Photoshop unexpectedly quits -- repeatedly, especially when lassoing

After opening Photoshop and working on a photo, if I lasso something, I get "Unexpectedly Quit" over and over. Often when I try to save work, I get Unexpectedly Quit." I can't work in Photoshop if I can't count on it. How can I fix this? Please help. Thank you.
Duncan
Mac Pro desktop, OS 10.4.11 Dual Core Intel Xeon processor, 4 GB memory, 4 internal hard drives for Final Cut (2 primary drives, 2 backups)

I searched for FAQs, but I can't find them. Can you tell me where to find them?
Also, I went back and checked my new user account and even though Photoshop doesn't crash with the lasso, it doesn't close properly when I try to close it in the new user mode. It freezes up. I tried repeatedly and each time, I had to use Force Quit. Does that shed any light on this problem?
Thanks.

  • Photoshop "Unexpectedly quit"

I'm running Photoshop CS - use it every day ... until last night. Now, when I try to launch it, I get a shutdown right after the flie browser pops up and the "Unexpectedly quit" error message.
When I reboot under either of my other two user names it runs fine.
I've restarted, rebuilt PRAM, even reinstalled PS, still the same thing.
    Any ideas?

    Thanks Joel,
I tried it. It didn't work.
Do you think it's possible that a single file I've worked on recently may have caused the problem?
    Jim
I don't know Jim. I searched and did see a lot of people when exactly the same situation. Everyone was asking about it but no one had any real solution. There was even more of the same as it related to Illustrator. Actually someone had a solution for it and they found it at The Adobe Forums.
Like I said it's obviously isolated to something particular with your one account. Since you've already reinstalled you might try searching for everything AdobeCS and trying to Trash it all. I know I installed the Beta of Photoshop 3 and it threw files and folders everywhere.

  • Photoshop unexpectedly quits on startup

Hi all, I am really hoping someone can give me some insight into this problem.
I installed the 10.4.5 update a few days ago, and just today went to open Photoshop CS and it wouldn't open. Just gave me the "unexpectedly quit" message. I chucked the preference files, and still nothing, so I reinstalled the entire Adobe Creative Suite, along with a few restarts and permissions repairs along the way.
I am running an 800 MHz Power PC G4 iMac.
If there's any more information I can give anyone for help, please let me know! I am at a total loss.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi,
Had the same problem for months (on PS CS2 and PS7). Tried absolutely everything and nothing worked - was completely losing hope. Finally, today I found the following forum item at Adobe (no support articles suggest this). Seems a simple "tilde" is the source of all the problems. I never thought it would work - BUT IT DID!!!

    Now, back to Photoshop work.

  • Finder Unexpectedly quit error message when rebuilding desktop in 9

When I try to rebuild the desktop, I am still getting the Finder Unexpectedly Quit error. This is happening with my iMac G3. I'm running OS 9.2.2 and 10.4.3. I followed all the directions in the Apple Help file here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2344
but it is not rebuilding the desktop at all. Every time I do I get that error message at startup even with extensions off. Is something wrong with my computer?

Nevermind. I figured out the solution. I ran Disk First Aid and it showed a lot of catalog problems so I just clicked Repair. When I tried to rebuild the desktop again, it worked. But if anyone else gets this error they can look at this thread.

  • My imovie is shutting down repeatedly-especially when clicking on transitions

When using imovie, it has been shutting down often-almost every few minutes of work I do.  It happens especially when clicking on transitions, or when dragging a transition up above.  I have tried deleting some of the preference files that I saw were suggested online.  Not sure what to try next.

No, you don't need anymore RAM, I simply asked because poorly installed or bad RAM can cause that error.
    I'd try this:
    Quit iMovie.
Locate a file named com.apple.iMovie.plist and get rid of it. iMovie will create a new one the next time it runs. Empty the trash and run a permissions repair from the Disk Utility folder.
    The files are located here:
    -->/Users/YourName**/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iMovie.plist

    Help

I don't know if you solved this issue yet. I started having the same issue after I installed the drivers and software for an Epson all in one printer and scanner. It only happened when I exited CS3, and on both my MacPro and MacBook Pro.
I isolated the offending item to the Twain driver for the scanner. In Library/Image Capture/TWAIN Data Sources was the driver for the scanner portion. I am using the printer attached through my Airport extreem, and thus don't use the scanner. I deleted the driver, and the issue is now gone. I finally noticed the scanner was showing up in my File/Import menu, and thats what made me drill into where the scanner drivers were.
Have you added anything like a scanner, or one of the new all in one printers. If so I would check out the drivers.
    Good luck.

  • Purchased Lion two weeks ago Photoshop unexpectedly quits when trying to print. Any ideas?

All suggestions are welcome - please help!

Our Office Manager was having this issue, not with printing, but with crashing in general. We finally did a clean install, installed PS (v CS5), and all the issues went away.
Did you install over the existing software, or did you do a fresh install?

