Photoshop using too much memory, freezing computer

Over the past month Photoshop has become a nightmare to work with.
I am using CS6 because I have never been able to get CC to install. My computer specs:
Lenova Thinkpad
i7-3632 CPU with 16 Gb ram running Win 7 Pro x64. The graphics card is the Intel HD Graphics 4000.
I have used Photoshop since 1996, so am a seasoned user. These problems began about 1 month ago and I suspect may be related to the fact that one of the 2 CC memberships associated with my account was about to expire. (I wonder if there is something internal increasing checks of licensing given the upcoming and now passed expiration.) It also may be related to whatever underlying problem makes it impossible for me to update Photoshop CS6 or install Photoshop CC from the creative cloud. I have tried suggested solutions and short of uninstalling/reinstalling everything nothing has worked.
What I noticed first was that PS would take a long time to open, affecting other programs during the process. Music playing in iTunes would "skip" like an old record, with several pauses in the music while PS opened or saved a file.
When I checked the task manager, PS was almost 1Gb ram to view a single jpg. It seems like PS is not releasing memory when images are closed. For example, I just had 3 files open and closed all but a 56Kb jpb - yet PS is still using 1.142 Gb of ram. If I close PS and reopen those files, I see a more expected ram usage.
The problems are not consistent, which is odd. For example, opening PS will be okay one time and open in seconds, then it will take minutes another time and freeze my computer. (Which is why I suspected it may be connected to a CC license check routine.)
The biggest problem is that PS is also causing problems with other programs, esp. Microsoft office programs - that only occur when PS is running.
Does anyone have any idea of why this is suddenly a problem and what I can do to fix it? I am literally at the point of looking for and switching to another program if I can't get this fixed.
Thanks - Julie

Thank JJMack - that has helped me get closer to the problem.
I opened the resource monitor and you can see a screenshot of what is going on when I try to save a simple, 9 Kb graphic. (I'm saving an RGB JPG, not a PNG or animated GIF file. Doing anything complex / memory intensive than saving or simple edits in PS is almost impossible.)
As you can see from the screencap below, when I save (it doesn't make a difference if it is save vs. save to web or a network or local drive) Photoshop becomes unresponsive. (From past experiences, if I try to switch to a non-Adobe program it will also freeze and sometimes crash.) When PS becomes unresponsive, the NT Kernel & System immediately goes to the top of the list and uses 200+ threads.
From there Photoshop will typically be frozen for about a minute, then will recover and take another minute or two to finish the save. At that point PS is okay, but the rest of the computer is still frozen with CPU oscillating up to almost 100%.
As soon as the NT Kernel & System settles down, everything is back to normal again (as long as I haven't used other programs, which in one case required a hard reboot.)
It is pretty clear the problem is rooted in Adobe / Window 7 as I only have this problem with Adobe programs. (Illustrator isn't as bad, but I've had problems with it as well.)
The question is: How do I fix this, as it is killing my ability to work?
Thanks! Julie

  • Why does Firefox keep telling me that it is using too much memory, (eg: 235MB) and I should restart Firefox?

Lately Firefox has been popping up a warning while I am on the internet saying, that "Firefox" is using too much memory. It suggests shutting down Firefox and restarting Firefox. It also told me how much memory that is in use at that time. It is usually about 235MB or more. What is normal memory use for Firefox to use while I am on the internet? Does high usage mean that some other person is trying to get into my computer?

You appear to have AVG installed:
    *See --> http://forums.avg.com/ww-en/avg-forums?sec=thread&act=show&id=173969#post_173969
From reading on the internet, it appears that when there is a spike in memory usage, AVG "interprets" that as a memory leak, possibly caused by malware. AVG could be incorrect concerning that assumption. Maybe they are being a bit too conservative about memory usage; just my opinion.

  • OIM 11g using too much memory and not releasing it when shutting down

    Hello,
we have a problem with OIM 11g using too much memory (about 5gb) and it's not releasing it at shutdown (4gb still used).
We are using a VM with RedHat Linux 5.6. Originally we had 4gb RAM + 2gb swap file. We installed Admin Server, OAM, OIM and SOA on that machine but quickly realised we couldn't run all 4 programs at once in 6gb. AdminServer could run with 2 other products, but it was a tight fit in memory.
So we increased the RAM to 8gb (still 2gb swap file). But then our problem occured : I start the Admin Server (2.7gb total memory used), then OAM (4.6gb total memory used) and then OIM. After it started the server is now using 9.6gb of memory (~300mb of free memory) ! The problem gets even better : after I shut down everything (OIM, OAM, admin server) the "top" command show that there is still 4gb of memory used even tho nothing else is running on the server ! There is absolutely no other process (other than root stuff) running and no other users connected to the machine. After a reboot, it shows 400mb of memory used. I tried restarting the programs and it did the same thing.
Our intuition is that there might be a memory leak or some bug in OIM that might use up almost all the free memory and it's not releasing it upon shutdown. It might have been there before we increased the memory but have not noticed it since memory was already tight.
Anyone encountered the same problem ? Any idea ? Any suggestion to narrow down the problem ?
    Thank you

You can adjust the memory settings for WLS by editing the setSOADomainEnv.sh file that can be found in your /middleware/user_projects/domains/<domain>/bin/ folder. There is an argument called PORT_MEM_ARGS which is used to set your Java memory arguments. This way you can decrease/increase the amount of memory used by each managed server.
I usually type "ps -ef | grep oracle" to see what processes are running by the oracle user. This way the output doesn't get cluttered with root processes.

  • Every time I load my igoogle home page opening firefox, it opens it in two tabs instead of one, and then AVG tells me firefox is using too much memory and I should close and reopen it; Why

I open firefox using my igoogle home page and immediately it opens two igoogle tabs on top instead of just one how do I stop it from opening the second one? and then after about two minutes AVG tells me firefox is using too much memory slowing my machine and tells me to close and reopen fire fox...how do I fix that?

Make sure that Firefox closes properly and that that there are no longer Firefox or plugin-container processes left on the Processes tab in the Task Manager. Otherwise session restore will reopen the page(s) from the previous session.

Why does AVG keep telling me that Mozilla is using too much memory and I have to close and reopen the program?

the Advisor is just telling you the same thing you can see for yourself in the Task Manager; I can open firefox with only a few tabs and then watch the memory usage skyrocket when Firefox should be doing nothing - after a couple of hours it will get up to as high as 1.5GB before it completely hangs and I have to end the process in Task Manager, and this does this with all extensions disabled and in Safemode.

  • AVG says using too much memory because multiple firefox's are open but I only see one.

AVG scans regularly in background. Lately it has been showing a popup window that says multiple applications of Firefox are running and using too much memory so I should close some. But, I only can see 1. Tried CTRL ALT DEL to see if I could find answer, but only showed 1 firefox, and it was using over 28,000. So I think AVG is correct, but can't find out how to see what or where they are. They DO NOT show on the lower menu of the main screen, so I assume they are in the background. Don't have viruses, and Firefox regularly updates itself. What should I do to fix?

    Hi cmich80220-
It's true you should only be able to run one instance of Firefox at a time. I searched but was unable to find anyone else with a similar issue. If the problem gets back to Firefox running slowly, you might check out this article for troubleshooting:

For the past several versions of FF....I have posted here about it's 'behavior' under OS X.
The browser uses too much memory. After a short period of time, it becomes 'bloated', slow to respond, and requiring a 'force quit' to get out of it.
Being as I've posted about this before, for a previous version, and only received feedback from other Mac users experiencing the same thing, and not getting answers or help...I've stopped using it once more. It was a one day trial, and I didn't make it past 6 hours of use.
