Photoshop using external disk as scratch disk without permission?

Hi, I'm having a problem whereby PS CS5 seems to be using my Time Machine disk ...
In the scratch disks pref pane only my local HDD is enabled.
But when I go to eject my Time Machine drive OS X says "Cannot eject, Photoshop is using this drive" or something to that effect.
It's a real hassle to quit photoshop, eject my drive, reload photoshop if I want to take my laptop across the room...

Nope, there's certainly no preferences or plugins on that disk.
Even if I turn on hidden file browsing I can't see anything like an adobe cache file on the disk either (although to be honest I'm not sure what that file name would be)
I wonder if it's something to do with Time Machine actually?
Anyway I'm shifting over to a new laptop with a fresh install of CS5 soon so I'll see if that fixes it

  • Is it possible to use iPod as external disk without installing iTunes?

I was wondering this because I would like to be able to use my iPod as an external hard drive at school. I cant install iTunes on their computers without administrator rights. I just want to know if I can connect it without having to go through iTunes to saftly disconnect.

Assuming you can use the iPod with iTunes at home, connect it to iTunes and change the setting to manual transfer. This automatically enables disk use.
Your iPod should then show up on any other computer as a hard disk without the need to install iTunes.
You can eject the iPod after use with the “safely remove hardware” icon in the system tray next to the clock (looks like a grey rectangle with a green arrow above it). Click on this then select your iPod. Or through Windows, select start/my computer, right click on the iPod, select eject.

  • Tiger Archive and Install Using External Disk for Archive?

Any way to do an archive and install by moving the saved stuff to an external usb drive? My 10.4.3 install disk is offering me only erase and install, I was updated to 10.4.8 and quite invested with software, etc., would really like to at least try archive and install, but of course the main drive is too full for that.
As an alternative, is there any way to use single user mode command line to locate and move files before doing the erase and install?
Finally, I gather I cannot boot os 9 with my mini. Is there any workaround for that?
    Thanks for any help.

    > One of the unexplained mysteries to me is what users are supposed to do about iTunes libraries?
Create and maintain a backup saved to an external drive or media (used for backup purposes only) as should be done with all other data that is important to you - for this very reason and for other important reasons. It isn't a matter of if but when your hard drive has a partial or complete failure since none last forever.
Since an iPod can be accessed/used via Disk mode as with any other external drive, many use their iPod for backup purposes which is a big mistake IMO since this isn't what an iPod is designed for. There are ways to retrieve music from an iPod but if you have your iPod preferences to automatically launch iTunes and update with iTunes and/or don't have Disk mode enabled, it makes it much more difficult if not impossible.
Do you have access to another Mac that supports being connected to another Mac via Firewire Target Disk mode? If so, you can connect your Mini to another Mac this way to retrieve your data and then you should probably consider reformatting the drive (which completely erases the drive) and then re-install Tiger and all software.

Since you don't say what resources and methods you've been attempting to get this matter resolved, it's difficult to offer suggestions. But if your credit card has been used without your permission, your primary recourse should be to your credit card company to report the unauthorized charges and have them issue you a new credit card. If your card has been compromised such as to make unauthorized charges on the iTunes Store, it's highly probably that it can be used elsewhere.
As to removing the card number from your iTunes Store account,  see:

You should be able to change or remove the card information there. If not, go here:

  • Time Machine server will not let me use external disks to share over network

    Hi Apple land,
Im running a lion server from a headless MacBook Pro, its running install and diagnostic netboot images well.
I have added an eSata card via the expresscard 34 slot.
drives connected to it work well, nice and fast.
Now, i can mark the drive for timemachine and it will change the icon and get ready for backup, no worries, for the local system only.
but going through server.app to make it a timemachine destination for others over the network give me an error:
"This disk drive may not support Time Machine backup over the network."
there is a link to this error, but it simply says make sure you dont remove the power to this drive as it could cause backups to fail.
It still lets me select the drive, shows 'writing time machine settings' but then the big switch flicks itself to OFF
I have searched and found the exact message posted in 2008 on this site, without resolution
so i guess i want to know, for lion server to have a drive available for others, does it have to be internal? or is it because its running through an expresscard then eSata thats confusing it?
would any of the terminal command tricks work (the ones that force compatability)
I didt want to breaking anything just in case
    thank you in advance.
    Richard

