Photoshop question...zooming

Can't find the discussion board for Photoshop...figured someone here could help.
How do i set the roller ball on the mouse to zoom in and out of the photo?
thanks.

schmoel:
From the Photoshop help document regarding"To zoom in or out":
(Photoshop) If your mouse has a scroll wheel, you can use it to zoom in or out after selecting the Zoom tool. Choose Edit > Preferences > General (Windows) or Photoshop > Preferences > General (Mac OS) and select the Zoom With Scroll Wheel option [Edit: it's a checkbox] to enable this behavior.
Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.

  • I have an Adobe Indesign to Photoshop question - Smart Objects

I have an Adobe Indesign to Photoshop question - Smart Objects
I am copying and placing InDesign photo silhouettes and placing them into a Photoshop document for an online graphic.
I believe that the color holds up very well. It's when the JPG goes through a CMS ingest that the colors warp. A photo technician is able to correct the color.
I just need to get some insight on my process that (I think) I invented - since I don't see any discussions or videos online that back me up.
Any thoughts - or who could I access that might have an answer for me.
    Thanks!

You haven't invented anything. Your server-side processing (based on something involving ImageMagik with PHP most likely) is simply stripping/ ignoring color profiles and converting the colors. This is very much the same issue as in your other post - your procedures just don't realyl make sense and you're basicalyl screwing yourself by using this methodology.

  • Scanning thousands of pics + photoshop question

I'm looking at 3 huge boxes of carefully packed photos, probably between 2-3 thousand pics. I've had this silly notion I would scan them in over time. Right.  A few years later plus a bit more maturity = sanity. I'm wanting to scan these, but am now being realistic. Thought I'd turn to this forum for general opinions. Hope you'll indulge me as I wasn't really sure where else I could ask this kind of question except in the heart of a forum that deal with photos + photoshop.
I'm learning there are these companies now that I could send in boxes of pictures and they will scan them in for a hefty fee. I've been doing some research. Wanted to see if there were any photoshop users who have gone down a similar path and could offer some opinions.
#1 - what size do you recommend: 300dpi or 600dpi. I'm biased towards higher quality, but I'm not a rich man.
#2 - Anyone have any dealings with companies to offer opinions on who to choose or not so choose? I've been trying to find some kind of online feedback about companies, but haven't been successful so far. Any idea on where to look for feedback on companies?
I'm open to feedback on anything related to this. I'll want to go through the pics once I receive them and clean them up in PS of course. Any ideas on how to store them, arrange them, maybe some common errors to avoid when setting all this up.
I certainly would appreciate any help you folks could offer.
    Thanks,
    Robert

I appreciate all the replies. Good discussion, lots to consider. Time is the hardest element for me if I do home scanning. Maybe I'll just wait a few more years for things to slow down a bit and do it all at home. I have two daughters graduating in the next 2 years, getting them ready for college, my career has really taken off and I'm enjoying my work, stuff like that. Just not sure where I'd get the time until the girls are gone from the house and things quiet down a bit.
Talked with my wife about the details of this, I can see me setting up our computer room (the dining room) and converting it from holding 3 computers to my one computer + tables and such set up for a good long scanning season. That will happen soon.
Based on what all has been said about scanners, not sure I need to purchase another one. I have an Epson 4180 perfection. Scans up to 6 photos at once, does high resolution. Not the fastest in the world, but if I'm going to lock into a long project like this, not sure a little boost in scanning speed is going to help me that much. I notice I slow down once I get a neat picture on my screen. I study it, crop, color adjust, fix scratches, etc. I get lost in the restoration process, so not sure the scanning speed is much of an issue. I'll just have to look at it as a long term project to begin one winter when I'm ready to dedicate tons of time.
Concerning lightroom, if I didn't own Aperture already, I would purchase it. Aperture and lightroom do the same things. My only complaint with Aperture is that is bogs down sometimes in the retouching of raw pics. Other than that, its a solid program. If I were to purchase lightroom, not sure what the advantage would be. Also, I looked into the idea of trying to get my pics out of Aperture. My goodness, they have those originals buried so deep in a database, scattered here and there, that it would be next to impossible to get the originals out. I can use an export feature, but wonder if it really keeps the original quality or it changes it through some compression formula.
I honestly still like the idea of sending my pics off to some company for mass scanning, but realize that comes with inherent risks. Those types of scanning situations are more geared towards 300/600 dpi scans, not the high quality scans we have all agreed upon here. That blows that apart. I suppose those are good for the person who just doesn't want to mess with it all and simply needs an average scan for whatever purpose.
Only other question in my mind...I'm using an old mac right now. I honestly love macs. But I will need to upgrade in the next few years as this one is getting old. I haven't kept up with any type of debates (and am not really interested in the long standing grudges either) about mac vs pc. What I am interested in...I notice that pc's continue to get cheaper. Actually, macs have even come down in price a little (shocking). Is there that much of a gap between macs and pc's these days besides the OS?  I mean, the speed advantage of a mac in the past was clear to me with audio/visual. Is that still the case or would y'all say the gap has narrowed?
Appreciate the feedback all, good thread.

