Photoshop or Illustrator for A4 printed brochures?

I prefer Photoshop for designing and I am far more experienced with it meaning I can get design jobs done quickly, but should I learn to love Illustrator (or even InDesign) for my new job designing brochures (usually no larger than A4) for print?? If so, what tutorials should I start watching to get to grips with these programes?

Use InDesign for brochures; it has superior tyypograpical control, and is made for layout work. Use Illustrator for creating graphics and logos to place in the InDesign doucment. Save Photoshop for photo editing.
Lynda.com is a good resourse, and it offers a free trail subscription. There are lots of good books available
InDesign Visual QuickStart Guide by Sandee Cohen is one often recomended here.
And once you get stated, the InDesign and Illustrator forums here are always a great resource.

  • Using Illustrator for sublimation printing.

    My 12 year old son wants to use Illustrator to create patterns for sublimation printing onto socks.  Is this the best Adobe software option?  Can it convert .pdf to . ai if his customers send us a .pdf?  Does it accept .jpeg and convert to .ai?

    You can print however you want, but a pixel-based image like a JPEG won't magically turn into vectors nor is there any guarantee that PDFs a) only contain vector data (they may hold pixel images) and b), if there is vector info, it is easily editable so you can tweak it for printing. This is potentially a whole can of worms and we haven't even talked about color management or other stuff that may be relevant. Of course everything can be learned, but it's not like you plug in your shiny printer, fire up AI and it will happen. Learning some basic techniques will be inevitable.

  • Photoshop or Illustrator - for creating digital art?

    So, I want to create digital arts like the link provided below. I just don’t know if Photoshop or Illustrator is the right tool. Money really isn’t an object when it comes to art, but uh, which one is more designed for creating digital artwork?
    Example Picture Link: http://d.facdn.net/art/thefarewelled/1304841391.thefarewelled_huey_cut_in_copy.png
    [This is not my picture and found on google images]
    Please & thanks, Much love.

    Ultimately I would say photoshop is your best bet. You can do the hard lines, shading and blending for this type of thing fairly easily in photoshop compared to illustrator if you know how. Most web comic artist I know who do their work in color usually use photoshop to produce exactly this type of look. For examples look at Katbox.net/laslindas or 2kinds.com

  • How I can work points to an image in Illustrator for Screen Printing?

    Hello, (I use Macromedia Freehand MX), I just recently download the trial illustrator, and my question is to know how to open points in Illustrator images for screen printing in freehand using the Halftone in Illustrator I've tried but is not the same as the finish is different and of very poor quality here is a sample as freehand and illustrator as stated in:
    Look at the difference of points:
    As you can see in Illustrator can only do that from the menu: Effects / Pixelate / Color Halftone... and you can not make the points more guys, not sharp as seen in the picture above and therefore the image does not get to see very well, while in freehand if you can manipulate the points from large fine to a point, points also can be made round, linear or ellipse and therefore may work better for screenprints and other designs that open nesecitan points at home.
    What I'm interested to know if there is another way to work so that the image is sharp with the open items as well as in freehand.
    No more I say goodbye to waiting for an answer, thanks

    I still do not achieve the required result in Freehand give me the points, as you may see in the picture above, I need is to manipulate fine points as well as this:
    illustrator and only managed this:
    illustrator and only managed this:
    As you can see the difference is very remarkable, the two images are worked in the same size.
    I switch to illustrator but if I can achieve that result does not help me much, since I work in screen printing and printing and need to play with points, after that I love the program has many more things freehand.
    PS: the freehand halftone used to make color separation images to full color with spots open in Illustrator is not like that.

