Photosmart 5520 - Black not printing on some things

My 5520 has been fitted with new cartridges and all work except the black.  Strangely, black (or at least grey) writing prints on the quality/print report and the cartridge shows as full when this is checked by the on screen request.  However, the print report has a completely blank rectangle under the 'black' heading.  I have followed all the usual steps but I am confused as to why I get black printing but no black on pictures.

HI , Welcome to the HP Support Forums! I understand that you're unable to print black on your HP Photosmart 5520 e-All-in-One Printer. I will certainly do my best to help you. I would try the steps within this guide, Printer Prints a Blank Page or Does Not Print Black or Color Ink for the HP Photosmart 5520 and Deskjet Ink Advantage 5520 e-All-in-One Printer Series.  Solution one: Use genuine HP ink cartridges HP recommends that you use genuine HP ink cartridges. HP cannot guarantee the quality or reliability of non-HP ink cartridges or refilled HP ink cartridges. If you do not use genuine HP ink cartridges, the steps in this document might not resolve print quality issues.Visit HP SureSupply to check ink cartridge compatibility or purchase replacement ink cartridges.Go to the HP SureSupply website.Scroll to the bottom of the page, and then make sure the country/region location is correct.Follow the on-screen instructions to order new ink cartridges or check ink cartridge compatibility with your printer.Genuine HP ink cartridges can also be purchased from other retailers. Solution two: Check the estimated ink levels, and then replace any low or empty ink cartridgesLow ink can contribute to poor print quality. Follow these steps to check the estimated ink levels, and then replace any low or empty ink cartridges. Step 1: Check the estimated ink levelsFollow these steps to check the estimated ink levels. From the home screen of the printer control panel, touch the Ink icon (). The current ink levels display.Figure : Example of estimated ink levels NOTE: Ink level warnings and indicators provide estimates for planning purposes only. When an indicator shows low-ink levels, consider having a replacement ink cartridge available to avoid possible printing delays. You do not need to replace ink cartridges until print quality becomes unacceptable. If none of the cartridges are low on ink, you do not need to replace them yet. Continue to the next solution. If any of the cartridges are low on ink, continue to the next step to replace them.Step 2: Replace any low or empty ink cartridgesFollow these steps to replace any low or empty ink cartridges.Video of replacing the ink cartridges The following video demonstrates how to replace a cartridge.  If you have trouble viewing the video or to view the video in a different size, click here to play the video on YouTube. If the product is off, press the Power button () to turn on the product. Otherwise, ink might leak from the cartridge. When you remove the plastic wrap, the paper label on the top of the cartridge tears slightly, which is necessary to vent the cartridge.Remove the orange cap from the cartridge. Twist the cap counter-clockwise until it snaps off.Figure : Remove the orange cap from the cartridgeWith the nozzle and the contacts facing down, push the cartridge into its slot. Press down on the cartridge until it is firmly seated. Make sure that the color icon on the cartridge label matches the color icon on the slot.Figure : Insert the cartridgeRepeat these steps to insert the other cartridges.Close the cartridge access door.Figure : Close the cartridge access doorStep 3: Align the printer Follow these steps to align the printer using the control panel. From the home screen, touch the Setup icon (), and then touch Tools.Touch the Down Arrow (), and then touch Align Printer. Run your finger along the top of the cartridges to feel for any that are protruding, and if any are, press down firmly until each cartridge snaps into place.Close the cartridge access door.Figure : Close the cartridge access doorTry the print job again.Solution four: Clean the printheadFollow these steps to use an automated tool to clean the printhead.Make sure that plain white U.S. letter or A4 size paper is loaded in the tray. From the control panel home screen, touch the Settings icon (), and then touch Tools.Touch the Down Arrow (), and then touch Clean Printhead. The product cleans the printheads, and then prints a test page.Review the print quality on the test page.Figure : Example of the printhead cleaning test pageIf the print quality on the test page is satisfactory, return to the current print job.If the print quality on the test page is unsatisfactory, perform a secondary cleaning of the printhead. If the printhead is badly clogged, it might require another cleaning cycle. If so, wait 30 minutes after the last cleaning stage to start the first stage of the cleaning process over again. NOTE:  Never turn off the printer when ink cartridges are missing. Make sure that you replace any missing ink cartridges as soon as possible to avoid print quality issues and possible extra ink usage or damage to the ink system. To avoid issues that require cleaning the printhead, always turn the printer off with the Power button on the printer itself.Solution five: Service the printer Contacting HP for service in all countries/regions except Asia Pacific. If you completed all the preceding steps and your product still has an issue, service the product.First, go to Check your product warranty to check your printer warranty status, and then go to Contact HP Support to find an authorized service dealer or to schedule a repair.Repair fees might apply for out-of-warranty printers. NOTE: Keep a print sample that shows the problem. If the ink cartridges, printhead, or printer is replaced under warranty, the support agent will request the print sample. If the printer is returned to HP, the print sample must be returned with the printer. Place the sample in the output tray when you package your printer for shipping. What you can do, is use the following link to create yourself a case number, then call and it may help speed up the call process:
Step 1. Open link: www.hp.com/contacthp/
Step 2. Enter Product number or select to auto detect
Step 3. Scroll down to "Still need help? Complete the form to select your
contact options"
Step 4. Scroll down and click on: HP contact options - click on Get phone
number
Case number and phone number appear. I hope this helps. Good Luck!