  • PE 7 & photoshop question

Recently upgraded from PE 3 and have a question about photoshop connection.  At this point I don't see a need to access/use the photoshop feature.  I can live with the opening screen but notice that all during the cession my internet connection is down loading something at full connect speed.  Is there a way to prevent/stop the internet/photoshop connection other than my turning off the internet connection?  Have done that and didn't seem to have an adverse impact but I would prefer to not have to disconnect from internet.  At this point I've not done anything other than open the program and look at changes from my prior version.  Is it possible some kind of large file(s) being Dl'd and it will stop after file transfer is complete?

I think you may be talking about Photoshop.com, Adobe's free internet portal for displaying photos and video, backing up files, getting free tutorials and receiving new templates and themes for your programs. (In my books, I detail all of these services and the great reason for logging on to this service -- which should not be dragging on your internet connection unless your program is complete idle.)
If this is the case, just log off and it will no longer exchange data with it. You can log off from within the program by just clicking on the link that says "Hi [Your name]" at the top of the interface.

  • Photoshop CS4 Zoom and Full Screen problems

At certain zoom percentages, my art looks fuzzy.  What could be causing this?  It looks like I need to Threshold the art, but if I tap the Zoom Tool on the page it clears up and looks like it's supposed to.  It usually looks fuzzy after I've zoomed using the Zoom Tool to select an area, not just tapped it on the screen.  Also, after going to Full Screen mode, and after taking a snapshot (using Snapz Pro X) when I hit command F again, resize the snapshot and close it, my windows are out of order.  The document I took a pic of is in the background.  It's still "hight lighted" by which I mean if I hit command W (Close) it closes it, even though it might be behind three other open windows.  It would be like if you have three Safari windows open and when you hit close, it closed the very back window, not the one you were looking at and meant to close.  Any help?  I attached an example of the behind files.  It's just like that after I get out of the zoom.  The one that is actually in "front" is the darker gray bar one that's actually behind two other files.  Says (Layer 14, Alpha 1 copy 2/8)

My video card is NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT.  I tried turning off the OpenGL and that does seem to help.  Is my video card not good enough for the new Photoshop?  Also, any suggestions on why when I go to full screen, take a snapshot (Snapz Pro X), go out of full screen and save the snapshot and close it, the next file that is "in front" is behind two or three other files?  I've hit close several times and accidentally closed the wrong file because I didn't realize it was the front file, since sometimes I can't even see it.  It hasn't been a major problem, since it will ask me to Save if I haven't saved, just an annoyance.  I have to reopen the file and am not longer able to use my history if I want to go back and make changes.  Plus if it is a large file, I have to wait for it to open.  And it makes it a hassle for me because they are all out of order then, there is no rhyme or reason to what will actually be the front file, so I close more than one I don't mean to.  I watch now, but it's a hassle I shouldn't have to deal with.  And since Expose no longer brings all the files of a program to the front, it is even more frustrating, since they can even be behind Finder windows.  It may be a Snow Leopard issue, but I don't know.  Any suggestions appreciated.  Thanks.

