Photoshop not releasing file
When I attempt to move or rename a file that was recently open in Photoshop I get a Windoze message that the file is still in use by a program. If I close Photoshop I have full access to the file. Closing and restarting Photoshop just to move a file or rename a folder is a real pain.
Windows XP Pro, Photoshop CS2 and CS3Extended on 3 computers.
There’s probably an easy fix I haven’t found.
Any Ideas?
TIA
Laverne
I have the same problem so I move all of my images to a temp folder, so all of my work there, and then move back to the original folder.
Then I don't have to worry about moving the original folder when I am done with it. I process 1,000s of images a day and this is the workaround that I use. If I forget to do this I usually have to close PS to move the folder.

Photoshop CS5 will not open files. Occasionally if i try to open a .psd file that has already been created by double clicking on it in its folder, it will open but I will hardly be able to edit it. For example, the brush tool does not work, crop tool, resizing image etc. I had this problem 2 weeks ago. I uninstalled adobe creative suite, ran the adobe cloud cleanup tool and then reinstalled the programs and everything worked again. However after a week everything suddenly went back to the way it was again. Very frustrating! I might as well mention that at the same time as Photoshop "crashed" I also became unable to drag objects in Illustrator and InDesign.
I am not very good on the technical side so I just copied all my performance info below. I am working from a laptop with a mouse plugged into the usb port. Is there any other details you need to know?
Thank you in advance for your help!

The gaming graphics score is based on the primary graphics adapter. If this system has linked or multiple graphics adapters, some software applications may see additional performance benefits.With 2 gigs of RAM you are just too out of date for modern software. Try bumping RAM up to max of 4 gigs.
Ideally you should be running the 64 bit OS with 8 gigs of RAM. -
Hi, hoping someone can help please. I've been using photoshop cs5 for a while now under Windows 8 64bit. I take photos using a Canon camera. In the last few days I have found that I now can no longer open files - Photoshop opens but the file does not. The only change I can see is that I have opened some pictures taken on a Nikon Camera recently. Has anyone got any suggestions please - I have updated the graphics driver, tried to install some latest ps5 updates but these don't work, Tried deleting settings file and tried uninstalling / reinstalling CS4.
You did not mention which file format is affected.
Please read these and proceed accordingly:

Just Upgraded to 10.4.1, Photoshop not Opening Files
Help!
I am on a MacBookPro and I just updated my MacOS X software to 10.4.1 and now Photoshop CS2 won't open any files. I get the beachball and the fan starts running on the machine. I files are large to small, jpegs to tiff to psds.
My CS2 ImageReady can open the files, but when I switch to Photoshop it just hangs.
I tried the commandappleshift to get rid of my preferences, but that didn't help. Does anyone have any tips?Ok for some reason it decided to start working again. I reinstalled the updates from Adobe..then opened a new file, saved it out, opened it again. And it opened so then I tried opening a jpeg and it opened.
It seems to be working find now..good LORD, ***. -
Applet within browser not releasing file resource
hi,
I have an applet for ftp images upload.
run from eclipse IDE (which uses applet viewer) the applet is ok.
if i run my applet from browser here is what happens:
i upload a file .& leave the browser opened.
i then open this same file with gimp or photo-shop & get file in use error.
if i close browser & try opening file .it works ok.
why the file isn't released when applet instance still on browser ?
is there a fix to this issue ?
thanks for helping .thanks for prompt reply.
yes i close all streams...
the core method i use to upload files is below (client is a FTPClient object)
private synchronized void putFile(File file, String remoteFile)
throws FileUploadException {
String sFile = null;
try {
sFile = r.chomp(remoteFile, '/');
client.put(file.getAbsolutePath(), sFile + file.getName());
r.numBytes += file.length();
} catch (Exception e) {
//e.printStackTrace();
try {
retry(file, sFile);
} catch (Exception e1) {
throw new FileUploadException(e1.getMessage());
}what am i doing wrong ? -
Greetings,
New to vb.net (2012) so bear with me.
I have a routine that I'm calling to get the Exif date and time from a JPG then renaming the file. However, the routine that gets the date and time is tying up the file so that the rename can't occur. I've tried closing, disposing and setting everything
to nothing but have had no luck. I know it's the read of the metadata tying up the files because if I change that routine to just pass back "now" the files rename perfectly.
What am I missing?!?!
Code is below. Thanks!

How come my Nikon D610 can not open photoshop CS6 raw files
any one know,i just bough a New Nikon D610 digitalcamera, i am upload in to Photoshop CS6 raw file, but can not open,why?
Nikon D610 support is coming in the next version of Adobe Camera Raw 8.3

Photoshop does not release memory after closing document.
When I close a large document Photoshop does not release the memory. If I open another document the program is slow and not resposive. If I close out of Photoshop and restart it then load the other document it is quick and responsive again.
A bit late to the party here but this issue is still live and I can't find anything else on the forum similar to it (apologies if there is).
Photoshop does not seem to re-use memory it just keep allocating new right up to the limit before the prog crashes (same applies to Fireworks) so any batch/script processing of more than a handful of files is impossible.
I am Photoshop via Creative Cloud (so I am always updated to your latest release), Windows 7 64k with 8Mb memory and am using Norton Intenet Security 20.3.1.22 which is updated daily. -
Could not initialize Photoshop because the file is locked
I have the problem where you get the Could not initialize Photoshop because the file is locked, where the solution was to fix the properties in the jpg. I did that and tried the Ctrl-Alt-Shft thing too. I pressed them in time and got the message to delete the settings. When I click yes, I still get the "file locked" message. If it is the scratch disk setting problem, I can't get PS open to change it. This problem started when I was opening a locked jpg from a relative. (Now none of my previous pics will open either). Any other ideas other than these that are already listed in the forums? Thanks for any help.
Technical: Windows XP 5.1, HP7680, Photoshop CS2, 2g ram, more than enough work drives. (no Vista)
Sequence of events: 1) recd a jpg from a relative in an email and saved it to hard drive. 2) with Photoshop unopened, I rt clkd on the jpg and chose "open with CS2". 3) PS started loading and then stopped with the "file locked" msg. Clkd on OK and PS closed. 4) tried to open PS from the shortcut (and from explorer) and got same result. 5) researched the problem and then used the Ctrl-Alt-Shft approach, got the window that asks to "delete settings" and chose ok, PS closed again. 6) went to the jpg and displayed properties and saw "This file came from another computer and might be locked....", so I clicked "unblock". 7) retried step 2, then 4 with same results. 7) tried to open an old jpg with step 2 and same result (got file locked msg). 8) no longer can bring up the "delete settings" window with the the Ctrl-Alt-Shft approach as it looks like it deleted the settings the 1st time.
Any ideas???? Thanks again.Bob,
I do not know why a locked JPG would mess up PS. I could see if you always tried to launch PS, by dbl-clicking on the JPG in Windows Explorer, but not from your Desktop shortcut, or from the PS.exe file.
For the locked file, there is a freeware utility, Unlocker. I do not have a URL handy, but Google should find it for you. It has worked on some network assets, that seemed to lock up on me.
Good luck, though this might not address your PS launch issue.

My photoshop will not open files or create new files, please help?
Photoshop CS6 on Windows 7 will not work,
When machine is first started the program works, for about 10 mins, then
I can not open files, create new ones. When it does work it can not perform functions like transform etc.
I tried disabling third party plug ins
I tried creating a new account on my machine
Nothing seems to work.
Can any one shed some light on the problem?
Cheers!Hudechrome wrote:
Sorry! Ignore it.
There is a script running which Noscript lets me forbid, called akamaihd.net. It runs a script which is the same as in html when you highlight a word then attach a url to it.
I don't know why I am seeing it but not others. FF and Chrome seem susceptible to it. It's not malware as usually thought of because no virus/malware program finds it here.
Unfortunately, I have to forbid this script for every site I visit.
In the other thread where your browser displayed an 'i.trkjmp.com' link which isn't really in the web page, I gave you a Google link for info about the problem. You said that it must be something else. Well, for months now, Chrome and Firefox users have been troubled by extensions which cause the 'i.trkjmp.com' problem. You might want to revisit the link I gave you. -
Photoshop does not open files, nor able to create new documents
Has happened at least once before;
* open file in Photoshop seems normal up until actually rendering the window where the document should be visible; no UI shows for the opened window
* same goes with File -> New; dialog visible, I can select file size and other settings, but when confirming - I do not get a document window opened
No obvious changes to my system lately except a new version of Flash Player installed at last reboot.
Illustrator and InDesign not affected (open and new works as expected)

Problem with file descriptors not released by JMF
Hi,
I have a problem with file descriptors not released by JMF. My application opens a video file, creates a DataSource and a DataProcessor and the video frames generated are transmitted using the RTP protocol. Once video transmission ends up, if we stop and close the DataProcessor associated to the DataSource, the file descriptor identifying the video file is not released (checkable through /proc/pid/fd). If we repeat this processing once and again, the process reaches the maximum number of file descriptors allowed by the operating system.
The same problem has been reproduced with JMF-2.1.1e-Linux in several environments:
- Red Hat 7.3, Fedora Core 4
- jdk1.5.0_04, j2re1.4.2, j2sdk1.4.2, Blackdown Java

Many thanks.Its a bug on H263, if you test it without h263 track or with other video codec, the release will be ok.
You can try to use a not-Sun h263 codec like the one from fobs or jffmpeg projects. -
Could not initialize Photoshop because the file is empty.
I tried to start Photoshop 5.1 64bit today, and it shows the blue intro screen with the reading and loading, and then it goes to a popup error message that reads, "Could not initialize Photoshop because the file is empty." I can run the 32bit version fine, but I would prefer to use the 64bit version. I am running Windows 64bit Ultimate. I have been having issues here and there with CS5.5 on this computer. I ran CS4 fine for the last few years, but since after the upgrade, things have been acting weird. About two weeks ago, InDesign refused to work, so I did a reinstall. Then, two days later, I was having other issues, so I did another reinstall. Before that, Illustrator was having issues, so I had to copy programs files from my office computer to my home computer to make it work. I am starting to wonder if my hard drive is going out. Is there an Adobe fix for just Photoshop? I have the CS5.5 installation DVDs here. I tried copying the Photoshop.exe from my office computer to my home computer and replacing it, but it didn't work either.
What do you guys recommend? Thanks!I am starting to wonder if my hard drive is going out.
Not necessarily, but it could be hopelessly fragmented and have per-sector damage. Run your disk maintenance tools from the drive's property tab and clean out unnecessary temp files, too.
