Photoshop "won't let go" of image files

Just one example of a general issue: I'm in Windows (Vista) Explorer, in a folder filled with TIF files. I open one TIF file in Photoshop (CS3) ... do something to it, and resave. Then that image is CLOSED, so there's NOTHING open in Photoshop. Next, I try to rename (or move) that folder ... can't do it! Not until Photoshop is CLOSED. In other words, strictly in Windows terms, once a file has been saved AND CLOSED in Photoshop, the "path" to that file cannot be altered until Photoshop itself is closed.
There's gotta be a way around this, but I sure can't figure it out. Would be very grateful for anyone's help. Thanks!

Thanks, Chris, but I have only the slightest comprehension of what a "shell extension" is ... if your reply contains a solution to my situation, could you "dumb it down" just a little? And as I said to Curt ... if the best answer is, "Well, that's just the way it is ... it's a Windows problem," then presumably tens of thousands of people would be raisin' hell about this. Logically, there must be something else going on here.

  • My Lexar sd card won't let me put images onto it.

I got a Lexar SD card not long ago and it won't let me drag images onto it. Whenever I drag an image to the SD card window, a small no sign will appear by the file and I can't put it in.  I've looked around the internet and seemingly nobody has the same problem. Please help.

Click on the drive, choose Get Info from the File menu, and check the format.
If it's formatted as NTFS, reformat it as MS-DOS, exFAT, or Mac OS Extended (Journaled) as desired, or install software such as Paragon NTFS on the computer.
If it's formatted as FAT32 or exFAT, use the Disk Utility's Repair Disk command on it; this may also happen for a flash drive which is about to fail.
If it's formatted as Mac OS Extended, click Authenticate and provide your administrator password, or change the permissions on that specific folder in its Get Info window.

The jpg file is greyed out when I try to import. I've tried changing the import options to Jpeg file, all importable files, etc. Nothing will let me import.

  • Photoshop Elements Help | Processing camera raw image files

This question was posted in response to the following article: http://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop-elements/using/processing-camera-raw-image-files.html

    gegjr wrote:
When I selected "Save Image" there is an option to select the size of the JPEG preview. Is there anyway to extract the JPEG and does the JPEG contain the adjustments that were made to the Raw image?
The "Save image" command just saves (really converts) the original raw into another raw format : the DNG format created by Adobe to get a universal raw format instead of a specific raw format for each camera in the range of each camera manufacters... Using that feature is your choice.
And what you see in the bottom line : 8 bits or 16 bits has nothing to do with a preview, it is the choice of 'color depth' for the image the converters sends to the editor.
So, your choice is either :
    - to click 'Done' which saves the settings of your conversion (white balance, exposure, clarity...) to a very small 'sidecar' file of the xmp type
    - to 'Open' in the editor where you can work with all features of the editor (which include saving the output file in any format - jpeg - psd - tiff - png...

  • Bridge won't refresh to see image files on cards

    Bridge CS4. Win 7 Pro 64 bit
I put a card in the reader and Bridge sees the volume label but nothing else. No sub folders or image files either in the sub folders or at the root.
Pull the card out. It goes away in the folder list.
    Refresh--no help.
I have to shut down Bridge then restart it to see the card and it's contents-but ONLY if the card is in the reader when Bridge starts.
I can put the card in a different reader that's on a different USB channel and it's the same thing.
Windows Explorer will automatically refresh and see everything that's on the card. So the cards and readers are fine.
If I use Bridge's File| Get Photos from Camera import function, it sees the files just fine.
It's just that the Folder view is worthless. The ONLY way it will work is to have the card in the reader when Bridge starts.
So if I change cards, I have to shut Bridge down, swap cards, start Bridge up again. What a pain.
Is there anyway to get this thing to refresh?
    Yes, I tried F5.
I tried going to the top of folder structure and refresh.
It's just the folder view that will not update. It will not see ANY memory card that is placed into that reader until it is shut down and re-started while the card is in the reader. And it's the same problem, with different readers on different USB channels. It's definately a Bridge problem.
What's going on? Anyway to fix this.
    Thanks all.
    T.O.

    Good idea, but no dice.
I don't have it do that.
By the way, this is a clean fresh install of Win 7 Pro 64bit and Photoshop/Bridge CS4.
I built my own computers and am a fanatic about what gets installed and loads, so it's as clean as it can get with minimal junk running.
    Anyone else got any ideas.
Or, does anyone else have this problem?
Can anyone else pull cards (the same card)  in and out of the reader and Bridge does fine with seeing the images in the folder view?
    Thanks
    T.O.

  • Boot Camp won't let me partition because files cannot be moved

Hello, i just purchased Leopard so i could use windows (again) on my mac... after uninstalling it a long time ago back when i had Tiger and bootcamp beta.
anyway, the problem i'm having is the same as a few people: it won't let me partition my disk because some files cannot be moved, and that i need to format the disk to a single partition - Mac OSX (Journaled), even though it already IS.
most suggestions have been to erase and restore, or back up your computer on time machine... but the problem with that is i have a large amount of space being used on my external (for photos, movies, music), which would not otherwise fit on my HD, and as a result there is not enough room on my external to back up with Time Machine.
so what can i do to get Boot Camp Assistant to partition my disk so that i can install windows?

thanks for the advice - i finally managed to get it to work!
after a bunch of research i found out that it is in fact because the disk is fragmented that bootcamp assistant is unable to partition the disk (despite the many false claims that OSX does not need to be defragmented).
i didn't feel like paying for iDefrag and waiting to get it in the mail, so i downloaded the iDefrag demo and was able to see exactly where the fragments were (many of them were surprisingly mp3 files), and then i could manually delete their corresponding files to free up continuous space. (where before i couldn't even make a 5GB partition, i was able to finally make a 15GB partition after deleting about a dozen music files)
for anyone who wishes to try this, the way it works is that in order for the partition to be created, it requires a certain amount of free, CONTINUOUS space. Your computer says there is a certain amount of free space on it, but not all of it is continuous, in other words there are bits and pieces of stuff (fragments) littered throughout areas of "free" space.
When you run the iDefrag demo, there is a bar at the bottom with lots of colors which represents all the stuff on your HD. The free space refers to any area of white, and fragmented files are in red. The info bar will tell you exactly what file is being represented by the area of color when you click on it.
The idea is to find large areas of free space (white). If there are a few bands of non-red color in those areas it's OK, but you want to locate all the fragmented files (red) in those areas, find out what they are, search them in the finder and delete them (the info bar will tell you the file name, which will very likely be an mp3, as well as it's exact location on your computer). But be careful because if you don't know what you're deleting, you may screw up your computer.
If you buy iDefrag ($35.00), you can simply defragment and optimize your computer. This will take a long time (~5 hours), but you dont have to do any manual labor, and in the end your computer will be beautifully defragmented: all the free space will be clumped together in one big section of your hard drive and it will be completely continuous, so you can make a much larger partition (depending how much free space you have to begin with).

  • PLEASE HELP! Photoshop won't let me angle any of my brushes, it makes all of them round. How do I fix this?

So I ran into a bit of an issue a couple days ago. For whatever reason, photoshop will not let me angle any of my brushes, which a lot of them are (currently working on a digital painting portfolio), so it is a bit of a problem. I have tried going into shape dynamic and making adjustments, etc... I tried clearing my brushes and then putting them back on. No matter what brush set I use, the ones that should show up with an angle, instead are round. How can I fix this?

We have seen reports about a Community Toolbar extension causing this issue with not being able to open a new tab.
So you can check your extensions: Tools > Add-ons > Extensions

  • Mail won't let me drag images into Finder

Here's another one since I installed the updates from Mavericks.
Mail has stopped letting me drag images into Finder, which means that now I have to control click, Save Attachment..., then wade through all of my folders and directories, which is a nuisance! Why has it suddenly stopped allowing me to drag?
Again, only just started doing this today.
I have quit and restarted Mail - did not solve the problem.
    Thanks,
    Rory

Update: force quit and relaunched Finder - solved the issue.

  • IMovie isn't autosaving my events/movies and won't let me export the file. How can I ensure my projects aren't deleted if I can't manually save?

