Photoshop PDF

If I save a file as a Photoshop PDF with preserve Photoshop layers clicked, do I need to save the original PSD file as well? I'm importing the PDF into Indesign to get vector output from my photoshop file. But I'm unsure about whether I need to save the original PSD.
Thanks.

I don't think, that it is necessary, to save your PDF additionally as PSD.
All file infomation are included in the PDF.
I've used PDF only for several projects and everything worked fine.

• Printing Photoshop PDF

I am on a rented iBook G4, just got my iMac today but have not hooked it up yet --too busy. I'm on a deadline and am trying to print a Photoshop PDF to Adobe Acrobat PDF that I can to email to a number of people. I have been on a B & W G3 for seven years and have been using a program called "Print to PDF". Now I am hopelessly lost in OSX, which I will start learning after I get this project done this weekend. I created a Photoshop PDF in Photoshop CS2 and it's about 25 MB in size. I saved it as a Photoshop PDF and followed what I thought was the path and it seemed to print it; it opened in Acrobat reader but when I tried to attach it, it was even larger! It has a ton of layers but usually they save as 6-700 KB in my previos program in Classic.
Obviously, I have no idea what I am doing and need some simple explanation to compress this 8 X 10 page full of pictures and type into a reasonably sized PDF the way I used to!!!
Forever grateful; I did search the site but didn't find what I needed to know.

Gasketgirl, On top of flattening the layers, then saving as a Photoshop PDF, you can reopen the file in Acrobat and using the advanced menu, look for an option called 'Optimize PDF'. This option (and there are many more options once you open the dialogue) allows you to compress the file, downsample (I don't suggest you do this) and remove application specific data. Don't save the file after Optimizing as the optimizing itself is a save option. Resaving again removes much of the Optimization you just did!!!

• How do i stop photoshop cs4 from quitting unexpectedly when saving a photoshop pdf? i attempted to download the adobe drive 5 but the installation keeps failing.

How do i stop photoshop cs4 from quitting unexpectedly when saving a photoshop pdf? i attempted to download the adobe drive 5 but the installation keeps failing. I went through the process of clicking through the how to's and the troubleshooting and came to the conclusion that I need to install the adobe drive 5 but I can not complete the installation. I may be incorrect on this so I need immediate assistance as I have poster and ad deadlines. I also tried disabling the gatekeeper and solution 3 on the troubleshooting of slow saving on photoshop.
Any help is much appreciated!
Thank you!

Are you attempting to save the file to a network location instead of your local hard drive? If so, this is probably why you are encountering an issue and why Adobe Drive would be the solution. As we've documented, it is a bad idea to open from or save directly to a network source: Networks, removable media | Photoshop | CS4 and later. Drive can help you get around this by setting up an Adobe supported virtual connection to the network. Thus, if installing Adobe Drive is the solution you need and your need help with installing Drive, please post to the Downloading, Installing, Setting Up forum.
If you are not saving to a network location, then Adobe Drive is not going to be the answer. Then we'll need to know more about the file you are saving.

• Bug Report:  "View PDF After Saving" Does Not Work When Saving as Photoshop PDF

The saved PDF file is not opening in Acrobat after saving a file as a Photoshop PDF. I noticed it happening a few times in earlier beta testing, but today it happened again.
I have Adobe Acrobat Pro 10.1.2 installed on MacPro with Lion OS 10.7.3. Photoshop public beta m415.  System info can be provided if needed.
The file I was trying to save was about 8 MB. Once it failed to open after save, I tried varied PDF settings and save locations. Also tried several different files. All were saved properly as PDF files, but would not continue to open in Acrobat as previous versions have done. The files open properly when you click on the file names in saved location.

I'm happy I could help and feel a bit proud to have found a real bug. The simplest work around is just clicking on the file list once it's done...that's certainly not a problem.

• Save as Photoshop PDF Scratch disk locked?

