Photoshop to FCE?

It's been a LONG time since I've done this. Can you please tell me what is the best size, format, ratio, etc. to take individual graphics created in Photoshop and make a video out of it? I'm doing SD (720x486).
Thanks in advance.
Glenn

DPI is irrelevant for video. Pixels are what count. If you have an image that is 720x486 pixels it will fill the screen. If you have a larger image (more pixels in either or both dimensions) it will be larger than the screen. You can use that extra size for Ken Burns effects, or you can scale it back down in FCE to fit the screen. So, larger image files are not necessarily better; in fact if you give too large a file to FCE (say, a 25MP image file) it can goof up things.
Still images are not interlaced. DV is interlaced by definition. When you add a still image to a DV sequence it will be interlaced when rendered/exported from FCE unless you deinterlace the sequence. But you would only do that if you have a specific requirement for a deinterlaced video file. If you intend to burn a DVD from your FCE project, you should not deinterlace.
Aspect ratio for SD DV is 4:3, which is about 1.3:1

  • Quality when Rendering a PhotoShop in FCE (and example of..)

I work at a Birkenstock store. My boss asked me to make some "slides" for a TV commercial. I made them in Photoshop 300dpi and imported to FCE.
It looks great FCE but then as soon as I render the sequence it looks terrible.
I put an example of both on a page on our website:
    http://theshoehousestores.com/birko1/beforeafterproblem.html
My plan was to upload the FCE fie and the assets to the TV station and let them ouput it.
How can I get the image to not render so badly?
    Jeff

Yes both on a video monitor and my LCD monitor that came with the computer. Both are the same.
The only reason I did them so big was because when I made them smaller they seemed even worse. When I import the big ones they fit without any need to resize (the smaller ones too).
I'll read up on the info you offered in the link and let you know what I learn.
What I get most of all from your posts and the others you have tried to help is that this is a fixable problem and it should not be so "muddy" when rendered and in the final output. Am I correct?
I really do appreciate your help so far.. Thank you

  • Importing from photoshop to FCE

Ok, I know this might be a photoshop question, but since I am trying to import into FCE MAYBE someone can help me here. I have been trying to crop out a picture of a hand in photoshop, but when I try to transfer just the hand to FCE I'm not sure what to do. (even after reading and re-reading) I have tried dragging it, and importing, but it keeps coming with a background. I have tried to save it in different ways such as PNG. I think one of my problems is, once I crop it in PS I don't know how to save it without a background. Does anyone know what I am doing wrong? I am sure it is not as hard as I have been making it!! HELP!
    thanks!
    ruez

In Photoshop I generally use one of the tools mentioned by Tom to select the image, then I copy that selection (cmd-C) and create a new layer with the command Layer/New/Layer via Copy (cmd-J). This creates a new layer in the same file with the selected image. Then I make all layers not visible, except the new layer that I want to export.
Now using File/Save As I select the output format (for example PNG or TIFF) and save a copy of my image, ready to be imported to FCE. Only what is visible at this time will be actually saved in the PNG or TIFF.
Finally I save the full .psd file (with all visible or not visible layers) for future use; later I can make any or all its layers visible again, change the selection and create a new version of the image to import to FCE, using the same procedure above.

  • Resize stills in Photoshop or FCE?

I have quite a few stills in Photoshop (CS2) which I want to use in FCE. They are large (4600 x 2900 pixels) files. What seems to me to make sense is to open a new Photoshop file using the NTSC DV 720x480 preset (which has the 0.9 pixel aspect ratio), paste a scaled down copy of the image into this file, flatten it, save it, and then bring that into FCE. Of course, I have to do that again for each still. I seem to remember reading somewhere, though, that there are effects that are possible in FCE if you import larger files. Is this true? If so what does it refer to? If there were some advantage to bringing in stills bigger than 720x480, how big should/could they be? Surely, you couldn't have say, a hundred 35MB images you were trying to work with all at once.

The only real advantage to having larger stills in FCE is if you want to apply motion, zoom in on them etc
Even so, I usually double the 720x480 video standard size to do this
Stills don't need to be the size you have and depending on your puter, could really bog things down.
I am not a true Photoshop expert but I know you are able to create a macro in Photoshop that will allow you to do batch re-sizing

  • Import from photoshop to fce

I'm trying to import a title page that I created from photoshop cs2 into fce. I kept it as a .psd file and when I import it , the color is no longer there - it is grayscale.
    Any suggestions?
    Susie

It was created in photoshop on the same mac I'm using for the video. The contents are wording, a background and a colored border. If I flatten the image and save as a jpeg, the color appears. I wanted to keep as a psd in case I needed to make changes and I've been able to do similar titles in the past.
    Any suggestions?

