Photoshop Levels/Brightness & Contrast Problem (PS CS2)

When I try to apply Levels & or Brightness & Contrast settings to an image, it always seems to revert back to the way it was. The filters won't do anything it seems. I have Adobe Photoshop CS2. At home it did the same thing and I re-installed Photoshop only to find out it still did not work. Is there something I am forgetting to do? Your help will be much appreciated!!!
Eric

View your image at 100% (Actual Pixels) when making adjustments.
(And I'm going to take a wild guess that you are working on a line drawing or scanned half-tone image.)

  • Brightness/Contrast Problem in CS3 & CS2

When I adjust (using legacy option) the sliders, then hit okay, the adjustments don't apply, and the image reverts to it's original state as if I hadn't adjusted the contrast or brightness at all. It did this in both CS3 & CS2. Has anyone else had this problem before?
My workaround was to make a B/C adjustment layer and then merge visible to a new layer, but it did the exact same thing. The new merged layer didn't have the B/C applied to it. This is very strange.

We should move on but calling someone rude because they misunderstood something and made a poor judgement is uncalled for.
Moving on I think that the advice to use curve instead of B?C would offer better control
As to why the adjustment layer you used did not have an effect as expected there may have been a small selection active when you invoked the layers adjustment everything seem to work but it is is only being applied to what might be a very small selection. Perhaps one you are accidentally creating. Check to see if you have a selection tool active and watch how you are moving the cursor.
I hold the stylus in a funny way and sometimes make a selection and swear i am not touching the tablet with the stylus but on more careful observation or by just hitting escape or command D and then making the adjustment all is well.
This might not be your problem but it is the only one I can think of at the moment.
if this is the problem keep in mind this is not really a photoshop problem or solution and an unlikely scenario, even though it is a possible one.
No one here would be expected to know this and of course it can be quite off base.

  • Brightness/Contrast problems

I've noticed when I watch some dvds on my comp that the dark areas are much darker than they should be, sometimes to the point that I can't make out characters that are on the screen, these are parts that are clearly visible on a normal tv.
I've been to 2 websites that show value gradients for calibration, and I noticed that between 0 and about 15 percent looks completely black, so I'm losing that much value range in those areas.
When I calibrate the screen, if I brighten it to see the dark areas then the brights become far too bright. When I go into the calibration it shows the apple that you're supposed to match up with in value, when I do all that the screen becomes much too bright again.
I'm using the sRGB 2.1 profile since it's the most widely used, the default eMac profile is also way too bright. Also, in the first step of the calibration it says to adjust the brightness and contrast until the oval is barely visible, when I have these sliders all the way up as bright as can be I still can't see the oval, which makes the calibration process a little difficult when I can't even pull off the first step with accuracy.
Is there anything I can do about this?, is there an application that will help me adjust just the black point without making the whole screen brighter? Thanks in advance.

    update
I found a shareware application called SuperCal that did the trick, I managed to keep the 2.2 gamma that pc users have while not making things too dark or bright, the black and white points are leveled out now so the gradient bars on test pages look good now. Thanks anyways guys .

  • Adjust Levels/Brightness/Contrast on 200pp PDF

I have a PDF document of scanned documents and all the scans are under-exposed. I need to adjust levels/contrast/brightness on all the pages. For a start I want to apply the same set of changes to every page of the PDF. I'll then place the PDF pages onto InDesign Pages and Print as a booklet to get pagination for sadle stiching using the included Applescript.
Is there and automated way I can process all the pages in PS and apply a standard set of changes to all the pages and then save the document including the page number so as I can reassemble as a single document in Acrobat to then import to InDesign using the aforementioned Applescript?

You could creat an action to do the required changes and use http://www.scriptsrus.talktalk.net/Pdfprocessor.htm to run the action on all the pages.

  • Exposure vs. Levels vs. Brightness/Contrast Adjustment Layers?

I have some photos that are a bit underexposed and I'm trying to brighten them up a bit and I made a Levels adjustment layer and also experimented with the Exposure adjustment layer. Are these essentially doing the same thing OR are there reasons to have a Levels adjustment layer along with an exposure one and a Brightness/Contrast one?
    Thanks in advance.

