Photoshop "standalone" vs CS5 suite

Just thought I'd share something I discovered when trying to upgrade my copy of Photoshop Extended CS3 (Web Premium suite), as a warning for those wondering if they should upgrade to suite software (eg Web Premium,  Design Premium, etc) from a Photoshop "standalone" product:
You can't upgrade from CS3 or CS4 Web Premium (or any other suite of software) to CS5 Photoshop standalone.
So if you upgrade now from say CS4 Photoshop standalone to CS5 Web Premium, which you can do, you will be locked in to expensive suite software upgrades in the future and you will not be able to make the relatively cheap upgrade to CS6 Photoshop standalone.
This lock-in to the expensive suite software is to my eyes not at all clear on the purchase page on the Adobe store, so I went ahead and purchased the CS5 upgrade online thinking I had the eligible software required for the upgrade i.e. in this case CS3 Photoshop Extended. In fact, there is small print written on the purchase page, written in a tiny font, unconnected to the purchase item where it says that you can't do this upgrade, but I'm guessing, I'm not the only person to have fallen into this trap. Adobe did in the end give me a refund for my unusable CS5 upgrade, but it was a major waste of time, and IMHO pretty sneaky on Adobe's behalf. I've used their software for nearly 30 years and it's really turned me off them as a company, though I will continue to use my old version of Photoshop and my new version of Lightroom.
I'm a freelance photographer. When I bought the CS3 Web Premium suite originally, I had a bit of extra cash (it cost about $2000, if I remember rightly), and thought I'd have a play around with Illustrator and Dreamweaver as I was starting to build websites. As it turned out, I never used either. Illustrator I had no use for, and Dreamweaver was far too complex and slow for my needs. The only app I continued to use was Photoshop, which I use nearly every day. So essentially I made a big mistake, because now if I want to use Photoshop CS5 I have to buy it from scratch (which I'm not going to do - as I'm making far less money this year and I'm in no hurry to give Adobe $1300, which is what Photoshop costs in Europe).
Maybe this will help those wondering if now is the right time to upgrade to suite software.

Mac Gabe -
The first version of Ps I purchased was 2.5 in 1994 and this is the very first time I've ever heard the term "point product". Standalone, yes, point, no. If you're fairly new to the process of buying Adobe products, then it's entirely possible that you weren't around for the mess that was Adobe's rollout of  the first version of CS Suites. There was so much confusion, and of the type you are referring to, that it might be hard for someone who lived through that to believe there are folks (like you) who are new to the process and aren't intimately familiar with the policies. I believe, and someone correct me if I'm wrong, that in the wake of all that upgrade confusion, Adobe did, for a short while offer the ability to the suite products individually. What is clearly apparent is that they have not gone to lengths to make it abundantly clear to first time buyers all of the ramifications of each purchase option. While my polling may not be scientific, almost everyone I talk with who is buying Ps for the first time gets confused by the myriad of options available. Hell, I had to triple check that I was purchasing the correct suite version when I upgraded earlier this year. Even that was confusing.

  • Photoshop CS5 suite will not open files or any pictures

We are seeing a problem with our CS5 suite with Photoshop only. The actual Photoshop program will open and allow us to browse the menus, but we cannot open and recent files, or open any new pictures with it. Also we are not able to create a new file with Photoshop.
We have reinstalled the CS5 suite twice now with now changes. We have also verified that the CS5 suite is up to date with all the latest updates and patches needed. All other parts of the CS5 suite work on the computer.
Please let us know what other information you may need to help resolve this problem we are faced with.
    Thank you very much!

