Photoshop *.RAW format

Can someone tell me the difference between Photoshop's PSD format and Photoshop's RAW format. This format is located in the formats dropdown as an option when saving.
1. Does the RAW format have a larger gamut than the PSD format?
2. If I export to a Photoshop RAW format, will XMP side cars again be made to keep my changes?
I frequently export DNG photos that have been processed in Lightroom to Photoshop for additional processing such as HDR or retouching that is not possible in Lightroom. I then save my work as a PSD. Sometimes I would like to make a few additional lightroom edits but the PSD no longer has the gamut that the DNG had.
Can someone tell me the reason for the Photoshop RAW format?

Guru Chris Cox is not just any "staff", he is a top Adobe Photoshop engineer who has been writing Photoshop's code since the last millennium.

What is .raw format?

I thought saving in this format might be the best way to save a scanned 16bit image for opening in Camera raw, but Bridge doesn't even seem to recognize the format! How can Bridge not recognize a Photoshop format, and what is .raw for??

"File extension RAW description:
The Photoshop Raw format is a flexible file format for transferring images between applications and computer platforms. This format supports CMYK, RGB, and grayscale images with alpha channels, and multichannel and Lab images without alpha channels. Documents saved in the Photoshop Raw format can be of any pixel or file size, but they cannot contain layers.
The Photoshop Raw format consists of a stream of bytes describing the color information in the image. Each pixel is described in binary format, with 0 representing black and 255 white (for images with 16‑bit channels, the white value is 65535). Photoshop designates the number of channels needed to describe the image, plus any additional channels in the image. You can specify the file extension (Windows), file type (Mac OS), file creator (Mac OS), and header information.
In Mac OS, the file type is generally a four-character ID that identifies the file—for example, TEXT identifies the file as an ASCII text file. The file creator is also generally a four-character ID. Most Mac OS applications have a unique file creator ID that is registered with the Apple Computer Developer Services group.
The Header parameter specifies how many bytes of information appear in the file before actual image information begins. This value determines the number of zeroes inserted at the beginning of the file as placeholders. By default, there is no header (header size = 0). You can enter a header when you open the file in Raw format. You can also save the file without a header and then use a file-editing program, such as HEdit (Windows) or Norton Utilities® (Mac OS), to replace the zeroes with header information.
You can save the image in an interleaved or noninterleaved format. If you choose interleaved, the color values (red, green, and blue, for example) are stored sequentially. Your choice depends on requirements of the application that will open the file."

Can't open raw format files in photoshop elements 3.0

I'm sure this question has been posed here 1,000 times already, and I've just spent over an hour surfing the web, using adobe on-line support, etc. -- too much to sift through, and none of it giving me a simple answer.
So here's the question:
- Using Windows XP
- I have a Nikon D40
- Photoshop Elements 3.0
- 2.3 Camera Raw Plug In
From what I am able to gather, I SHOULD be able to open raw format files using PE 3.0, but I get the various error messages:
"Could not complete your request because it is not the right kind of document".
"Could not complete your request because the file-format module cannot parse the file".
Am I missing some sort of simple step before I start downloading plug-ins I don't need and messing up all the settings on my computer? Any help would be appreciated, and once again, apologies if I'm repeating a question that's been asked a million times before.

Support for the Nikon D40 was added in Camera Raw version 3.7. So you would need Photoshop Elements 4.0 or later to be able to use that.
To use your version you may need to download the free DNG converter from http://www.adobe.com/products/dng/ and convert your D40 files from NEF to DNG.

This camera is only supported in ACR 7.1 and above, meaning CS6.

download the images from the camera they seem to only be in jpeg (I don't
see any rw2 or raw files to download). If I select the jpeg file it seems
to only download a jpeg file. I do understand that I do have the option to
open the jpeg in RAW. In doing this, is all the extra information included
in the RAW file there or is it lost coming from the camera

I want the highest quality pictures possible, so I take photos in RAW format, but what format should I be saving in during photoshop editing? Is TIFF or PSD or EPS, or some other format the best for retaining the highest quality photos?

To me saving as PSD seems more natural. Since it's Photoshop's native format, you can rest assured that all aspects of your document will be saved.

Photoshop CC locking up saying "Reading Camera Raw Format" when opening file from Lightroom

When I open a file from Lightroom, CC opens and asks about sending data to Adobe, and no matter what answer you give the program locks up at the "Reading Camera Raw Format" prompt.