  • Photoshop vs. Photoshop Extended and FCE

Due to a variety of reasons, I need to move up (way up) from Photoshop Elements to the full Photoshop program.
I'm reading all about the neato video-related features that the PS "Extended" version has for users. It all sounds pretty sweet, but I'm wondering if the extra cash to pony up for it is worth it.
Also, the kinds of things that Extended can do brings up another question in my mind: Can FCE handle everything that Extended offers? I'd hate to buy Extended, only to find out that it overpowers FCE and is a better match for FCP/FCS.
I'd appreciate any guidance from those "in the know." Thanks in advance.
Before I forget: I'm struggling with deciding between CS4 vs. CS5, too .. I'd also appreciate any help on that question, especially vis-a-vis video.

    Hi -
Ask yourself what your goals are.
If you are interested in pursuing a professional career in video post production, then having both a working knowledge and efficient skill set for working in Adobe CS is essential.
The Adobe CS is the de facto standard in professional edit bays worldwide, and is used to create, manipulate and convert graphics 24/7 around the world.
I cannot imagine an editor being hired today that was not at least familiar with Adobe CS and as proficient in Photoshop as FCE/FCP.
If you are a hobbyist, then PS elements will be fine. That is the market for which it is intended.
If you are aspiring towards a higher level of production ability and quality, then buying the Adobe CS is an investment that you will not regret.
Having Adobe CS will allow you to take your FCE projects to a higher level.
Learning curve: steep. Cost: steep. Value to you once you get going in it: priceless.

  • Aperture and FCE

I'm planning on using FCE for a project that is half video and half slide show (intermingled). The photos for the slide show component are from Aperture. The Aperture photos are RAW. Do I need to convert the photos to JPEGs to use in FCE? Are there any other issues associated with importing Aperture photos into FCE?
    Looking forward to any guidence!
    PowerMac G5 Dual 2.0 GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    Hi(Bonjour)!
I'm pretty sure that FCE cannot handle RAW file directly.
This format give huge files (to gain more resolution and color correction possibility without quality lost when printing) and you don't need a such resolution.
Try to drag a RAW file into browser and in timeline to see the result.
Personnaly, I use TIFF format, from photoshop as FCE see photoshop file as a sequence and correctly handles square/non square pixel issue.
I start with pictures around 1500 X 1000 pixel size to be able to scale it properly.
Do a simple search in this forum with "photograph, photoshop document" .

  • Unable to access iOmega external hard drive

Hope I am posting in the correct location.
I have had two externals, an iOmega and a Seagate, connected to my iMac for a year or so. Have always been able to access their contents from most any program. Mostly I use Photoshop Elements and Final Cut Express.
For some reason the iOmega does not show up in the Devices drop down menu. It means I must drag an item out onto the desk top from the iOmega to open it in Photoshop or FCE. Really time consuming.
The iOmega still shows up on the desktop and appears to be be complete and working fine.
    Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

If the above settings corrections don't work...
    I'd Zap the Pram: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1379
    Check for drive in Devices.
Then I'd use Apple's Disk Utility program - Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility - and run the Repair Disk system on the drive.
Both of these recommendations are generic tests that fix a multitude of issues with hard drives on a Mac. They do not change any of your files.

  • Making 3D animated effects for photos

Are you able to create 3D photo effects, a la Riding Giants, The Kid Stays in the Picture, etc...by just using PhotoShop and FCE? (not just a simple ken burns effect) or is this something that has to be done in AfterEffects? Does Motion allow you to do this as well? I was thinking I could just take a photo, cut it into layers and then stack the layers in a FCE timeline with different zoom times...or am I being naive?
    Message was edited by: mikedunny

I can get textures, but i cant get any animated textures to work.
Well, that would require PS to support animated textures in the first place, would it not? And it simply doesn't. That asisde it's a pretty nonsensical workflow - whatever you are trying to do by hopping between 3 programs could probably be done easily in Blender's comp/ shading tree with direct access to texture data, render passes and all that. Realyl. For everything else you might wanan check this old article of mine to get an idea about a workflow that actually makes sense and plays out the benefits of working with render passes...

  • What is the best file format for photos?

    Greetings.
I am going to be importing some photos into FCE 3.5.1 to do some effects and motion. What is the prefered file format form Photoshop for FCE? TIFF, JPEG, and PS format all import, but I'm just wondering if one is prefered over the other.
My images will be pretty big, 3000 pxels x xxx at 72dpi, so I can move in and out, and maybe pan.
    Thanks.
    Jonathan

PNG, PSD. Don't make the image larger than you need to.