  • CS5 Suite Errors and  CS 5  Photoshop locked

I have just installed CS5 suite, with these errors
1/ Indesign fails to open, just crashes, issues a crash report
2/ Illustrator crashes when closing, but does seem to work, issues a crash report
3/ Photoshop CS 5 error when changing workspace,  Could not apply the workspace because the file is locked or you do not have the necessary access privileges. Use the ‘Get Info’ command in the Finder to unlock the file or change permissions on the file or enclosing folders.
And this error when saving the file , Could not save Preferences because the file is locked or you do not have the necessary access privileges. Use the ‘Get Info’ command in the Finder to unlock the file or change permissions on the file or enclosing folders.
My system is OS X 10.6.3, good clean 10 month install, running on 2008 Mac Pro 8 core
I also have CS3 suite installed,  all apps are OK
Very disappointed with the CS 5,
Does any one have any ideas, with three apps that have errors, I did try to set the CS5 settings folder with my permissions. Below is a link I found on this site , however it did not work
Navigate to /Users/YOURUSERNAME/Library/Preferences/Adobe Photoshop CS5 Settings
    Select that file File>Get Info
At the very bottom under permissions, hit the + icon.
Add your user name from the list that pops up.
    Highlight the user just added.
Click the gear icon to the right of the +/-
    Choose make owner.
Click the gear icon again and choose apply to folder contents.
    Open Photoshop.
    Regards

I was able to fix this stupidity by deleting the following:
    Quit Photoshop.
Goto your home - assume you're home is named john.
john/Library/Preferences and delete a folder named: "Adobe Photoshop CS5 Settings"
Launch Photoshop again and make a change to preferences.
Quit.  It should not give that error again.
You will see a new folder there with the same name, but this time, it's OK.  Also notice inside are now 10 items.
The one you trashed is empty, because the difference is that the permissions on the original folder are showing:
    Old one:
    System r/w
    wheel  r/w
    everyone  r
    The new one will be:
    john (me)  r/w
    wheel   r
    everyone  r

I have a PC running Windows XP (yes an antique) with CS3 Photoshop and InDesign and lightroom 2 (yes all antiques). I have acquired a PC running Windows 7 with no programs. I also have a MacBook pro  with full CS5 suite. The programs were already loaded with I got it as a gift. Question 1. If I find serial numbers used to download programs to the old PC, can those CS3 programs be put on the newer PC. Question 2. I really want to put CS5 suite on PC machines. Is that possible? Especially since my MacBook is showing some hard drive problems.

You should be able to get the CS3 programs installed and running on the new pc since CS3 is spec-ed for Windows 7 Service Pack 1.  Downloading the programs does not require a serial number.  You can find them here:  Download CS3 products  but you will need the serial number to activate the programs.  You might be able to find that thru your Adobe account online.
You will not be able to install the CS5 Mac version on a PC and you won't be able to trade it to a PC version either due to it being an older version.  Trades are allowed only for the latest version (CS6)

  • When I installed my CS5 suite I chose to not install Photoshop 32 bit can I later?

When I installed my CS5 suite I chose to not install Photoshop 32 bit can I later without installing the whole suite ?

    Mylenium,
I don't think your answer was 100% correct, when I installed the suite I was able to select Photoshop 32 bit and say do not install this program so there is a selective install process, I could have said no to many of the programs by right clicking on each one and chose "do not install"
So if I put my disks back in and the same menu comes up all I have to do is say no to all but Photoshop 32 bit and I can install just that one program.
So one of us is incorrect, whcih one of us is it??

  • Remote update cs5 suites

We have about 15 clients with different cs5 suites and some lose photoshop/dreamweaver installs on the network. both microsoft and osx clients.
What is the best way to keep these clients updated without running around all the time?
Was looking for some console update options but can't find a thing about that.
Adobe has a nice deployment toolkit which was perfect for deployment.
Also read about hosting your own update server. But nothing in the docs about remotely updating the clients.
anyone some good advice for this?
    thnx

    Hi Ashubijalwan1,
just to make sure there is no misunderstanding:
All Creative Suite Apps are updated except for the app with the name "Adobe Creative Cloud".
When I use the Creative Cloud Packager and select solely the core components, "Adobe Creative Cloud" is a part of them. The program itself shows a message saying that an update is necessary, but RUM won't update "Adobe Creative Cloud".
    Best regards,

How can I get photoshop and Illustrator CS5? I cannot see it anywhere. My computer(PC) can only use CS5

If you do not own a license for CS5 there is not much you can do to get it thru Adobe.  They only sell current versions of their software (CS6 or Creative Cloud).  You would need to find a third party vendor and take your chances with them.
If you do own a CS5 license you can download the software thru the following page and use your serial number to activate:

  • I used up my two downloads for my standard CS5 suite, my backed up program on my external hard drive isn't working. My serial number says it is invalid, what do I do?

