Photoshop locking up

Often when I come to save a file, generally a JPG, it reaches the save box then the program locks up, the only way forward is to clost the program down using Task Manager and reopening photoshop - Any ideas ?

With weird problems reset preferences.  Start PS and immediately hold down ctrl/alt/shift keys.  If fast enough you will get a reset window.
Hope this helps.

  • Photoshop locks when I open a file

I have CS5 and CS6.  I had downloaded FontExplorer X but subsequently uninstalled it because I was not using it.  Then the problems started... if I missed the little dialogue box that would pop up when I opened a file, PS would be locked.  So I went to my plugin folder and deleted the folder for FontExplorer X all together.  Now I can't even get a file to open in PS; it just locks and I can't do anything but end task from my task manager.
I am running Windows 7 on a PC.  How can I get this plugin gone once and for all?  I tried to go to Edit>Preferences>Plugins but without opening a file (which locks PS) I can't get to that menu choice.
    Please help.

You may have to simply uninstall Photoshop altogether, then delete the remaining application folder as it may contain support files for FontExplorer. Then reinstall and try again.

  • Photoshop locks up trying to recover a file

Earlier, I was working on a photo with many layers and tried to switch to mask mode when it locked up.  After an hour of waiting for it finish, I finally terminated PS via Windows task manager.  Now, every time I go to start PS, it tries to recover the image and keeps locking up.  I tried restarting my computer but it's still doing it.  It doesn't lock up the whole computer but I need to finish the work.  I have accepted the fact that I will have to start all over with the image, now I just want to get back at it.  I am using PS CC on Windows 7.
    Thanks for any help.

I think that documents file may be a goner.  If you want to recover that file first try resetting your preferences to see if Photoshop starts.  If Photoshop still hangs you need to move the recovery PSB files out of your Photoshop recovery folder.  Photoshop should start  then you can try to open the PSB files you moved out of Photoshop recovery folders one at a time to see in any can be recovered,   Each user ID the uses Photoshop should had a autorecover folder for the Photoshop versions the user ID has used.

  • CS5 Suite Errors and  CS 5  Photoshop locked

I have just installed CS5 suite, with these errors
1/ Indesign fails to open, just crashes, issues a crash report
2/ Illustrator crashes when closing, but does seem to work, issues a crash report
3/ Photoshop CS 5 error when changing workspace,  Could not apply the workspace because the file is locked or you do not have the necessary access privileges. Use the ‘Get Info’ command in the Finder to unlock the file or change permissions on the file or enclosing folders.
And this error when saving the file , Could not save Preferences because the file is locked or you do not have the necessary access privileges. Use the ‘Get Info’ command in the Finder to unlock the file or change permissions on the file or enclosing folders.
My system is OS X 10.6.3, good clean 10 month install, running on 2008 Mac Pro 8 core
I also have CS3 suite installed,  all apps are OK
Very disappointed with the CS 5,
Does any one have any ideas, with three apps that have errors, I did try to set the CS5 settings folder with my permissions. Below is a link I found on this site , however it did not work
Navigate to /Users/YOURUSERNAME/Library/Preferences/Adobe Photoshop CS5 Settings
    Select that file File>Get Info
At the very bottom under permissions, hit the + icon.
Add your user name from the list that pops up.
    Highlight the user just added.
Click the gear icon to the right of the +/-
    Choose make owner.
Click the gear icon again and choose apply to folder contents.
    Open Photoshop.
    Regards

I was able to fix this stupidity by deleting the following:
    Quit Photoshop.
Goto your home - assume you're home is named john.
john/Library/Preferences and delete a folder named: "Adobe Photoshop CS5 Settings"
Launch Photoshop again and make a change to preferences.
Quit.  It should not give that error again.
You will see a new folder there with the same name, but this time, it's OK.  Also notice inside are now 10 items.
The one you trashed is empty, because the difference is that the permissions on the original folder are showing:
    Old one:
    System r/w
    wheel  r/w
    everyone  r
    The new one will be:
    john (me)  r/w
    wheel   r
    everyone  r

  • Photoshop "locked"?!

    Hi Guys
Having run an update (not my first), and downloaded a PS update and a Camera Raw update, Everytime I open photoshop now I get a message during the "initialisation" phase saying - Could not initialise Photoshop because the file is locked. Use the "properties" command in Windows explorer to unlock the file - The closest thing I can find is the read only function which I have unticked byt still it pops up. Does anyone understand whqt is going on?!?!
    Lightroom still opens fine.....
    Cheers Guys

Try resetting your preferences as described in the FAQ.
    http://www.adobeforums.com/webx/.ef4a07f/1
You either have to physically delete (or rename) the preference files or, if using the Alt, Ctrl, and Shift method, be sure that you get a confirmation dialog.
This resets all settings in Photoshop to factory defaults.
A complete uninstall/re-install will not affect the preferences and a corrupt file there may be causing the problem.

