Photoshop only using 20% of 8Gb ram

i am usually dealing with huge files in photoshop and i have 8Gb of ram yet my G5 dual processor with 80Gb of hard drive space and 8Gb of ram only lets photoshop use about 20% of available ram. it says it is using 100% of available ram.
is there a way i can allocate more ram to photoshop?
thanks
eric

RAM is limited by the program not the system. Currently, Photoshop 7 and Photoshop CS are "officially" limited to addressing no more than 2 GB of RAM. In actual practice, a "100% Allocation" of RAM to Photoshop 7.01 is around 1800 MB on systems with 2.5 or more GB of RAM installed.

  • Photoshop is using 4-6GB of RAM and hanging up

Since the most recent cc update to 14.1.2 Ps is hanging up on simple tasks such as cropping images. Activity Monitor shows 4-6GB of RAM being used by Ps. This problem does not occur in CS6 which is using under 800 MB of RAM and cropping 200MB files without any problem.
Can someone make a recommendation on how to remedy this problem?
    Thanks in Advance,
    Celeste

    Hi Mandhir,
Thanks for getting back to me. Is it common for Ps CC to utilize between
4-6GB of RAM? My Macbook Pro is maxed out at 8GBŠ Photoshop doesn't leave
much available at that utilization. CS6 only uses 800MBŠ I've never had a
problem editing images with that configuration.
All of the performance settings are optimized to the KB you sent over I
went through that over the weekend.
I think I may have found a bug as well in the crop tool. When I changed the
setting in the crop tool from 'fixed' to 'original' ratio Ps didn't hang up..
    I can repeat the problemŠ
Set the crop tool to fixed W x H, add only one measurement such as 1600px w,
leave the height field empty (for example), set res to 96 DPI and then
cropŠ. Ps will hang up every time.

  • P55 GD 80 - only sees 4GB of 8GB RAM - G.Skill F3-16000CL9D-4GBTD

I have just built a system with  aP55 GD 80 - and it only sees 4GB of the installed 8GB RAM.  I have not yet installed an OS, I am just POSTing and going into BIOS, and BIOS says there are 4GB physical memory.
This is G.Skill F3-16000CL9D-4GBTD memory, (4 sticks of 2GB each).
I upgraded the BIOS to 1.5 and it made no difference.
Also, interestingly, if I only run 2 sticks, it sees 2GB instead of 4GB (regardless of which 2 sticks) -- so it's as if it thinks each stick is just 1 GB.
Can anybody give me pointers of what I might be able to do about this?
I've read that some people are trying newer beta BIOS versions (newer than 1.5) to resolve memory problems - where can I download those?
    thanks a bunch!

    Dont buy the wrong RAM 2 x (2x2GB) for 8GB use !
    Charges can be different.
Thats the right way. Buy 8GB kits only guys!!!(for every P55 system)->
    example:

    http://geizhals.at/deutschland/a454453.html

    Bios shows 4GB(2) instead 8(4)GB:
Test every module with memtest 4.0 on errors http://www.memtest.org/  2hours !!!
Put CPU out, control your socket pins, mount cooler and look if 8GB function is proper, control RAM socket.
Flash newest Beta .173  with only 1 or 2 RAM sticks http://msi-forum.de/index.php?page=Thread&postID=727333#post727333 (you must register in forum,or ask a mod here in the HQ forum for Beta

  • Photoshop not using set amount of ram. Stuck at 6gb

Hey guys, just recently started having issues with photoshop not getting the set amount of ram that it needs. I have it set to use 24gb of Ram (I have 32gb) Tried a reset, tried resetting back to factory then back, nothing. The odd thing is that if I set it to use only 1 gb of ram, it still idles at 6gb. Any tips on how to approach this would be greatly appreciated as I have projects on the run that require much attention.
    Thanks.

  • Cs 5.5 only uses 22% of my ram, but 100% of CPU

    Hi,
I'm just wondering why the ram usage is so low compared to the CPU in AE cs 5.5? I'm checking the bottom stats when the render is happening and it says only 22% of my ram is being used. Even until the very end, only 22%.
That being said, people on here are recommending tons of ram, such as 32gb+, but why? If this is the case? Maybe my comp needs more complex effects such as grain generation?
    Thanks!

Maybe my comp needs more complex effects such as grain generation?
Yes, which is the whole point. Otherwise simply refer to the many performance and "best settings" threads that have amassed over the years to get a feeler for how AE uses resources.