  • Photosmart 6510 black not printing

This morning I was able to print full-colour docs including black. After the first few prints, they became steadily fainter until nothing appeared. I checked the ink levels in the software and they were all marked as spent, so I went out and bought a 4-pack of HP inks. I installed them in the printer as indicated (wrapping off, orange whatnot off), tried test prints. Colours fine, no black. I ran a printhead clean from software, both an initial then a deeper clean. Printouts showed colour but no black. The control software shows all ink cartridges to be full. Printhead health is good. I turned it off and turned it on again. I cleaned the cartridge vent as advised in various threads. All with no effect - black doesn't print, despite a fresh new cartridge and the control software reporting the reservoir as full. If anyone on here has any ideas as to why this is the case then I'm all ears. If not, then I can only assume: a) the cartridge is knackered. As I've taken it out of its wrapping then I'll not be able to take it back to the shop.b) the printer is knackered, in which case it'll have to go to the skip as it's out of warranty. I've looked at the following forum threads: http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Ink-Toner-Cartridge-Printhead-Issues/Black-not-printing/m-p/2926025http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Ink-Toner-Cartridge-Printhead-Issues/Photosmart-6515-doesn-t-print-black-ink-after-installing-new/td-p/2637505 and of course Googled. This problem has already cost me 3 hours and counting, so if it takes any longer then it would be cheaper for me to go out and buy a new (non-HP) printer.

  • Photosmart 5520 AIO not printing

The printer belongs to my daughter.  I just found out that she ran out of ink 3 or 4 months ago and put the printer in the closet.  I received it over the weekend, bought new HP cartridges and am trying to get it to print.
The black won't print at all.   The blue is very blurry, as is the yellow.  The red seems to be ok.  My guess is that whatever ink remained in the cartridges dried out and won't let the fresh ink through.  I have run the "Clean Printhead" a number of times and not solved the problem.  I have looked through many posts and do not find a similar one.
    Does anyone have any ideas/suggestions?

  • HP photosmart 5520 my new printer on photo printing keeps stating out of paper

my new HP photosmart 5520 will not print photos. It keeps flashing "out of paper, reload" when the printer is already loaded with paper single and several sheets. Is this a faulty machine that I bought or can it be rectified. I never had this problem with my previous Kodak printer. Could you please advise what can be done to remedy this or should I purchase another make of printer. Thanks Michael

    Hello shuter1,
Welcome to the HP Support Forums!
I see you are having photo printing issues with the Photosmart 5520, it will not feed the paper. Will the printer print on regular 8.5x11 paper?
What is the paper type and size you are trying to print these photos on?
See if following the steps outlined in this guide will help: Printing Photos Saved on Your Computer or Memory Card.
I will look back for your reply.

  • HP Photosmart B210a will not print black ink on plain paper... only on photo paper.