  • Photoshop elements 12 for iMac printing undersize

    I have purchased Photoshop Elements 12 for iMac from Applestore and when I print a photo "actual size" the printout is only 93% of true size.
    I have tried to print to a Canon MP610 and a Canon MG5550 with the latest drivers installed and get the same result.
    If I print the photo from either the Apple iPhoto app. or from the Apple Preview app. the printout is the correct size.
    Just in case there was anything amiss with the photoshop Elements 12 installation I uninstalled the app. and reinstalled it and still prints are 93% of true size.
    I believe that Photoshop Elements 12 for iMac when purchased from Applestore is a special edition software.
    I am also running the latest release of Mavericks OSX operating systems for iMac.
    Any Ideas ?

    I do not believe this will help because the same thing happens with both of the printers I have and so think it is unlikely that both printers have the identical problem. I also draw your attention to an earlier reply to hatstead describing how the size reduction also applies to PDF files generated from the PSE print window. Also when an image is generated using PSE saved and then printed using another application such as Apples "Preview" the printout is printed the correct size. As mentioned earlier, the version of PSE 12 I am using is a special edition software exclusive to Apple iTunes app. store. This version does not have the photo management part of the software but includes more of the tools that come with the full photoshop version. This it has been tailored to work with Apple iPhoto. Please see iTunes app store for more info. This may mean in view of what you said that the issue may only exist in this version of the software.

  • In Need of a developer for Photoshop and Illustrator plugins

    I am in need of a developer interested in developing plugins for Photoshop and Illustrator for a specific industry of Textiles and Fashion. Please contact me if you are a developer with experience in plugin development. [email protected]

    Hmmm... I'm using JSF but it's my first project so I don't really know it's powers.
    I instantiated all classes that will eventually populate the combo box (through reflection) and now I'm trying to find one which of the objects did the user select.
    Would it be a problem for you to give me at least a rough scatch of what I should do?
    I tried it like this:
    in my managed bean:
    public HtmlSelectOneMenu getProductsMenu() {
            //instantiate and populate the list of products (prodlist)
            for (Product p : prodlist){
                optionlist.add(new SelectItem(p, p.getName()));
            final UISelectItems items = new UISelectItems();
            items.setValue(optionlist);
            productsMenu.getChildren().add(items);
            return productsMenu;
        }and in my JSP:
    <h:selectOneMenu binding="#{managedBean.productsMenu}" />but then, in the bean, when I try:
    ((Product)productsMenu.getValue())I get a Class cast exception. it says it can't can't cast String to Product...
    What am I doing wrong?
    Thank you!

  • Photoshop CS5.5 - Unable to select Open With...Photoshop or Illustrator in Windows Explorer

    Hi,
    When I am in Windows Explorer or just in a Folder and I  Right-Click  on say a .jpg file and select Open With...  I am not able  to select  Adobe Photoshop or Illustrator for that matter.  I have  Dreamweaver CS4  and that shows up as an option.  I have gone through  the process of trying to add the  Adobe Photoshop .exe file, but it  still doesn't work.  However, if I open Adobe Bridge, I am able to  select Photoshop or Illustrator to open a file.  Is this  connected to  my install or is there something else going on?  I did  uninstall an  ancient version of Adobe Photoshop 7.0 that I've had for  years, but  that was prior to installing Production Premium CS5.  Could  that have  caused an issue?  I read that uninstalling an old Photoshop  can cause  problems like this.
    If that is the case, how do I fix it.
    Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    I am running Production premium CS5 with windows7 64 bit system. On right clicking the file in explorer,I am able to choose my default programme in which the file is to be opened and it is opening accordingly.
    I have Cs4 photoshop in another system with XP professional and here also the above option is available.I wonder how u will not have that feature or how it will not work inspite of having it.___Bosu Babu

  • Background for tri-fold brochure

    I want to create a background for a tri-fold brochure. I would like use an image on the internet for the task. I noticed some of my previously used images are not supported.What image types are supported in InDesign?

    Most "images from the internet" are going to be far too low a resolution to be useful for a print brochure. Also, unless the image was purchased, or you have specific permission from its creator, you can't legally use it that way.

  • Why my Photoshop and Illustrator is not responding?