The Exposure adjustment in Photoshop is primarily meant to correct tonal values of High Dynamic Range images, which are 32 bits. This command makes tonal adjustments using a linear color space or gamma instead of your image’s color space.  You can use it on 8 bit or 16 bit images too, but the adjustments may seem rather drastic.
When rescuing poorly exposed 8 bit or 16 bit images, I prefer Levels or Curves because you have greater control.  Brightness/Contrast, isn't something I use much.

  • I'm having problems with CS2 (mainly illustrator and photoshop

I'm having problems with CS2 (mainly illustrator and photoshop ) randomly shutting down while trying to save a file. Reformatted my laptop for fear of a virus and reloaded... I have gotten nowhere.
    Please Help!

CS3 still had issues with the preferences becoming corrupt, so a possible workaround would be to reset the preferences.
The file is called AIPrefs and is located under 'Documents and Settings/User/Application Data/Adobe/Adobe Illustrator CS3 Settings'. It is a hidden file. Delete it with Illustrator closed and when you launch the program again the file will be rebuilt.
May be it is also sounds like you need more memory for your computer. If you can navigate to your computer's memory controls, and allow your operating system to use a portion of your hard disk drive (HDD) as RAM (maybe 2Gb or so) it may solve your issue.
How is about: http://www.filerepairforum.com/forum/adobe/adobe-aa/illustrator/383-%E2%80%8Bcorrupted-fon ts-in-illustrator-file-urgent-help-need – resource has non-commercial specialty
Third party software Illustrator Repair Kit also must be good solution
It has free demo version at:- http://www.illustrator.repair/
    Hope this will be helpful.

  • The 'Brightness/Contrast' dialogue screen becomes unexplainably absent in PhotoShop 7.0 on XP

About every year of so the 'Brightness/Contrast' screen becomes unexplainably absent while using my PhotoShop 7.0 in XP. When I click on 'Brightness/Contrast' the eyedropper becomes active as usual but the dialog screen with the two 'sliders' for brightness and contrast is not visible. Where is it? If I uninstall and reinstall it's OK again for a while.

It's not unheard of for dialogs to become lost off screen. It can happen
when you reconfigure your display rez, or rearrange monitors.
Before you re-install (assuming this happens again), try resetting your
prefs by pressing the ctrl-alt-shift keys during startup.

  • Image / Adjustments: Brightness/Contrast. Why is it crap now?

Ever since we got CS3, I have to hit the "Legacy" button in the Brightness/Contrast to get decent results. I just tried again WITHOUT using the Legacy button to enhance a scan a little. I brightened it up a few notches and then dragged the contrast bar and NOTHING happened. Whats that about? I hit the Legacy button and do my adjustments and it works as it should. Am I missing something?

  • Photoshop's brightness and exposure controls?

Can anyone explain the difference(s) between Photoshop's brightness control and its exposure control?
    Thanks,

Did it ever occur to you to consult the documentation, Mark. Say, the User Guide and/or the Help files?
    Exposure command
Adjusts tonality by performing calculations in a linear color space. Exposure is primarily for use in HDR images. See Adjust Exposure for HDR image.
    Adjust Exposure for HDR images
    Comments (0)
The Exposure adjustment is designed for making tonal adjustments to HDR images, but it works with 8‑bit and 16‑bit images. Exposure works by performing calculations in a linear color space (gamma 1.0) rather than the current color space.
    1. Do one of the following:
Click the Exposure icon or an Exposure preset in the Adjustments panel.
Choose Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Exposure.
Note: You can also choose Image > Adjustments > Exposure. But keep in mind that this method makes direct adjustments to the image layer and discards image information. Adjustment layers for 32-bit images are available in Photoshop Extended only.
    2. In the Adjustments panel, set any of the following options:
    Exposure
Adjusts the highlight end of the tonal scale with minimal effect in the extreme shadows.
    Offset
Darkens the shadows and midtones with minimal effect on the highlights.
    Gamma
Adjusts the image gamma, using a simple power function. Negative values are mirrored around zero (that is, they remain negative but still get adjusted as if they are positive).
The eyedroppers adjust the luminance values of images (unlike the Levels eyedroppers that affect all color channels).
The Set Black Point eyedropper sets the Offset, shifting the pixel you click to zero.
The Set White Point eyedropper sets the Exposure, shifting the point you click to white (1.0 for HDR images).
The Midtone eyedropper sets the Exposure, making the value you click middle gray.

    Apply the Brightness/Contrast adjustment
    Comments (0)
The Brightness/Contrast adjustment lets you make simple adjustments to the tonal range of an image. Moving the brightness slider to the right increases tonal values and expands image highlights, to the left decreases values and expands shadows. The contrast slider expands or shrinks the overall range of tonal values in the image.
In normal mode, Brightness/Contrast applies proportionate (nonlinear) adjustments to image layer, as with Levels and Curves adjustments. When Use Legacy is selected, Brightness/Contrast simply shifts all pixel values higher or lower when adjusting brightness. Since this can cause clipping or loss of image detail in highlight or shadow areas, using Brightness/Contrast in Legacy mode is not recommended for photographic images (but can be useful for editing masks or scientific imagery).
Note: Use Legacy is automatically selected when editing Brightness/Contrast adjustment layers created with previous versions of Photoshop.
    1. Do one of the following:
Click the Brightness/Contrast icon in the Adjustments panel.
Choose Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Brightness/Contrast. Click OK in the New Layer dialog box.
Note: You can also choose Image > Adjustments > Brightness/Contrast. But keep in mind that this method makes direct adjustments to the image layer and discards image information.
    2. In the Adjustments panel, drag the sliders to adjust the brightness and contrast.
Dragging to the left decreases the level, and dragging to the right increases it. The number at the right of each slider reflects the brightness or contrast value. Values can range from ‑150 to +150 for Brightness, ‑50 to +100 for Contrast.

  • Set default Settings for Brightness/Contrast Slider

I am in the throes of editing several hundred pictures. My camera has a standard tendency toward too bright and not enough contrast. While editing about a hundred pictures in Photoshop Elements 3.0 last night, the brightness/Contrast and Shadow highlight slider suddenly retained the last setting - which GREATLY enhanced my editing efficiency! Alas, today it is back to normal - the Brightness/Contrast slider default is 0 for it's associated sliders and the Shadow Highlight option is again at 50%/0/0 for the three associated sliders.
Is there a way to set a default value for the associated sliders for each of these?
(I had installed Photoshop Elements 5.0 on a trial basis up until yesterday and also have Photoshop Elements 4.0 installed, but it is such a hassle to use, I just gave up on it (and 5.0 has the same issue as 4.0 - no concurrent file browser when editing.))

Can't help you with Shadows/Highlights, but you do have an option with Brightness/Contrast. Instead of going to Enhance>Adjust Lighting>Brightness/Contrast, go to Layer>New Adjustment Layer>Brightness/Contrast instead. Once you've established the parameters you want for Brightness and Contrast, you can open up additional pictures and drag-and-drop the adjustment layer onto each new picture, retaining the settings from the first adjustment. This also allows you to quickly tweak the settings on the succeeding pictures, as adjustment layers can be readjusted ad infinitum.
If only Shadows/Highlights had an adjustment layer option...

It has stopped crashing because somehow it turned off "Enable GL Drawing" on its own because I could never even get a menu open.  Not sure how it did that but I am grateful.  I still get the error when I open Photoshop up but at least it hasn't crashed yet.  At the time when it was crashing I never would have been able to get you the system info due to the speed that it was crashing upon just opening the program.  In case you still need it:

  • Applying brightness/contrast effect doesn't work

I have a project in the correct format on a properly formatted external drive. When I apply the brightness/contrast effect the red progress bar appears and the hard drive works for several minutes while the bar fills. But when it's over, the effect is not applied and the clip looks the same.
I have closed and restarted iMovie and tried again and I have trashed the Font Collections folder.
Any further help would be appreciated.

Like everyone else here, I'm just an iMovie user who volunteers to help answer questions.
Unfortunately, recent changes to the Discussion software introduced bugs that make it very difficult to reply to user questions. Despite assurances by Forum administrators, these bugs are not being fixed.
This is to ask that you contact Apple, suggesting that additional resources be allocated to fixing the Discussion software. Hopefully your support will encourage Apple to address these problems.
Here's the man who should be able to get some action:

I plan to include this message in postings until the issues are resolved.
Have you tried disabling any third-party QuickTime add-ons or iMovie plug-ins installed on your computer? If something is messing up QuickTime that could cause iMovie to fail to render properly.
There's more info here, including where to look for them:

  • Difference in video brightness/contrast across viewer applications

I am using FCP->Color>FCP roundtrip to grade Red footage. After I grade the clips in Color and send them back to FCP, I see a difference in brightness/contrast of the graded clips when playing in FCP. And when I export the final output to quicktime and play it in quicktime player, I see further difference in brightness and contrast. Essentially the clips appear darker when played in QT player. Now I am confused as to which application is showing the correct brightness/gamma level? Is there a way to make all the applications play the video at same/true brightness/gamma? Any insights would be highly appreciate. Thanks!
    -Pranab

There is a distinction between PCIe-based GPUs and I/O cards that you have to be aware of. COLOR's user interface, render/scopes and output are split between the two. A graphics processor handles the user interface (PCIe is better, application won't run on on-board integrated or AGP), and actual grade values for judgement are based on a PCIe HD-SDI I/O card like AJA Kona3, or Blackmagic (Intensity?) which are NOT graphics cards, they are video interfaces.
For GPUs, if the application is running, that's a good indicator. However, preferred cards have been evolving over the past 5 years. My first system was configured with a Quadro 4500FX which was a total waste of money. I deliberately chose an ATI X1900XT for the next tower, which was a significant improvement. My third MacPro is running fine with the default ATI 2600HD, which is as plain vanilla as you can get. Some users report speed advantages with the newer 4870 series, but I fail to see significant differences -- COLOR in its current delivery will never deliver "real-time" preview playback on any card, and it still takes a very long time to render, in comparison with some other grade offerings. Fourth machine, I'm still deciding, but it would be great if Apple got the FX4000 thing happening, and I'll get to that.
Nvidia does suffer from some bit-depth processing issues in that it does not directly support 10-bit codecs, but can be switched into the more intensive "float" mode. It also has some other transient issues.
Looking outside Apple COLOR, consider that Blackmagic Resolve ("DaVinci") is predicated entirely on nVidia's CUDA-processing technology and is restricted to implementation on 2 or 3 very specific cards, as opposed to the FCP-centred, but ATI/AJA-leaning Apple solution, which, although somewhat restricted, is 90% more likely to run on almost anything PCIe that you can stick into a MacPro. However, the color science and cross-platform (AVID support, for example) that DaVinci offers makes it very tempting, and that's why I'm paying a lot more attention to nVidia these days.
If you are looking for HDSDI PCIe cards, then AJA, with IO, Kona3, and so on definitely has the edge and can extend capabilities up to and beyond 2K processing, but many users select other solutions that suit their individual needs -- not everyone delivers theatrical Digital Cinema or needs to.

  • Brightness/Contrast edit tool messes up my clips.HELP!

When I try to apply brightness/contrast to my iMovie 6.0.3 video clips (because so many of them end up much darker on iMovie than on my camcorder), it helps with the brightness, but after the rendering is done, my clip is messed up in 2 ways: 1) the sound is mainly gone, except for a few jerky sounds here and there; 2) visually, the clip is now jerky--like it's both in slow motion and being fast forwarded at the same time, if that makes sense. I've tried again and again, looked for advice all over the internet, to no avail, and wonder if it's just a glitch in my software and if so, what to do about it? (I did download an update on 6.0 from the Apple site, but it didn't help). Thanks!!

    Hi Z
    As Catspaw writes.
The Brightness & Contrast tool in iM6 should work - a new account is a smart way to test
    where the problem originate.
This tool in iMovie HD 6 - is crude and hard to use/get a good result with.
In iMovie'08 - this is one of the few things that is a real improvment but the loss
of so much other tools results in a useless situation (as Catspaw - I don't nearly use it)
    Solution: FinalCut Express 4
    • Superb tools to correct brigtness, contrast and colors
    • So much more
    Cons
    • COST - It's not free but price is reduced with 30% after introduction of iMovie'08
    • Some new learning. Mainly in starting up (setting up scratch discs & Capturing process)
Some says steap learning curve - there is a step but mainly there are so much new
tools so it's really to learn as You progress with Your movie.
    Yours Bengt W