  • Photoshop locked in Leopard and unable to unlock

Since upgrade to leopard I have been having issues opening files and applications, as they are locked. I go to the "Get Info" command in the finder and unlock the file using password etc. I do this by clicking on the padlock and after using my password the padlock opens, then when I go to open PS3 it says it is locked and when I go back in the padlock is locked again....Anyone have any idea how I can unlock this so I can use PS3 and Bridge.
BTW, I was able to open Bridge, but it crashed and now it is locked and I cannot unlock it......
    Many thanks.

Just EXACTLY what do you mean by "the applications itself is locked"? Do mean that when you do GetInfo on:
    "/Applications/Adobe Photoshop CS/Adobe Photoshop CS.app"
there is a check mark in the GetInfo panel? And a lock icon on the application? In other words, does it look like this:
    http://homepage.mac.com/francines/.Public/locked.jpg
If it does, what happens when you click the box in front of locked? Actually, if the permissions show that you are the owner, and the group is staff, you shouldn't even have to click the padlock at the bottom. I can lock and unlock the application just by clicking on the box. If you can't, it makes me wonder just EXACTLY how you upgraded to Leopard. There can be a raft of very technical ownership/group problems, depending on what you did.

  • Photoshop lock layer; how to unlock?

one layer in a photoshop document has a padlock on it; no clue how it got there. I can't make it go away; perhaps the method is different in CS6 than in previous versions...
Any clue about this? I can't fill a selection on this particular layer...don't  know why. The layer in question IS selected, and the selection is active, etc.
    w

Admittedly the transparent lock is rarely seen, but notice your little brush icon is now active.  You've partially locked the layer (specifically, you've locked the image pixels).  Just click that brush icon and you should be in business.
See this page for what the various lock icons do.

  • Copying to Photoshop locks up AI & PS for 5 minutes

I have CS3 and a few weeks ago out of the blue I started having this problem with Illustrator where if I copy something and Photoshop is open, both of them lock up for a long time, like 3-5 minutes. I tried deleting my preferences, then I removed all of CS3 and reinstalled, but it's still doing it.
I also sometimes have a problem saving in Illustrator - it gives me the "Can't save the illustration" error that is common. They both started happening at the same time.
I'm on XP with 4gb of ram (shows as 3.25) and have 20gb free space on my HD.

I switched the default to Adobe PDF, then completely removed all printers, but it is still exhibiting the same behavior.

  • Photoshop locked to "Typekit is off"

I've been unable to enable TypeKit in Photoshop CC 2014. Whenever I load a .psd with unsynced fonts, I'm prompted to sync from TypeKit but am unable to as "TypeKit is off".
So far I've deleted my preferences file, disabled and then after waiting a few minutes re-enabled TypeKit from the Creative Cloud desktop application, and restarted my computer.
    OSX 10.10.3
Creative Cloud and PS are both fully updated.
    Thanks

I'm sorry that you ran into trouble with this! Would you please check that you are also signed in to Creative Cloud from the Help menu in Photoshop?
If you are already signed in there, please try these steps to clear any "stale" Adobe ID session, and make sure that Photoshop can find your Typekit account information:
    1) sign out of Creative Cloud from the Photoshop Help menu
    2) restart Photoshop
    3) sign back in to Creative Cloud from the Photoshop Help menu
Let me know if that doesn't make any difference, and I will ask the Photoshop team what else could be causing this message.
    Thank you,

  • Could not save because file is locked

I have Photoshop CS6 and I have never had a problem with this before -
All of a sudden I am getting an error message when saving : " Could not save…because the file is locked, you do not have necessary access permissions, or another program is using the file. Use the ‘Get Info’ command in the Finder to ensure the file is unlocked and you have permission to access the file. If the problem persists, save the document to a different file or duplicate it in the Finder."
No other program is even open… I have quit every process I could in the Activity Monitor.
I have tried saving as a different file name and format, I have changed permissions for the Staff option on all of file folders.
I have even completely restarted my computer, but literally nothing has worked.
    Help!

