaii.
Anyway, there are several issues that are being mixed together:
    1)  When a JPG is opened and resaved it will be slightly different due to JPG compression being a lossy format and that the color workspace in PS is slightly different than in LR so when PS converts the colors from its 16-bit workspace to 8-bits the output pixels won't be exactly the same as the input pixels even if there were no substantive changes in PS, just an open and resave.
In this 4:1 screenshot the PS photo does have more variation in colors between adjacent rows of pixels than the original in LR:
    2)  This variation in colors can lead to an apparent difference in sharpness in LR when a resampled-smaller zoom level is used--in this case Fill with a small LR window size:
3a)  The PS resampling for display and the LR resampling for display use different algorithms due to LR having to be as quick as possible, so what you see at those zoom levels doesn't accurately reflect the actual image sharpness, only resampling algorithm accuracy and differences.
3b)  In LR there is a warning badge in the Detail panel when using zoom less than 100%.  Unfortunately the warning disappears when I press a key to do a screen capture of it:
So to summarize, pixels don't remain unchanged across an Open/Save cycle when you're using the lossy JPG format -- a reason to use TIFs, and less than 100%/1:1 zoom levels don't show sharpening accurately in any program and differences between resampling algorithms in different programs result in differences in the inaccuracy of the resampled result.  In other words, with less than 100%/1:1 zoom PS's inaccuracy is different than LR's inaccuracy so neither should be used to judge sharpness, and you should use 100%/1:1 zoom or higher.

  • Problem with PREVIEW and photoshop JPG's

    hi ...
    just trying out the new version of Adobe's CS6 Photoshop;
exported a dozen files as JPG's for an album, but my app,
"JAlbum", which I normally use for HTML albums rendered
them as totally black, and when I try to open them in PREVIEW,
(they look normal when they open), and RE-SAVE them,
PREVIEW will not allow the save, and the estimated file
size on the "save as" is ZERO KB.
would anyone have a clue of what is going on?
    thanks!

Check the rights where you're trying to save them, or change the Save location for a test.

  • Negative Kerning in Photoshop CC is all kinds of crazy

Just type any value below -300 into the tracking area to see what I mean. It does some kind of multiple of 4 before erroring out. I got stuck in an error loop by pressing escape and had to force quit. (mac)
    This is a major bug.
Would be interesting to know if @adobe have put web designer infront of this software. At all.
No option but to switch back to CS6 for now, shame.

    Hawken,
You need to have an account at Photoshop.com to post a "problem". (I can't remember if you can just use your username and password from here, or if you have to re-register there)
Would be nice to just have a simple bug submission form or website.
They used to, now you have to either create a new "Problem Post" over at Photoshop.com, or add to an existing post regarding same. I have reported this bug (introduced in 13.0.5 and appears to be in 14.0 as well), so you may just want to do a search for that topic and add to it or "vote" for it.
You may also ask why Adobe has two separate official Photoshop forums... seems like that would double their workload yet halve the effectiveness of user-to-user responses.

  • Photoshop album viewer

I've been building up a database of my photos using photoshop elements and originally album) over the past few years - currently I'm using PS elements v4. I've got PS installed on my main PC with all the photos/catalogs stored on a NAS drive. I'm now wondering if there's any way I can browse the databse on other PCs on our home network as that may my photos may become more that a write-only medium! Note - I only want to be able to select photos via tags (and ideally dates) and display them - no need to do any editing or anything like that. Is there any (free) viewer application available for .psa databases?

PSE was never designed to be a networked program, and can be quite slow if the catalog file is on a network. More details are here: http://www.johnrellis.com/psedbtool/photoshopelements-6-7-faq.htm#_Storing_the_catalog

  • View all kind of movies in ipod

    Hi people!
I would ask if i can install some kind of players in my ipod.
My idea is to install videolan and execute it to play avi, mkv, mpeg instead of viewing only .mov which is the default file that can handle the ipod
    is possible?
im bored of converting the movies to mov and loss quality in it.
And if is possible...can i view this files in the TV?
    Thanks in advanced

You cannot add to or change the types of videos which are playable on the iPod; this is determined by the iPod's firmware, which is only changeable by Apple. Software such as VLC which can play back videos is designed for a computer, not for an iPod, and cannot be run on the iPod.
The TV cannot play back content from an iPod if the iPod isn't able to display it.

  • Photoshop .jpgs not opening in InDesign

I'm trying to place a .jpg into an InDesign frame but keep getting this message: either files does not exist, you do not have permission, or the file may be in use by another application.
The file is on the computer, I can open it in PS and I've rebooted InDesign on its own and so the file isn't being used elsewhere. With regards permissions, the PS 'Save As' didn't seem to have any security or permission settings that I may have accidently assigned. The file has come from a Mac, but it opened in my windows PS ok. Are there PS security settings I'm not aware of - or anything that someone else can shed light on?
The photoshop files have come via Dropbox and were zipped. They opened fine in PS.
I can put other PS files in the same InDesign frame no problem. Many thanks in nervous anticipation!

Run through the steps you are taking, from the point of downloading from DropBox to the point where you see the error. Tell us all the things you do and the commands you are using to do them. I can't tell for sure if the files were unzipped, for example, or if perhaps you've tried to open instead of place them.

  • Flash JPG compression is terrible.  Can I use Photoshop JPG compression with transparency?

Flash seems to do a far worse job of JPG compression for some reason.  A picture at JPG 80 can look great in Photoshop but completely blocky in Flash.  So I prefer to JPG compress in Photoshop and then just retain that compression when importing to Flash.
However this doesn't work when I need the image to have transparency. In this case I save as PNG-24 in Photoshop and then let Flash do the JPG compression.  But now the image looks terrible unless I go for JPG 90 or above.
Is there some way to get the best of both worlds?  Good quality JPG compression plus transparency?

Well first off, .jpg does not have transparency. So no, you can't have
Good quality JPG compression plus transparency?
For that you'll need a .png or a .gif.
I agree with Rob, never do any compression or resizing of images in Flash .Prepare the image of the correct file type and exact physical dimensions (as it will be used in Flash) before importing into Flash... use PhotoShop or whatever.
There is no free lunch... If your image is physically very large 1000+ x 1000+.... and you want high quality, it's going to be a pretty large file.
Since we have no examples of what size you think is too large, what quality is good/bad, or what the image dimensions are... we can only offer limited advice.
Correctly designing the project from the start is also very important. you might not be able to use a 1680 x 700 background image (too large a file), so you might look into using a much small image and tiling, that is repeating the same small image over and over... for example. So besides "image compression", there are design methods that can help reduce the final Flash file size.
    Best wishes,
    Adninjastrator

  • Photoshop Timeline View

How do you switch frome frame view to timeline view with annimation?

    Hello there!
To bring up the timeline, go to Window > Timeline, as shown below.
This will bring up the Timeline window, also shown below. Note: the timeline panel is empty, as I do not have a animation set up.
To learn more about animating with Photoshop i have also embedded the video:
