Photoshop on external monitor buggy
I am running a mid 2012 MBPr with the latest software updates. I also connect a thunderbolt apple display 27" to the laptop. I put the photoshop CS 6 window on the thunderbolt display, thus keeping every other application on my laptop screen. When I drag a photoshop file onto the thunderbolt monitor the image freaks out ( see photo ). If I put the image back on my laptop screen, it works fine. If I unplug the thunderbolt display, and plug it back in, the image looks normal on that screen until I try to resize the photo larger or bigger in the screen, then it just freaks out again.
I only have the problem with photoshop, but I bought that monitor for the sole purpose for putting photoshop on a second monitor. I'm thinking its a video card issue possibly, but not sure since its very specific. When photoshop is running on the laptop screen I never have this issue.
Anyone have any thoughts?
My best guess woud be that there is a resoulution difference on the thunderbolt display and your MBP. Make sure that the screecn resolution matches. I would keep changing the resoultion to different numbers and see if that helps. It could also be that the monitor is having trouble differentiating the desktop between the photo. By the looks of it I would also try using a different vga or hdmi cord. If you are using a vga cord try an hdmi cord and see if that works better. Also in system preferences under hardware select displays. Click the button that says detect displays. This might help the computer sense the fact that it is connected to a display. I can help you more with this if you give me a few more details. What kind of connector cord are you using? When you have your laptop connected to the display, but are using another photo editor or previewer like iphoto does this happen? If you could answer these that would be helpfull in further fullfilling your question. There might be a couple of other fixes I could give you.

Hello,
Here is a screenshot of my Photoshop that I snapped to one of my external montors on my Mac and now I can't move it...and most of the features of the program are cut off..

It seems as if lucasperdidao, the original poster, never got an answer to his question.
The only thing that I can suggest is to try SwitchResX and manipulate the settings until you find the right settings for your monitor. I believe that there's a free trial period, so that you can text it before purchasing.

External monitor flashes when scrolling large Photoshop images
Hello,
My external monitor is flashing when I scroll around large Photoshop files. I'm assuming it the graphics processor switching modes. I've got a brand new Macbook Pro 2.66 i7 17" computer and am using a 23" Cinema HD Display (clear bezel) with the Apple ADC to DVI adapter.
How can I get this to stop?

Message was edited by: CyrilWAccording to Apple with an external monitor connected only the nvidia card is used. So it's not changing graphics cards. I would think it's more a driver issue or the usual blinking screen fault of nvidia (timing issue). Send in a report to Apple describing the fault.
One other thing to check is your cables, from what i gather from your post you have a chain adc-dvi-mdp rattle them, and clean them with spray to take away oxides.

Photoshop window does not display unless connected to external monitor
I use a MBP connected it to an Apple Cinema Display used as an external monitor (not a dual display) when in my studio.
When I use Adobe Photoshop CS 5 without the monitor the image window does not display on the MBP. If I plug the external monitor in, the window is displayed correctly on the MBP. Photoshop is opening and "displaying" the image window offscreen. Nothing gets it back onscreen, except plugging in the external monitor.
I often use Photoshop away from my studio so this is a big problem. PShop is essentially unusable unless connected to an external monitor.
Is this a known issue?
Any workarounds?
Any ideas?
There is a previous discussion on this topic from January 2012, but it remains open and unanswered. Hoping there are some new ideas. Thanks for the help.The MacOS still thinks the second display is available and valid -- so Photoshop puts the documents on the last used display and the OS doesn't give any errors.
Once the OS notices the change in display configuration, Photoshop should go back to the main display and force images and dialogs back to the main display.
Applications rely on the OS for the display configuration, and sometimes the OS gets confused or holds onto outdated configurations a bit too long... -
Hi I am using a macbook pro 13" and an eternal monitor running lion Opened cs6 then dragged it to the external monitor (no more free floating wondows??). Com/n brought up the new doc dialog. Upon click OK the whole viewer screen tried to replicate disjointed portions of my desktop. See attached. I closed the new doc without saving and dragged the app back to the laptop screen. I then opened a new doc again and it showed no problem. I then dragged the app to the external monitor and it was fine. Where are the free floating panels that are customary in an Adobe/mac environment? How can I access them? Perhaps this is why the app tried to show my desktop.

Photoshop is a problem - "sticky" tools with external monitor
Hello!
When working in Photoshop is a problem - "sticky" tools. For example: working tool "Healing brush tool" we stifle alt and select the area and then release the Alt key and the target remains in the form of a cursor unstrument not be returned. The same problem with navigation for example, pinching the "space" appears "hand", which also remains.

If you give complete and detailed information about your setup and the issue at hand,
such as your platform (Mac or Win),
exact versions of your OS, of Photoshop (not just "CS6", but something like CS6v.13.0.6) and of Bridge,
your settings in Photoshop > Preference > Performance
the type of file you were working on,
machine specs, such as total installed RAM, scratch file HDs, total available HD space, video card specs, including total VRAM installed,
what troubleshooting steps you have taken so far,
what error message(s) you receive,
if having issues opening raw files also the exact camera make and model that generated them,
if you're having printing issues, indicate the exact make and model of your printer, paper size, image dimensions in pixels (so many pixels wide by so many pixels high). if going through a RIP, specify that too.

Photoshop color problem on external monitor
I'm using MacBook w/ OS X Snow Leopard, NEC LCD2490 monitor attached, both displays calibrated. I found at some point that colors in Photoshop were WAY off on the NEC. Images looked "correct" in Lightroom on the NEC, but when opened in PS I had massive color shift and desaturation, e.g. purple flowers became dull gray-blue. I could drag the same image to the laptop and it appeared "correct" in both LR and PS. I checked color settings, etc. and couldn't find a problem, but presumably that would render the image incorrectly on both monitors. Most significantly, the image appears "correct" even on the NEC monitor when the laptop display is off (clam shell mode). Summary: Dual monitors: LR/PS correct on laptop display, LR correct on NEC but PS is WAY off. Using external monitor only: image displays correctly in both LR/PS. I suspect this is a hardware/firmware/OS problem vs. PS. Anybody else have this problem?
Snow Leopard has some known problems with color managing external monitors. We've been looking into it and notified Apple (as have a few other color management experts).

Depending on your requirement and how much you are willing to pay. The one which can calibrate colors for photoshop normally more expensive than others. Your machine should be able to handle all normal monitors in the market today.

External Monitor changing resolutions on Macbook
I have seen several people ask this question, but I haven't found a suitable answer. I have a MacBook running 10.6.8 at school. I teach and move from room to room hooking up to different projectors and monitors. The set up is just very unstable. Despite its supposed ability to remember settings, it rarely does and the resolutions are messed up as well as the display callibrations. I have an external monitor on my desk. Yesterday, I set the resolution to the native 1280x1024, when I plugged back in, it was back to 1024x768. For some reason, the higher resolution wasn't even appearing on the list until I fiddled with it.
Why is this so buggy on this MacBook running this OS? Is there a way to force it to remember display settings better? Any tips?
I know that other teachers have more problems than I do because they don't even know how to change resolutions or anything like that.

Macbook Pro - Black screen and external monitor
Hi there,
I'm new here and it would be great if anybody could give me some advice about my Macbook Pro issue. First of all, I would like to thank all the contributors for your comments. I'll go to an Apple Store asap, but I'll really appreciate any of your comments so I'll know more about this issue and how to manage it.
My device details are:
Macbook Pro / 2.8 GHz Intel Core i7 / 4GB 1067 MHz DDR3 / Macintosh HD / Mac OS X 10.6.8
NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M
Other connected equipment:
HP Monitor Pavilion 22xi (with an official Apple adapter - projector's plug)
Wacom tablet Bamboo Fun (USB connection)
I usually work with graphics software (Illustrator, Photoshop, etc.), since I bought my laptop (3-4 years ago) it has worked faultlessly. But I started to notice some problems about two weeks ago. The problem is basically always the same: After some hours of work, suddenly and randomly (it tends to happen when I click on a button) the screen turns off but the computer is still running (I can hear the fan and hard disk). As I said I use an external monitor, and it also turns off at the same time. That's why I thought it may not be a problem with the screen, it's probably related to the graphics card ?¿?
The troubleshooting steps that I've tried are:
After waiting several minutes and without any response, I have to restart my laptop. When it turns on a Panic Report message pops up. It says that a severe problem made me turn the laptop off suddenly (or something like that). The Panic Report says something about "kernel_task", I have no idea what it is, just in case it could help to clarify more (I've printed all these panic reports).
I also have to mention that this laptop gets really hot on the left side, which I reckon it's a very common thing in these devices. I have to use a desktop electric fan to provide relief to both of us
I've also disable the "Automatic graphics switching" tab in Energy Saver menu.
Despite all of this, the screen and the external monitor are still turning off.
Any idea?

ClaraI would suggest that you run AHT using Using Apple Hardware Test. You can either reboot the machine and press the D key, or use your second Grey disk. This would potentially show you any HW problems.
Typically these older machines exhibit GPU issues. There is a third-party application called gfxCardStatus, that can provide some insight as well.
This may or may not help if there are GPU issues - About NVRAM and PRAM (reset NVRAM/PRAM/SMC).
It is possible to enable remote access (via SSH) and even if the screen is not working, the machine can be accessed remotely. Please see System Preferences -> Sharing.
Can you run a test with both the lid of the MBP and the external monitor plugged in. Does your external monitor disconnect, but the internal one still show a screen? -
MBP does not detect external monitor on DVI connection...
(2007) MBP C2D 2.33 15", OSX LION 3gb. Worked fine till about 3 days ago (right after installing the last round of updates).
My external monitor now fails to connect on DVI cable. Since it also has VGA, I was able to test this way with a DVI to VGA adapter and that worked perfectly, but the vga gives a lower resolution. Having estalished that the graphics adapter and the monitor were okay, I looked for other issues.
Starting the MBP in clamshell mode, it found the monitor on DVI. Then restarting normally, it all worked fine, UNTILL the MBP went to sleep. when it awoke, no external. Plugged, unplugged, trashed display prefs, nothing, though it does still work via DVI-VGA.
I don't think having to clamshell everytime is a workable solution, but I NEED MY DESK SPACE!
Any thoughts?Yesterday, having had the problem become far worse, I too tried PRAM/NVRAM clearing (SMC reset so many times I can't count them). Then, in desperation I purchased TechtoolPro 6 and ran it. Everything s working well now, and in fact the video issue cleared up while techtool loaded, it didn't even wait for me to run the thing!
More: About 3 weeks ago, I made a HardDrive image from an older white macbook so I could repair its hard drive. After doing that job, I (thought I) deleted the image from my MBP, but the disk still showed 80Gb used that wasn't before. So while I thought I had 130GB free, I was only showing 50. After running the directory rebuild, I now have 175gb Free! So the directory was keeping track of 95GB that WASN'T there! I suspect this had something to do with my problems. Then running the Defrag and Optimization routines, my 2007 MBP is running like a brand new machine. Other things that had been buggy (like the right click on my magic mouse) are now working like they should.

128MB vs. 256MB Video Card for External Monitor?
I may want to run an external monitor for Final Cut Pro HD. Will getting the 2.16 Processor with its 256MB Video Card drive an external monitor any better than the 1.83 w/ 128MB Video Card? TIA
BTW, I won't be "gaming" at all. Just doing a little FCP HD...

(much more than me) and your math is unobjectionable.
But in my opinion 16% of the graphic card's capacity
just to light up the monitors is not a low figure.
Actually, for generic 2D stuff that doesn't involve OpenGL, Randy has it correct. You'll find that VRAM makes absolutely no difference to Photoshop, for instance. A couple of big screens will happily run on 64MB VRAM.
Once you start running pro applications on those
monitors, and expect real-time responsiveness and
lower and lower rendering times; you might come to
realize that 128MB of VRAM is enough, it's a lot...
but not excessive.
You only need the extra VRAM for apps that specifically use the graphic card, through OpenGL, Core Image, Core Video or similar. Of course, there are more and more apps which leverage the graphics card this way, so 256MB is going to be more future-proof, and is what I went for. -
Two External Monitors - HP laptop G71 343US

I have the aforementioned hp laptop G71 343US. I work from home and I use a single external monitor almost everyday connected via the VGA port. I happen to come across another external monitor and was looking on amazon at some parts, and on youtube for videos, etc.
Bottom line question, can I hook up two different external monitors AND use my laptop screen? can this be done in such a manner than the desktop is extended and not duplicated?
I assumed that the VGA splitter i saw on amazon would create a duplicate display on both externals, but i saw videos proclaiming that a usb to VGA adapter could be used to create the desired effect. further investigation revealed that this is a "displayport" to VGA adapter.... i don't even know if i have a 'displayport.'
anyway i'm a little confused and couldn't find a concrete answer to my question. so i came here

I've got a setup in front of me now using one of my old laptops (nearly 5 yrs old), 2 full HD monitors and one USB dock
The following image show my laptop screen (#1) has my Yahoo (Yahoo7 in my country) homepage, left screen (#2) is a Photoshop session and right screen (#3) has my normal desktop background which is my grandson.
In short: you can, I don't have HP device to test but using a Lenovo DisplayLink with 2 DVI ports from work.

Bug - Layers on external monitor
I keep my layers usually on my external monitor, and my main photoshop window on my laptop monitor. I've recently been having an issue where my mouse seems to lag only in the layers window on my external monitor. It kind of jumps around and makes it hard to select layers.
Does any have this problem or a solution to this problem?

For exporting, I used the Export>Quicktime movie, just like you said, using the current setting (i.e. Compression:None)
The DVD player was connected to a PAL TV, but it's OK because the DVD player can read anything. I know because I've watched NTSC as well as PAL dvd movies before.
The Canon XL2 the Mac is connected to, via Firewire, is NTSC, connected via RCA to the PAL TV. Which means the signal I'm watching is Black & White... (I know this sounds WEIRD)... but it's O.K. because what I'm really checking as I edit is the interlacing problem that I got when playing the DVD on the dvd player.... : the BAD problem.
How bad? Really bad. Any sudden movement, or panning of objects with vertical lines, like a painting or a building looks all wobbly and curvey and blurry and wrong, which is unnacceptable for the project I'm doing, as it is a professional work (Meaning that I'm charging money for it, despite the crazy assemble of different products and formats I'm using).
I've gotten things that look good before, but never on Final Cut Pro.. I'm new to the program, and to Mac, and this is the first video I'm exporting to a DVD on this platform. -
3 external monitors for rMBP - hoping
I read this article http://www.theverge.com/2012/6/20/3104640/macbook-pro-retina-display-three-exter nal-monitors that declared that rMBP could natively run 3 external monitors (2 thunderbolt, 1 hdmi).
Mine only runs 2 - either 1 TB and 1 HDMI, or 2 TB. Does this mean something is wrong with my computer, or is there some special trick I need to do?

I now have 4 monitors running on my 2009 17" mid-2009 MBP. The MBP, 2 17" Dell monitors and a 24" Dell monitor. Mavericks allows multiple displays as seperate working environments.
As you can see in the image (excuse the clutter..cable management is under the desk and its a WIP at the moment)I have the upper left monitor working in excel, the middle larger monitor in iTunes, the left monitor is browsing via Firefox and I'm in Safari in this forum on the MBP.
I have run Photoshop, Protools, Safari and Dreamweaver in this set up over the last few hours also.
The only issues I'm working through now is trying to have my dock on all displays and keeping the display setting after the MBP is put to sleep. Any suggestions are helpful.
At this time I haven't put the MBP in my Bookendz docking station, but I just updgraded to a 250GB Samsung SSD, 8GBRAM and replaced the superdrive with the old 500GB HDD. I also store most of my audio and graphic files on an external HDD and iCloud.
