Photoshop saves jpg much sharper than is displaying it
Hi,
I finished my work on an image but when I save it and view it in windows photo viewer the image is much much sharper than inside photoshop( at 100%) .Anyone knows what is causing this?
(using CS6 on windows 7)
Thanks
1.Flattened all layers(in my original psd file) -------saved it as jpeg and the result is sharper than I see it in photoshop.
Are you comparing at 100% view (actual pixels)?
When you are saving as JGP are you reducing pixel dimension? (like you can do in the Save For Web dialog)?
again, can you post a screen shot of the doc in PS and Photoviewer at 100% so we can see what you are describing. In the Photoshop screen grab make sure you include whole document window so we can see view percentage.
When you view at 100% in Photoshop, every pixel in your image is being represented by a monitor pixel. It is the only way to accurately preview a PS image. If a free Microsoft image viewer happens to add sharpness, that is not a problem Photoshop can control.
Also, if you are saving a PSD document as a JPG, that will introduce artifacts, which can affect the appearance of an image.
You will get much more informed feedback if we can actually see what you are describing.

Help with Photoshop CS2 files MUCH larger than normal, possibly not compessing layer masks
Has anyone else come across a problem where Photoshop files grow in size much faster than expected, especially when adding layer masks?
Normally when you add a layer mask the file size grow a small amount if the layer mask is mostly all white or mostly all black. In this case it's like the file size is growing exponentially, almost as if the layer mask isn't being compressed at all.
The file in question although large, is similar dimensions, resolution, and number of layers as other projects that have been worked on and all the usual thing have been checked like resolution, colour mode, bit depth and the image has also been cropped so there's nothing outside of the page.
The file has been checked on 2 different macs and exhibits the same behaviour and Photoshop preferences have been deleted and re-created and we've tried copying the file by dragging layers to a new document of the same dimensions with no success.
The only things we're certain of is that file size grows dramatically when adding layer masks in particular and layers in general.
The file was created by someone else, if that might be a factor, though the file has been "saved as.." with no improvement.
Any ideas?
TIA
Tom
The onlyMaybe it has something to do with "Maximize Compatibility". If that's checked when you save, it might add a lot of weight to your file, even with just a simple layer mask. Don't know, haven't done any testing, just a thought.
Edit: Just did a quick test:
1. flat image saved as PSD = 5.2 MB
2. same image converted to a layer with simple layer mask, saved as PSD = 5.8 MB
3. same layer mask image saved WITH "maximize compatibility" = 10.7 MB
So adding "maximize compatibility" nearly doubled this test file. Could be it? -
CR2 files much sharper than processed jpegs
Hi there - I am using CS6. Can anyone tell me what I might be doing wrong, or if I need to tweak some settings but my jpegs seem quite unsharp in comparison to the CR2 file after processing. The psd file is also not as sharp. Im just using windows photo viewer, but have also viewed the 3 different files in other viewers and I can still see the issue. I have taken into consideration the noise reduction settings etc and always save the jpeg at the highest setting. Should there be such a difference ?

Hi there - yep I wasnt trying to embed through email, but you cannot embed a psd file, so got a little confused. I will post the jpegs below and copy link the the RAW & PSD files as well.
I guess when Im viewing quickly I just use the windows viewer and that might be my problem, but I have noticed that even in Photoshop Im not happy with the psd & jpeg file.
Thanks for all of your help. Here are some of the files in jpeg & the link to my dropbox below with the RAW & PSD files !

