Photoshop painfully slow with lots of layers.

I've seen this before with Photoshop. I have a pretty tame PSD file, 35mb. Web design file with lots of small layers. Photoshop will go from 20% to 105% in Apple's Activity Monitor—and I'm not doing anything in Photoshop. If I try to move a single type layer with the cursor keys, for example, I get the move dialog with a progress bar. Very unresponsive overall.
I'm about to make smart objects of all my layer grous, and see if this helps, but this is a file I've worked on in the past, and photoshop was very responsive.
Larger MB files with big images seem fine.
Details:
Photoshop 13.0.4
OS X 10.8.3
Freshly wiped drive with new install of OS X and CS6.
Macbook Pro 2010, 8gb ram, 500gb, 7200 drive.
Recently just reset PRAM, Booted in SAFE mode, reset the Macs SMC.

  • Editing pdf files in Preview painfully SLOW with mavericks! Why? How to fix?

Editing pdf files in Preview is painfully SLOW with Mavericks! With mountain lion everything was so smooth .... Why? How can I fix this?

I stopped using preview. Adobe Acrobat Pro is running fine ... this is not a solution to the problem though. The question remains open: why is preview not running as before?
    Why did I upgrade?!

  • CS5 Flash and Photoshop painfully slow

I recently moved from CS4 Master Suite to CS5 Master Suite. I work with all files on a home based network drive. The CS4 handled most all tasks easily. The CS5 is painfully slow.
Publish Previewing a very small Flash file with no action script and 3 button rollovers takes 3-6 minutes to view. Opening a 1100x730px jpg in Photoshop takes 1-2 minutes and saving it is almost as slow. Ironically, Fireworks opens the same jpg in half the time.
About my set up: the network drive and a desktop PC are plugged into a Linksys G wireless router. The desktop has the same problems as both laptops in really slow Adobe tasks. None of my other programs struggle with network tasks and the CS4 Master Suite handled it fine.
Any clue why CS5 Master Collection would perform basic tasks so much slower than CS4 Master Collection using the same network?

I guess your project is quite complex (filesize for starters, maybe complex vector artwork, lots of keyframes etc.). When you save your project, Flash has to process all the objects and do the actual writing to the disc. What you can do, is break the document into smaller, separate *.fla files. You can export them as *.swf and load them at runtime or export them as *.swc libraries and include them at compile time.

  • FCPX editing on internal or external drive for small media files with lots of layers and compositing ?

I am upgrading my mid 2012 MBP with an internal SSD. I have16 RAM. OS is Mavericks.
I edit videos using a mix of photos (imported layers via photoshop), short animations, short video clips. I do some very basic stop animation also. So each media file is not heavy (photos, pics, short videos), but I do a lot of layering and compositing in FCPX.  I had a lot of delays and freezes with 5400 rpm HDD… so I decided to upgrade to SSD.
Some people have told me to edit it all on my internal SSD as the media files are not big..
Everywhere else on the web I read that all media / libraries should be on an external while I edit them. But most of these contributors are using huge video files, HD, which is not my case.
So – with small media files but lots of editing and effects  / animation, should I spend the extra money on a good external 7200 rpm USB3 to edit from ? Or just use external drive for storage and not editing.
Not going for TB as I read there would not be a difference between USB3 and TB on a 7200 rpm external drive (difference is felt when using RAID, r SSD external)
    Thanks!

I uses external SSD Thunderbolt for my all my editing stuff. I make small projects and only keeps one library at a time on my external drive. When finished I backup the library to another big external. I would strongly recommend external SSD Thunderbolt such as LaCie Rugged 256 GB or 128 GB. I use this setup with my Mac Pro late 2013. I never edit from internal. You could also go for RAID with 4 disks but that might be an overkill.

  • Macbook Air internet connection painfully slow with ethernet.....

    Hi all
I am currently staying in a serviced apartment and have a Macbook Air that I have had to connect to the in-house LAN through the USB port (someone on here was kind enough to suggest this - I'm a bit of beginner at all this!). The connection is painfully slow (it claims to be connected but pages in safari don't load, iTunes won't load etc.), but the ancient IBM pc on Windows XP conencts through the same at a good speed.
I am also in a wifi environment but my Macbook Air doesn't connect to anything - it keeps timing out (even when it can recognise several unsecured networks). Can anyone advise?