  • Qosmio only uses 1.75GB of RAM (1789MB) from a total of 4GB

I have a Qosmio X305-Q706 and I recently fixed it because it had a bootup failure caused by the keyboard and now I've discovered another problem with it. I don't know why but the computer detects 4GB of RAM installed in the system properties but any other RAM monitoring tool will show me that there's only 1.75GB (1789MB) available!
I'd expect at least a maximum of 3GB knowing the 32-bit limitations when it comes to using RAM. I thought that probably the computer administered the RAM modules automatically by activating them if the RAM exceeded the available amount... but it didn't! It started using the page file and kept the RAM at 1.75GB.
I added a few screen shots for somebody to see. Please help.

  • Why can I only use 2.48 GB RAM in Boot Camp (Win 8.1 Pro, 64-bit)?

Hello, I am fairly new to the iMac and I have to use some programs in Windows that are not available for Mac so I set up Boot Camp and installed Windows 8.1.
My iMac is a I7-2600 CPU @ 3.4GHz with 16 GB RAM, system type-bit. Under system in Windows it shows Installed memory (RAM) 16 GB (2.48 GB usable).
I read about this problem and most answers are related to people using 32-bit. So what is wrong in my case, where is the problem?
Thank you in advance for help and suggestions.

Can you check msconfig in Windows as shown in the linked discussion?

  • After Effects Hangs on Initializing Media Core and Only Uses .40 GB or RAM

I actually have either 2 separate issues or one that effects both. The fist one is that once After Effects loads, I generally can't RAM preview for 1080p quality, and about 6-20 frames for 720p, depending on if I get lucky or not. I went into Memory and Multiprocessing in the preference and no matter what I set the RAM per CPU to, the Actual CPUs that will be used is always 0, so then I go to details and it says "Installed RAM: 11.99 GB." "Current RAM Usage: .28 GB" "Allowed RAM Usage: .40GB." Whenever I render a video it always uses up to 3% or 4% of my RAM but never any higher.
    And the second problem...
Whenever I start After Effects CS6 (and it happened in CS5.5) Trials it hangs on Initializing Media Core, for about 5 minutes, then it says Quicktime isn't installed. To fix that problem I have tried everything I could find in the 30+ hours I have spent on that problem. Turning off all firewalls, anti-virus, etc, updating, reinstalling, and everything in between. (Also I see dynamiclinkmanager.exe and  AfterFX.exe but not QT32.exe or PProHeadless.exe which need to be allowed through firewalls and such)
    I'm using After Effects CS6
    Windows 7 64-bit
    12 GB of RAM
Quicktime 7.7.2 and Itunes 10.6.3.25  Any ideas would be very much appreciated, thanks! ^.^

Ok, well I installed updates to my graphics driver, After Effects, and Windows, and unfortunately nothing worked, but from reading other forums, when I am using After Effects I should see QT32server.exe right? That doesn't show up in processes, but also I installed Premiere Pro to test dynamic link, and I always get an error "Failed to connect to Dynamic Link Manager." and when I hit Ctrl + Enter it says the same thing. ( I actually don't know what that hotkey does ) any ideas at all would be very much appreciated
Edit: I started thinking about it, my driver is an Nvidia GeForce GTS 450, which I didn't see on Adobe's supported list, is this the culprit behind the render problems?

  • Photoshop stops using RAM after 2GB on 64-bit system

    Hi everyone,
A customer of mine has a problem when he tries to open a pdf document in photoshop. This document is only 50MB large, but Photoshop displays the message "could not complete your request, not enough memory (ram)" when he tries to open this.
It is a windows 7 x64 system with 6GB of RAM. When the file is being opened, in process explorer you can see that photoshop is using more and more RAM untill it reaches the point of just above 2GB. Then photoshop displays this message.
The system still has 30% free RAM memory left, but adobe won't use this memory.
I have contacted adobe support with this issue and followed some kb's (http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/404/kb404439.html) but still no joy.
The last time I called, they said that there was nothing else to do.. So hope some of you guys on the forums can help me resolve this issue!
    Many thanks in advance!
    Kind regards,
    Sven

I think we both want to help the original poster with his problem.
What I can document is to help solve the issue. It is not an attack on anyone in this forum.