    Richard,
I am running a headless mac mini with Lion Server.  Same setup as yours, except externals are connected via USB.  I have no problems backing up our macbook pros over newtork via Time Machine.  My current backup drive is an old 500GB WD Book-whatever.  I have also successfully used a 2TB drive in a generic Rosewill JBOD external enclosure.  Both were freshly formated HFS+ (journaled) with GUID map prior to TM use.  Make sure you format journaled using GUID.
I also get the "This disk drive may not support Time Machine backup over the network." popup but after ignoring it am able to add the disk (don't bother following the information link in the popup...hello 2005!).
Not much help, but a note to say that it can be done and don't give up.
Of note...if you are successful and one day you suddenly can't mount the backup volume on your server, fire up the Terminal and disable then reenable journalling on the volume using diskutil.  The Disk Utility app will check the drive/volume and say it they are fine, but the volume won't mount until you play with the journaling.

  • Use external disk for cloning

    Hi all,
Is it possible to clone the EBS r12 using the USB external hard disk?
Due to insufficient disk space to do the preclone process, so I want to mount a external hard disk (thru USB) to do this preclone in the PROD server (both apps and db tier). After finish the preclone process on the PROD server, just mount this external hard disk to the target server and copy those data from PROD server that done with the proclone process.
    Is it possible?
    B. Rgds,
    Sunny

Is it possible to clone the EBS r12 using the USB external hard disk?It is possible as long as you would be satisfied with the performance.
Due to insufficient disk space to do the preclone process, The preclone process does not require that amount of storage, so this should not be an issue.
so I want to mount a external hard disk (thru USB) to do this preclone in the PROD server (both apps and db tier). After finish the preclone process on the PROD server, just mount this external hard disk to the target server and copy those data from PROD server that done with the proclone process.
Is it possible?Still not sure why you want to use an external drive to run preclone. If you mean to say it is just to copy the files from your production instance to this external drive and mount this disk to your target servers, then it is possible -- Please note that the performance would not be an expected when comparing this to an internal disk drive.
    Thanks,

  • Using external disk in bootcamp

I have a mac pro with mac os x 10.6.3 on first hard drive.
On the second hard drive I have bootcamp 3.1
If I use an external hard drive on bootcamp, can I backup Windows7 only?
Can't seem to find an answer anywhere about this.
    Thanks

    Hi and welcome to Discussions,
    yes you can.
You have to use Windows to prepare the external HD using NTFS as file system and MBR (Master Boot Record) as partition scheme.
Be aware that doing this deletes everything that is on that external HD right now.
Although Windows 7 comes with its own backup utility, you might wanna have a look at Casper http://www.fssdev.com/products/casper/ as a backup solution.

I have 2 Macbooks each with an account for me and one for my wife. I use one Macbook logged in with my account and my wife uses the other Macbook only logged in on her account. We both make regular time-machine back-ups each on a separate external disk. Is it possible to update her account on my macbook using her external disk without overwriting my stuff on the same Macbook and vice versa?

Time Machine does not do individual accounts. It records the complete drive. So if you were to use her TM backup on your Mac it would make your Mac just like hers. Both yours and her account on your MAC.
Just copy the missing files over from her Mac to yours. If there are differennt programs on each then they would need to be installed on both.

  • Late 2013 Macbook Pro Retina 15' will not boot an external disk from a Mid-2012 MAcbook Pro. What should I do?

In order to simplify moving all my files from the previous mid-2012 macbook pro 15' when moving to my new late-2013 macbook pro, i superdup-ed the full hard-disk to an external ssd. Unfortunatelly the new mac resuses to boot from this external disk (i get the grey disk with a line over it). The external disk works just fine so if I boot the new mac from its internal SSD I can read/write the external disk without problems.
Old OS X is 10.9 as is the OS on the new mac.
What I need to do is to boot the new mac from the external ssd, use the same superduper to copy the external content onto the internal ssd.
How can I solve this issue?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
If you made a backup of your files with SuperDuper, use Migration Assistant (in /Applications/Utilities) to transfer your files from the external drive > http://pondini.org/OSX/MigrateLion.html It will create a new user account with the transferred files, so you may want to merge both user accounts > https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-5472
The Late 2013 MacBook Pro uses a special OS X Mavericks version which makes OS X compatible with it, and older OS X versions do not work with it. That's the reason why you cannot start up from the external drive created from the Mid 2012 MacBook Pro

