Photoshop to InDesign size problem

I created a 3.5 x 2" business card in Photoshop CS3.  I added a 1/8th bleed margin bringing the file size to 3.62 x 2.127" at 300 dpi resolution.  I saved to a jpg file
I created a document in InDesign CS4 3.5 x 2 with no margins and a 1/8th bleed resolution 300 dpi.  When I placed the jpg file in InDesign, it came in 1/8th" smaller on 2 sides.
What am I doing wrong?
Thanks for your help.

Photoshop is a pixel-based program and the images you save have pixel dimensions. If you choose to output to physical media (paper) the size you choose determines the resolution, or physical size of each pixel on the page. Unless you resample, any scaling you choose to do alters the size, not the number, of pixels.
InDesign, which began life as an application for laying out printed pages is very much about physical didmensions, and about type, which for legibility should remain as vectors for smooth printing. A Postscript Point (which is the unit most people use when doing electronic publishing in points an picas) is 1/12 of a Pica. There are 6 Postscript Picas to the inch, so one point is 1/72 inch.
At an effective resolution of 300 ppi, 48 pixels would be .16 inch, or 11.52 pts, reasonable for body text (maybe even a bit large) but too small for most headline applications. If you scale the image, though, and the effective resolution goes down to 200 ppi the the type size goes to about 17pts. It may well also start to show jaggies along what should be smooth edges if it's been rasterized, as would be the case saving as jpeg.
Nobody meant to put you down by pointing out what was wrong with your workflow, and you did ask. We were trying to impress upon you that comfortable as you might be working in Photoshop and saving as jpeg, this is NOT a good workflow for print, even if there is no type involved. Once you've saved that jpeg you've locked the sizes and relative postions of all your design elements, and you've started to throw away good image data with jpeg compression. A high quality jpeg would probably be OK for most commercial print work, but why would you want to save art in a lossy format and risk further damage if you need to edit. Further, jpeg supports neither transparency nor image layers, making future editing a chore.
Since ID supports placing of many other formats, including .psd and .pdf/pdp, those are among the preferred formats for most experienced users. TIFF is also good choice, and an old standby supported by nearly every layout application on the planet. When going to print, the quality of your artwork is paramount. Art you would put on a website and find acceptable is almost never good enough to print except at very small sizes.

  • Photoshop to InDesign size issue

I'm working on some CD packaging in Photoshop, and want to put it into InDesign for crop marks and such.
My Photoshop file is 9.5 x 4.75 (inches). I then add a .125 bleed to the canvas making it 9.627 x 4.877. It is at 300 dpi.
I then fire up InDesign and create a new document at 9.5 x 4.75 with a locked .125 bleed on all the edges. I then place the PSD file directly into InDesign, but the size of the PSD doesn't match the size of the InDesign canvas, and doesn't scale to the same proportions either.
I also tried saving my PSD as a PDF with the same results.
What am I missing guys? Thanks for the help, and don't be afraid to teach me something about resloutions/measuring that I don't know.
    PS: I'm running CS5

    Larry G. Schneider wrote:
Excuse me but 9.5 plus a 0.125 bleed on all sides should equal 9.75 for the new size. The same for the other dimension. Or am I missing something?
    Yup. That's right.
Noah, how much too small is the image in ID? Would that calculation mistake account for it? If not, are you clicking and releasing without dragging, or click/dragging a frame?
Web images are almost NEVER usable for print, even if they have enough pixels. They tend to be highly compresses and full of visible artifacts. To know if you have enough pixels (but not if the image itself is any good), select the image and check the "effective ppi" in either the Info Panel or  the Ling information inthe Links panel. You'll see it listed along withthe "actual ppi" figure, which is totally irrelevant. For press you want to shoot for 300 ppi, but you can get away with 250 for a soft image or background. For digital, you can go down into the 180 -200 effective ppi range.

  • Problems with photoshop and indesign on cc

I just dowloaded the trial version of creative cloud CC, and frankly Im starting to regret it.  I keep getting an error message when I try and load photoshop and Indesign,
it tells me that the application manager that I need to launch this is missing or damaged.
I have downloaded application manager and nothing. Have reinstalled it and nothing. only two that work are bridge and illustrator after a day of reading and deleting and reinstalling crap.
    HELP PLEASE!!

    Hi wacyz,
Kindly specify the OS version that you are using so that we can help you appropriately.
Try to uninstall Creative Cloud and application manager using cleaner mentioned below.
Use the CC Cleaner Tool to solve installation problems | CC, CS3-CS6
    Install Adobe Application Manager
Win : Adobe - Adobe Application Manager : For Windows : Adobe Application Manager : Thank You
Mac: Adobe - Adobe Application Manager : For Macintosh : Adobe Application Manager : Thank You
Run Adobe Application Manager, it would update to Creative Cloud.
Try to launch the applications and revert if the problem persists.