Yes, I took the Resaved_pdf.pdf from Dropbox.
When I open this file in Illustrator the resolution is 150 ppi
When opening Resaved_pdf.pfd in Acrobat Pro and exporting images while allowing Acrobat to determine the Colorspace & Resolution automatically it shows the resolution (as displayed in Photoshop) of the resulting base image as 149 ppi. Obviously Acrobat has a slight rounding error when determining the size and resolution, 149 ppi vs 150 ppi and the pixels dimensions are slightly smaller.
I believe that the lower resolutions shown about are the result of the default setting of the PDF Optimizer in Acrobat that were using to optimize the Resaved_pdf.pdf
When I took the PDF provided by the Original Poster at: http://attachments.webng.com/data/pdf.pdf
and opened in Illustrator the base image is 300 ppi
When opening the original PDF in Acrobat and exporting images while allowing Acrobat to determine the Colorspace & Resolution automatically it shows the resolution (as displayed in Photoshop) of the resulting base image as 299 ppi. Obviously Acrobat has a slight rounding error when determining the size and resolution, 299 ppi vs 300 ppi and the pixels dimensions are slightly smaller.
These results should be reproducible by anyone who wants to take a crack at it.

  • PS uses scratch disk over RAM

    Hi!
My Photoshop seems to use scratch disk instead of RAM.
Here's the scenario: I open up a file, convert it to a smart object and begin tiling it in a new document.
In task manager the memory usage for Photoshop.exe doesn't grov very much, it's around 300mb when I've duplicated my picture a few times. My scratch disk however has a temp file weighing 5gb! Task manager says also that the total usage of my physical memory is only 23%.
I have 8gb of RAM installed and I have my Memory Usage Settings set to Let Photoshop Use 5.4gb.
Now why is it that Photoshop uses my scratch disk even though I have lots of free RAM available? I thought Photoshop only uses scratch disk when the RAM is full?
    I have Windows 7 64-bit with Photoshop CS5.

    antevante wrote:

It's unclear how big a file you are talking about-doesn't seem to be very big? Photoshop by default will always allocate scratch disk space upon launch. Whether or not it uses it depends on how much ram you have and how big the image is. Photoshop tries to keep it's operations in ram and only goes out to the scratch disk when needed.
However, Photoshop always uses scratch disk space to track history. If the history step is only a small area tile it doesn't take up much space. If it's the whole document, history can very quickly suck up the scratch disk space. By default the History is set to 20 steps, if you do something involving the entire file, the scratch disk usage could end up being 20X the original file size depending on the number of steps you have in history. Note, the History feature doesn't actually steal ram from Photoshop...it's only writing to the scratch disk but it can get real big real quick and you've found out.

  • IMovie 09 uses up 4GB of RAM in less than 2 minutes

    Hi,
The topic says it all i think..
To be honest i don't know if i had this issue before Snow Leopard i have only been using it for about a week. I have a MacBook Pro (Early 2008) 2.6GHz with 4GB RAM installed. I have never had any issues with the RAM being used up this fast before ever (and i'm a pretty heavy photoshop user and gamer).
With just a simple project and little events i make a short clip, some transitions and a background tune. Then i minimize iMovie to check my Mail or another app and notice the mac became horribly slow and minimizing takes a good minute. Then i check Activity Monitor and iStat Pro to find within just a few minutes i not only used up 4GB of RAM but only am well into 4GB Swap File usage, i need to restart to turn my Mac back into the fast Mc it was before i started iMovie.
Before writing this i did a few tests with garageband and a couple of other apps including Adobe Suite etc... i still have a little over 2GB RAM free. Then i start iMovie, open my project and mess around a little.... wham, RAM gone, is this what's known as a memory leak ?
Any thoughts on this? I started experimenting / learning iMovie because i have a wedding DVD to make soon, i need this software to work right.
    Thanks in advance
    Jay

MPEG2 and AVCHD are two different codecs. Your footage will be one or the other, but not both. MPEG2 is used more often in standard definition cameras.
Having said that, your memory problem is unusual. iMovie uses a lot of memory, and if you are constrained on memory, it uses swap files. However, mine has never used up 4GB of real memory in 2 minutes. It looks like you have a memory leak somewhere (which could be a bug in iMovie).
I don't know how to find it since I can't replicate it on my system.
One thing that may help you monitor this is the free application called [MemoryStick|http://www.tidbits.com/matt>. You can install it and monitor your swapfiles real time. You can also see how much real memory and virtual memory iMovie is using at the moment through Activity Monitor (which I presume you are already doing.)
With MemoryStick, if I notice that I have 5,6, or 7 swapfiles going, and they are over 2GB (they have been as high as 4GB) then I know it is time to re-boot.