Master sharper than Version?
In AP 2 I notice that if I view a Master in the Viewer that it appears much sharper than the untouched default Version. (I'm not using Quick preview BTW).
Just wonder why that should be, I would have thought that the default Version would be rendered the same as Master?
Edit:
(I'm talking about viewing the full image, not at 100% zoom).
Message was edited by: D AndersonNo idea. If the master is a RAW, it has to be interpreted via algorithms before rendering and then displayed. A TIFF/JPG etc master still has to be extracted from its file and (in the case of JPG decompressed) before rendering.
Yet a version is (or should be) exactly the same as NO IMAGE DATA exists within a file, merely a collection of rules to apply to the master. So with no RAW or other adjustments made, both images should be identical. Certainly I have never witnessed anything different.
Are you comparing side-by-side and seated square on to reduce effect of LCD panel? Have you tried creating a copy version from master using the menu pick? -
Photoshop saves JPEG images much too dark--any ideas?
Hi there, I'm having an issue with my Photoshop applications and I was hoping someone could give me a little insight/help in fixing the problem.
When working with a file in Photoshop (I am an artist, so I usually create my files from scratch rather than loading them from a camera), I can get the colors to appear as they should in the workspace. When I finish artwork, I make sure the colors are exactly as I want them, then save it as a JPEG file. However, if I open this JPEG file in any application--browsers, photo viewing programs--it is extremely dark and saturated. If I open the JPEG in Photoshop, though, it looks fine. This issue seems to have occurred spontaneously 3-4 months ago. I don't recall changing or deleting any of my monitor or video card preferences, or my color profiles. I was working with Photoshop Elements 4.0 at the time, and it suddenly started happening.
Now, I have found a sort of work-around for it. If I screencap my workspace with the artwork open in it, then I can open up that screencap in Photoshop. The colors are much TOO bright and washed out when I do this, but if I crop the image so it's just the artwork and save it, then it displays in browsers and viewing programs more or less as it should, i.e. how I see it in Photoshop. However, if I open that JPEG in Photoshop, it will display much brighter than the original artwork.
It's not a desperate issue since I have this weird work-around, but I'm currently trying to save images for printing--which means they need to be very large, and I'm not keen on zooming to 100% and screen-capping the art piece by piece, then stitching it all together before saving it. I'd really like to get this issue resolved. I thought it might have to do with the fact that I was using outdated software (PSE 4.0), but I've just recently upgraded to CS5 Extended and the same issue prevails.
If it's any help, I'm working on an HP EliteBook 8740w, with Windows 7 and an NVIDIA Quadro video card.
Here are the things I've tried, which haven't worked:
Deleting Photoshop preferences/settings (in both PSE 4.0 and CS5)
Uninstalling and re-installing both programs
Re-calibrating my monitor
Changing color settings in Photoshop (files still end up dark regardless)
Disabling OpenGL Drawing
Switching between file types when saving
I am at my wit's end! I am mostly concerned that my clients and professors aren't going to see my work as it is intended to look, when they view it online. The erratic behavior of too-dark or too-light, and my pictures seemingly never displaying correctly on any browser or in any program, has me a little paranoid about my online portfolio, haha. I'm applying for an art scholarship in a month, and if none of my work will save correctly (much less print correctly!) then it will be a sad day indeed!
As I said before, this problem seems to have popped up out of nowhere. My artwork from before the whole saving-too-dark issue began still displays perfectly in most programs, but the rest is totally hit-and-miss. If any of you have fixes or suggestions (even suggestions on adjusting Photoshop so that my images display more consistently in browsers and other programs) I would be extremely grateful.
Thanks so much for your time,
-JennaThough you have solved your problem, be aware, that different applications have different ways to interpret color profiles that can be set in different ways.
Example:
In Firefox, you can either set a color profile or not -- AFAIK, it only works with v2 ICC profiles (vs. v4, v3 seems to have not been released).
From that point, you can set perceptual, absolute, colormetric, or one other...(forget)... but usually you just set that to perceptual for monitor work as I understand it. Then a 3rd FF setting (all in its registry, of course, though occasionally there are extensions that let you manage the three settings. They correspond to values (accessible through 'about:config' in FF's address window), all under the prefix:
"gfx.color_management."
"display_profile" - text string of file containing a v2 ICC profile, usually in "C:\Windows\System32\Spool\drivers\color\" (at least on Win7) -- extention ".icm"
"mode" -- when to turn it on (2=for pics that have profiles set, another is for always (1?)), maybe 0=off?
"rendering_intent" - this corresponds to perceptual, abs, colormetric, types, I think 0=perceptual (default)
for FF, if you google one of those values, you'll find more info on some mozillian-type site... "prefix<keyname>" (e.g. - gfx.color_management.display_profile ).
Other progs may have their own or if we are lucky would use the system profile & color management system (assuming it is any good).
Getting an accurate monitor profile and keeping it updated as your monitor 'decays' (i.e. color is usually best when new, then they decay, w/useful life at max gamut ~ 18 months (in my experience), after that, you can still retune to the same white point, but with a loss of gamut due to the phosphors decaying at different rates).
It's best to use some sort of external calibration HW... -- as an external device looking at your monitor through it's various colors is the only way to get a 'digitally objective' measurement. That said, I always have concerns about the stability of the measuring device over time. Does it have components that that could cause non-linear measurement? Am guessing not as likely, as it isn't emitting anything so less wear & tear, but I wouldn't assume it's 100% accurate over time either (but certainly is better than one's own eye which can gradually adjust to just about anything). I had a viewsonic when I first got my current color device (a Spyder3), and it had gone from an original white point of 6500K down to 5700K -- and I had not noticed the difference (over 18-20 months)...
I could bring it back in range, but had lost gamut, and was a bit below the sRGB (consumer grade) standard (which is some fractional
value of the Adobe Photoshop or NTSC standards, which are similar in the size of their ranges, but slightly offset from each other).
The result of all this -- I never really know how my images will look on other monitors, but I try to tag them w/my current monitor profile, hoping that if they care about color, they'll have some SW on their end that can make sense of it...but given my own experience in how SW on the same system handles color differently, I wouldn't say they were 'high hopes'... ;-) -