  • Officejet Pro 8500 and Adobe Photoshop CS4 64 bits Image Size Problem

I have a Windows Vista Ultimate 64 bits desktop computer. After installing the Officejet Pro 8500 multifunctional drivers all was working OK. Images were being printed nice and with the correct size using Windows print option. After installing Adobe CS4 suite, all images printed from windows or Photoshop have incorrect size (photoshop prints it smaller and windows prints it larger).
I've installed all photoshop patches and re-install Officejet 8500 drivers, but the problem persists.
I've also tried to make a clean installation of the whole computer from the beginning
Does anyone know how to solve this problem? What would be the windows/HP files that were changed by Photoshop?
    Thank you.

I'm on the phone with HP tech support about this problem. He said he's gonna charge me to fix the problem and than he put me on hold. I'm waiting to find out how much money I've saved. You put some dollars in my pocket. Thanks!!!!!!

  • Different Colors when printing from Photoshop and InDesign CS3

Different Colors when printing from Photoshop and InDesign CS3
    I have the following problem:
When printing from Photoshop or InDesign to a PostScript printer, Adobe recommends to let Photoshop handle the colors (I use the German version, so I don't know the exact term used, it changes slightly in all CS3 apps anyway).
The manufacturer however told me to let the PostScript printer handle the colors.
When I chose this option in Ps's print dialog and then choose ISO Coated as the printer pfofile, the results are fine.
But when I place the exact same image in an InDesign file and print from InDesign or export to PDF and print via Acrobat, again using "Printer handles colors", the results are the exact same as if I had used Ps and chosen to let Ps handle the colors (way too saturated and a bit too red).
    ·Photoshop CS3
    ·InDesign CS3
·Test image is a TIFF in CMYK Fogra 27 Coated (which is also the working color space in Ps and ID.
    ·Printer: Xerox Docucolor 3535
    ·Printer profile: ISO Coated
How can I make sure the printer handles the colors in other CS3 apps than Ps? I tried it with ID's print dialog (translated from the German version: Color Management > Options > Color Handling: PostScript-printer decides colors).
    Thanks a lot!

RE: "You don't indicate what Xerox printers you have"
In my first post I named it, is that the information you need?
    Docucolor 3535 using Splash 3535
That's interesting, so I have to find a way to turn off the printer's Color Management function? I mailed them, hope they can tell me how to do it easily. They usually just tell me to not use any profiles and so on, but that's the general rule in this area, I'm really tired of hearing it. Everybody seems to think profiles and LAB mode are nuclear science and I should stay away from it.
Anyway, the test image I'm using is a simple photograph (size A3, 300dpi), so no transparencies at all. I'm placing this image into an equally large ID file and print it from ID, then export it to PDF-X/3 and print it from Acrobat. Hope that helps.

  • If I don't know how to use mini bridge in Photoshop and InDesign.

I tried to use mini bridge from photoshop and inDesign both but unsuccessfully. Displays message "Waiting for Bridge CS5..." and it seems for hours and hours but not working... .
But Adobe Bridge is working perfectly. Does anyone has the same problem?

So, I have the same problem with the mini bridge not loading. I noticed it also wouldn't load at my school on their Mac computers, too. I wondered if it had anything to do with me only having the free trial but the school's computer isn't free trial. I looked at the two solutions you've provided.
    1. When I went to the following...
    Win 64 bit machines: \Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Adobe\SwitchBoard\SwitchBoard.exe
There was no SwitchBoard folder, or SwitchBoard.exe on my computer anywhere... (Windows 8 64 bit)
    2. I then tried to see about your second solution and followed the link... it doesn't support my computer version ><
So I'm not really sure what to do since I need to get this working in order to complete my class assignment.... I am using the free trial at the moment but plan to buy the monthly plan through Adobe Creative Cloud for Photoshop, InDesign and Illustrator.

  • Photoshop CS5.1 Crashes Upon Opening: "Photoshop has encountered a problem with the display driver-"

Every time I try to open photoshop I get a window that pops up and says:
"Photoshop has encountered a problem with the display driver, and has temporarily disabled GPU enhancements.  Check the video card manufacturer's website for the latest software.

The error happens so quickly that I don't have time to do anything.  Please help.  >.<  I've been on hold for *checks phone* 2 hours exactly.  Wow.  It is a legit copy and was working last month with no trouble.  I've updated the drivers and tried a few solutions that have worked for other people that I found on Google (such as disabling CUDA and setting my "power management mode" to "prefer maximum performance" on my video card) but so far nothing has worked.
    Thanks in advance!

