Photoshop & quark
I recently purchased a Macbook Pro with Snow Leopard. I sucked the info out of my imac which is running 10.5 to set it up. When I tried to open Photoshop, the icon in my dock jumps once and does nothing else. I couldn't get it to open. I just installed cs5. The install was successful, but it still won't open.
Next, I tried to open Quark 7.5 and a message comes up before it opens and says that Quark suddenly quit.
Any ideas???
Thanks for clarifying. WRT to CS5 not installing on the new machine, try to completely uninstall it, including anything in your Preferences folder and the various Application Support folders, then reinstall.
WRT to file extensions, Apple mucked things up, deleting the ability to open by creator code, relying exclusively on file extensions. If you want to report this issue to Apple's engineering, send a bug report or an enhancement request via its Bug Reporter system. To do this, join the Mac Developer Program—it's free and available for all Mac users and gets you a look at some development software. Since you already have an Apple username/ID, use that. Once a member, go to Apple BugReporter and file your bug report or enhancement request. The nice thing with this procedure is that you get a response and a follow-up number; thus, starting a dialog with engineering.
Alternatively, send Feedback, but that usually goes through support and marketing, although when it'll get to engineering is anyone's guess.

CS4 InDesign Slow with files opened from shared drive
We have an issue that I can't seem to figure out...
I have six different people using Word files and InDesign files that are being opened from a server. When going from Word into InDesign (or vise verse) it takes a few seconds for the cursor to become active; however if the user is copying text from Word to any other Adobe product (Illustrator, Photoshop, Quark) no lag at all. They are also all getting a PDF creation failed when trying to save to the server (error is attatched).
It's not a specific file because all six people have the same issue, and they're all working on separate projects.
It's not machine specific since (again) all six Macs have the issue.
Obviously it's an InDesign issue, but what, and why all of a sudden?
Any help would GREATLY be appreciated. My first guess would be that the client OS version could be apart of it - small changes to the SMB client in 10.6 could explain it. I'd also be interested in looking at the firewall issue. It may well be a combination of both.
I think said earlier that working locally was not a problem, so you've already done the first logical test. Next, I'd think about trying the following, the order of which I'd base on their level of difficulty:
Temporarily put one of the problematic client machines inside the firewall (or the server outside of it, though I assume that would be harder/impossible)
Either upgrade one the of the problematic machines to 10.6.2, or create a Snow Leopard boot system with InDesign installed (on an external drive?) from which you can boot the machine
I'm sure getting rid of the firewall is not a long term solution, but it would be good to know for future reference whether the firewall is involved. Would upgrading to Snow Leopard be in the cards if it does seem to fix it? -
What would cause monitors to turn blue?
i was sitting here reading emails, chatting on yahoo and was getting ready to work on some ad files. all the sudden both my monitors just showed blue. nothing else. i had several programs running... Illustrator, Photoshop, Quark, Distller, Font Suitcase, Text Edit, Mail, Messenger... but this is a typical day for me and has been for several years now and i've never had anything like this happen before. the monitors came back briefly then went to blue again so i just did a hard shut down, restarted and so far seems ok. i ran disk utilities and repaired permissions. but does anyone have any thoughts as to why this would happen?
I feel 3GB of RAM is to low for all the demands you are putting on your machine. I have 5GB and I don't do anywhere near the Apps. open, all at once, as you do.
I added Crucial RAM (install in pairs only). Extremely Mac friendly RAM.It might pay to run your Apple Hardware Test also.

I'm running Leopard (10.5.4) and InDesign CS3 (Version 5.0.3.662). InDesign sometimes won't "Hide" (Command+H or Option+Click on Desktop) and if by some miracle it does hide, then it won't Unhide. I have to Force Quit and restart it. Never have that problem with anything else I use: Illustrator, Photoshop, Quark, Word, Excel, Lotus Notes, Firefox, etc. Is this a bug? Or is there any way to make it behave?
FWIW, I don't think this is entirely a Leopard issue as we are having the same problem with Tiger PPC installs. Have not tried the Launch, quit, launch workaround....but cmon, really?
To clarify the problem being seen... On G5 PPC, Mac OS 10.4.11, InDesign CS3 will not release the active finder window. By this I mean it will not let you minimize it, hide it, or use any other application without having to quit or click to the desktop numerous times. As soon as you get out of it, it will pop back to the front....try to edit an original in Photoshop and InDesign will not let you into Photoshop. Apple Tab to Photoshop, InDesign will pop up as soon as you are dropped into Photoshop. You get the picture...
Not happening on 10.5 Intel builds. -
Illustrator File Document Mode How to change the default?
Does anyone know how to change the default to RGB?
And, can anyone help explain why, when I put an .eps (logo) into a QUark 8 file and upload as PDF through distiller, the .eps file appears with a partial white box behind it - i need transparency. Is it a one bit eps file, that is one color?
EPS is not a transparent format.
Have you tried Photoshop Quark 8 I believe supports photoshop files with transparent background. I believe.
Try exporting it as a psd. I also believe that Quark 8 supports .ai files as well.

