Photoshop Killer

So first of all, I know this shouldn't be in the MacBook Pro thread, but I couldn't find a thread that was specific for my problem.
My question is, is there a real Photoshop killer application out there?
I have tried Pixelmator, but I don't like the palette based UI and the autosave feature drives me crazy.
Acorn is too simple and lacks needed features.
Gimp has too many bugs and won't work with Lion.
Seashore lacks needed features.
Photoshop Elements is too simple and again lacks needed features.
Is there an application other than these that will be similar to Photoshop?
I would prefer one that costs less than 100 dollars.
I mainly do graphic design and not photo editing.
Thanks,
NWB1

It depends on what you mean by "similar to Photoshop." Photoshop can do a lot of really obscure but powerful things for specific professional uses (like editing CMYK for press output, handling up to 32 bits per channel for HDR and advanced imaging, or pixel aspect ratio adjustment for broadcast television), and because of those features, there's absolutely nothing similar at under $100.
If you just need a simple pixel editor for graphic design, there are lots of choices, but it seems like you tried the usual list of popular editors and don't like them. I'm not sure what's left under $100. If you are a student, the educational discount on Photoshop is pretty big and is a great way to get it for cheap.

  • Problem: Adobe CC deployment of Photoshop kills Explorer.exe

    Hello,
I have created several deployment packages lately via the Creative cloud packager. They are deployed via SCCM and when both InDesign and Illustrator have been working fine while Photoshop kills the Explorer.exe under the deployment.
The explorer.exe does not come back automatically and have to be started via task manager.
I also created a package that includes several programs, among them Photoshop and the same happens with it.
Note: Photoshop do complete the installation and are working correctly.
Is there anyone that have encountered this problem before, and do anyone have a solution for it?

Oh so it is not just me then.  I have this issue and other than doing what you do and starting explorer.exe back up no solution.  As you say the install completes fine and as I build Adobe into our image it is not really a big issue to do this once every six months.

  • Copying Bitmaps from Photoshop to Flash

There are a few things I really miss or find quite annoying when copying Bitmaps from Photoshop to Flash.
Life could be so much easier, but well, as so often, it isn't, because:
Why is the alpha channel discarded? I mean you can copy whole Ilustrator-Selections to Flash, but you can't copy an alpha channel in a bitmap from Photoshop
What about this (stupid) dpi-inclusion? Flash is a pixel-based application. It does not really help if you find a bitmap in the flash IDE library which natively has odd dimensions like 273.45 x 81.28 and you aren't able to change that in the properties. you could as well just delete this bitmap again, because bitmaps with odd dimensions and DPI don't really help in Flash (well this may be another case with bitmaps which are a part of a whole collection like when importing AI-content. But for a single bitmap?)
Is there at least an option to turn-of the DPI-conversion for single Bitmaps?
I think otherwise the DPI settings for the flash document and the settings in the PSD document should match. But that would be really tedious.
I always use a freeware program like irfanview to lose the extra DPI information which is just a big annoyance in many situations.
    Well, that's about it

No, sort of. If you can live with the text EXACTLY as it is in
Photoshop, kill all the layer except the text and save as PDF from
Photoshop. Place the PDF in InDesign and it will retain its vector
properties and formatting. You will not be able to edit anything.

  • Copying text from Photoshop to InDesign

    Dear InDesign Community,
I am working on updating a 60 page .pdf which was is extremelly blurry and unsearchable because each page was individually created in Photoshop (CS6) at size 8.5x11 and then put into a 6x7 sized document via Microsoft Publisher ( I weep as I write this sentene). I am currently rebuilding the file in InDesign and I was wondering if there was any way to copy and paste the formatted text from Photoshop cs6 to Indesign cs6 without losing the formatting. The end product is supposed to be a good quality pdf for web that is also a searchable document. Please advise.

  • Video Podcasts Won't Play under 7.3.2.6

Just installed new itunes and quick time and numerous previously downloaded and newly downloaded video podcasts won't play. You can see the opening frame on the small screen at bottom left if you click but when you try to play, the screen goes green, purple or other color and starts to vertically roll (like old tvs used to do) with foggy images. Strangely other video podcasts (old and new)do play. One example of podcast that does not play is Photoshop Killer Tips; one that does play is Adobe Photoshop Quick Tips.
Computer has plenty of space and has been cleaned of temporary files, defragged, etc.

And this is when going to videos-->video podcasts, right? Do they even show up there at all?