It has stopped crashing because somehow it turned off "Enable GL Drawing" on its own because I could never even get a menu open.  Not sure how it did that but I am grateful.  I still get the error when I open Photoshop up but at least it hasn't crashed yet.  At the time when it was crashing I never would have been able to get you the system info due to the speed that it was crashing upon just opening the program.  In case you still need it:

  • How to preserve and keep 2 Pantones from Illustrator, via Photoshop, to InDesign?

    Ciao!
I have designed a 3D illustration in Illustrator (version 15.0.2), this illustration need to be printed for a magazine cover and I want to use 2 pantone colours for it.
The 2 pantone colours are assigned form the Swatch Palette.
The image is in CMYK (file > document colour mode > CMYK).
The illustration is in 3D and the text has been convereted in outline. But I have not expanded the appareance of any element.
I want to add more depht to the illustration and Photoshop seems the best solution for shadows and visually looks better.
Plus InDesign can manage Photoshops files with Effects very nicely.
[I find difficult and problematic to import Illustrators files with added Effects in InDesign, it leaves always a white background around the image and I don't know how to get rid of that.]
How do I import the image in Photoshop (version 10.0.2) and keep the pantone?
If I export/import the image as .psd format the files gest converted in CMYK automatically.
In the Swatch Panel (next to the pantones I want to use) I see two square boxex the first has a round gray circle (I don’t know what this means), the second has 4 triangles (this I believe means CMYK).
In the Separation Preview panel (if I click Overprint Preview) I have listed the 4 CMYK colours and the 2 pantones but if I turn off the 5 CMYK eyes I only see the white artboard, it’s like if the pantone are not assigned.
After adding the shadows in Photoshop I need to import the file from Photoshop to InDesign and the final file need to be transparent because there's a backround at the bottom and a box of text in between the background and the illustration.
I could place the bacground and the text in photoshop no problem for that...
The questions are how do I import the 3D file from Illustrator, keep the pantone and add the Photoshop shadow?
Hope anyone can help me as I'm going to press soon...
Please feel free to ask me anything else if need to answer the questions.
Many many thanks in advance if you can help me.
    ASTIK

This first image is the file in ID with High Quality Display on
This is with Overprint Preview and that what I aming for, roughly, for the final. [I'm not sure what is the purpose of overprint preview in ID].
This is the 3 plates of Black and two pantones
This is the plate of Black plate
This is the Pantone 812 c plate
and finally this is the Pantone 8201 c plate
Hope this can help to get the best solution

  • Photoshop or InDesign CS6 - which one is correct?

I got stuck on a problem where I couldn't get Acrobat's print to match what I print out of Photoshop (Epson 7880) using Source>Print Profile "Photoshop Manages Colors" workflow.
I traced the problem to InDesign.
The screenshot below shows the Photoshop sRGB document (left) with the blue background, 22/56/158.
The right side shows InDesign blue background (sRGB is Working RGB) with the identical 22/56/158 RGB fill.
Open the screenshot in Photoshop (use the embedded profile, sRGB), and sample the blue background in each app.
There is a considerable difference between them that could account for the difference I am complaining about the prints not matching.
So I have to wonder which app is correct, Photoshop or InDesign...if I am missing something?

    conroy,
do you have a custom monitor profile, or sRGB equivalent?
your Id screenshot cuts off the area i can confirm you are using RGB (not CMYK), i also can't tell what your Id working RGB is, or your Ps Source Profile - so it is hard for me to understand what you did
however, Ps' color picker on my MacBookPro CS6 looks like yours - the one i posted was from my MacPro CS6 and what i am used to seeing in Ps
that may be a clue -- how do i get my MacPro to use that style color picker in Ps?
    +++++++
    gener7
my Id document only has RGB objects, the blue swatch is "RGB"
my Id Working RGB is sRGB (the same as my Ps Source Profile)
in theory, the same RGB numbers using the same source profile should "match" on the monitor (calibrated or generic) in this test (if InDesign converts its Working RGB to Monitor RGB like Photoshop)
moreover, getting Info in Ps on each app's blue background should be a numerical "match" in my screenshot, they're not

Hello, I bought and subscribed to Creative suite in June, for Photoshop, Illustrator, Indesign and Bridge, but my subscription is telling me I only have Photoshop, can you tell me how to rectify this error, so i can download creative suite onto my desktop

Thanks for your reply. I was able to find help through a tech support chat session and the person helped me edit my /etc/hosts file and it solved the problem.
For anyone else experiencing this issue (Mac OS X):
Close all other programs and sign out from the Adobe Desktop App
From the Finder, Go > Go to Folder...
    Type /etc and hit enter
Find "hosts" file (only "hosts", there were similar files such as hosts.config but only open the one that says "hosts"
Open the file, and replace the entire content with ### Host Database## localhost is used to configure the loopback interface#
Close the file, sign back into the Adobe Desktop App
    Problem solved!

  • Photoshop CS6 & Doc Size & File Size???