Mine is slow too! The Charter tech was here for four hours today, redoing the entire building. Every other Mac and PC here are up to speed. The new Mac Pro Octo has never been up to speed. I really don't have time to put hours into what I suspect will be a dead end. Apple needs to look into this and help us out.

  • ITunes 11 painfully slow with iPad

I "upgraded" to iTunes 11 and got a new iPad about the same time, so I'm not sure which is the problem, but doing anything with iPad is riduculously slow. Very often, if I switch tabs, app screens, etc, I get the "spinning wheel of death" - sometimes for several minutes, and the Activity monitor says iTunes is not responding.  Then it will work fine for a few minutes and happen again.  It's extremely annoying.  It seems to get better after I use it for a while,
but normally I just want to do one thing (like add a movie or rearrange the app screens) and it takes forever.  It's extremely annoying.
I have a 2.7 GHz iMac w/ 4 Gb of memory and OS 10.6.8.  According to the Activity monitor, nothing appears to be using either excessive
memory or CPU time when this happens.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Also getting similar with 5 of our macs at work running Lion with 8GB ram MBP's.. iTunes 11 is very slow with all iPads for the most simple of tasks (pushing a small video for example).
Is there an update coming soon?

  • Photoshop CC slow with Yosemite

Just got a new Macbook and Yosemite. Migrated my old stuff over. Photoshop was unbearably slow. Apple helped me a little getting rid of artifacts from old  system and versions of Photoshop, but it's still really slow. 2012 Macbook Pro, 4 GB ram. Any ideas?

  • Preview app: painfully slow with some .pdf files

I have consistently had troubles opening pdf files generated from spectrometers in my research lab. The files load slowly and Preview typically freezes to the point that it is not very useful.
These files are .pdf and not large (100kb in size). My computer is fast otherwise. I've attached a dropbox link if anyone is interested in trying to open on their computer: https://www.dropbox.com/s/b9se3ihe0izvzq1/19F%20NMR.pdf
Any ideas why I would be having this problem? Any feedback would be appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Chris
As a side note I copy and paste these pdf files to insert into Keynote and face similar slow loading (sometimes my powerpoint freezes mid presentation.)

The built-in PDF renderer has trouble with that file. You might get better results with Adobe Reader.

  • Safari painfully slow with Maverick

Safari is so slow since I installed Maverick; I don't get it. I installed Chrome which does not seem to suffer from the same problem.
    Am I the only one?
I tried to reset Safari ans clean up all history and remove all cookies: there is no difference.
    Any other suggestion?

*Note be sure to read everything first and ask questions if you don't understand something.
Here is what I did to get Safari running 100%.  Let me start by saying that some of these steps are somewhat advance and if you don't follow directions well you can break something.  I essentially removed all 3rd party plugins and reinstalled them after.
First User Specific Plugins (If you are only having this issue with one user this alone should resolve your problem):
Create a folder on the desktop call it Safari Plugins User this will be used to backup the plugins that are user specific.
Finder > Go > Hold the Option Key > Select Library
Then open Internet Plug-ins > Move any plugins found in there to the folder you created on the desktop for Safari Plugins User. (If this folder is empty then move to the System Wide Plugins).
Then System Wide Plugins (These affect every user, if you created a new test account or tried guest but still having issue with Safari this is a good idea):
Create a folder on the desktop call it Safari Plugins System this will be used to backup the plugins that affect all users.
Make sure you Quit Safari don't just close the Window.
Finder > Go > Computer > Machintosh HD (or whatever you named your startup disk) > Library > Internet Plug-Ins > You can move all of the plugins to the folder previously created on the desktop
Open Safari and see how it behaves if it works good then Quit Safari and move half of the plugins back > Reopen Safari and see if still OK if it is then move acouple more plugins back until you find the one(s) causing issue and reinstall them if applicable.
*Note personally I only moved Default Browser.plugin, Quartz Composer.webplugin and QuickTime Plugin.plugin.  Adobe Flash was installed fresh, Flip4Mac was reinstalled fresh and Silverlight was reinstalled fresh.

In addition, you also have one of the worse things for Macs since the sledgehammer--MacKeeper.

Also. Trusteer Rapport software, in spite of ongoing efforts on the part of its developer, will not play well with Safari.