Yes it's another Mavericks slowing down my laptop thread :)
Hi there
I recently installed Mavericks, just before Xmas in fact, and noticed how slow it was from the start. Now I'm back at work, it's killing me!
First off, I had lots of problems with Mail, and something to do with Keychain (forgive me, laptop is a tool, I don't really understand how it works). I managed to get that working, although, I must say it still is slow at collecting mail from my various accounts.
Word, well that's just hysterical. I can sit and type a few lines, sit back and watch Word catch up with me over a minute or so, then have to go back and correct my terrible typing, it's painful and un-usable. I have noted on here to rebuild my Office Database, which I've done, and it appeared to have no problems.
So what to do? I heard about EtreCheck so have run that and will paste results below, I'm hoping that someone will spot something there that is really obvious and return me to fact Mac nirvana.
I'm on a 2011 MacBook Pro, 2.8ghz Intel Core i7, 4GB RAM. i don't have lots of 3rd party stuff installed, but do run Photoshop, Quark, Office and a few other apps.
Here's hoping for help, and thanks in advance!
Jonny

About memory management in OSX 10.9 Mavericks
Memory is managed differently, and more efficiently in 10.9. It is (mostly) unique in the industry, but may become trend.
Let’s start with the basics. Mechanical disk drives are very slow, with access speeds in the 10s of milliseconds and transfer rates in the 200-400 Mbps range real world. SSDs are much faster, on the order of a couple of ms access and typically 1200-3000 mbps transfer rates. RAM is much faster than either, in the nanosecond access and transfer speeds of ~8 Gbps effective (1 GHz x 8 bits/byte).
These are rough numbers for comparison purposes only.
So the goal is to keep as much in RAM as possible. But if you run out of RAM what do you do?
Traditionally you take the least used RAM and write it to a special part of the disk, in a way that you can access it most efficiently - minimizing the disk delays. This is called a swap file because you swap RAM in and out of it.
10.9 has a new trick: it compresses RAM using the main processors. Rather than swapping stuff to disk (disks are slow), it actually uses the processor to compress memory and make, for example, 1 GB of physical RAM hold as much as 1.5GB. Similar approaches are used to make MP3 files 10x smaller than the real thing - there is redundancy in data and you can take advantage of that. Apple is making the following calculation: the processors can compress way faster than the disk can swap. And its also predicting that the processors are often partly idle - waiting for swap files or disk access. So rather than swap files around, its compresses the files ***in RAM***.
Compression works,. Tests show that on average it is faster, and that 4GB (i have 4 GB RAM) acts like 5 1/2 - 6GB. Wow.
So, 10.9 will load up most of your RAM, knowing that it can compress some when it needs to. So don’t worry too much that it may look like all your RAM is taken - yea, it is, but its OK.
The measures to look at are:
1. amount compressed. Compression means it has run out of RAM and needs more. As long as compression is low this is fine. In fact this is how 10.9 uses RAM more efficiently than 10.6,7 or 8. Contrary to common wisdom, it requires LESS RAM than 10.8. The colored indicator tells you who this is going - green (good), yellow( iffy) and red (bad).
2. amount swapped. Once it cannot compress any further, or can’t do so efficiently, jot begins old-fashioned swapping. This is a major slow-down and means you would benefit from more RAM. Tiny amounts are OK.
here's an article by Apple - but on th pre-10.9 memory management techniques....mostly still true, but read on.
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1342?viewlocale=en_US
Bottom line - compression makes 10.9 use RAM more efficiently than previous OSX versions. It also makes the “ram used” indicator less meaningful, and mans you should monitor “compression” .
That said, RAM has always been one of the most cost effective upgrades possible. People spend too much on new machines and too little on more RAM.
Hope this helps,