    I have Adobe Creative Suite 2 Premium. I purchased it on 2004. It was working perfectly, until recently stopped. I tried to reinstall it, but stil not responding. I used my serial number, but it doesn't recognize it. I use Photoshop and Illustrator for personal work, I don't want to pay for the new one. I want to buy the upgrated, but I'm afraid that I would have the same problem.

  • Photoshop, Illustrator, and WSD printing

    My work network is using WSD printing instead of TCP/IP printing. Illustrator and Photoshop are slow to open and save files. I read that this could be because they are searching for a network printer, which would be slower with WSD printing, no?

    I think the issue here is not that Illustrator or Photoshop are looking for a network printer but rather, they (as well as other applications) are looking for the characteristics of whatever the current default printer. If that happens to be a WSD printer and if the underlying OS support for delivering such characteristics is fraught with delays as perhaps that protocol may be trying to interrogate the device directly (possibly waking it up from a sleep mode? ), there is nothing much that you can do about it.
    One alternative is to use a different printer using a different protocol as your default print device. (Yes, I know that is ugly!) You might also query your printer's manufacturer to see if they understand the latency problem with their device and/or whether Microsoft may have a fix for their enabling code.

  • New laptop spec suggestions for Photoshop and Illustrator

    Hi Everyone!
    As I am sifting through the posts regarding laptops - I figured I'd post my own as my requirements are a little different.  I am looking to buy a new windows laptop.  I work with Photoshop and Illustrator and basic office programs like outlook, word and excel.  I have CS2 but will upgrade with the new laptop purchase - so running CS5.5 (or better) Photoshop and Illustrator is required.  I may or may not buy the whole Creative Suite as I only use these and Acrobat.  I want to spend what is required to get the job done well - not more - but I don't want to be cheap either – my laptop needs to work well & not hamper my workflow.  This will be my only computer.  Being efficient is key.  I use Adobe to do graphics for apparel: (embroideries, prints, logos, etc.) and small business (logos, print media, etc.).  I work in actual size – so a lot of what I do is on a 20 x 30 art board.  I do not work on videos – just print media and static artwork.  Suggestions on the specs I will need and/or actual laptop models would be great.  Thanks so much for your help - it is all so confusing!

  • Distressing stuff for print in illustrator - new to print (I'm a web guy)

    Howdy.  Let's say I want to make a poster.  I can whip it up in Illustrator no problem.  But what if I want to give the vector pieces a weathered or distressed look?  Does it HAVE to be done with pixels?  If so, is there a rule of thumb as to how many pixels/inch the texture should to be for printing?  I could do this in photoshop with no problems, but print is a new world for me.
    Here are some examples of posters by other folks, and I was hoping to find out how they did what they did:
    http://gigposters.com/poster/145900_X.html
    http://dribbble.com/shots/286927-Studio-Opening-Invite-Letter/attachments/10983
    http://dribbble.com/shots/234346-Maps?list=tags&tag=lettering
    I guess what I'm really asking is:
    1.  Are people using bitmap textures to add this distressed look?
    2.  Is there a way to "vectorize" distress textures?
    3.  Is there a tutorial you can point me to that might explain the "technical specs" a print designer uses when printing grungy/distressed looking stuff?
    Thanks!
    dc

    dc,
    You may use raster images as backgrounds, or you may have a look at the effects available in your version (the Effect dropdown list is/was arranged with vector effects at the top and raster effects at the bottom); there may be more backgrounds in the same artwork.
    Depending on the desired (combination of) effects, you may use Clipping Masks, Opacity Masks, Knockout, or compound Paths to get the grungy parts to show. You may look up these, and how they work, in the Helpfile.
    For more explict suggestions, you may also post in the Illustrator forum.
    The right resolution of the raster image or raster effects (Effect>Document Raster Effects Settings) depends upon the printing process and the relative size (combination of size and intended viewing distance). The long answer is to ask your printer.