  • Editing with Photoshop question

    Hey guys,
I am reposting this under a new subject.
My question is concerning the presets in preferences for an external editor.
I use PS4 and am wondering what is the deference between the tiff and psd selections.
I have played around with both and notice the file size changes when I bring a picture back into aperture. There is also a huge deference between 8bit and 16bit. Also what dpi setting is a good all around setting. I am interested in hearing some different views on how you set this up and why.
Thanks in advance for any advice.
    Blessings!
    John

Is the sRGB IE61966-2.1 setting the one you are referring to as sRGB?
Yes, that is the one I am referring to.
I used to spend alot of time messing around with my images, but now I would rather just keep the good ones that do not require much post-production work. Sending the file in that colorspace allows me to view it as it will appear in the intended final forms I use (as mentioned above; web, print shop, digital files).
I would be converting it to that colorspace at some point anyway, so I just send the file to Photoshop in the final colorspace (I am not a professional, so potentially losing some color is not the issue it might be if I had clients).
I shoot with a Nikon D300 and it has two settings sRGB and AdobeRGB.
I have it set on sRGB.
I shoot a Nikon D80 and use the same default colorspace, but I had previously used the AdobeRGB when I was strictly using Bridge > ACR > Photoshop workflow because ACR defaults to the flatter looking starting point anyway.
AdobeRGB is slightly smaller than ProPhoto RGB, but larger than sRGB colorspace.
I tend to agree with RWBoyer on being able to see the colors and having confidence in time spent on adjustments, so I stay in the sRGB colorspace simply because my monitor displays a larger portion of that colorspace than either AdobeRGB or ProPhotoRGB.
In reality, if your end goal is for print, then the final print is going to be the deciding factor for you (and whether you want to go with the larger colorspace if that looks better to you).
Perhaps others will have some different viewpoints to give you more information.

  • Photoshop CS6 zoom percentage

    Hi there,
Does anyone know if there is a way to set a default zoom percentage value in Photoshop CS6?
I would like to set this to 31.5%.
A bit of a strange value I know, but I've found that this value gives me an image on the screen that is the same size as what I get out of the printer.
It would be great if I could do this, as it's a bit of a bind having to type in 31.5 over and over again in the Navigator.
Apologies if this is covered elsewhere.  If it is I haven't been able to find it.
    Richard.

Seem you need a simpler editor then Photoshop or need to learn a bit about the software you have.
For this is not overly complicated when it comes to Photoshop.
If you want to automate something using Photoshop you need an Action, Script or both.
If you want something to be automatically automated when you open a document you need that event to trigger the automation you want to happen.
If you want your image to be displayed print size on your screen what needs to be known is the print size, the displays resolution and the images pixel size.   Knowing these sizes one can figure out the number of pixels that the imaged need to be displayed with on the display and knowing images pixel size it can be scaled for the display resolution. All image on you system most likely will not be set to 300dpi resolution. Images need to be scaled according to their resolution.
Photoshop make it very easy to record Action.  The action Palette palette is a full blown action editor.
Photoshop menu File>Scripts>Script Event Manager make it easy to trigger automation for given events.
Photoshop knows image pixel size, print resolution therefor can calculate print size.  However  Apple's and Microsoft's operating systems do not know or store your displays resolution and you display hardware does not report pixel resolution to you computer. That piece of the equation is missing you need to set that for Photoshop then and only then can Photoshop calculate the correct View Print Size and scale the image accordingly.