IMHO, you have way too many things launching at startup. Figure out what you can manaully launch latter when needed and turn them off in System Preferences > USeres & Groups >Login items tab.
The "page-outs" for RAM is starting to creap up indicating more RAM could help. If you don't want to buy RAM, removing some apps from the log-in items can help performance.

  • Photoshop CS5.5 extended and XP sp3 PAINFULLY SLOW

I've reinstalled Photoshop to clear up the errors.
    Windows XP is fully updated.
Disk is regularly cleaned and defragged
But working in Photoshop is PAINFULLY slow with lots of processes just hanging for several minutes.  Mini-bridge will sometimes completely fail.
Running on a 1.73 GHz Intel Pentium(r) processor with 2.00 gb RAM and 40g free working space.
is this box just too old and powerless for PS to function well on it?
    thanks for any suggestions.
    e

As Noel mentions, the 2GB RAM is not going to be able to handle all that much, and with only 40GB of HDD space left, you have a bottleneck there too. First, PS's Scratch Disks will be limited, and also your Windows Virtual Memory (Page File) will need free, defragmented space to take up the slack, from the lack of RAM. My guess would be that you left the Page File on the default, and that it is being dynamically managed, so it grows and shrinks, as is needed.
When a HDD gets neare 70% capacity, it begins to slow down. The closer to capacity it gets, the slower it gets, and the closer to a failure it gets.
From a BftB (Bang for the Buck) standpoint, more RAM would be a good first step, and an additional HDD would be the next. Both RAM and HDD's are quite cheap nowadays, and in cases like this, their impact can be great. For the HDD, you would probably want to clean up C:\, storing some "stuff" onto your new D:\ (or whichever drive letter is assigned), and then locate your PS Scratch Disks there too.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • Photoshop CC - Slow layer moving

    Hi all,
    I'm experiencing something strange.
In a Photoshop Document with lots of layers grouped in folders. When I move a folder it moves slow and laggy. But when I select the layers in this folder, they move pefect.

The sittuation get worse when I try to a lot of folders full with folders...
    Any clues why this happen?

    Yeah, this is total crap.
I also have a powerful machine, running Nvidia GFX 770, 12G ram, Windows 7, etc.
I like to use the hand tool, to move about my composition. With PS CC, this takes .5 seconds for it to start moving the screen- not acceptable at all. How is it that each new version of Adobe products introduces new problems that should have never appeared?
ADOBE! STOP ADDING NEW FEATURES AND PERFECT THE ONES YOU ALREADY HAVE- you are putting out crap.

  • Brush and smudge tools painfully slow in CS5

I use CS5 on quad core 2.26ghz macpro with 32 gb RAM.  It's a clean system, both cs5 and os10.6.6 updated.  No extra plug-ins or fonts.   I do have an extra video card installed for my raid 5 system.   Only use photoshop on this computer.   Using the healing brush or smudge tool is painfully slow.  also moving layers around are slow.   I work on 10-15GB files.   My assistant works on my old G5 with 8gb of ram and since it's not an intel he's still working in CS2.   Using the healing brush on a 4GB file is faster on the G5 in CS2 than on my Quadcore in CS5.  What is going on here?  how can I speed things up?
I have cache levels set to 7, cache tile sice to 1024.

i have found that any mac pro i use - not all set up the same- if they have a nvidia card after a few hours of working there will be a slowdown of painting, cloning, smudging and screen redraw. I always have open gl off. adobe engineers have been helping now and then but no one has a solution. on the windows forum someone reportedly adjusted their video card settings to fix it. but on a mac we have to option to do that - that i know of. it is a big problem for me when using CS5 that I use CS3 when possible.

  • Kodo 2.3.0 is painfully slow

Kodo 2.3.0 is painfully slow with Oracle database. It is doing left joins
repeatable reading the same data over and over again. It is so slow that it
is virtually impossible to use. kodo 2.2.x was lightning fast to compare
    with 2.3

We use Lightroom on three workstations in our studio.
    [Production workstation]
    Alienware (2) Dual Core Opteron 285 2.61GHz
    8 megs ram
    Raid 0
    Win 7 Ultimate - 64
    NVidia GeForce GTX 260
    [Presentation workstation]
    Quadcore Dell - Vista Ulltimate
    Raid 0
    [Production workstation]
Quadcore Dell XPS 710 - Win XP Pro
    Raid 0
All three workstations are running Lightroom 3.  All are running LR3 with unacceptably slow performance when compared to LR 2.7.
I am putting LR 2.7 back on all three workstations for actual production work. A typical wedding has 3-5 thousand images to process.  This has to be done quickly.  LR 2.7 is very stable on all my systems and runs much faster than any other version of LR I have had.
LR 3.0 looks to be a fantastic program.  BUT, version 3.0 is not ready for handling real world work flow at this time.  I am looking forward to version 3.1.