Loss of Image Info on Cinema Display
I recently jumped to a 2 year old G5 and 20" cinema display combo and am getting screwed.
Basically, my screen is not showing me what's actually going on with the files. The screen seems too contrasty / punchy / hot... I'm a graphic designer, and since I need to be able to (at least marginally) view on screen what information is in a file, this has made image manipulation nearly IMPOSSIBLE. My epson printouts DO show me this "lost" information, but I certainly can't work off of printouts alone for the life of this machine.... In the meantime, areas of an image that are as dark as 10 or 20% grey are showing up on screen as PURE WHITE. And this is probably only the loss that glaring enough for me to notice... (Although, when I watched a movie the other day, the blacks also felt WAY too dense, and seemed to eat many of the scenes...)
I've tried every calibration option the ACD seems to offer, to no avail. I've checked to make sure my video card works with my monitor, as answered in the affirmative with the following thread:
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1125196&tstart=0
At this point I don't know if the problem is in my G5, or the monitor, or what....
Can anyone help?
Some more information that may be helpful/relevant:
1) The "hotness" is not application specific. It occurs in Photoshop, Quark, in PDFs, everywhere....
2) The G5 was refurbished when originally purchased.
3) Before I jumped to this set-up a few weeks ago, I was on a very reliable emac running OS9 (no snickering please...) and what I saw on the screen there was pretty bang-on with what I was seeing in my print outs and final files.
4) I'm using the same printer and scanning devises that I was with my emac, so I don't think they're the problem... but JIC, they are Epson Perfection 1640SU Scanner, and Epson Stylus photo 1270 Photo Printer.
Let me know If I've left out any key, relevant info.... And Thanks!Make sure the "Enhance contrast" slider in the "Seeing" tab of "Universal Access" system preference is all the way to the left.

Can't print Landscape in IDCS3
I'm using Leopard and can happily print Landscape format to my Espon printer in Illustrator, photoshop, quark and even InDesign CS2 - but it will not adjust the page to print landscape in IDCS3, just keep printing across a portrait page and missing half the image off - is there a work round, fix, alternative?? Please help
The color should be identical. Make sure to set Acrobat's color
management identically to InDesign's.
FWIW, I never print from InDesign anyway since I always send PDFs to the
printer so it's the PDFs that matter.

Installing tiger from os 10.2.8
Hey. My system stats are iMac (dome with flat screen)256mb 800mhz powerpc g4. I am running on 10.2.8 currently. here is my dilemma, I just bought an ipod..so imma have to upgrade to tiger so that my expensive ipod purchase wont be in vain...
okay my question is:
(oh and Im not computer savvy in anyway..so im hoping *crossing fingers* that the installation of Tiger is pain free)
okay.. 1)Before i install tiger, what exactly do i have to back up?
and 2) will i loose the applications currently running on my computer ie photoshop/quark express/office etc..
3)what is the best way for me to back up? dvd? cd?
4) will i loose everything on my computer that i dont back up
5)is there a possibility that i can mess this up real bad and ruin what i got goin right now (10.2.8)what about my pics in iphoto or my music in itunes?
These are located in your home folder by default, as are all of your other files and most of your preferences.
oh and will the disk ask me if i want to erase and install or upgrade?
Yes.

[MAC newbie]: Concerns about moving to MAC from Windows
Hello.
I want to upgrade my PC.
I'm having thoughts of moving from Windows to Macintosh (Mac Pro), but there are a few things that concern me.
I use my PC to do these things (in a more or less exact order):
1. InDesign, Photoshop, Quark XPress
2. Internet browsing
3. MS Office
4. Video games
5. Music, movies.
Now I know I can do all these things on a Mac as well, except solving the troubles with Video games.
My PC upgrade would cost me around 200 EU max (video card + some ram), while the cheapest Mac Pro I found on Amazon is about 600 EU + shipping taxes.
Could anyone tell me what is it that Mac Pro desktop or Mac mini desktop have that would make me invest in it instead of simply upgrading my PC?
Is there a "secret ingredient" about those MAC machines or is just a simple overpriced hype?
Thank you for taking time reading this and for any help.
Best regards,

Of course, and so you should in order make a balanced judgement. You also need to look at the inevitable costs of replacing/updating your software applications if you change to a Mac.
If I was in your shoes I would stick with upgrading what you have, but I hope you end up with whatever works for you! -
Quicktime 7.1.1 Crashes everything...
I am stuck in the water. Been reading all of these threads:
Tried reinstalling 7.0.4 using Pacifist,
Then downgraded to 7.0.1 using Apple supplied installer.
I can open software, but when I go to the open or save dialog boxes it crashes instantly. This is true for Photoshop, Quark, InDesign, Imageready, Freehand....those are the ones I've tried.
I can't locate a 7.1 installer...my computer was working fine then.
Any help would be much appreciated guys!

Here'a a crash log...sorry it's the whole thing...wasn't sure which part was important:

Hi-I'm trying to disable balloon tips in my applications like Photoshop, Quark etc. I found on:
http://www.macworld.com/article/55202/2007/02/termtooltips.html
that you have to go in "Terminal" and paste a script:
defaults write -g NSInitialToolTipDelay -int 10000
It says it stalls tool tips for 10 seconds. I'm not sure if that will work in OS 10.6
And I'm not that savy with scripts to restore default settings and besides I found it effects Spotlight.
Isn't there an easier way to disable tool tips?
Thank you-jNo.

