Photoshop's brightness and exposure controls?

Can anyone explain the difference(s) between Photoshop's brightness control and its exposure control?

Exposure command
Adjusts tonality by performing calculations in a linear color space. Exposure is primarily for use in HDR images. See Adjust Exposure for HDR image.

The Exposure adjustment is designed for making tonal adjustments to HDR images, but it works with 8‑bit and 16‑bit images. Exposure works by performing calculations in a linear color space (gamma 1.0) rather than the current color space.
1. Do one of the following:
Click the Exposure icon or an Exposure preset in the Adjustments panel.
Choose Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Exposure.
Note: You can also choose Image > Adjustments > Exposure. But keep in mind that this method makes direct adjustments to the image layer and discards image information. Adjustment layers for 32-bit images are available in Photoshop Extended only.
2. In the Adjustments panel, set any of the following options:
Exposure
Adjusts the highlight end of the tonal scale with minimal effect in the extreme shadows.
Offset
Darkens the shadows and midtones with minimal effect on the highlights.
Gamma
Adjusts the image gamma, using a simple power function. Negative values are mirrored around zero (that is, they remain negative but still get adjusted as if they are positive).
The eyedroppers adjust the luminance values of images (unlike the Levels eyedroppers that affect all color channels).
The Set Black Point eyedropper sets the Offset, shifting the pixel you click to zero.
The Set White Point eyedropper sets the Exposure, shifting the point you click to white (1.0 for HDR images).
The Midtone eyedropper sets the Exposure, making the value you click middle gray.

The Brightness/Contrast adjustment lets you make simple adjustments to the tonal range of an image. Moving the brightness slider to the right increases tonal values and expands image highlights, to the left decreases values and expands shadows. The contrast slider expands or shrinks the overall range of tonal values in the image.
In normal mode, Brightness/Contrast applies proportionate (nonlinear) adjustments to image layer, as with Levels and Curves adjustments. When Use Legacy is selected, Brightness/Contrast simply shifts all pixel values higher or lower when adjusting brightness. Since this can cause clipping or loss of image detail in highlight or shadow areas, using Brightness/Contrast in Legacy mode is not recommended for photographic images (but can be useful for editing masks or scientific imagery).
Note: Use Legacy is automatically selected when editing Brightness/Contrast adjustment layers created with previous versions of Photoshop.

Have you installed Boot Camp drivers? You need them to make your computer work properly on Windows, and to use your function keys as Play or Pause, volume and brightness keys.
To install them, follow these steps:
1. Press the X key while your Mac is starting to start into OS X.
2. Open Boot Camp Assistant and tick only the option to download Windows support software.
3. Windows support software will be downloaded and Boot Camp Assistant will ask you to burn it into a DVD or USB drive, so do it.
4. Start into Windows, insert the DVD or USB drive and install Boot Camp drivers. Your Mac and your volume and brightness keys will be working after installing the drivers

Where are the Brightness and Levels controls?

It's so simple, but it's late at night (early hours of the morning actually) and I'm stuck!
The most basic of controls . . . . Brightness, Contrast, Levels etc. I just cannot find.
Where are they?
Anyway, I'm off to bed.

Looking back to the old FCP, the Brightness filter was pretty appalling as it really upset the contrast etc. and it required complex fiddling with the other controls to get a semblance of balance back.
Then a year or so ago someone made a new free Brightness plugin that not only adjusted the brightness but automatically compensated the contrast controls so everything looked great.
I can't remember the name of the creator or the plugin.
It might be Luca and this, but I can't be sure.

It's a pity that FCP X hasn't got a similar effect.
The following adjustment gave the images a nice lift and kept everything pleasant to view.
Highs +10%, Mids +5% and Shadows +3%

Brightness and Volume control indicator not appear

dear all,
I have recently reinstalled my Win 7 Pro, also installed all drivers but when i am adjusting my volume or brightness with hotkeys (for volume push bottons and for brightness Fn delete home), i am not able to see grreen indicator bars,
Please give me solution,

Have you also installed Hotkey Features Integration? If not, it can be found here. This is the program that displays those indicators that are now missing from your system. If you have already installed it, which version are you using?