I created a movie w/ no theme and added my raw footage to it. I edited and was ready to export but wouldn't let me share the file. When I tried to export to a file, in the "Theater" view the progress bar stayed empty and there were no files created in the target folder.
I closed iMovie (since it should auto-save my work) to try again and when I re-opened iMovie (took a couple tries, as it froze the first time I opened it) there was no movie. No trace of any of the work I had done, other than the raw imported footage.
    Two questions:
    1) Why isn't iMovie autosaving the movie?
    2) Why wasn't I able to export it?

What exactly is the error you get?
How are you attempting this copy?
There's almost certainly a way to accomplish what you want to do (probably best from the terminal possibly copying the entire user dir and fixing up permissions, etc.) but I'm not sure you will end up with the results you want.  There are plists in the preferences dir that you probably don't want to copy over (e.g., many of the com.apple.* prefererences).  And many apps also create more than just plists.  There may be stuff in Application Support, LaunchAgents, Internet Plug-Ins, etc.).  And this would be stuff you do want to copy.  Bottom line is it is not a trivial exercise which is probably why the system is slapping your hands for even attempting it

  • Photoshop won't save Metadata from opened file!?

I have a somewhat strange workflow when it comes to using Lightroom so I'll try to explain it in order to make this as easy to understand.
I use Image Ingester to import my images on to a computer and then I rate them and tag them in Bridge.  I then use ACR to convert them to DNG files and place them in a new folder (buckets from the DAM book).  After that they get imported in to the proper catalog in Lightroom.  I then find the images that I want and export them as originals to a derivatives hard drive.  I work on the images in Photoshop, save them as a PSD in a derivative 'bucket' and then re-import them to Lightroom so they can be exported in a batch.  When I export them from Lightroom to the derivative hard drive as a DNG or Original (same thing in this case) it retains its metadata that has been added.  But as soon as I save it in Photoshop as a PSD it loses its metadata.  I don't understand why this is happening.
I hope there is an easy fix for this.
    Cheers,
    Matthew

    Hi,
Did you solve your save problem? I am having the exact problem suddenly. Never happened before and now can't solve it. Did a repair permissions after upgrade to iphoto 06; but can't save anything to desktop after bringing any photo from iphoto to photoshop. The same error is coming up
"Could not complete your request because of a program error"
Folks at Photoshop said it is definately an iphoto permissions problem, not photoshop.
If you figured it out, I'd sure appreciate your solution.

  • Photoshop won't save/overwrite an image

This is with Photoshop CS5.1.  It goes through the process as usual, I save it, it asks if I want to overwrite the prior one, I say yes -- but when I go to upload the new image -- it hasn't changed!  This just started happening last couple days -- what is the problem here, anyone know, anyone deal with this before??
    Very inconvenient!!  Thanks!

I just came across this thread from a google search.
I have started to have this exact same issue recently.  I think it may have started with the 10.8 server upgrade.  I am seeing the issue from both a MacPro running 10.7 and a MacBook Air running 10.8.  Both are runing CS5/PS 12.0.4.  That has't changed in a while (both of these systems were working as normal with the same file server previously).  What has changed is the server was recently upgraded to 10.8 (and now 10.8.1)--not sure if this is the issue because I can't pinpoint this issue starting exactly when this update occured.
The difficult thing about this problem is that it doesn't manifest on directories that were created prior to this issue starting for me.  When I create a new directory, then I start having this issue (where I can't overwrite an existing file).  This is a MAJOR PAIN IN THE BUTT because the once-awesome ability to click on the file you want to replace and have its name picked up in the Save for Web dialog and THEN OVERWRITE THE FILE is gone.  What's worse, there is no fail notice, so you think it is working as before, but after checking mod date on the file it is clear it is not updating/overwriting.
I've done a check of file permisssions and even attempted to get permissions identical for all files in two dirs, one which allows overwrite and one which doesn't, to no avail.
I was having a sorta similar issue with Coda 2 saving/overwriting files to newer directories...also seems to have cropped up in same timeframe.
I will check the sys logs on my various systems and see if anything is getting logged...would love to get this issue fixed, its a major time waster to have to delete the file before writing a new one with same name.
UPDATE: nothing found in the logs, but I wasn't able to turn on AFP access logging on the server by following apple's instructions.  After some further testing, I am seeing the modification date of the directory where the target overwrite file is gets updated, but the file is not written.