  • Macintosh HD is a volume within an external disk

Hi. Apologies in advance for the lack of detail here, but it's a post on behalf of a friend.
He has recently performed a Leopard erase and install, and is finding that when waking from sleep performance is extremely slow. When repairing permissions he noticed another disk listed in disk utility, and I suspect that this is the external usb disk that he had temporarily used for backup (and is now no longer connected). The really weird thing is that he says that his Macintosh HD seems to be a volume under the external disk.
He says that he left the external disk connected during the erase and install. Is there any way that he can have made the internal hd a volume of the external disk? Is does seem to make sense that the performance problems may be caused by leopard looking for a disk that is no longer there.
If this is what has happened, is another erase and install the only way to recover? He can't unmount the external disk, without deleting all volumes on it, including Macintosh HD.

    Hello Tom,
Macintosh HD seems to be a volume under the external disk.
If you open your Disk Utility and look at your Macintosh HD, it will appear as a volume underneath (indented from) the existing Hard Disk.
The name of that Hard Disk will be written. Have your friend do the same and then plug in the external usb disk. Is it the same name as his internal disk? No? Then this is not the culprit, and it would be rather bizarre if it was.
So if you could do a bit more checking and post more detail, we may find that there are other considerations to contemplate regarding his machine's slow performance.

  • Core i7 mbp will not boot from external disk

One upon a time, I tried to boot my new:
    Model Name:    MacBook Pro
      Model Identifier:    MacBookPro8,1
      Processor Name:    Intel Core i7
      Processor Speed:    2.7 GHz
      Number of Processors:    1
      Total Number of Cores:    2
L2 Cache (per Core):    256 KB
      L3 Cache:    4 MB
      Memory:    4 GB
      Boot ROM Version:    MBP81.0047.B0E
from a bootable Carbon Copy Cloner backup on my external FW800 drive.  (This, after I used Migration assistant to move the user over from My MacBookPro 5,1 core 2 duo machine.)
It didn't like it, booting from the CCC clone, that is.  There were problems with the boot of the new machine from that external disk and then problems with the boot from the internal disk.  I repaired disk permisssions and all seemed to be well booting from the internal disk for several months until I tried to boot from my SL 10.6 2Z691-6431-A CPU Drop-in DVD upgrade included with the initial purchase.  That didn't work.  I got the grey "restart your computer by holding down the power button" screen with a bunch of words and numbers in the background.  This also happened with the grey intsall disks that shipped with the machine with 10.5.7 on them.
Following this, the turning gear times are erratic, varying from 11 to 40 turns on boot up with an odd flicker happening for a fraction of a second during the turning gear screen.  From time to time I'll get some beach balling while the login is taking place and all of the icons are loading in.  After that, the machine functions fairly normally.
I know there's a problem though and I'm looking to resolve it with any advice the community can offer.
I have used DiskWarrior in the past but not for this machine which has not been used with this machine since it's incompatible.  I also have a full timecapsule backup. I also have a partition on an external drive with OS 10.6 on it.  Haven't tried to boot from it because I'm scared it'll mess things up worse.

I'm trying to boot my core i7 from any external disk without success getting only the grey restart screen.  The machine will neither boot from the 10.6 upgrade disk, nor the external firewire disk.
I'm not sure, but it seems that you're suggesting that I rebuild the OS as though it were a brand new machine without any of my s/w or data, and I cannot conceive of such a monumental task. If you mean that I should reinstall the OS, that would be fine, but I can't boot from a DVD, which is what prompted this query to begin with.
I would like to resolve the external disk boot failure.

  • My laptop has no disk drive, so how do I install Photoshop CS5 without using a external disk drive?

I've recently bought a laptop that does not have a disk drive. Is there any way to install Adobe Design Premium CS5 that I bought as a Disk last time without buying an external Disk drive?

