Photoshop won't start . . . Help!!!

I just bought a 24" iMac with a 2.8 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor with 4 GB of RAM. I used the migration assistant to transfer all of my programs from my old (very old) 800 MHz iMac. Everything works fine except for Photoshop 7.0 and Image Ready. I try to start Photoshop and the logo screen comes up and it doesn't get any further than "Reading preferences..." and I get "An unexpected and unrecoverable problem has occurred because of a program error. Photoshop will now exit."
I have tried deleting the preferences, didn't help. I tried repairing permissions, didn't help. I tried reinstalling from the disk, didn't help. I tried reinstalling in Safe Mode, didn't help. I am partially cross-eyed from scouring the web trying to find ANYTHING that remotely resembles my problem, to no avail. Can anyone help me out?? PLEASE!!!

I've made an attempt to contact my guy and am waiting to hear back. He's a decent guy who I have dealt with pretty extensively through my last employer. Not to mention he's pretty close distance wise.
By midday tomorrow I'll contact your guy either way. I appreciate your going out of your way for me and making that call. I still have to be frugal and do a bit of shopping around before I pull the trigger. I hope you can understand.

  • All of a sudden Photoshop won't start [on a Macbook Air]

    Dear all,
I'm on a MacBook Air with OS X 10.10.2, and I use Photoshop about once a month, but now I really need it, and it won't start:
    - Immediately after I click on the Photoshop icon I get "Adobe Photoshop CS5.1 cannot be opened because of a problem." And when I click on the "Report..." button I get a very technical message (see below).
    - I've used Photoshop on this machine for about a year with no problem, but recently I had a problem and needed to restore from my TimeMachine backup.
    - I don't know if the problem occurred immediately after the restore or not.
    - I've read innumerable threads on various forums, but nothing describes my problem exactly. I suspect a problem with my paths and permissions (since I read a report that restoring from a TimeMachine causes such problems occasionally), but I don't know which path is corrupted/missing/unreadable.
    - I've tried creating a new admin account and starting Photoshop from there. It didn't work.
    - I don't mind reinstalling, but I don't have an installer image. I started with Photoshop 6, then updated to CS2, CS4 and eventually CS5. I do have all the serial numbers but not all update-images.
I would appreciate any hints on how to further diagnose and some the problem.
    Thanks a lot in advance!

Did tou try resetting the preferences usins the Photoshop keys as your tryind to start Photoshop.  Toy cab also use Windows explored or Mac finder deleteor rename you userid Photoshop preferende if you change you OS preferences to be able to see hiddeb files and folders. Restore preference files to default
In this video, learn the two methods of resetting your preference files back to default: Manual preference file removal and Keyboard Shortcut method (starts at 5:05)
    by Julieanne Kost
To restore preferences quickly using a keyboard short cut:
Press and hold Alt+Control+Shift (Windows) or Option+Command+Shift (Mac OS) as you start Photoshop. You are prompted to delete the current settings. The new preferences files are created the next time you start Photoshop.
Note: Using the keyboard shortcut, preference files for custom shortcuts, workspaces, and color setings will also be reset to default.

  • Intel iMac won't start - HELP!

My iMac won't start this morning. I get the white screen with the grey apple,
and the swirling progress thing, then after a few seconds I can hear
the sound you hear when the system shuts down. like a soft switch
going off, then it just continues swirling, still with the white
screen and grey apple, then it restarts by itself. Then we go through
the same routine. Tried booting up by holding C with the Leopard disc inside but nothing happens.I have just reinstalled Leopard as Snow Leopard left too many printers and programs lifeless, so I did an erase and install a few days ago. Since then I have used the Mac fine, switched down normally last night, but this morning it doesn't want to play.
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks in anticipation