Photoshop "Save As" problem. Extensions .jpg not automatically added.
Can someone please give me a tip?
My Old computer broke down and I bought a new one.
In the past when I selected "Save As" and then selected the file type ("Format" pull down menu) JPG I only had to type in the name and Photoshop added automatically ".jpg"
On the new computer it doesnt work any more.
Now I select "Save As"....file Type JPG....I give it a name and ....Photoshop saves it without extension
so later It cant be seen when I want to open the file.
What happened?
My System is Windows 7 Home Premium as my old system.Yes, Windows is adjusted to display the extension.
Zeno, I dont add anything t the file name.
Last time with Photoshop on my acer computer i typed in the file name and Photoshop aded automatically .[dot]jpg
Photoshop on my new dell computer doesnt do that. -
Is Photoshop CS6 can't save a file more than 2gegabites?
Is Photoshop CS6 can't save a file more than 2gegabites?
It depends on the file format, many formats are limited to 2 or 4 Gigabytes.
PSB (Large Document Format) is not so limited. -
when I save a photo as a jpeg in PE 13 the file size is much smaller than with PE 12. Why?
Are the image all the same size the % files open into a document seems to vary with the number of pixels the image being opened has. Check the Image size.

Images seem to print much darker than they appear on screen?
I have been using iPhoto to create cards and then I later save them as .pdf files so I can take them to another mac connected to an Epson 1400 printer and print them. Prior to making the cards in iPhoto, I do basic levels and auto color adjustments in Photoshop. Some of the cards that I am printing seem to be so much darker than the way they appear on screen. I understand that there is a differene between what is presented on a display and the way something may print, but the difference is so drastic. Is this something to do with iPhoto?
Thanks.rick.pearl
Because every maker of computer, software and printer have a different definition of the various colors Apple and others got together to agree definitions that would work together. So if you assign a color space to an image - sRGB, say - then any software or hardware that respect the color space will be using the same meaning for 'green' or 'blue'.
In iPhoto Preferences -> Advanced, check the box for Embed Color Sync Profile, and this will embed a profile on every pic you add from now on.
As to the one's already in, Old Toad has kindly created an Automator action that will add an sRGB profile to pics already in iPhoto. You can downlaod it from here.

How to save vector work sharp for web?
Hello guys, I need all your help!
I am trying to import a full color vector work from illustrator into an iPad.
The original illustrator file is about 10MB and I am trying to achive size that is under 128K.
I used "save for web" but result is not sharp enough at all.
Is there a better way to save without loosing much detail and still keep the size small from illustrator?
Should I import to photoshop first to save? I am just throwing ideas.
Thanks,
W.I have finally figure out how to save files in smaller size with out loose much quality but now I am encounter with the another issue.
Files' (JPEG) typefaces are sharp and legible look perfect on iPad, when the same file (JPEG) imported to iPhone, the typeface was not able to read.
iPad is much bigger than iPhone. Images work perfect for iPad in theory it shouldn't have lack pixel issue.
It really beats me. I don't know how to figure this out. If you have any idea, please let me know your insight.
Thanks,