  • Computer recognizes 8GB of ram, but only uses 30% of it?

    Windows 7 Ultimate x64
    Intel Q9550
    ATI radeon 5770
    P5QPL-AM ASUS motherboard
    OCZ 8GB (2x 4GB) Platinum series RAM. pc2-6400 DDR2, 240 pin, non ecc, unbuffered
I have installed 8GB ram into my computer. Both my BIOS and system properties state I can use all 8GB of it. However- even when I put my computer under huge strain, I've never seen it go higher that 30-31%. It idles on about %20, so that means when I put strain on it, it only ever goes up by %10! I have not set a limit in msconfig either.
It's frustrating me why my computer isn't using all my ram. If anybody has any suggestions, let me know!
Here's an example: I open photoshop with a huge canvas (A0), and went crazy with a large brush. I've allowed PS to use %75 of my memory. PS lags heavily, yet my ram will not budge higher than 30-31%. Here is a screenshot of it. The ram is the steady blue line.
I would be extremely thankful if anybody could share any thoughts/information. Thanks

Okay, now that we've established that Photoshop is using all the RAM you've given it (which can be a lot higher on an 8 GB Windows 7 system, by the way; as much as 90%+), let's discuss the root problem you're having:
    function(){return A.apply(null,[this].concat($A(arguments)))}
    Mistle22 wrote:
...I open photoshop with a huge canvas (A0), and went crazy with a large brush...
...it would stop lagging and run smoothly...
... my Photoshop lag problem ... still persists and makes it impossible for me to work on A1 and (rarely) bigger canvases.
You've been vaguely referring to a "lag" problem...
Reading between the lines, I believe what you're saying is that if you paint on a large canvas with a large brush, you're experiencing some delays and non-interactive activity.  But no one here is a mind reader, nor are we sitting with you seeing what you're seeing.
Please take the time to specifically answer each of these questions:
Exactly what version of Photoshop are you running?
How many pixels in your "A0", and what is the bit depth?
What size brush (in pixels), and how hard (in %)?
    What is the brush Spacing?
Is it one of the fancy new brushes?
Are you painting with a tablet or mouse?
How far behind does Photoshop get (a fraction of a second? seconds?)?
Do you see the same performance issue with OpenGL enabled or disabled in Edit - Preferences - Performance.
Have you updated your video driver to ATI's latest 11.2 release from the AMD web site?
A little more detail would help us help you.
FYI, I just created an A0 sized RGB image at 150 ppi (7020 x 4965 pixels), 8 bit depth, and painted perfectly interactively on it with a 500 pixel round brush with 1% hardness and 25% Spacing.  However, there is a visible lag of up to about 1/2 second if I increase the brush size to 2500 pixels.  This is on a VERY powerful workstation with ATI 5670 card.

  • 8GB RAM but still uses scratchdisk, why?

    Hey,
running x64 version of Photoshop CS5 with windows 7 proffessional and 8gb ram but I still occasionaly (if the HDD is near full) get a "could not complete ... scratchdisk full" or similar error message (even just for simple tasks such a CtrlTransform or rotation).
It has long bugged me that it is even using a scratchdisk when it has access to 8gb ram, any explanation? It doesn't run extremely slow or anything so it can't be page filing *that* much.
    Thanks in advance

Ok, I just ran a quick test and made a new black document 300000x300000px and duplicated the base layer 10 times.
I just go to use the brush tool on one of the layers and get "could not use the brush tool because the scratchdisks are full".
Windows Taskmanager reckons photoshop is using about 300mb RAM so it shouldn't even be *thinking* about page filing yet, and as you said, HDDs are dirt cheap and it has access to more than 1.5tb worth of internal HDDs if really wants to scratchdisk...
it feels like it's limited both in it's use of ram and use of hdd but i just double checked and it is allowed ~6gb ram and all HDDs are checked to be used as scratchdisks. perplexed
*edit*: it has allocated every scrap of space to itself on every hard drive available including an external so about 2.5TB
so why didn't it use reall memory first?
*edit2:* oh but i'm starting to see what's going on, in the same way it didn't need to write all those blank layers to the hdd it didn't actually need to use all that ram, each new layer was probably just a copy on-write pointer which means my test was meaningless