No anti-virus software (they cause far more problems than they solve, at least on a semi-secure network), I don't leave Bridge running. iTunes is running, so is InerTrak (time tracking software)... so it has to be Spotlight or Time Machine unless Activity Monitor will lock files. Or it could be Quicksilver, which creates indices like Spotlight.
First thing I'm doing is adding all my hard drives to "Prevent Spotlight from searching these locations" and we'll see if this comes up again.
Could it be the Finder? Does the Finder lock the file while reading the thumbnail?
I'm surprised that there's no way to tell what process has locked the file.
OK, last bit: Why doesn't Photoshop lock the file when it's open so that other programs won't open it?

  • Adobe Creative Suite Premium All Re-install Except PhotoShop

I have been using Creative Suite Premium for over 4 years.  It was working fine until several days ago when Photoshop locked up.  After closing it, I have was not able to get Photoshop to run.  I have tried to uninstall and re-install the entire suite several times.  All of the programs in CS installed fine and I can open them and work in them, EXCEPT PhotoShop.  PhotoShop is the main program I use.  When I tried to install just PhotoShop, I got an error message that the serial number is invalid.  I re-checked and re-entered the serial number several times, but always got the same error message.  I don't understand whay happened in the first place and why the problem is only with PhotoShop.
I use PhotoShop on a daily basis with my job, so I need it to be up and running.  I am also on a limited income and budget and cannot afford to buy their expensive upgrades, nor should I have to since the program has been working fine all this time.
I tried the Tech suppport chat and after a lengthy wait and discussion, was told that Tech Support does support CS.  I know Adobe is trying to force me to spend hudnreds of dollars to upgrade, but if I am forced to buy new software, it won't be from Adobe.
Does anyone out there know of a solution to fix this?  Thanks.

Before uninstall/reinstalling any software always try to fix the preference file first. Reason is, if the file is corrupted, reinstalling the app will not fix it, as it assumes that you want to keep your prefered settings, hence preference file.
Most apps will recreate the file if it can not find it, but to be safe, moving the file to another location, will allow you to put it back if it does not recreate the file.

  • PSCS4 could not save because the file is locked or was left open

    Hello—
I'm getting this error a lot, maybe once out of every dozen attempts to save. This occurs on files that are indeed open... because I've opened them in Photoshop! I open the file, make a change, hit CMD-S and get this message.
The finder's info panel says that I have permission to read and write the file.
This happens with multiple file types, not just one file.
All my work is done locally. Not trying to load or save across a network or any such.
Any guesses what might be going on? Obviously it's easy to work around. I "Save As" and give it a new name, then later delete the old file and rename the new one. Still, it's annoying, especially after waiting 10 minutes for a save to complete on a large file, then having to start over.
    Thanks in advance!
    Steve

  • Photoshop CS4 "Freezes" when saving as a JPEG

I have been using Photoshop CS4 with SnowLeopard and my MacPro for months now without a problem. I save multiple images everyday, often as JPEGs for the Web. But today, out of the blue with nothing changing (no new updates, or plugins), Photoshop "locks up" when saving a JPEG. I can still move the curser arrow, but everything is dead and the file did not save. I have to hit ESC just to get PS back online. I can save other file types, no problem.
Has anyone experienced this? Any help or solutions? I have the latest version of PS CS4.
(Note: If I go under Save for Web & Devices I can save it as a JPEG, but seems like an less than timely run-around)

I have not experienced that problem, but with all unexplainable Photoshop-problems You might try trashing the prefs (after making sure all customized presets like Actions, Patterns, Brushes etc. have been saved and making a note of the Preferences You’ve changed) by pressing command-alt-shift on starting the program or starting from a new user-account.
System Maintenance (repairing permissions, purging PRAM, running cron-scripts, etc.) might also be beneficial.

  • PS CS4 could not save because the file is locked

I saw this post, my problem is very similar, but this solution does not solve my problem:
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/2121454#2121454
Everytime I try to save a photoshop file I get the "Could not save becasue this file is locked" -- and then I go to save again and it does save, becasue the file has disappeared from where I had originally saved it!
This is VERY irritating, as it is not happening EVERY time I try to save a photoshop file.
In reference to the previous post about this, I do not use Spotlight, and often I do not have anything else open when working on these photoshop files.
I am using CS4, and this occurs when saving files both on and off a server.
I am afraid I will at some point end up losing a file.
    Any suggestions?

  • Why does Photoshop CC not work on my copy of Windows 7?

I installed Photoshop CC from the Creative Cloud app on my Windows 7 machine.  The other apps in Creative Cloud seem to work OK, but Photoshop locks up from the splash screen.  Dead, no response to keyboard or mouse, I must use Task Manager to close Photoshop.  This is very disappointing.  Photoshop was the ONE app in Creative Cloud that I really need to work.  What is the solution?

    update your graphics card driver.
    restart your computer.
open your cc app, sign out and then back in.
    retest ps cc.