Photoshop CS6 unable to use due to display driver (Intel) problem
Hi
I am experiencing problems using Photoshop CS6 (not extended version). I have recently installed Design standard and I'm not having this problem with Illustrator.
Each time I run PS, I receive a pop up with "display driver Intel HD graphics drivers for Windows 8(R) stopped responding and has successfully been recovered". PS opens but I cannot use it and I have to force end task in task manager.
I have an Asus Laptop (i7) with Windows 8.1, graphics card Intel HD 4400, it also has an NVIDA Geoforce GT 740M graphic card.
so far:
I have installed the latest driver from Intel (10.18.10.3345).
I have re-booted in Safe Mode and can open PS - I receive the message "Photoshop has encountered a problem with the display driver, and has temporarily disabled enhancements which use the graphics hardware". I can use PS in safe mode. I then re-boot and can use PS normally, however after another re-boot or awakening from sleep the problem reappears.
I have tried switching to 'Basic' or "Normal' in the advanced settings. The problem occurs again.
I connect this laptop by VGA to an external Dell monitor, however it does not just happen when connected to the external.
Any help in resolving this would be very much appreciated!
Here is my help>system info log (retrieved when in safe mode after the warning message) :

This is because PS turned off the GPU when I opened it in safe mode.
When I can access PS normally, both cards are recognised:

is uninstalling the graphics card the only fix for this? I'm reluctant to try this, and cause more problems.. -
Why are 'saved as' .psd files so much bigger than original raw nef files?
I was under the impression that original raw files were the biggest possible. I appear to be very wrong. Why are 'saved as' .psd files so much bigger than original raw nef files?
I'm beginning to think that saving them as psd is a bad idea.
Yes, though I've heard all the arguments of keepng the original raw files (For ex. Did you throw away the negatives when you were using film) I se eno purpose in keeping them. Once I've made the initial adjustments--cropping, color correction etc. I don't feel a need to ever go back and never do. Most of my work is done in Photoshop and I like it that way--but suddenly finding myself with such huge files doesn't appeal to me at all--and other formats like tif...well never mind for now.Good point made c.pfaffenbichler however, my thinking is this--there is time spent on the raw file and then there is much more time spent on (usually a psd) the file once in Photoshop. For me to then go back to the orignal raw file, after having worked on it on PS would mean getting rid of all the work (larger amount of work, time wise and artistic wise) done on PS which seems pointless. Although the psd file does show your layers and stuff it only shows the end results of that layer. It does not show from where to where you pointed your brush, from what point to what point you changed the color or part of an image etc. etc.Anyhow I understand why most people keep their raw files, but this is the main reason why I do not. It would mean hours of work on an image you already worked on (and usually were satisfied with) to perhaps make some minor alteration. Also please note that though I was noce a pro photog, no I do it mostly for fun. Getting the exact red in my Coca Cola can has never been of importance. On the other hand, if there were a way of working on a raw file within Photoshop and keep it (save it as) a raw file equivalent, then I would absolutely do so.

Photoshop saves colors strangely
Hello. Strange thing I noticed. If I save a picture as .png then it's picture differs from what I see in photoshop, althought color picker shows me identical colors (I opened saved picture in paint). But if I make print screen of photoshop and open that screened picture in paint - then I get desired colors (as in photoshop) but color picker shows me differen rgb. Why??

In what app?
Is your display calibrated and profiled? Asked another way, what profile is associated with your monitor and why?
Mylenium is right, if a bit terse... If you have a display profile that is not sRGB IEC61966-2.1, and/or are displaying documents that are not sRGB IEC61966-2.1, then you can expect applications that implement color-management to display things differently than those that do not (and you likely have a mix of both).
Color management is not something that can be explained in a few sentences here. Go read up on it. There are a lot of overviews on the web.

ACR processing in CS6 much slower than CS5
A big advantage of hosting ACR in 64 bit CS5 vs in bridge was that then ACR would process multiple images at once when saving them to jpg which would reduce processing times by 30% or more. For some reason this doesn't seem to be the case with CS6. I just did a short test and CS6 won't process multiple images at once, and was 33% slower than CS5 at saving a batch of 5dmkii images to jpeg.
Has anyone else noticed this? Hopefully this limitation is due to beta status and the final release of ACR will be fully optimized for 64bit processing. It seems strange that their is hardly any improvement in 64 bit cs6 speed vs 32 bit cs5. I agree, gpu support for acr would great!

Bridge in CS5 was 32 bit only, and I observed the 32 bit converter as run by Bridge (or Photoshop 32 bit) wouldn't exercise all the cores, so the way I interpret your numbers is as follows:
1. ACR7 is 50% slower than its predecessor (34.25 seconds when run in Photoshop 64 bit vs. 22.59).
2. Bridge is now 64 bit, so you're running the same code in both cases, which is why you're seeing essentially the same number in Bridge as Photoshop.