Exposure control vs. Brightness control

Could someone explain the difference between the exposure control (slider) and the brightness control. They both seem to move the histogram in similar manners.
And if there is a difference should one always correct for WB first, then exposure, then brightness?
Or Exposure first then WB?

Exposure adjusts the full tonal range while the brightness control adjusts the mid tones without clipping the highlights and shadows.
It is good practice to get the exposure/brightness correct before making color corrections including wb.

Control of brightness and contrast of HP Pavilion G4-1310au

Hello. I just got a new HP Pavilion G4-1310au. My problem is that it did not have any OS installed and so no system drivers were installed either. In the box I only got a CD that has HP manual in it and nothing else and the notebook of course, the power cord, bag, and some printed manual. I was expecting to see a System Disk CD so I could install the system drivers, but I didn't find one.
So I installed the OS and then installed the network driver which I downloaded from another computer and also the audio. My problem is that I cannot find a laucher that would help me control the brightness and contrast of the screen. I tried FN key plus F3 or F2 keys but it didn't work.
Anybody can help me how I can control the brightness and contrrast or better yet if there is a Launcher software where I can control all the features of this notebook? By the way, I don't know how to enable the bluetooth either.
Any help is much appreciated.

Please don't tell me to adjust anything on the preferences, since I have tried all. I think it may be anoter kind of problem, maybe hardware related or anything.
I ran the Hardware repair DVD and everything was ok, but when the imac restarted the screen was very lit again, but when it went sleep, when it went awake again the screen got dimmed again. Because of that I think that the problem could be software related, but who knows. Excuse my english.

I can't see another possible answer - the longer your machine is up, the more the power supply is stressed, it protects itself by dimming the screen to lower the draw on it.

Controlling brightness and contrast in DVD Player

Is it possible to control the brightness and contrast in DVD player?

It depends on your graphics controller. Select "Show Supported Features" in DVD Player's "Help" menu. If it shows "Video Color" supported, you can choose "Video Color" from the "Windows" menu. Don't forget to click the "On" box at the top-left.

Why Levels mid-point slider and Exposure Gamma Correction slider not the same?

Both the mid-point slider in Levels and the Gamma Correction slider in Exposure adjustment appear to modify Gamma. They even use the same numeric scale.
When Gamma <= 1, both sliders appear to produce the same results (confirmed with a couple of random sample settings and using the Difference blend mode).
When Gamma > 1, however, the results are very different. Levels produces more what one would expect in terms of moving the Gamma curve without moving the white and black points but the Exposure Gamma Correction slider seems to do something very different, either moving the black point or applying a very different curve the produces much brighter tones in the dark shadows.
Can anyone explain why and how these two adjustments produce different results?
Is this a bug with the Exposure adjustment?
By the way, in my limited tests of this I was just using a standard RGB file in 16-bit mode - nothing fancy like 32-bit or LAB or anything like that. Also, Photoshop CS6 Extended. Both 32- and 64-bit versions show the same behavior.

The differing gamma adjustment results also occur in the OS X version of Ps 13.0.1
The situation is worse than you realize, Dennis. Test with a linear grayscale gradient in 16-bit or 8-bit RGB mode instead of arbitrary images. Remember to view at 100% zoom for an accurate display.
Gamma adjustments of less than 1 performed by Levels adjustment layer and Exposure adjustment layer do differ but to a less obvious extent than when the adjustment is greater than 1. Differences can be seen in histograms, and low level differences when differencing layers can be made more obvious by adding an Exposure adjustment layer with the exposure increased.
You'll get further different results by using the gamma adjustment in the "Exposure and Gamma" method of Image > Adjustment > HDR Toning. Notice that the gamma value there has to be specified as the inverse of that in Levels and Exposure.
I haven't bothered to calculate which, if any, of the three gamma adjustment controls gives correct results because that is Adobe's responsibility.
It's quite ridiculous that a common routine giving consistent and correct results isn't being used for all these gamma adjustments. Code re-use makes software more robust, simpler to test, simpler to correct, leaner and overall easier to manage. But what do I know.