  • Recconect Stills to Media

    Hello!
I am still doing my animatic and for that I have been importing jpegs from photoshop into FCE.
In Photoshop I made some changes to those Jpegs and FCE asked if i would like to recconect to media. Most of them i recconected, but some I clicked "continue" by mistake...
Those appear as unrendered. Even if I render all or right click on it and do reconnect media it doesn´t work... How can I fix this?
    Thank you.

The media card is only for "media"... as you say. Pictures, videos, files/documents, music.

You do not want to move your contacts to your SIM card, as the SIM is designed to hold only one name/one phone number and no email address, nothing else. Instead, make a backup of your old device using the BlackBerry Desktop Software and then restore that backup to your new device, if you had made a previous backup.
Did you have BlackBerry Protect installed on the old device? If so, when you log in your BlackBerryID to the new device, you can use your previous BlackBerry Protect data to restore to the new device.

  • Manipulating photoshop files in FCE...  HELP!!!

    Hi all,
I am going nuts!! I am not a photoshop expert, but I am doing a job that requires some graphics be imported into FCE. What I need to do is stack multiple clips of the same image on top of one another, one by one, so that they eventually cover up a screen underneith.
The image that I have from photoshop is a .pdf file. When i import it in and put it on the timeline, i am seeing the white background around the object. I obviously can't have this because as i stack the images I will begin to see the white background that is attached to each image. Does anyone know how I would remove this white background so that I only have the object itself showing up on the canvas???
I REALLY, REALLY appreciate your help. I've been messing with this for hours!! Thanks,
    Karen

    Hi Tom,
I have tried to do this as well. I have another post... down the list a little bit that addresses what happened. .pdf was the only one that preserved the original colors... If you don't mind checking out my other post, I'd really appreciate it.

  • Poor Image Quality In FCE With Photoshop Imports

I'm using scans created in Photoshop in my current FCE project, and am extremely disappointed with the image quality. All scans are 72 pixels/inch, 720x534 pixels (changed to 720x480 for import), sharpened with Unsharp Mask. In Photoshop, they look terrific. Imported into FCE and viewed in the viewer, they look terrific. When dropped onto the canvas to add to the timeline, suddenly they look like crap. The sharpness is gone, the edges are pixelated, and most are rendered unusable. What happened? Can I fix it? Thanks in advance.

Really!? I'm surprised, as those numbers come from the Apple Pro Training Series book on FCE. But ok, I'll redo my images at 720x540. I should still make a version at 720x480 for import, to avoid "squeezing" the image, right? Should I avoid sharpening the image at all, or just cut back on the amount (or does this depend on the image)? When you say "the canvas is a reduced display output," do you mean that this reflects the compression that occurs with the DV format? Thanks, Tom, for your help.

  • Photoshop files in FCE - Cannot Open Project

I have a series of Photoshop files (RGB with about 10 layers a piece).
I am able to import a file into FCE HD and move the layers around as tracks - everything works great.
I save the file, and close. When I try to re-open the file, I get the dreaded "Cannot open project file".
I have tried this with an external drive and saving to the desktop. I have also tried importing normal pictures - no problem. It's when I import layers. I have been able to isolate the problem to layered Photoshop files.
    Any ideas?
    thanks.

Any PS file that has transparency that is imported
into a PAL project will corrupt the file, so
that you cannot open it again. Sorry.
See this (9th post down) which showed that any file created in Photoshop with its type as ".psd", whether with or without transparency, will give this fault. However, a file created in Photoshop with .tif will be safe even if it has transparency.

  • Black from photoshop is not black in FCE

    Hi, writing from Italy...
I just need some help for my "black" in FCE HD (version 3.0).
As I need to cover the old subtitles written in white on a black frame,
I made a small black strip in Photoshop (7.0).
I made a transparet file and fill the black color in it.
It is saved as Photoshop file.
The color type is RGB, file size is 720-540..it shold be all OK.
But once I imported the file in FCE, the black looks brownish.
    Slightly.
I tried also making another file with "Background color in black", but
    it is the same.
I check the color, importing the minutes of timeline to the tape and
looking at it on the TV screen.
On my small TV, the brownish color really doesn't show.
But I fear that on a large screen with a powerful projector it
    will prove to be brownish.
(In the past, some slight defects that
I could never see either on the screen of MAC
or on the image projected by a family-type projector, were actually seen in a cinema hall.)
Can anyone tell me what I can do for it?
or Am I worrying too much??
    Thanks and Grazie!
    Minobu

What was the original title created with, can't you use the same tool to draw a black box over the old one? Is this a capture from tape, if so analogue or digital?
If you have captured this material from a non-digital source then you will have difficulty matching the black as the colour values of the analogue source are never as accurate as digital. It may, in this case, mean finding, through trial and error, the correct value of colour that matches your strap.
If the file was digital then if you use the application that created the strap in the first place the colour values should match.