  • Creative Cloud 1.8.0.447 update seems to kill Photoshop CC 2014

I been using Photoshop CC 2014 on a Macbook Pro 17" since it was released without incident (system was running 10.9.4, now 10.9.5; it has 16 gigs ram and a 500 mb SSD).  In the last few days, I updated Creative Cloud to 1.8.0.447, and that seems to have killed Photoshop CC 2014 (the most recent version--I keep it up to date).
When starting Photoshop CC 2014, I receive an error that the program failed to initialize due to a program error.  This happens the majority of the time (85%+).  I tried uninstalling and reinstalling Photoshop CC 2014, but that made no difference.  The only way around this seems to be pressing Command+Option+Shift while starting Photoshop, at which point I lose my settings (and it's not practical for me to keep reapplying my settings).  This was occurring under OS X 10.9.4, and I figured I had nothing to lose by upgrading to 10.9.5 (which I did last night).  However, I continue receiving the error and having to wipe out settings in order to start Photoshop.
I've checked the PSErrorLog.txt file for when the error occurs, and it reads:
    2014:10:08 20:53:13 : /Volumes/workarea/PS_15_Mac_Daily_Retail/20140926.r.236/photoshop/main/photoshop/sources/ PSOWLListenerProxyBase.cpp : 54 : REQUIRE failed
I've further narrowed down the problem to the switching graphics cards.  When the system is forced into the AMD Radeon HD 6750M graphic card, Photoshop starts.  When it has to switch between the Intel HD Graphics 3000 adapter the AMD Radeon, Photoshop seems to choke on itself.
For whatever reason, Photoshop CC seems not to have been impacted by the Creative Cloud update, and it continues to work.  I'm seriously considering downgrading back to Photoshop CC until such time as Photoshop CC 2014 is stable again.
Does anyone have any suggestions for correcting the failure to initialize error so that I don't have to reapply my settings repeatedly?

I was able to resolve the issue by going into File>Project Settings>General and changing the Render from GPU Acceleration (OpenCL) to Software Only. It appears there is an issue with the AMD FirePro D500 graphics card. I was told by a call tech at Adobe that there are issues with the D300, D500, and D700 Graphics cards. However, I have an Intel Iris graphics card on my MacBook Pro and was having the same transparency issue. So, I'm skeptical that the issue is just with the graphics card. The transparency issue did not start on BOTH computers until the latest CC upgrade. For now, the Software Only renderer option fixes the issue. I hope to see a fix in the next CC update. FYI: The Renderer needs to be changed to Software Only in both Premiere Pro Project Settings and Media Encoder Preferences.

  • [poll:] does your Photoshop suffer from gammut-mapping-killer-bug ?

    Hi everyone.
It only takes 15 seconds. There is a simple and quick way to verify whether or not your Photoshop does gammut mapping (which is needed to see accurate colors on your display).
(Maybe you find it interesting for yourself, but at least you would certainly do me a big favour. If you use a Mac, skip to the bottom.)
    Here's the test:
    1) open any image with "normal" colors (e.g. red tomatoes, but any image is fine) in Photoshop.
    2) download the attached file colorspin.icm and set it as your monitor profile.* That's it!
*(control panel >> display >> settings >> advanced >> color management >> add... >> set as default >> apply)
Results: Your picture can now look either "normal" (e.g. red tomatoes) or have completely absurd colors (e.g. blue tomatoes).
I'd like to do a little poll here (so for comments, etc. please start a new thread!).
I'd be thankful if you could briefly post your results here, that is to say:
    normal colors or false colors
    version of OS and Photoshop
are you using (1) a notebook's internal display (2) a desktop PC with standalone monitor (3) a notebook together with standalone monitor and internal monitor switched off or (4) a dual-monitor-setup ? If you are interested or have the time, you can try different situations, as they can have an impact on the outcome (that's the case for me unfortunately).
I'll update this thread with a summary and an explanation, once there are enough results posted here, so check back later on. I'm trying to find out if there is a bug (either in Windows or in Photoshop) which kills the gammut mapping. There is no need to test this on Macs, as they don't have issues with this. So if you are a Mac user, please don't post your results (unless you unexpectedly suffer from this bug, too).
So, that's it. Thanks for reading and happy testing! I'm looking forward to seeing your results

And here are my own results:
    MacBook Pro (dual boot)
    on Photoshop CS 4
    Os X + internal display
    okay
    Win XP + internal display
    bug
    Dell Inspiron notebook
    XP(SP2) +  Photoshop CS3
    dual monitor set-up
    okay
    only external monitor
    bug
    only internal monitor

  • Can I  kill services running behind photoshop?

