Photoshop to InDesign - What works? What should be done in InDesign versus Photoshop?

Hello!
I have been using Photoshop for years, and before very recently any work I've ever done started in Photoshop - whether it be a logo or newsletter layout. From there I learn whichever tricks I need to for whatever the customer has asked - ie: If it's a logo that needs to be huge for a banner - I break it down piece by piece in photoshop - bring it in to Illustrator and save it as the printer wants it... Two months ago, I got a job laying out newspapers which I've been doing on InDesign -as I learn it on the go... I do alot of the ads in Photoshop now, because I feel like I can make better designs in it, then drag the resulting 300ppi jpeg into the InDesign layout.
1. What would be better about creating ads in InDesign over Photshop?
2. Has anyone ever made full pages in Photoshop and then drag the resulting jpeg into InDesign - and what were the results
3. Has anyone ever done a newspaper/magazine page-by-page in Photoshop, saved each as PDF, then combined? What were the results?
3. Does there exist there a quick-guide for InDesign whicch gives rules-of-thumb for printing on different paper qualities? For instance, I'm looking for general rules for newsprint layouts/designs - how big text must be, image size minimums, etc.?

It's not the software that makes better designs - it's you!
Your adverts are only 1 dimensional - meaning that that advert can only be purposed for that layout and that size and isn't that flexible to work with.
If you use CMYK in Photoshop, and use 100% black that would be better for Newspapers.
Newspapers have a lower ink limit because it's a pourous paper, meaning the more ink you use the longer it takes to dry, or possibly smudge as there isn't enough soakage in the paper to absorb all the ink.
300 PPI images in JPEG possibly cause the ink limit to be too high for newspapers. But I think that the newspapers would run your final files through a RIP to unsatuarte all the colours.
Use CMYK in PHotoshop - and use Text Layers, Vector Shapes, and Vector Masks. Be wary of Ink Limits.
Also - save the resulting file as a Photoshop Editable PDF - rather than JPG.
Your results will be much more pleasing.

InDesign has the ability to use Vector and Raster, and doesn't flatten everything into Raster like you see with a JPEG.
Ultimately, Illustrator would be best for creating the adverts, and place an .ai with pdf compatible file into InDesign.

NEVER - Photoshop is not a Page Layout Tool - far more controls in InDesign or Illustrator for this sort of thing.
Photoshop is a photo editing software.

I've seen it before - be prepared for a headache say if someone wants to take out a paragraph in a 20 page article, open all the articles and edit the page endings???
Madness - don't do it - it's not worth your while - InDesign is the Page Layout Tool

Go to to the image I'm working on --- selected the image, the clicked on edit. When nothing happened I double clicked the image. Still elements didn't open. Then I opened the Elements editor, went back to iphoto and tried the entire process again. the photo still didn't open on Elements 13 for editing.
I have 3 Elements 13 books as well as looked on line--all my references say the exact same thing ---- iPhoto>Preferences>advanced>edit in external program>photoshop Elements

I spoke with application technical support. There appears to be nothing wrong with my copy of iPhoto. However there is no support from Adobe. I waited for over 1.5 hours for chat support several days ago, and finally gave up.

You are probably choosing the obvious file rather than the correct file as the PSE editor. The actual editor is hidden away inside the Support Files folder. The PSE file at the top level of the PSE folder in Applications is just an alias for the welcome screen and what you're describing is exactly what happens when you choose that. You want this one:

Sending photos to Lightroom over network - what works, what doesn't?

This weekend, my wife and I are helping with a photo shoot (member's photo directory for a local non-profit).
Here is what we've done in the past with Picasa and what we're trying to duplicate:
Photographer takes photos, which are saved onto his Windows laptop via Firewire in the studio.
SyncBack SE running on two networked Windows PCs make copies of the photos from the laptop onto the local hard drives.
Picasa automatically detected the newly-taken photos with its "Watch Folder" feature.
My wife and I do some cropping, adjusting, etc, so that the photos can be quickly reviewed and selected by the customer.
We exported the edited photos into folders in JPEG format.
The photographer takes the JPEGs and uses them to guide his re-edits of the raw photos with PhotoShop.
Ouch! Re-editing wastes a TON of time!
This time, we plan to use LightRoom; this will ensure that our cropping and editing will go right into PhotoShop easily (or so I'm told--I haven't USED LightRoom much yet!)
Big show-stopper: testing (by the photographer) caused duplicate photos in the LightRoom library, mitigated by a manual step or two to import as a work around some LightRoom quirks. And LightRoom doesn't really play nicely with network drives, or so it seems.
I think what we're aiming for is to have a "local catalog" in LightRoom, and have the photos stored in a network drive which it will "watch". That way, all we need to do is export our cropped/edited LightRoom catalogs, which the photographer can import into LightRoom, then it's a quick jump to PhotoShop.
... or is this not the tool for the job?

Per documentation Lr is not a network operation and per several posts in this forum is stated as such. I stopped using Picasa when Lr came out for the public. With PsCS5 another tool comes up as Bridge which I have not used. I have only read the basic Adobe description. Though I do know several Pro Photographers do use Bridge with multiple users even in different states. I do not see why you are editing jpegs for Proofs and as samples for a Photographer to re-edit in a different format, no matter which software you use. My workflow uses RAW files and an Import as DNG along with make a second copy to another folder in Lr and archive of RAW files after a double check of files and I only Export as jpeg after processing. But I only use 1 Lr Catalog and not a network solution.
My way of course is just my opinion of how my service works. Does anyone here also use Adobe Bridge?