I searched  the forums, but apparently my issue only crops up when someone tries to launch PS. I can launch and do everything else just fine; however, I attempted to save as > PDF and received the scratch disk locked message. I can successfully save as PDF if I use the launch as admin option, but this seems odd since I can do everything else just fine without the need to do that.
Here are my steps:
Save as > Photoshop PDF
Click OK on "The settings you choose in the Save Adobe PDF dialog can override your current settings...."
I change nothing in the Save Adobe PDF dialog. I simply click Save PDF.
Select Yes for "Preserve Photoshop Editing Capabilities" in the prompt.
Here is where I get the error message.
"Could not open a scratch file because the file is locked, you do not have necessary access permissions, or another program is using the file. Use the 'Properties' command in the Windows Explorer to unlock the file."
At this point, Photoshop does not crash or exit. It just simply will not save the file. This is the first time I've tried to save as  PDF, so it could just be a user error > replace user situation. :d
I have tried the CTRL + Shift + Alt method of launching to wipe my preferences only to have the same result. My scratch disk is an internal drive used only as storage with 1.30 TB available.
Photoshop CS6 Extended
Windows 7 64bit
User account is an admin, but I have never had a need to launch PS as an admin specifically.
Thanks in advance.

Checked my permissions on C:\Users\***\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Adobe PDF\Settings and everything is fine.
Taking that info and some google work I came across this: http://help.adobe.com/en_US/photoshop/cs/using/WS23B45D06-1977-4006-8BEB-2DBB08CA502Ea.htm l#WSA79FA899-BC95-401e-BD44-5B26BC31B369
Apparently, there should be PDF settings files in C:\Users\***\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Adobe PDF\Settings; however, my folder was empty, but the article above also says to move them from an 'Extras' folder located within ProgramData. Copied the settings over, tried again, same result.
Am I supposed to have Acrobat installed for this to work properly? I don't have Acrobat, nor do I even use Reader (I use a different program for in-browser PDF).
//edit
Apparently it was in my settings on the PDF save dialog. I removed the settings that I moved over and tried again. This time I actually fiddled with the settings and used Smallest File Size instead of HQ Print, and that seemed to have worked. Messed with things some more, and narrowed it down to the Preserve Photoshop Editing Capabilities option. As long as that option is UN-checked, then everything works smoothly, including HQ quality.

• How to save a Photoshop PDF file with fonts that can be detected in Acrobat?

We created a PDF file using Photoshop CS5, for the purpose of using it as a watermark on documents.  We saved this file as Photoshop PDF file, but for some reason the fonts cannot be detected when the file is opened in Adobe Acrobat.
We need it to be recognized by Acrobat so that we can easily add the watermark to documents on a regular basis.
Right now, Acrobat cannot detect the fonts in this file -- even though it is a basic font like Arial -- so when we add the watermark to a document, the fonts in the watermark becomes very degraded in appearance.
Any advice would be hugely appreciated!

I've tried several settings when saving as a PDF, to try to produce a file with fonts that can be detected by Acrobat.  I tried the presets listed in guide: Photoshop Help | Saving PDF files
But none have worked.
I cannot use PNG because it is not one of the formats that Acrobat allows for a watermark.  And JPG doesn't work because I need transparency.

• Photoshop CS4 can't save as Photoshop PDF

I am trying to save a multi-layer Photoshop CS4 document as a Photoshop PDF file with embedded color profile. Everything is set to the default except for compatibility which I set as Acrobat 5 (PDF 1.4) . The progress bar for writing the file proceeds as normal until the very end at which point it gives an error.
It is very inconsistent as some documents I can save just fine and others I get the following error:
"Could not save as "RPS Poster" because of a program error."
This is very frustrating as it has no rhyme or reason. One file I was able to fix the problem by re-creating one of the layers. I have had many other problems with CS4 running on Snow Leopard and it appears that the CS4 Design suite was not fully tested before its release.

I have had many other problems with CS4 running on Snow Leopard and it appears that the CS4 Design suite was not fully tested before its release.
Yeah, funny how Adobe failed to test their programs on an OS that wasn’t out when they released the suite …
Have You updated all components to the latest versions yet?
As for the pdf-problem:
What are these default settings exactly?
What are the layers that may be the culprits – normal pixel layers, type, adjustments, groups, smart objects, …?
Have You tried saving without »Preserve Photoshop Editing Capabilities« (naturally one should then additionally keep the layered psd)?
And as with all unexplainable Photoshop-problems You might try trashing the prefs (after making sure all customized presets like Actions, Patterns, Brushes etc. have been saved and making a note of the Preferences You’ve changed) by pressing command-alt-shift on starting the program or starting from a new user-account.