I can see the following services running behind photoshop even after exiting the application.
    VulcanMessageCmd.exe*32
    CS6ServiceManager.exe*32
    SwitchBoard.exe*32
Can I force close them while bridge or photoshop running? This is my requirement in app-v because when I exit the bridge, photoshop these processes run behind which doesn't allow my virutal bubble to shutdown.
So please suggest if I can close all these processes even if photoshop is running?
Actually I killed these processes from task manager but didn't affect photoshop application. But just want to make sure force closing these processes wont break the running application.
    Thanks,
    Venkat.

No risk in shutting them down when your environment is closed, anyway. They're just helper bunnies that provide access to web services and the Adobe ID and manage updates.

  • Latest Secuity Update kills twain support in Photoshop

After installing the latest security update, Photoshop Elements 3 crashes at launch when it gets to "Building Twain Menu..."
Others have had the same problem and I found a work around on MacFixIt: move the twain plugin out of the Plugins folder. This kills the Import From Twain Device function so you'll have to use ImageCapture, EpsonScan, VueScan or another utility to scan.
    iMac 2.16Ghz 20" Intel Core 2 Duo   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   Epson CX5000 All-In-One

I don't think this is specific to the security update. The Adobe TWAIN driver is notoriously buggy and ditching it has long been one of Adobe's solutions for when the program won't launch at all. Most scanners that allow you to do this have their own scanner plug-ins (Like canon) that supersede this one anyway. It's really no big deal.

  • 10.4.9 killed photoshop CS2 on my quad!

it opens ok, but when i try and open a file it freezes and never recovers. even after reboots.
    anyone else having this issue?

I just tried it and no problems here. However I'm using CS3 now and I would suggest trying that.
Photoshop CS3 Beta is available for all registered users of CS2. It works very well with a few features missing.

  • Photoshop CS6 Type tool kills arrow keys

When using the standard type tool, periodically, the keyboard arrow keys will not work. You can manually change your selection point, but not by using the left of right arrow.

  • Photoshop Elements + :30 mins kills Keyboard entries

    Head scratcher d'Jour:
When I am using Photoshop Elements 10, after twenty minutes, the wired USB apple keyboard (A-1242) stops entering alphabetic keyboard characters into any word fields. This applies to any fields in P/S such as file names or typography in an image.
At the same time, the keyboard will not enter alphabetic characters in any document field anywhere on the iMac. It WILL execute commands using the Command key but without that modifier, the keyboard remains paralyzed for alphabetic input.
    I have 4GB ram
    The trackball works normally.
Swapping USB ports doesn't fix the issue.
Restarting is the only thing that fixes the problem, temporarily. The problem returns again after another 20 minutes using P/S Elements. If Elements 10 is closed, there is no problem at all, ever.:
Resetting the PRAM hasn't fixed the problem, it still looses keyboard inputs after a long rest. (Cursor continues to move and cursor commands work fine.
SMC reset 2-3 times in succession only fixes the problem for about 20 minutes.
A different Apple USB (older) keyboard works fine when the A1242 has temporarily died.
Something dies (with time) between the A1242 and the iMac and requires rebooting to temporarily fix.
    Any thoughts dearly appreciated.
    Many thanks

    Thanks BDAqua,  for the suggestions:
I'm a little intimidate by the contents of the Console's departments. But, the next time the Keyboard goes south when P/S is loaded, I'll see if I can find anything at that time. Thanks.
Regarding the International prefs, I remember that from my Tiger system but I cannot find it here in Lion's prefs. I can't locate anything that shows the key entry options.
I know there is a Character Viewer  in my  SpellCatcher program, tho.
Do you know where that System pref might be hiding in my Lion?
    Many thanks

  • Latest Leopard Security Update Kills Photoshop 7?

Yesterday installed the latest security update on iBook G4. Today Photoshop 7.0 won't open, giving an error message that reads, +An unexpected and unrecoverable problem has occurred because of a program error. Photoshop will now exit+.
Coincidence? It never happened before the update installation. Reinstalled Photoshop...same result. Any ideas anyone? TIA

Apparently, there is a fundamental Leopard/Photoshop conflict, up to and including Photoshop CS2. Here's a thread at Adobe's site:
    http://www.adobeforums.com/webx/[email protected]@
This is not a happy situation, and had I known, I would not have gone to Leopard. A message on the above thread indicates Adobe is aware of the problem, but no fixes are imminent.
