Photoshop Menus Gray out.. again dispite 12.0.4 update

Hello,
There was a big issue with a photoshop gray out bug awhile back, where by all menu items went gray and the only alternative was to restart.  This was fixed with Photoshop's 12.0.1 update but I switched to a new computer and had to download the latest upgrade ..which is now 12.0.4 and it does nothing to stop this the old gray out bug.  It happens at least 3 times a day.  What can I do to fix this?

Ok it turns out 12.0.4 never installed..12.0.4 had install issues. I was still running 12.0 but I fixed that now so I think it'll be ok.  Without the update there was a grayout bug.  It happens after using Photoshop for a time.

  • Help please...All menus grayed out in CS4...

Premiere Pro used to work and a few weeks ago when I openned it, all of the menu items were grayed out and no editing panel or anything openned. I can't even quit the program. Literally everything is grayed out.
There is nothing I can do with it.  I have uninstalled the entire Master Collection using the Adobe Installers and double checked to make sure things were cleaned up by using the Creative Suite Cleaner Tool.I have also attempted to just reinstall Premiere Pro from the disks to no avail.
All other programs in the suite apprear to load and work fine. Only Premiere Pro CS4 does not work.
Any ideas on how to fix this issue? I really need to be able to use the program and can't yet afford to upgrade to CS5.5... so any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks guys!

Thanks Bill. No worries... Haa, haa. I should have asked MYSELF about the second monitor.
REALLY appreciate the help and care.
    Blessings bro.

The second monitor has been an issue with several programs. Photoshop is one too.
There is another thread, where a user was getting the "bing," that a window was open, but could not see it. Sure enough, it was on his second monitor, that had been disconnected. I should have asked if you had ever had a second monitor. I am the "dunce."
Glad that you located the problem and good luck,

  • Why are menus grayed-out in trial version? how can I use the effects then?

why are menus grayed-out in trial version? how can I use the effects then?

Every piece of software has a learning curve, and its own terminology.  After Effects is a complex professional tool, used by home enthusiasts right through to feature film makers.
There's plenty of very user friendly video editing software that will do the tasks you've mentioned easily.  Might I suggest Adobe Premiere Elements.
For the record, you can't apply an effect to anything in After Effects until you have selected a target layer in the timeline.  This functionality is true of any video editing or compositing software I can think of,

  • My sound bar is grayed out again

I have an early MBP 2009. Last week I lost control of my internal speakers and I can't adjust the volume from zero and the bar is grayed out. Last week I fixed it by running the last software update for 10.7. Now my sound bar is grayed out again. I am not sure what to do to fix this. I don't want to keep running the updater since it ttakes so long and I loose productivity.
Any suggestions? Is this a bug that needs fixed by Apple?

  • Fcp menus gray out for some reason

what does it mean if your menus gray out after a render (i have to force quit)?? i upgraded to tiger, is there conflict problem with fcp 4 in tiger? i don't remember having this problem in panther.
FCP 4.5 HD, latest quicktime, Mac OS 10.4.1, 1 gig memory, dual 867mhz g4

I have only had this happen twice and the second time was just this morning. On my laptop running Tiger latest version and FCP 4.5 and QT 7.1 (I think)
Did a long overnight render and this morning... all greyed out.
It's one of those things that make you question wether you're really awake or not because you think it's just that you haven't got the program selected or something equally as simple. And of course, I couldn't remember what caused it last time. (which I believe was pre Tiger)
But after trying everything I could think of, I finally had to Force Quit. Good news is that the only thing I could get to work was SAVE from the keyboard. But it would not quit from the keyboard.
Opened the project after the restart and all was fine.
PS, my computer was set to not sleep.
I had no second monitor attached or selected.
This is the only small issue I've had when using FCP 4.5 and Tiger, otherwise all has been worjing great including capture and PTV.

  • HT4623 After I press general, I see everything but Software update. Download and install does not even appear, it's not grayed out. There is no Software update button. Why is that?

I have an iPod touch 4G. I have been trying to skype with my friends with skype 5.0 and I was the only one that could not download it. Then I researched why and it says I need iOS 5.0. I then went back to research how to download it and on here it says that it should be in setting under general and then you will see software update. That if I don't have any room I will see download and install grayed out. But not even software update is there. There's no button. It basically does not exist on my iPod 4. Why is this?

That is only a feature of iOS 5 or later...

  • Some Menus Grayed-Out Briefly On Photoshop CS5 Startup

For a second or two right after starting the app most of the menus are disabled (grayed-out), as shown below, and even though Chris Cox says they should, they NEVER become activated as long as the menu is kept open.  I've left it literally for minutes like this just to see.  The duration for this period is just long enough that I can hit the File menu.  The workaround is to click File again (or click somewhere else) to hide the File menu, then click File again.
I reported this once before and was informed that it must be one of my plugins causing the problem.  In fact disabling some plugins caused it to either seem to disappear or to be a problem for a much shorter time after startup.  At first I thought disabling my Genuine Fractals plug-in cleared it up, but I have seen it happen on my 64 bit Windows 7 system since.
I've just installed Photoshop CS5 on 32 bit Windows 7, and have done NOTHING more than just start the application - no plug-ins or even preferences changes.
Clearly, because this is a completely fresh install with no other changes this cannot be a plug-in or Photoshop configuration problem.  Perhaps it could be tied to a WINDOWS configuration preference choice I have made, though, since my 32 bit Windows 7 system has many of the same UI tweaks I've made for my 64 bit system.
Photoshop 12.0.0 did this and 12.0.1 does it also.  It's the only app I use that does it.
Certainly this is no more than a minor irritation, but minor irritations have a way of getting to a person, and it would be nice if when I went to do File - Open it was ready for me.
    Any ideas?
For reference, my prior thread on this subject is here:  http://forums.adobe.com/message/2868165
    Thanks.
    -Noel

    Thanks for your thoughts, guys.
My 64 bit system is a pretty highly tuned and well-performing workstation, so my first guess would be that local resources cannot be holding up the process of initialization much.
I'm seeing it on both 64 bit and 32 bit Windows 7 systems, both with and without OpenGL enabled.
An online check seemed plausible, so I fired up the debugging tool "Fiddler 2", and noted that no web communications are occurring at the time of Photoshop startup.
Could it be other software on these systems?  Not plug-ins - I've ruled them out - but antivirus for example (I use Avast Pro)?  I don't know.  Possible I suppose.
I can certainly live with waiting a bit longer to use Photoshop.  My main reason for bringing it up again is that Photoshop seems to be doing something different from what Chris Cox says it should be doing (enabling the menu items even with the menu held open), and I wanted him to know that.  Maybe there's something Chris can tweak in the application to get that working better for the next release.

  • Photoshop CS5 all menus grayed out

Photoshop file after working on image all the menus go grayed out. Able to save file but can not select any menus. After you save the image quit and then reopen file works fine. This has happened 5 times today.

Oh, now that was a low blow. Insults are uncalled for.
Seriously though, this is hardly the kind of bug that any programmer or QA dept would have even imagined. For something this wacky to happen just because a file is being saved to a relatively slow hard drive? No one could have foreseen even the possibility of such an oddball bug. That's just the way it goes sometimes, especially with huge applications like Photoshop.

I know it's a couple of years old but is  a 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 2GB of RAM really condsidered a "slow drive" these days? What should I be looking at upgrading to?
Yes, Sam, it wouldn't matter if your laptop were only two weeks old, laptops always use very slow hard drives to reduce both power consumption and heat, that's just one of the tradeoffs you make when you choose a laptop instead of a desktop.
What should you be looking to upgrade to? Well, there does happen to be a high-spead option for laptops today that was not available when you got your laptop a couple of years ago: solid state drives (SSD), which are now an option (albeit expensive) in MacBook Pros. They are amazingly fast.

  • Edit in Photoshop option grayed out ?

    Hello,
Just upgraded from Lightroom V4.4 to V5.  After this upgrade I find that I can no longer select the option "Edit in Photoshop", the option is grayed out and is not selectable.
I have Photoshop CS6 currently installed and don't have plans to upgrade to Photoshop CC (out of my price range).
Anyone know if Lightroom V5 only interfaces with Photoshop CC now?
    Thanks!
    Bill

I suggest that you try reinstalling either Lightroom or Photoshop, or even both. I have both Photoshop CS6 and Lightroom 5 installed on my computer and Lightroom and Photoshop work together as expected. Lightroom 5 does NOT just interface with Photoshop CC. It will interface with any version that you have installed.

  • PhotoShop Filters grayed out when using Aperture

I sent some photos from Aperture to PS to add some frames. Used the Texture filter and all went well for 3 photos. Then it quit working. Some of the filters are grayed out. I tried the same thing from Lightroom and it was the same. All worked fine with iPhoto. If I export the photos to another folder, desk top etc., then open them in PS, all the filters are working. But for some reason some of the filters will not work when opening a photo from Aperture to PS.
Any suggestion why some filters would quit when they worked before?
    Thanks, Allie

That's because you have ACR set to 8 bit and you have Aperture set to 16 bit. (Clicking the text that looks like a web link at the bottom of the ACR window is how you change it)
You could change Aperture's external editor preferences to send 8 bit instead of 16 bit.
    Or
Once in Photoshop you could change it: Image>> Mode >> 8 Bit as I think Steve was suggesting.