• Photoshop PDF wont open in Reader at Service Bureaus

I have rasterized 6 illustrator files in Photoshop and saved as PDFs. They display fine on 3 computers at home in Reader. But when i go to kinkos or Alpha Graphics a blank page appears with an error message about a drawing problem when opened in Reader. However the photoshop pdfs will open in photoshop at the service bureaus, but not in Reader. i went home and carefully converted and saved AI files as Photoshop PSD and took care to put them on flash drive correctly and eject usb volume the right way. I have never had this problem before and service bureau employees were stumped. they figured just resaving, renaming and being carefull with flash drive would solve problem, but no.

same problem with 10.1.6 and it seems more to do with links with % in the url ... first time no problem, sencond time it can not find the page for some reason or a popup occours saying that i need to close Acrobat Reader if it is still opened somewhere.

• Photoshop pdfs change canvas size when being viewed in Acrobat

Hi, I am an issue when with saving photoshop pdfs from photoshop cc. They look good when they are in photoshop but when I save them to a pdf and then try to view them in acrobat the page size changes. Usually it defaults to 8.5 by 11 regardless of the size I set up in Photoshop. Does any one know why this might be? I am using Photoshop cc and Acrobat 11 pro. I've seen this same problem happen to several of my clients as well.

How are you determining the page size in Acrobat? Please post a screenshot. If you have the word scaled up in your filename, you may have to do a view >> pixel aspect ratio >> square
IN acrobat dod a Commadn R to show rulers, is your file 8.5" x 11". This actually sound like a view settings problem in acorn bat, btiu not sure

• Photoshop PDF resolution and color space difference: Acrobat vs. Photoshop?

I have received several Photoshop PDFs from different sources. In Acrobat, the document properties indicate the PDF producer as Adobe Photoshop for macintosh -- Image Conversion Plug-in. When checking the image either with PitStop or through Photoshop via Acrobat's Touch up object tool, the image shows as a 100 dpi RGB image. If the PDF is opened directly in Photoshop, Photoshop indicates it is 300 dpi and CMYK.
Does anyone know why there is this difference? Also what is the Image Conversion Plug-in and how does it work?

Ah, sorry; in that case possibly the Preserve Photoshop Editing Capabilities-button was hit (thus including the original psd-file) but a low-res-pdf-setting selected.
In which case the original data would appear to be CMYK and of a higher resolution that the pdf-images.

• Can't make Photoshop PDF with editable / vector text.

Hi,
I'm trying to File > Save As an Adobe Photoshop CS6 PDF and then be able to open it and edit the text in Adobe Acrobat X.
Whenever I attempt to edit the text it is a raster image and it doesnt matter what I do in the photoshop pdf settings.
I want to be able to do this so that the text is able to be searched by google / search engines when I make the PDF available online.
-Steve.

That what I did by using CS6 and it worked for me. Hope it helps you too
Step1) Moved All Graphics (Images/Backgrounds) in one folder (Folder-Layers)
Step2) Moved All texts (title, Headings, main text etc.) in another folder (Folder-Text)
Step3) Merge the first folder (Folder-Layers) and made a single layer by right click & Merge Group
OR Select folder > Layer > Rasterize > Layer
Now I have only one Background Layer (Graphics) and a text folder
Step4) Go to - File > Save As > Choose Photoshop PDF –
Check* Use Proof Setup: Working CMYK then SAVE (If you want print)      You will get a message “The settings you choose in the save Adobe PDF dialog can override your    Current settings in the Save As dialog box. “- OK
Step 5) Save Adobe PDF Dialogue Box
                  Choose settings-
Adobe PDF Preset: Adobe PDF Preset 1
Standard:        PDF/X-4:2010
Compatibility:    Acrobat 7(PDF 1. 6)
General
Check- Optimize for fast Web Preview
Check- View PDF after Saving
Compression
Just change Compression box None (No Zip, No JPEG., No JPEG2000)
Don’t touch any settings. and then SAVE PDF
Then open in Acrobat Reader and do the text changes.