  • Good Spec Mac Mini got painfully slow

    Hi All
Following reading posts on this forum, I have upgraded my 2011 Mac Mini from 4gb to 8gb Memory, but it is still painfully slow, with the spinning beach ball always in play.
I now have a Core i7, 2.7ghz Mac Mini, with 8GB DDR3 memory, 500 mb disc (with 300gb free), running OSX 10.9.1.  I run Microsoft office and Iphoto and thats pretty much it, but even using Iphoto can take seconds for ecah photo to move, and typing emails often means waiting for the text to catch up with my typing.
In my frustration I copied everything off, re formatted the hard disc, and re installed everything, but its still the same speed.  The Activity monitor shows very little CPU activity, although the memory shows as 7.87GB used out of 8GB, not sure if that is normal.
Any ideas would be really welcome, as its getting very frustrating to use, when I first purchased the MAC mini it was blindingly fast on everything.
    Thanks
    Martyn

If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. This procedure is a diagnostic  test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything suggested in this comment. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
Third-party system modifications are a common cause of usability problems. By a “system modification,” I mean software that affects the operation of other software — potentially for the worse. The procedure will help identify which such modifications you've installed, as well as some other aspects of the configuration that may be related to the problem.
Don’t be alarmed by the seeming complexity of these instructions — they’re easy to carry out. Here's a brief summary: In each of two steps, you copy a line of text from this web page into a window in another application. You wait about a minute. Then you paste some other text, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page. The sequence is copy; paste; paste again. That's all there is to it. Details follow.
You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken while booted in “normal” mode. If the system is now running in safe mode and is bootable in normal mode, reboot as usual. If it only boots in safe mode, use that.
Below are instructions to enter UNIX shell commands. They do nothing but produce human-readable output. However, you need to think carefully before running any program at the behest of a stranger on a public message board. If you question the safety of the procedure suggested here — which you should — search this site for other discussions in which it’s been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them.
The commands will line-wrap or scroll in your browser, but each one is really just a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, and you can then copy it.
If you have more than one user account, Step 2 must be taken as an administrator. Ordinarily that would be the user created automatically when you booted the system for the first time. Step 1 should be taken as the user who has the problem, if different. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this paragraph doesn’t apply.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
When you launch Terminal, a text window will open with a line already in it, ending either in a dollar sign (“$”) or a percent sign (“%”). If you get the percent sign, enter “sh” and press return. You should then get a new line ending in a dollar sign.
    Step 1
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:
    PB=/usr/libexec/PlistBuddy; PR () { [[ "$o" ]] && o=$(sed 's/^/   /' <<< "$o") && printf '\n%s:\n\n%s\n' "$1" "$o"; }; PC () { o=$(grep [^[:blank:]] "$2"); PR "$1"; }; PF () { o=$($PB -c Print "$2" | awk -F'= ' \/$3'/{print $2}'); PR "$1"; }; PN () { [[ $o -eq 0 ]] || printf "\n%s: %s\n" "$1" $o; }; { system_profiler SPSoftwareDataType | sed '8!d;s/^ *//'; o=$(system_profiler SPDiagnosticsDataType | sed '5,6!d'); fgrep -q P <<< "$o" && o=; PR "POST"; o=$(($(vm_stat | awk '/Pageo/{sub("\\.",""); print $2}')/256)); o=$((o>=1024?o:0));  PN "Pageouts (MiB)"; s=( $(sar -u 1 10 | sed '$!d') ); [[ ${s[4]} -lt 90 ]] && o=$( printf 'User %s%%\t\tSystem %s%%' ${s[1]} ${s[3]} ) || o=; PR "Total CPU usage"; [[ "$o" ]] && o=$(ps acrx -o comm,ruid,%cpu | sed '2!d'); PR "Max %CPU by process (name, UID, %)"; o=$(kextstat -kl | grep -v com\\.apple | cut -c53- | cut -d\< -f1); PR "Loaded extrinsic kernel extensions"; o=$(launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.apple|org\.