Have you reset PRAM and SMC?
    Do this first
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
and then do this, if the PRAM does not help
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1543
The second one is basically disconnecting your iMac from power (and all cables), then reconnecting following a precise procedure.
If that does not help, I would restart with the Snow Leopard installation disc (insert disc and start up with the C key held down). You probably did an installation of Snow Leopard over your existing Leopard system the first time. This time, erase it completely first, then install Snow Leopard. I assume you backed up your data already.
When you get to the Installer screen (after selecting language), go up to the menu bar. Under Utilities, select to run Disk Utility. In the sidebar, select the internal DRIVE, not the volume indented under the drive. Go to the Erase tab. Name the volume +Macintosh HD+ and set the format to +Mac OS Extended (Journaled)+. Erase the drive. Since you have the drive selected in the sidebar (not the volume), it will also re-partition the drive.
It should take less than on minute to complete the process. Quit Disk Utility to go back to Installer. Run the standard installation onto the blank internal drive. Hopefully, a fresh Snow Leopard install on a reformatted/re-partitioned drive will work better for you.

  • EMac won't start, help please

I am having two problems with my eMac. The first, much more pressing, problem is that it won't start. I was having problems installing the newest version of quicktime, so on the quicktime forums I read to Repair Permissions in the Disk Utility, so I did this, and everything seemed to go well, but when I restarted my computer, it would not load. It is stuck on a light grey screen with a dark grey apple logo in the middle. My keyboard won't repond to the point where i can't even open the disk drive. My second, much less urgent problem is that my disk drive doesn't recoginize any cd's, even ones that I have used with this computer before. this problem really means nothing at this point, since my computer won't start anyways.
If anyone could help me, it would be greatly appreciated.

Yes, I tied all of the suggestions for my problem.
You see a blank, gray screen
    1. Make sure the latest firmware for your computer is installed. Check Apple Downloads for the latest versions. (Yes, it is installed)
    2. Disconnect all peripheral devices, except for the Apple keyboard and mouse. This includes ADB, serial, USB, FireWire, SCSI, and PCMCIA devices. If this resolves the issue, connect one device at a time, restarting after each one, until you've determined which device is causing the issue. (All are disconnected)
    3. Remove third-party hardware upgrades such as memory (RAM), microprocessor upgrade cards, and PCI cards. If this resolves the issue, add back one item at a time, restarting after each one, to isolate the issue. Note: Apple does not provide technical support for Mac OS X when used with third-party microprocessor upgrade cards. (Don't even have any third-party hardware upgrades)
    4. Start up from your Mac OS X installation disc and check the hard disk with Disk Utility or, if necessary, fsck. (CD-drive will not even open, so can't do this)
    5. If you are comfortable doing so, reset your computer's Power Management Unit. Specific directions are available elsewhere in the Knowledge Base. (Can't find how to do this on the anywhere)
    6. Additional tips may be available in this document. (Document also had nothing that worker)
I will be buying a macbook regardless after my income tax comes in, so I don't deem the computer as worthy of spending any money to fix, but this was a pretty expensive machine to just discard, so I would like to try to get it running again.

You may be missing a driver for your motherboard/ core3i processor or your harddrive/ SATA. Check your Device Manager for devices marked as problematic/ not working and install the necessary drivers. and don't get me wrong, but it really would be smart to install Win 7/ Win 8. You are crippling yourself in every way imaginable by hanging on to XP. You won't see any 3D features even if PS installs for instance...

  • CS5 - Photoshop won't start:  preferences file  was invalid (it has been deleted)

    Environment:
    Win7 Ultimate - 4 gig ram - CS5 Design Premium
Seemingly out of the blue - Photoshop stopped loading and I'm getting two error messages :
first:           ADOBE PHOTOSHOP CS5 Extended:  "Could not load actions because an unexpected end-of-file was encountered
second:     ADOBE PHOTOSHOP CS5 Extended:  "could not initialize Photoshop because the preferences file was invalid (it has been deleted).
I've deleted the two Preferences Files - but they don't seem to repopulate on startup - (or if they do they are deleted per the error message)
I tried copying a Preferences file from another working machine but that failed as well.
In addition: Dreamweaver is kicking out the following error messages - but opens and seems to work normally.
The following JavaScript error(s) occurred:  Unable to open script file C:\Program Files (x86) Adobe\Adobe Dreamweaver CS5\Configuration\Shared\Spry\Designtime\EditingUtils.js (error 2).
The following JavaScript error(s) occurred:  Unable to open script file "C:\Program Files (x86) \Adobe\Adobe dreamweaver CS5\Configuration\Shared\Common\Scripts\dwscripts.js" (error 2).
I'm in the middle of a big project and need to get back up quickly - any help would be much appreciated.
    Thx.