  • Photoshop CC quits after starting, when used as a trial - works fine

    Hello,
I've purchased Photoshop and Lightroom bundle (combined deal for 12.99 Eur/Month), the problem is, whenever I try to run photoshop - it immediately quits after starting. Tried logging in and out of Creative Cloud with no luck. Reinstalling photoshop didn't help either. However, when I switched to another account and started photoshop as a trial it works fine (albeit for 30 days as of now). Lightroom (full version) and Bridge also works fine. Seems like the problem lies in Creative Cloud account and not in software. Anybody has any thoughts?

Windows 8.1 has given a few people problems regards video card drivers, but I wouldn't think that would cause a crash on launch.
So you have the Desktop Application Manager installed, and from there you installed Photoshop CC as a trial.  You used it in trial mode for a period of time, but have now paid for a sunscription?
How long did you go with the trial period before purchasing the subscription?
    Did the trial period expire?
Has Photoshop CC ever worked since you took out the subscription?
Have you done anything else like add fonts, or third party plugins, or a graphics tablet?
Just to make sure, check you definitely have the most up to date video card driver.  You might be able to use the auto checker (Iit needs Java installed)
    http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us
I don't think it will help, but again to be sure, reset Preferences (hold down **** Ctrl Alt while starting Photoshop)
After the above makes no difference, I guess you need to reinstall.
    Unistall Photoshop from Control Panel.
Download and run the Cleaner tool
    http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-suite/kb/cs5-cleaner-tool-installation-problems.html
    Restart your computer
Right click and run the Desktop Application manager as Administrator. (If it thinks Photoshop is still installed, Quit and sign back inagain.
    Install Photoshop.
If you have problems after that, come back.
    Good luck

  • Why does photoshop unexpectedly resize an image when i drag it to another canvas?

    Hello everyone.
I'm just having a simple problem that is not the worst or most crippling, but it is slightly annoying. For example, say I resize an image down to 245 pi X 300 pi. I then drag it from it's original canvas to another one (essentially I'm dragging and dropping). The sizing is not right? It is not the same 245  pi X 300 pi on the other canvas? Is that something I did and is there any way I can fix that because I like using templates that have specified pixel lengths and widths. So I keep having to make approximations which is really annoying.
Anyways, I hope there is some possible way you can help me. Thanks in advance

  • IPhoto unexpectedly quits (repeatedly) after restoring disk w/ SuperDuper

I am trying to use my backup hard drive that was created doing a full backup using Super Duper. However, when I logged in to OS X for the first time, all my iLife apps in my dock had odd icons (like normal folder icons). However, I could drag them off the dock and replace them w/ the ones in my Apps folder and they look fine now.
So, all my Apps work fine now, except for iPhoto. Everytime I open it, it immediately shuts down. I have repaired disk permissions... I even tried moving my iPhoto library somewhere else and creating a new / blank one and it still shuts down. I deleted my thumbnails cache... same thing. I think the problem is with iPhoto itself, not with my library, since it does the same thing w/ a new library. I have gone in and reset the permissions on my Pictures folder in my Home directory... nothing.
I'm at a loss. I can usually figure these kinds of things out. Any help would be appreciated.

    Jesse:
Try the quick fix of deleting the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, from your User/Library/Preferences folder. A damaged pref file can cause a multitude of problems with an application and crashing at launch is one of them.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Photoshop CS4 quits when saving

When I save a document, Photoshop unexpectantly quits. I'm running Mavericks on a late 2009 iMac. 8Gb of RAM. 300+Gb of hard drive available.
I've ran DiskWarrior, Apple's Disc Utilities, Restarted the iMac.
I've held-down Command, Option, Shift when starting Photoshop.
I've removed the Adobe Photoshop CS4 Prefs.psp file.
I've deleted third-party brushes and restored the default brushes.
Thinking it was font related, I used Suitcase Fusion and FontDoctor to find any corrupted fonts. It found some. I set those aside.
    Nothing has helped.
I've noticed when I close a Photoshop document after working in it, then choose Save from that dialog box, it saves my work and Photoshop doesn't unexpectedly quit.
I noticed in a Guest account on the computer, Photoshop seems to work fine (it doesn't unexpectedly quit when I save).
Does anybody have any other ideas?
    Thanks!
    Cameron

    Yes, it crashes.
The crash report is lengthy, so I've uploaded it to my website: http://trentstudios.com/cameron-crash-report.txt

  • InDesign unexpectedly quits when trying to create pdf

in Design and photoshop unexpectedly quit when i try to create a pdf from within the programs. what can i do to fix this? i can't even creat the pdf from acrobat because it says that the file type is either not supported or the file is damaged, but it shouldn't be. I can create a pdf from illustrator, but it is the only application i can do this from in the cs suite. please help!
    thank you!

I can't say I've come across that before, but it definitely sounds like some kind of problem interacting between Safari and Adobe...
What you may want to do is just right click the PDF links and select the save link as option, so that you can save the PDF directly to some spot on your computer, and then open them afterward. That way the PDF won't even try to load up inside Safari, and whatever unfriendliness there is between your PDF reader and Safari should be a non-issue.