S3/STR SUSPEND/RESUME -- What works, what doesn't?

So far I keep getting crashes when I resume the system from S3/STR standby
in W2K SP4.
I've got a MS-6702 K8T NEO-FSR, 1GB DDR SDRAM, and an
ATI Radeon PRO 128 with the beta Catalyst 4.9 drivers. I'm using 1.92B beta BIOS.
I get a "blue screen of death" crash STOP 0x0000000A in HAL.DLL every time
I resume the system after selecting Shutdown -> Standby.
I've seen some other threads with some people having no success in getting
S3/STR mode working, and others claiming that they have gotten it working
in Win XP SP2, though I don't have that yet.
I'll try it in Fedora Core 3 Test 1 LINUX soon and see if that crashes also.
But in the mean time, what's been everyone else's result?
What OS and BIOS / OS power control settings do you use if you have it working?
I've noticed another problem where "WAKE ON USB" even when that's selected
in the BIOS doesn't work since my USB bus including my
hub and keyboard / mouse deactivates when I choose SUSPEND,
and so wake up from it does not work at all...
Maybe this is a BIOS 1.92 bug or some more general problem, I can't say since
I can't use it much without risking corrupting my hard disc since the PC crashes
every time I resume it anyway (I had to plug in a PS/2 keyboard to resume it).

Just a little update on my successes with BIOS 1.92B / W2K SP4.
My apologies; some aforementioned problems were my error, not BIOS / W2K bugs.
There was a jumper option on the PRI/MASTER to select "MASTER" or "SLAVE"
so I had it jumpered for "MASTER". As it turns out if one reads the details of the
jumpering, the proper way to set it as a MASTER when there's no slave present
is to remove the jumper entirely from any position.
So now that I've set it up as "MASTER, NO SLAVE PRESENT" with the non-jumpering --
* the BIOS POST auto-detection is just as quick every time for all drives
* W2K SP4's "Turn off hard disks" time out and recovery now works fine.
* S1/POS SUSPEND mode works fine.
...however....
* S3/STR SUSPEND mode, however, still crashes on resume with STOP 0x0000000A.
I made another oversight -- in W2K Device manager if one Right clicks on
a keyboard / mouse device, selects "POWER MANAGEMENT" tab there's a check
box to select "Permit this device to wake up the system from suspend", and it
was not set for either the USB keyboard or USB mouse, even though
"USB WAKE UP" *was* set in the BIOS settings -- so one has to set USB WAKE UP
in multiple places (BIOS and Windows). Once I did that I was able to wake
up from S1/POS and S3/STR with a USB keyboard keypress, though the S3/STR
wake up still causes a crash for me for some other reason.
I'll leave the previous messages unedited just in case other people with similar
problems might find the thread and thereby find the solutions as I now relate them.

If I am going to upgrade to newer versions of OS to take advantage of MobileMe, can anyone tell me how many of my existing apps will cease to work?

BlueTooth Keyboard and Mouse on the Z10. What works what doesn't

With my D-Link using DLNA, my newly purchased BlueTooth Logitech Tablet Keyboard and Mouse; my Z10 and/or my PlayBook could very well become my media and comunications centre. There is little left for my PC to do.
Let me cut to the chase and my experience with my Bluetooth Keyboard and Bluetooth mouse on my Z10.
Logitech Tablet Keyboard
Pairing was no problem. Just type in the BT link code into the keyboard and hit enter.
Improvement(s) needed:
1. Backspace key - support press/hold delete instead of having to hit the backspace key multiple times to delete long string of characters.
2. Tab key - Support for tab through multiple fields (when available)
3. Support to program function keys to act as smart keys (as an option). This would be awesome!
Logitech v470 mouse
Pairing was easy. Passcode was 0000 entered via my BT keyboard, previously paired.
1. Swipe up/down does not work at bottom/top edge in portrait orientation. It DOES work when in landscape orientation.
2. Scrolling: Hit or miss. Does not work consistently.
3. Programmable buttons would be awesome. Being able to use the left/right scroll wheel toggle for app switching would be sweet!!
Overall, a great start!!

Hi, to change the time and/or date go into Settings, general, Date & Time. From here you have the option to "set automatically", if you turn this off a third option will appear where you can manually set the time and date. Hope this helps.

used in session mode Supported Hardware - National Instruments- NI-DAQmx
and if i understand the function startForeground correct is this a session mode function.
You can made some tests with a simulated 6321 or 6251, but if this also not works then you should contact
the mathworks to ask them how you should implement your functions with mathlab.

You have had good information here. I will not repeat that here.
I would like to add:
you have incompatible software: start in SafeMode, read Woodmeister and see if it is free of issues.
Akamai is crap software needed or not, Huawei the same.
It is very possible that the keygenerator you used for generating a key for some softwares has infected your mac.
The non-regular software with the false key(s) are not compatible probably or generate malware. Luckily you can not update them automatically because the keygenerator blocked the software for contacting the developer... I propose to consider getting rid of those softwares by really good uninstalling.
You have a beautiful mac, don't degenerate it with crapped software. There are alternatives for expensive software, for example Adobe Photoshop has a free alternative (with a less beautiful interface) in GIMP. And so on.