Run photoshop as administrator holding Ctrl + Alt + Shift, that should trigger a preferences reset prompt.
If that won't work I would do a backup and delete the entire Adobe Photoshop CS5 Settings folder, not just the two files you mentioned.
As for your Dreamweaver issue, try deleting WinFileCache-********.dat (or FileCache.dat) from your Dreamweaver Config folder.
    Otherwise try deleting your preferences
    Exit Dreamweaver.
In Windows Explorer, navigate to C:\Users\Your User Name\AppData\Roaming\Adobe.
    Rename the Dreamweaver preferences folder:
Dreamweaver CS5: Rename the Dreamweaver CS5 folder to, for example, Old Dreamweaver CS5.
Choose Start, type regedit in the Start Search, and then press Enter.
In the left pane of the Registry Editor, navigate to the following key:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Adobe
Remove the Dreamweaver preferences registry entries.

  • I book won't start- help requested ASAP

I have had my Ibook for about 3 years now. Today I was burning a disk in the Itunes applicatoin as well as searching the internet. When the disk had 2 tracks to burn left, my computer shut down. Since then, I have been unable to restart it. I have tried to press the power( ON) button many times, but it will not restart. The 7th and 8th time I tried to restart it, it made a slight clicking noise. What can I do? I need to use my computer ASAP for homework and debate work. Please help.

  • Lightroom won't start-Help

I am running Lightroom 2.5 on a Windows Vista System. I have been using Lightroom since version 1.0. My Lightroom has suddenly quit working, When I start I either get a message that Lightroom has stopped working and must be shut down or it dims and says not responding. I have left it in not responding mode for 5 hours with no luck. I have tried loading other catalogs and even creating a new catalog and I get the same results. What I see when it goes to Not Responding is strange. Customizations that I have made are not shown. The folders listed do not seem to be the folders that should be shown for the catalog and I sometimes get a screen asking me to set program update options. What has happened and what can I do? Help

I have tried creating a new catalog. Same result.
The message I get says: Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 64-bit has stopped working
A problem caused the program to stop working correctly.
Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available.
Everything else seems to be working normally.

  • Brand new imac won't start HELP!!

Just got an iMac, fresh out of the box I hit the power button, everything looks normal, OS X does its normal checks, then the desktop comes up with multicolour stripes - the desktop is cluttered with all kinds of files - a darwin console opens up then an application called Phoenix starts does a few things that were too quick and then just says PAUSED in an orange box at the top and nothing else.
I have a bluetooth mouse and keyboard so I can't actually control the thing in any way either.
It also looks like OS X 10.5 has not been pre-installed.
Please can someone help me with a suggestions as to what I can do.
(I am an experienced Mac User having used them since the original SE - I've never experienced something like this before)
    Thanks

it sounds like the iBook went to sleep during the transfer or at least it's hard drive spun down.
what you need to know is hope that simply booting from your install DVD will let you repair the iMac's hard drive. You could also try booting holding down the Command S keys on startup and when you get to the Single User Mode command line prompt follow the directions there for running fsck to repair your hard drive.
Do you have a FW hard drive? Can you copy files from iBook to FW and then from there to iMac?
And, it is always nice to have a FW emergency/backup hard drive. The iMac needs a different partition scheme to be bootable from FW than the iBook does, but you can create the proper partition type etc from a Tiger Installer and put OS X on FireWire, then see if you can backup and repair your iMac's hard drive.
MicroMat's TechTool Pro 4.5.1 is now shipping and is compatible, Universal Binary and bootable. Always good to have some 3rd party utility handy.
If you are just starting out, you probably don't have much if anything installed yet, so you may want to just erase your iMac drive and restore to what it was. That would be the easiest if Disk Utility won't repair it.
Instead of powering off the iBook, I would have tried to force quit whatever was running, like Migration Assistant.