Windows 7 Brightness and Function key not Working Properly

i have HP 15-af024AU APU Quad Core A8-7410 - (4 GB DDR3,1 TB HDD) Noteboook and it came with windows 8.1 preinstalled than i installed windows 7 ultimate.
i have problem in Display Brightness i am not able to change Brightness by function key or by manually from windows settings.
2. my Function key are not working properly . all key are fliped whiout holding function key it work as function key. 3. bluetooth is not working when i search for new device not able to find any available discouable bluetooth device. 4. wireless button software is not wokring in windows 7 i already updated my bios that available in drivers support and install alll drivers too properly so please give proper drivers for windows 7 for this product that works perfect.

Exposure control errors when recording videos with...

I noticed that when I record videos, the exposure sometimes is not adjusted properly. If lighting conditions change, exposure remains at the same level, and records became over or underexposed. This is especially noticeable outdoors.
I have a few minutes long sample recording where the recording starts normally, then as light conditions change, (I slowly move from a shady area to a lit area) exposure gradually degrades to a point where most of the recording "burns out" due to extreme overexposure ( about 80% of the picture is white).
What confuses me is when I tried to reproduce this problem (albeit it different lighting conditions), exposure control worked pretty good.
I wonder if these exposure problems are due to a bug, hardware problem or a device limitation.
Do you have any tips to get better recordings with the phone?

The phone runs the latest firmware (3.36) available currently. There are no image-related changes mentioned in the 3.36 changelog though.

Did you turn off the "show transform controls" option in the move tool?
It sounds like you were using that previously.
And you can always transform by using the Free Transform command (command/control T).

Regional exposure control

Hi - I have several photos where, with Exposure at the default, the image is good except for
some way too bright highlights. If I reduce the Exposure control to the minimum, these highlights
are good, but of course the rest of the image is very dark. Using Highlights/Shadows/Recovery
does not give good results. Dodge doesn't work for this either.
Is there some way to use different Exposure settings in various parts of the image? I think
Brushes would do this, but there is no option to use Brushes for controls in the Exposure
brick. Any ideas?

Thanks for the reply William. Yes, one would expect that Dodge should do this
for me. These are images made in a church with clear glass French type windows.
At "normal" exposure, the crossbar window dividers completely disappear, as does
any detail around the window casing.
Reducing the Exposure control to a min. will give enough detail to make these
acceptable (tho not great). Using Dodge/Burn will not do as good a job. Neither
will Highlights or Recovery. They help a bit, but not as good as the Exposure
control. Doesn't make sense, does it. I haven't tried Curves, but it looks like you
can brush that, so I'll play with it.

Lightroom Exposure Control

Can I use LRs exposure control slider for the same function as it is used in my camera? I'd like to get additional shots but only have a -3, 0 and a +3 on the camera. I'm doing some photos in High Definition Imaging and want to increase the number if shots I put together with the HDL software...

There's a long story here, but the bottom line is -3 to +3 is plenty, and doing what you are proposing won't work nearly as well as doing it in-camera.

Next generation exposure control

In another thread I made a comment how the controls and interfaces on today's DSLRs are still firmly rooted in the analog age. On this occasion I wanted to start a discussion about how exposure controls should ideally work on a modern computerised DSLR.
Let's summarize the current state, we have P/Av/Tv/M to choose from, one or two wheels that control time or aperture depending on the mode we are in, then there's ISO which can be set manually by using the menu or extra buttons or, with restrictions, automatically, and exposure compensation, which also doesn't always work (e.g. doesn't affect auto ISO in M).
Obviously ISO, the third parameter besides time and aperture that controls the exposure, is still a second-rate citizen, otherwise we would have 8 insteaed of 4 major shooting modes, ISO auto/manual * time auto/manual * aperture auto/manual.
So how about three switches or buttons to toggle each individually from auto to manual?
Or how about three wheels, that each control one of these three parameters and toggle auto/manual with a click?
That way in full manual I have full control over all three; if all three are in manual, there's no exposure compensation; as soon as I switch one of the three to automatic, it becomes free to control exposure compensation!
And if two are in automatic and one in manual then one of the wheels whose parameter is on auto can be used for exposure compensation, and the other to control the bias of the automatic because in this scenario the automatic has two values under its control, so there are many combinations that are valid, and I'd like to tell the automatic whether to prefer large apertures or higher ISOs, for example.