• Font in Photoshop PDF help is too small

Font in Photoshop PDF help is too small.
http://helpx.adobe.com/pdf/photoshop_reference.pdf
How can i ask photoshop developers to increase it?
How can i increase it before print?

It's standard 11pt type for the most part, so I don's see how it could be too small. Simply use the zoom options in Acrobat/ Adobe Reader, if you have difficulty reading it. There is no way to actually increase the font size and have the document reflow.

• Trouble printing Photoshop PDFs in InDesign

Hi, I'm using some Photoshop PDFs placed in InDesign.  I can export to PDF just fine, but if I print to PDF the image drops out (just becomes a black square).  Any ideas on this?  I need to print to PDF to follow my printer's instructions (unfortunately).  Though it's also black if I print to the Adobe PDF printer (rather than my printer's supplied virtual printer). I could switch the file to a TIF, but I hate to rasterize it.  Should I try backsaving to an earlier version of Photoshop (if that's even possible)?
I'm using InDesign CS4 and Photoshop CS4.  I think it's the first time I've tried PDFs from Photoshop CS4 (last magazine issue I had upgraded to InDesign CS4 but was still using Photoshop CS3).
I'm on Windows Vista.
Thanks, Phyllis

No, OPI is off, though that was a good guess!
Any other ideas?
I'm trying to find a way to downsave to Photoshop CS3 but don't see it.  Do you happen to know if that's an option?  (I realize this isn't a Photoshop forum but hate to split up the question.)
Thanks, Phyllis

• Opening Photoshop PDF in Illustrator problem

Hi,
I've got a problem with opening pdf file from photoshop in illustrator. I've got a psd file with a rasterized background (photo) and about 100 shape layers over it. I'm trying to save it as a photoshop pdf to keep the vector elements unflattened for use in illustrator. The saved pdf is about three times larger than the original psd file. Then I'm trying to open the pdf in illustrator but I get a message that illustrator can't preview it. It only shows the outline of the shapes. Do you know how can I save this pdf to be able to work on it in illustrator? or maybe some trick to copy all of the shapes at once from photoshop to illustrator with correct placement? Thank you in advance:)
Mark

Thanks a lot for your help guys. The option with opening psd file in illustrator works best:)
I've tried opening pdf before but it seems to work fine when there are just a few simple shapes.
@Mylenium: I didn't have different blending modes, only normal. One rasterized layer as background and about 100 shapes layers above. Most of them being text layers converted to shapes. Nothing too fancy:)
I've also thought that different opacities might be the problem but I've saved one pdf with different opacities and the other one with every layer at 100% opacity and both pdf files had exactly the same size and both couldn't be opened.
Thanks again and have a nice day,
Mark

• A Photoshop PDF doesn't look the same inside a PDF Portfolio

Hi,
I have a Photoshop PDF file that looks good on screen and includes re-touching I did to it. However, when I place it in a PDF portfolio, the edits aren't there anymore.
Anyone know what might be going on?
Thanks!

Short of you having used the wrong file, I can't think of much... Computers aren't sentient and can't do these kinds of things...

• White Box in Photoshop PDFs

When I import a Photoshop PDF into my indesign file, I get a white box in back of it. (I made sure when importing that the preserve transparency box is checked in the import dialog in InDesign.) The logo I am importing has one raster object inside of it and the rest is all vector. I tried deleting out the raster object and then re-importing into InDesign. The white box goes away when I do this. Is it not possible to have a raster object inside of a Photoshop PDF and still keep the transparency?
What did I wrong?

U must be using IN CS 2. You need to create an Alpha mask and apply it as a clipping.
OR
You have a Spot channel in your image. It will not work cuz its still not fixed - even in CS3 products.
Besides that, The Photoshop PDF file format has a confusing bug in it that allows you to save the document after creation but during edit - does not apply the changes so you think you saved the file, but you have not. Then it throws up a dialog telling you that you need to save the file in a different format because you can not save the file with all the features you are trying to do.
Compiled by the fact that you can't turn a Spot channel back into a Alpha channel just creates a cluster for you in the end to try and work around the problem.