I purchased the standard CS5 suite (photoshop, illustrator, in design, bridge) student package for my laptop (through a download process, not dvd, in which I had two downloads). I used my first one, that followed with my hard drive crashing. I used my second download, and then I had an accident with my laptop and had to purchase a new one. I backed up all of my programs onto an external hard drive and I just tried to re download adobe programs using that. When i enter my serial number it says it is invalid. What can I do? Live chat will not help me because I do not have the current CS6 or CC.

Double-check your serial number here: Find your serial number quickly
Serial numbers will sometimes become invalidated if they were hacked and made available on the internet.

  • Fonts in my CS5 Suite is like an Asian Restaurant menu...

I love Asian food but....I dont need the Asian FONTS
I can not get or understand why CS5  (PPRO, Photoshop) continues to display Fonts that I have specifically told Win7 Font Manager not to display
There is a Control Panel > Fonts> Setting that "Hides Fonts" that do not correspond to ones Language Setting. (in my case English)
The Font window shows that the Asian Fonts are Hidden.
...but not to my CS5 apps.
I still get fonts and all their variations cluttering my Font Menus in the CS5 Adobe apps... like :
    Batang
    Dotum
    Gulim
    Gunsuh
    Sim Sun
    MingLiu
    Meiro
    Kokika
    Aparajita
...would you like noodles or rice with that sir?
I have extensively and succesfully  deleted many Asian fonts from the system. but the above,  and more, refuse to delete because allegedly they are Adobe or  System Fonts.  The samples even display in respective Asian characters. (Japanese, Korean, Thai etc..)
Font Navigator (Bit Stream) indicates I have only 82 installed fonts in my system.  These are the fonts of my choice and is about right. They do not include the Asian fonts
Why does the CS5 Suite show me the Asian Fonts?
How do I clean them out?
What does Font xml do in the Adobe folder?
    Summary:
1.The listed Asian Fonts show as hidden in Win 7 Font Management
    2. They do not appear in Font Navigator as installed. I can probably find them in the system if I run the "Catalogue" function though.
3.They show up in Adobe app Font select menus.

    Craig,
That's correct; what's in the Win7 Fonts control panel is what I see in CS5 apps:
This is Photoshop, but Premiere Pro's titler is the same. I had all the annoying foreign language fonts before the script, and now they're gone. I've run the script on both of my edit boxen, and on my field machine, and haven't encountered any problems for having done so. I'll second your recommendation to restart after running the script; fonts display a little weird in the control panel until you do so. Other than that, it pruned a signicant number of typeface "choices" that I'd never choose.
I can't guarantee it'll work for you or for everyone, as I had nothing to do with the script, but I've been cruising along for a couple months now with the lighter font load.

  • What is the best preference settings to use for CS5 Suites

I upgraded my PC a few months back and I'm currently running the CS5 suites.  A few weeks ago I started having issues with the CS5 suites freezing up & in some cases even crashing on me.  I always run Illustrator, Photoshop, Indesign & bridge at the same time, as I'm constantly moving between program on any given project.  What I'd like to know, is if there's an optimum setting to use in the preferences for each program, including bridge to help them run more smoothly & efficiently, without the computer or programs bogging down or crashing on me.  Below is a list of the hardware I'm running, which I've been told is more than enough to run the CS5 suites.  Any information would be greatly appreciated, as I'm starting to get frustrated with the performance.
    Hardware & operating system:
    - Windows 7 service pack 3
    - EVGA X58 FTW3 motherboard
    - i7 960 4-Core CPU
    - GeForce GTX 470 Sli graphics card
    - Corsair Extreme 24 gigs ram
    - 3 TB 7200 RPM hard drive