What files from which camera do you use? Where are they stored? What system? Are Lightroom and Photoshop properly updated and use the same RAW settings? Provide more info.

are you sure its not just the way you are viewing the photo? you don't even see noise on the preview in Bridge and when I say preview I mean when zooming into the preview window. My thought process being in PS you are zoomed in more

Cannot open RAW format pictures from Nikon D3300 on Photoshop CS5.1 Extended

I recently purchased a Nikon D3300. I have Photoshop CS5.1 Extended for my PC. I am unable to open pictures taken in RAW format. I downloaded and installed the DNG Converter version 8.6 off the Adobe website. This did not remedy the situation.
Anyone have any suggestions?

DNG Converter is an application. You need to open DNG Converter and tell it to select the FOLDER that contains your NEF files and then click convert
Don't try to select individual files, select the folder instead.

Olympus Micro 4/3 RAW Format not recognized in Photoshop

What do I need to install in Photoshop to recognized Olympus Micro 4/3 RAW Format?

It turns out that all I needed to do was download the latest version of the RAW update 6.6 for Photoshop 5.5 which includes the latest RAW formats for a number of newer released camera models from many camera companies. My camera model was listed in the Photoshop 6.3 RAW updates - Olympus Micro 4/3 P3 camera model. I downloaded and installed the latest digital camera RAW format update and installed it on my computer for Photoshop 5.5 and it worked perfectly allowing me to open the Olympus Micro 4/3 P3 camera model RAW format pictures, view and correct the photos in Photoshop.
I actually found the answer in Photoshop HELP, it just took me a while till I phrased my HELP Search properly for Photoshop.

How can I open multiple files as Photoshop Raw files at the same time for Photoshop CS6 extended on a PC?

I am trying to open 20-25 files at the same time as Photoshop Raw [*.RAW] files.
The only way I can open multiple files is if i leave the file type as All Formats. When I change it to Photoshop Raw [*.RAW], the files a deselected.

Use bridge. Select all the files then press ctrl-r or cmd-r to load the selected files into camera raw.
If you try this in Photoshop use File>Open As then for file type choose camera raw. (I have not tested open as for opening multiple files)

A problem occurs when saving in the Raw format.

I just started photographing using the Raw format. When I edit a picture and then save it in Photoshop CS5, the file appears blacked out but when I click on the file, the picture comes up perfectly in CS5. Does anyone know why this happens and how do I correct it? This effect does not happen when I save a picture in the jpeg format.

I think it depends on how you read the OP's post. It could also mean that he started using RAW from the camera, when he saves the file using the default format (psd) that there is no thumbnail in explorer. But when saved as a jpg there is.
I deduced that from the statement:
"the file appears blacked out but when I click on the file, the picture comes up perfectly in CS5."

Why are my RAW format files no longer supported?

Using a Mac OS X 10.5.8 with versions of Adobe Photoshop CS5, Adobe Bridge CS5 and Camera Raw Plug-in.
Shot .CR2 raw format photos on my Canon EOS 450D (Same as Rebel XSi)
Have always been able to open them successfully in Camera Raw and Photoshop. Now says that the files and/or my camera model/make is not supported by the Camera Raw Plug-in nor by my Photoshop.
Tried converting to DNG first with Adobe DNG Converter 7.1 and even that says that the source folder does not contain any supported camera raw files.
Previous raw files taken with the same camera on the same computer with the same (or even earlier) versions of all these programs have always worked. I can still open those successfully too. However just these new ones I cannot. Nothing has changed about my camera in that time...
What can I do and why is it that these files are no longer supported?

ACR 6.7 and ACR 7.1 RC can open XSi CR2 files at least on Windows 7. I just checked.
However, on Windows, at least, the DNGC 7.1 RC has a quirk in that when you want to convert a folder of CR2s to DNGs, you have to click the Select button when the folder is highlighted in the file selection dialog and the folder listed in the location area of the file selection dialog. You cannot click INTO the folder and then click Select, which sounds like what you are doing. If you do click into the folder and click Select it’ll say there are no compatible files that exist. I think previous versions of the DNGC would recover properly if you clicked into the folder before clicking Select.
Since your files cannot be opened in ACR, either, then perhaps they are corrupted. You might post a download link to one of them in a message here so others can have a look. If you don’t have a large file hosting service, then set up a free account on www.dropbox.com or www.yousendit.com or similar, upload your file, there, then post the public download link, here, in a reply.