  • Lightroom/Photoshop question colours correction question

Question for Lightroom and Photoshop users:
I'm using Lightroom all the time now for importing and checking my RAW images. (OSX)
One thing i'm still struggling with though is levels. I want to simply correct levels in LR like PS -
I imported today an image into LR (RAW), corrected it as i thought necessary, exported to Photoshop for final checking and checked the channel histograms in 'levels' and ALL 3 needed correcting.
So, i've clearly not mastered how to do it in LR, i wondered if anyone had a second to advise how you check and correct the 3 channels in Light Room, as you would using the Levels command in Photoshop.
< To adjust the shadows and highlights manually, drag the black and white Input Levels sliders to the edge of the first group of pixels on either end of the histogram.> - Photoshop help.
I can't get an answer on the LR forum, so thought i'd try here, can anyone advise?
    Hope to hear from you

  • Loaded Mavericks and have lost 'cmd spacebar' shortcut in Photoshop for zoom, can I get it back?

  • Photoshop CS6 zoom to center broken

Zoom tool does not center image about clicked point, even when "zoom clicked point to center" is checked under general preferences. Behavior appears the same with this box checked and unchecked. Is there another way to force this feature?
Already installed all updates, and have restarted program and OS multiple times as well.
This is a basic feature that IMO makes the program useless without it.

    Setup:
    Fresh install of Photoshop CS6 extended 64-bit (13.0.1) on a Win7 64-bit OS.
    To reproduce problem:
Use "standard screen mode". Open image in new tab. Check "zoom clicked point to center" under general preferences. Select zoom tool. Click on image. Clicked point does not become center of view. This happens with any zoom level, as long as the image fills the viewport. Unchecking the same setting does not change the behavior.
    Why this is a bug:
Correct behavior is shown if an image is switched from a tab to a full window (by dragging the tab down into the viewport so min/max/close buttons appear on the window frame). In this case the "zoom clicked point to center" setting works as expected, centering when checked, and not when not.
The only time correct behavior is shown in tab view is when zooming from a magnification which does not fill the viewport to a magnification which does fill the viewport. In that case, and no other, the image will be centered on the clicked point.
Both of these statements suggest that "zoom clicked point to center" is not implemented correctly when in tabbed view, which is the default view and the one most people (myself included) are trying to use.
    Notes:
Photoshop CS3 on the same machine shows correct "zoom clicked point to center" behavior by default (there is no option to turn this zoom style off).

  • Photoshop CC - Zooming with "ALT"

1-2 Weeks earlier, my Photoshop work'd with no problems, but now, when i want to zoom in with ALT + Mouse Wheel but Photoshop always switch's when im pushing "ALT" to the menu. I got the standard-configuration. Does someone know, how to fix it? I need this zoom realy.

I wonder if something is off with the zoom tool? You can try resetting it.
Just select the zoom tool, right click and choose Reset Tool to see if it goes to its' normal behavior.
Another possibility is "focus"  If I click outside the image, alt selects the menu. If I click inside the image, alt modifies the zoom tool.

  • New Photoshop Questions

Right now, I have Photoshop Elements 4 and I am thinking about upgrading, but while trying the trials of the newer photoshop, I had some questions.
Can you unfloat the floating menus? I do not like the floating Windows and would like to know if there is a way to embed them like in Elements 4 where you can either minimize them or expand them when they are needed.
Also, is there a simpler way to switch between open projects? Elements 4 has a handy box at the bottom where you can just click on the thumbnail of the other project and switch to it, so far, I can only figure out how to do that through the Window menu.
    Thanks

depends on the floating windows, you can dock floating panels but you can't dock the filter dialog boxes. To dock a panel just drag it by it's title next to another panel until you see a blue bar.

I use InDesign CS6, I was told that if i hold the ALT key down and double click on a picture it will be opened in Photoshop. When I do it, it opens in Windows Photo Viewer. How do i get it to open in Ps?

Your file associations for that type of image set in the operating system are set to open in Windows Photo Viewer.
I can't tell you how to change them in Windows, but someone else will.
In the meantime, choose Open With from the Links panel menu and select Adobe Photoshop when the image is selected.