Generally speaking, freezing and crashing problems don't have to do with performance configuration settings, and there are fairly few such settings that affect most applications. Video editing software tends to have a bunch, but that doesn't sound like it is pertinent to you.
Indeed, your hardware sounds far more powerful than you'd need to easily avoid problems based on performance limitations.
I suspect, then, that each of the problems you are seeing is a seperate unique problem not a result of a configuration choice. It'll need to be debugged carefully with full details, and as close as you can get to a reproducible case as possible.
In InDesign, about the only settings of relevance are whether Live Screen Drawing is turned on (images resize in realtime when you adjust their bounding boxes), and whether the View > Display Performance setting is set to Typical (the default) or High Quality.
You could also experiment with disabling Live Preflight.
You mention running 4 apps at once -- when you do so, are the non-active applications performing computation, or just sitting there idle? For instance, are you executing a complex filter operation in Photoshop at the same time as exporting a PDF in InDesign, all while you are drawing patterns in Illustrator? I assume the answer is Probably Not, in which case it lends strength to the hypothesis that the performance characteristics of your machine are not at issue here.

  • Uninstall Photoshop CS4 and CS5

    I have Photoshop CS4 and CS5 installed, CS4 also in x64 version.
    Also Acrobat Pro.
I'd like to uninstall all Photoshop stuff only, i.e. not Acrobat.
Before proceeding: will the uninstall also remove all the 'other' Photoshop matters?
    Bridge, Device Central etc.etc.
    Thanks!

    Hi
Uninstall the Adobe Creative Suite product through Add or Remove Programs Control (Windows XP) or the Programs And Features Control Panel (Windows Vista/Windows 7)
and select the program one by one and click on uninstall

  • Upgrading from CS2 Suite (Win) to CS5 Suite (Mac)

Over the last few days I have twice called Adobe UK sales and have been assured that I can easily upgrade my Windows CS2 suite to a Mac CS5 suite.
I was told that all I have to do is enter the CS2 Windows serial number during the CS5 Mac installation and it will be accepted.
However I have found no mention of this anywhere on the internet.
Has anyone been given the same or conflicting advise by Adobe for this type of scenario?

Adobe are even contracdicting themselves re CS5 upgrades.
I was told by the UK sales team that I wouldn't need to submit a letter of software destruction upgrading from CS2 Windows to CS5 Mac.
However, the Adobe on-line representative said I would.
I can understand this requiurement for a straight platform swap of the same version.
However, if I am upgrading, I surely need a valid suite to upgrade from?
If I destroy my CS2 I will no longer have a valid suite any longer!
I have also found out that PhotoShop Mac CS5 will apparently no longer have the ability to print printer profiling targets with colour management disabled. Supposedly Adobe labs are developing a separate utility for printing profiling targets but with no ETA. This means that I will have to continue to use an earlier version of PhotoShop anyway!
With these uncertainties, contradictions and complications I have now cancelled my order.
    Thanks again for your help.

  • Can I upgrade from Photoshop CS2 to CS5 after installing Lion?

Can I upgrade from Photoshop CS2 to CS5 after installing Lion?   Or should I have done it before installing Lion?

I think you are missing my point.
For the last many editions of the creative suite they have each been completely independent. There is no "going over a previous version. Each version stands on its own and is a clean install — as long as you haven't installed that specific version before.
And "obsolete" is a pretty relative term. With products as complex as the creative suite there are often features (or even whole applications) that change between versions. Many people I know keep earlier versions around, just for that very reason.

  • My CS5 suite won't open my images.

    Hi everyone:
I could really use your help. I'm against a deadline to prepare for a class and I just came across a bug in my CS5 suite. None of the programs will open my images. Do I have to re-install the software? I already updated the patch. Thanks so much for your input. -KS

    What Mr.Cox said …
    Additionally:
As with all unexplainable Photoshop-problems you might try trashing the prefs (after making sure all customized presets like Actions, Patterns, Brushes etc. have been saved and making a note of the Preferences you’ve changed) by pressing command-alt-shift on starting the program or starting from a new user-account.
System Maintenance (repairing permissions, purging PRAM, running cron-scripts, cleaning caches, etc.) might also be beneficial, Onyx has been recommended for such tasks.
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/system_disk_utilities/onyx.html
Weeding out bad fonts never seems to be a bad idea, either. (Validate your fonts in Font Book and remove the bad ones.)