(x|openbsd)|\.[0-9]+$/{print $3}'); PR "Loaded extrinsic user agents"; o=$(launchctl getenv DYLD_INSERT_LIBRARIES); PR "Inserted libraries"; PC "cron configuration" /e*/cron*; o=$(crontab -l | grep [^[:blank:]]); PR "User cron tasks"; PC "Global launchd configuration" /e*/lau*; PC "Per-user launchd configuration" ~/.lau*; PF "Global login items" /L*/P*/loginw* Path; PF "Per-user login items" L*/P*/*loginit* Name; PF "Safari extensions" L*/Saf*/*/E*.plist Bundle | sed 's/\..*$//;s/-[1-9]$//'; o=$(find ~ $TMPDIR.. \( -flags +sappnd,schg,uappnd,uchg -o ! -user $UID -o ! -perm -600 \) | wc -l); PN "Restricted user files"; cd; o=$(find -L /S*/L*/E* {,/}L*/{A*d,Compon,Ex,In,Keyb,Mail/Bu,P*P,Qu,Scripti,Servi,Spo}* -type d -name Contents -prune | while read d; do ID=$($PB -c 'Print :CFBundleIdentifier' "$d/Info.plist") || ID=; ID=${ID:-No bundle ID}; egrep -qv "^com\.apple\.[^x]|Accusys|ArcMSR|ATTO|HDPro|HighPoint|driver\.stex|hp-fax|JMicron|microsoft\.MDI|print|SoftRAID" <<< $ID && printf '%s\n\t(%s)\n' "${d%/Contents}" "$ID"; done); PR "Extrinsic loadable bundles"; o=$(find /u*/{,*/}lib -type f -exec sh -c 'file -b "$1" | grep -qw shared && ! codesign -v "$1"' {} {} \; -print); PR "Unsigned shared libraries"; o=$(system_profiler SPFontsDataType | egrep "Valid: N|Duplicate: Y" | wc -l); PN "Font problems"; for d in {,/}L*/{La,Priv,Sta}*; do o=$(ls -A "$d"); PR "$d"; done; } 2> /dev/null | pbcopy; echo $'\nStep 1 done'
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Then click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting.
The command may take up to a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. Wait for the line "Step 1 done" to appear below what you entered. The output of the command will beautomatically copied to the Clipboard. All you have to do is paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-Vagain. Please don't copy anything from the Terminal window. No typing is involved in this step.
    Step 2
Remember that you must be logged in as an administrator for this step. Do as in Step 1 with this line:
    PR () { [[ "$o" ]] && o=$(sed 's/^/   /' <<< "$o") && printf '\n%s:\n\n%s\n' "$1" "$o"; }; { o=$(sudo launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.(apple|openssh|vix\.cron)|org\.(amav|apac|calendarse|cups|dove|isc|ntp|post[fg]|x)/{print $3}'); PR "Loaded extrinsic daemons"; o=$(sudo defaults read com.apple.loginwindow LoginHook); PR "Login hook"; o=$(sudo crontab -l | grep [^[:blank:]]); PR "Root cron tasks"; o=$(syslog -k Sender kernel -k Message CReq 'GPU |hfs: Ru|I/O e|find tok|n Cause: -|NVDA\(|pagin|timed? ?o' | tail -n25 | awk '/:/{$4=""; print}'); PR "Log check"; } 2>&- | pbcopy; echo $'\nStep 2 done'
This time you'll be prompted for your login password, which you do have to type. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. Type it carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. Heed that warning, but don't post it. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
You can then quit Terminal. Please note:
☞ Steps 1 and 2 are all copy-and-paste — type only your login password when prompted.
☞ When you type your password, you won't see what you're typing.
☞ If you don’t have a password, set one before taking Step 2. If that’s not possible, skip the step.
☞ Step 2 might not produce any output, in which case the Clipboard will be empty. Step 1 will always produce something.
☞ The commands don't change anything, and merely running them will do neither good nor harm.
☞ Remember to post the output of both steps (unless you had to skip Step 2.) It's already in the Clipboard after you complete each step. You don't have to copy it. Just paste into a reply
☞ If any personal information, such as your name or email address, appears in the output of either command, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
☞ Don't post what you see in the Terminal window. The output is copied automatically to the Clipboard.
☞ Don't paste the output of Step 1 into the Terminal window. Paste it into a reply.