  • Why are the iDVD menus grayed out?

I downloaded a movie from iTunes, downloaded fine. Opens and plays in Quicktime, no problem. The format is mp4 and m4v (tried both). But when I put it into iDVD to put on a DVD disk, cannot do. Using the magic iDVD choice, I can set it up, drag the movie in, preview. But I get a message I need to access "Project info" and change the settings. However, that menu item (and almost all the other menu items) are grayed out, so can't do it.
So what is the problem? I tried both formats in iDVD and neither will work. Is it the wrong format?

Yes, I tried it again by seeing the song in the main library as opposed to seeing it in a playlist. Again, the lyrics tab was grayed out. I was able to see the tab, however, when I did a "get info" for one of her music videos I have.

  • Can't open file. Menus grayed out.

A project file (too complex and too much time invested to start all over again) opens to a program with no opened windows and most of the menu items are grayed out (unavailable). The project belongs to a four-disc project and the rest open fine. This one got corrupted in the save process and there is no backup... for got as this has not happened for some time. Last time it happened, a few versions back, it was solved by renaming/relocating the assets to force a re-link and that solved the issue then. Now it does not.
It is awkward that it seems to open completely but it leaves everything (except the info and media window) closed. Since the menu items are grayed, I can't open closed windows.
    All suggestions will be appreciated.

I probably spent 8 hours in this project and four fixing it! I simply did not want to make a new project...
I think I found out what was wrong with it and it looks like a file was not properly saved by the application: ModuleDataB which is in the package/contents/resources
I replaced it with one that was working (desperate measure) and it now opens. I saved and hope for the best now.
The file came from disc one of four... they are very similar in every single aspect and the mentioned file is almost identical.
Further inspection make me suspect how DVDSP handles and saves layout information as this was the main difference between the files in the project. The problematic project had windows spanning over two monitors. Incredible!!!

  • Edit original, photoshop file  grayed out

    I am running CS5.5.
I Just started a new project. I made a title in Photoshop CS5 I imported it into my Premiere project dropped it on the time line and it works. But when I tried to Edit Original the command is grayed out.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks
    Dennis

I have re-phrased my response to make it NOT sound like having the suite is a requirement for the 'Edit in Adobe Photshop' option to appear.
If you have Photoshop stand-alone installed you will still get that option, in most cases. It just needs to be able to see that Photoshop has been installed. However, I've run tests where I had the suite installeld, installed a later version in addition to the newer suite version, and then upon choosing 'Edit in Adobe Photoshop', the file opend in that later standalone version of PrPro because the OS had changed the affilliation to that version upon install.
I know that there are also cases where the affilitation has been inadvertently set away from Photoshop altogether. Knowing that the user has installed the suite (or both standalone prodcuts of the same version) virtually eliminates that possibility. But in this case, the user was just not seeing the menu item.
@ welchphoto... Perfectly understable mistake. I've done that too. I'm just glad it we could solve it quickly for you.

  • Photoshop link grayed out in premiere pro 5.5

Using Premiere Pro CS 5.5. When I want to edit a still image i can right click adn the menu lists an option to "Edit in Photoshop". This option is grayed out. Is there a way to tell P/Pro that i have a copy of Photoshop 9.0 installed on my computer?

This would probably require to adjust the pertinet registry keys for the file format handlers and/or some config file. As Bob said, you'll get better answers on the PPro forum in any case.

  • Safari toolbar and menus grayed-out

The Safari toolbar and pul down menu selections stop working from time to time and I have to log out and log back in to get them working again. How can I fix this without having to log out and log back in?

    Hi!
    Please follow these steps
The issue should get resolve after first 3 steps, last 2 steps are for extreme conditions.
    1) on Mac: Safari - View - Un check "hide tool bars"
    2) From the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari / Empty Cache. When you are done with that...
    3) From the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari / Reset Safari. Select the top 5 buttons and click Reset.
    4) Force quit safari (Click on apple icon - force quit - select safari - click force quit - confirm).
    5)  Go to the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari/Preferences. Make note of all the preferences under each tab. Quit Safari. Now go to ~/Library/Preferences and move this file com.apple.safari.plist to the Desktop.
    Repeat Step 1.