Not Sure on RAM Upgrade Configs
Hello
just bought my wife a G5 2.3GHz Dual
it comes with 513MB DDR2 SDRAM and is expandable to 16GB
i want to upgrade her RAM
machine still in box (for christmas), not sure of the configs / slots for RAM upgrade. does anyone know so i can plan how to go to RAM distributor amd make purchase?
further, she will be using it for graphic design, large files open in photoshop, quark, freehand, suitcase, etc. so im not sure how much RAM to buy.
thanks
wayneI rely on Crucial for quality, good price (there are lower prices out there) and their support.
How much RAM? Photoshop just adores RAM. You can't have "too much" almost. 8GB or look for www.ramjet.com for a low price on 2GB (4GB kit) or OWC ( www.macsales.com ) as well.
From Crucial web page www.crucial.com/mac
DDR2 PC2-4200 • CL=4 • UNBUFFERED • NON-ECC • DDR2-533 • 1.8V • 128Meg x 64
DDR2 PC2-5300 • CL=5 • UNBUFFERED • NON-ECC • DDR2-667 • 1.8V • 128Meg x 64
Sale price in effect makes 2GB kit (2 x 1GB) $197.

Hello -
I know that this question is not Dreamweaver specific, but I
figured the users on this forum may be very knowledgeable.
I'm a student studying Computer Information Systems, but I
want a program that offers a greater focus on web design AND
development. I've been trying to find out what schools are best so
that I can transfer, but I'm not really sure which ones are the
best.
What schools are best? Where did you go? Or if you didn't go
to school for web design/development, what did you do instead?
ThanksHere is the thing, there are great technical schools out
there, but there are also great art schools out there. What side of
website development are you looking to learn? Are you more
interested in pursuing a program where you get the technical
knowledge (ie: WIndows/Linux/Sun/Apple, PHP/ASP, SQL, Java, etc),
or are you looking for more of a designer background creating
designs, advertisements (ie: Illustrator, Photoshop, Quark,
Dreamweaver, Expression/Sharepoint, etc.)?
Personally I would pick the end that you are better with or
that you prefer doing more. Being balanced is hard to do, and could
take time if you need to pursue multiple degrees or a major &
minor. So depending on which you may want to focus on more would
depend on the way you should go about looking for a school. I know
some people who went to great art schools and do design, but when
it comes to coding they hand their pages off and are ok with that.
Also keep in mind that these people also do some print work, but
that tends to come with the territory.
I personally didn't go to school for design or IT but I think
it has a lot to do with you. How far would you be willing to move?
Do you prefer living in a country or city environment? I mean if
you want a recommendation that I would give from people I know, I
would say the Art Institute in Philly. But living in a city really
isn't for everyone and it isn't the most inexpensive place to live
so it really depends on your situation. -
Installing iTunes on OS 9.0.4 ?
Hi there:
I have an older Mac that I use in my art studio that runs OS 9.0.4. I would very much like to be able to see if I can install iTunes so I can use it to load MP3s that I already have and play them from the computer while I'm working in the studio.
I just do not want to do this if it's going to cause ANY problems with my existing system, as I love my Wordperfect, and numerous $$ artwork softwares that run.
I downloaded iTunes 2.0.4 from the Apple site and was going to try and install it on my OS 9.0.4 Mac but I wanted to check here first to see if there would be ANY problem with my doing this or if after I bother, it won't do what I'm hoping (play MP3s).
I have no interest in trying to use it to connect to iTunes Store, download, burn, etc., as I can do that on my newer OS 10 iMac that I'm typing from now.
I only want to be able to play music to hear in the studio.
Any thoughts if this is okay to install on my OS 9.0.4 Mac? or will I run the risk of causing some problems I don't know about?
Many thanks for your input!
DebbyHi Niel - Thanks for that suggestion.
Trying that did work but only for playing 1 MP3 that I have on an inserted USB flash stick. It will not allow me to move the MP3 onto my OS 9 mac - and the QT player will not allow me to play more than 1 MP3 (in other words I can't tell it to play sequential MP3s from the flash drive and would have to get up and down every 3 minutes to click on a new MP3 (LOL)
I should mention that this Mac is not connected to the internet (its in an art studio used for Photoshop, Quark, etc) so even trying to use the QT help feature doesn't work because it wants to find that help on the web.
I even tried inserting an audio CD in the disc drive and playing from that. It took about 5 min. to "find" and start playing, but then stopped after 2 minutes, so that doesn't seem to be the way to go.
I just thought that if older iTunes was available to run as a player on an OS 9.0.4, it would be handiest, since it houses a library and plays its playlists in sequence or repeats without you having to keep hitting a play button over and over.
But it's sounding like I'm just better off having to get a CD player or buying an iPod or something and trying to play my music via some other vehicle than my old Mac. I was just trying to use what I already had without having to buy more things and spend more money.