Working on a collage and have a relatively scall document, 6"x10" at 300dpi and used the Place command to add images and arrange and have 14 layers. The images were resized to fit using the Transform scale too. Was watching the document size at the lower left of the document window and it showed that the Doc was 34.3 M/178 M. Looked good so I went to save the beast as a PSD. At 75% of the save it threw an error message saying the document was greater than 2GB in size. Hmm, why did the doc size show otherwise. So ended up saving as a PSB whic worked. But the responsiveness of my system went to hell until I shut down Photoshop. I mean it was almost unresponsive. Starting Photoshop again, opening the PSB and making a few changes and my system was flying again. So maybe processing the PSD then throwing the error managed to grab all the resources.
So maybe there are two issues I have seen, one is Photoshop reporting the wrong doc size and the other bad error processing?
Photoshop CS6 with the latest patch applied, Windows 7 x64 with 16GB RAM, i7 processor.
Here are a couple of screen shots that show the doc size problem

I appreciate your desire to make Photoshop work the way you want it to, but why not consider placing the images as flattened raster layers?  Work at a higher resolution if you're concerned about losing quality in moving them around and rotating them, but you should really ask yourself:  Why do I want to fight with this ridiculous "smart object" embedding scheme and fight with such a huge file size instead of doing it the prudent way and ending up with a file that's much more efficient?

I can not answer for Mike but I can tell you why I do collages some what like Mike placing user image file in as they are.  Populated Collages done that way are still Photoshop Layer Documents and can be tweaked by the user.  If you flatten and change image files on the user you destroy work that they have done creating layered images so they can be tweaked using these layers. The way I look at it is populated collages are works in progress untill they ready for final output. Flattening and Pasting in resized image are destructive processes and may even change composition by croping images. I feel it best not to distroy users work if at all posible.  Let the user do that if they wish to.  Using Smart Object let user use any image file they want, Any size, resolution and Image format that Photoshop support.  If the user chooses to use RAW files, PSD files  or any other it their choice and they may have a good reason to use PSD files for a given collage.  When the collage is ready for final output the user is free to flatten and save a compressed jpeg if the wish to save disk space and keep a copy of the collage. They do not have to save a layered collage if they don't wish too.  They only need to that if the batch process collage for later tweaking or the want to continue to work on the collage at some future date.  You don't fight you use smart object. They are only huge if you save layered files their rendered layers are not huge. If the filel is falttened the total rendered flat layer is just canvas size.

I have a PC running Windows XP (yes an antique) with CS3 Photoshop and InDesign and lightroom 2 (yes all antiques). I have acquired a PC running Windows 7 with no programs. I also have a MacBook pro  with full CS5 suite. The programs were already loaded with I got it as a gift. Question 1. If I find serial numbers used to download programs to the old PC, can those CS3 programs be put on the newer PC. Question 2. I really want to put CS5 suite on PC machines. Is that possible? Especially since my MacBook is showing some hard drive problems.

You should be able to get the CS3 programs installed and running on the new pc since CS3 is spec-ed for Windows 7 Service Pack 1.  Downloading the programs does not require a serial number.  You can find them here:  Download CS3 products  but you will need the serial number to activate the programs.  You might be able to find that thru your Adobe account online.
You will not be able to install the CS5 Mac version on a PC and you won't be able to trade it to a PC version either due to it being an older version.  Trades are allowed only for the latest version (CS6)

  • PHOTOSHOP CS6 BRUSH SIZE

    PHOTOSHOP CS6 GRANDEZZA PENNELLO
    avete qualche soluzione?

who is dear to me solve my problem?
usually my quick way to reduce or enlarge the diameter of the brush (for example, if I am acting on a layer mask) is ctrl + alt and move the mouse to the left / right. in other cases, act directly on the board brush.
as you will see from the photo is the range of the exponential scale of the brushes in photoshop CS6 and so it is unmanageable. working with large photos interests me especially the last part, and then I would like the scale from 0 to 5000 px grow evenly (for example there is now a 84 px there were 2500 px).
    you have any solution?

  • Copying text from Photoshop to InDesign

    Dear InDesign Community,
I am working on updating a 60 page .pdf which was is extremelly blurry and unsearchable because each page was individually created in Photoshop (CS6) at size 8.5x11 and then put into a 6x7 sized document via Microsoft Publisher ( I weep as I write this sentene). I am currently rebuilding the file in InDesign and I was wondering if there was any way to copy and paste the formatted text from Photoshop cs6 to Indesign cs6 without losing the formatting. The end product is supposed to be a good quality pdf for web that is also a searchable document. Please advise.

No, sort of. If you can live with the text EXACTLY as it is in
Photoshop, kill all the layer except the text and save as PDF from
Photoshop. Place the PDF in InDesign and it will retain its vector
properties and formatting. You will not be able to edit anything.