You can copy the content of the DVD on your computer through pen drive then install the software, to copy the content on pen drive you need the computer which can read you DVD.
Or else , You can driectly download the setup on your computer from this link and use the serial number to serialize it;-

  • I want to set up the Time Machine and I would love to use the Time  Capsule but since I already have a wireless router I need suggestions on  what other external disks Apple could recommend to use with the Time Machine and  how to configure that disk

I want to set up the Time Machine and I would love to use the Time
Capsule but since I already have a wireless router I need suggestions on
    what other
external disks Apple could recommend to use with the Time Machine and
    how to configure that disk.
A complication that I need to resolve is the fact that I am using Vmware
Fusion to be able to use Windows on my Mac. Now it seems that Time
Machine is not backing up my files
on that virtual Windows without additional configuration and my question
is whether you can advise me here or whether this is only a matter for
    the Fusion virtual machine.

If you want to use Time Capsule you can.. you simply bridge it and plug it into the existing router.. wireless can be either turned off or used to reinforce the existing wireless.. eg use 5ghz in the TC which is much faster than your 2.4ghz.
You can also use a NAS.. many brands available but the top brands are synology, qnap and netgear readynas  series. These will all do Time Machine backups although how well always depends on Apple sticking to a standard. There are cheaper ones.. I bought a single disk zyxel which was rebadged and sold through my local supermarket. It actually works very well for TM at least on Snow Leopard. Major changes were made in Lion and again ML so do not instantly think it will work on later versions. I haven't tried it yet with those versions.
Any external drive can be plugged into the mac. Use the one with the fastest connection or cheapest price according to your budget. USB2 drives are cheap and plentiful. But no where near as fast as USB3 or FW800. So just pick whichever suits the ports on your Mac. Interesting Apple finally moved to USB3 on their latest computers.
TM should exclude the VM partition file.. it is useless backing it up from Mac OS side.. and will slow TM as it needs to backup that partition everyday for no purpose.. TM cannot see the files inside it to backup just the changes.
You need to backup windows from windows. Use MSbackup to external drive.. if you have pro or ultimate versions you can backup to network drive. But MSbackup is a dog.. at least until the latest version it cannot restore the partition without first loading windows. There are about a zillion backup software versions for windows.. look up reviews and buy one which works for you. I use a free one Macrium Reflect which does full disk backups and is easy to restore.. to do incremental backups though you have to pay for it.

  • Is it possible to store a back up on external HD by transfering files using Target Disk Mode?

    Dear Apple community,
There's absolutely no way that I'm going to be able to fix my MBP without a clean install. I simply cannot log in and get to my desktop screen after upgrading to Mavericks. So I will have to erase everything and perform a clean install. However, before proceeding with this plan, I'll have to back up my files from my MPB since I cannot use my mac normally, I'll have to back up my files using the Target Disk Mode. I've connected my MPB to another MPB in the past, so I know how the process work. But this time around I won't be able to use another MBP but a MB. I have a few doubts regarding the process especially in what concernd adding an external HD to this equation. So please bear with me and see if you can answer my doubts.
So this is the equipment I'll be working with: my MPB, my friends MacBook (2008) and my 1TB external hard drive.
My basic question is: once I connect my MPB in Target Disk Mode to the MB, I'm sure I'd be able to transfer my files to this MB. But let's say that I don't want to leave my files in this MB (after all it's not my computer) and want to send my files straight to an external HD connected to this MB. Is it possible?  If positive, I know that the only FireWire port in the MB is a 400 port. That means my MBP will be connect to the MB using the only FireWire port available in the MB. So I believe that my external HD would have to be connected to the MB with the help of an USB cable. I assume that this will make the transferring process a little slower than if I could count solely on FireWire ports. Slowing the process down is not a problem but could this corrupt any of my files during the transferring process or even damage anything? I assume that would never happen after all it's just digital data, but better safe than sorry, right? What do you think?
Another thought that occurred to me is: let's say I connect my MBP to the MB using the FireWire 400. I'd still have an FireWire 800 port available on my MBP. If I connect my external HD to my MBP (yeah, the one that will be in Target Disk Mode) using that FW 800 port, would my MBP allow this external HD to mount as if it was just another folder/drive in my computer? If positive, theoretically I'd be able to transfer files from my MBP to my external HD manually (by dragging files from folder to folders), right?
I really don't want to transfer my files from the MBP to the MB and then from MB to external HD. That would just take time and I really don't know how much available space I'll find on my friend's MB.
Oh, one last question: when transferring files using Target Disk Mode, do all computers involved in this process gotta have the same OS X version installed or it doesn't matter if e.g one is running Snow Leopard and the other Mavericks?
Looking forward to hear back from you, experts.