Hi, I have an HP Photosmart B210a that wont print black ink.  I have used a whole set of ink cartridges by cleaning the print heads, allignment etc.  I just installed ALL NEW cartridges and the sae thing is ocurring. I have replaced plenty of cartridges and am experienced.  Just all of a sudden one day the printer stopped printing black ink on plain paper documents like with MS Word, excel and PDF, etc.  It's not set to greyscale either, actually it wont even print grey!  However, if I go to a photo with plenty of black in it, it will print it JUST FINE!!!  I'm at my wits end! I have followed EVERY head cleaning advice in the forums but it will not print black in except on photos... Please help!!!!

The document here may help, although you have likley already done most of the steps.  Be sure to check the vents.  If the above does not resolve black not printing on your Photosmart b210a the post here may help.
The black cartridge uses pigmented ink which is not compatible with photo paper.  Although the printer appears to be printing black properly on photo paper it is actually using color mixed together to produce black in this case.

  • HP Photosmart 5510 will not print Black Ink!! - Time to "break-up" with HP

I came upon this forum by doing a google search for the issue I'm having which is my HP Photosmart 5510 will not print black ink. The printer is a year and a half old and is used only for home office use (not a heck of a lot of printing being done)
It started right after I installed new ink cartridges (all four of them) I want to mention hear that I ONLY buy genuine HP ink cartridges from Staples and when I replace my cartriges I replace all four at the same time even if one ink level is not considered "replaceably" low. When the issue started I thought I must have gotten a bad black cartridge so I went out and bought another one but was still having the issue. So that's when I did my google search.
I tried all the suggestions (several times) on this post (which did not reslove the problem) : http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Printing-Issues-Troubleshooting/HP-Photosmart-5510-will-not-print/m-p/1...
and I tried a "Hard Reset" as suggested here (again did not resolve the problem) :  http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Ink-Toner-Cartridge-Printhead-Issues/Photosmart-5510-Will-not-print-in-...
After trying all of these my color ink is less than half full....remember....I started with 4 brand new ink cartridges...so now, I'm out roughly $85 in ink just trying to resolve a problem that should not have happened in the first place!! Shame on HP for makeing such poor quality products. I gave up on HP computers years ago and now I'm giving up on their printers!! This HP Photosmart 5510 All In One printer replaced an HP Color Laserjet CM1312nfi printer (which cost approximately $400) that only lasted about 3 years. Sorry HP but that's it....I'm moving on! Consider this our "break-up" letter.

Hi TisKate, sorry to hear that you are having printing issues when it comes to printing in Black. I am also sorry to hear that you are breaking up with HP. I would like to offer a couple more troubleshooting steps before we say our fond farewells. Now this might sound silly but really it isn't. If you have the power cable connected to a Power bar/strip, please remove it and connect the power cable directly to a wall outlet. HP printers already have a built in surge protector and if you have it in a strip/bar, the printer will not get all the power needed to function properly. This can cause printing issues or false error messages on the printer display screen. Here is a document that explains the Issues when Connected to an Uninterruptible Power Supply/Power Strip/Surge Protector.
The other step I would like to take is on the printers display touch screen. Please use the right arrow key and go to the Wrench icon. Press the wrench and go to the Tools menu. Once in the Tools menu, please select Clean Printhead. Use the cleaning utility 2-3 times or until you see a change in the print status reports. It might take a few cycles but I am confident that it will make a difference.
I hope you and HP can still be friends( friendly humor).
    Thanks for your time.

hp photosmart 5515 will not print black, but will print colors (cyan blue yellow). Printer shows full inks on all colors.

No solution. Power cycled several times, power cycled computers, modem, router, performed all recommended cleanings, changed all ink cartridges, checked it over several days - no go. Then, suddenly, after weeks, it started printing again. That's one hell of a gremlin. Throughout all of this time, my inexpensive Canon printer never faltered.

  • Black not printing

Recently printer has stopped printing black.  It was almost out of black ink so I changed the black cartridge.  I had already changed the color cartridges within the past couple of weeks.  I have changed them many times and never had this happen.  Color works fine.  However most things I print are black and white (not color).  I did change it to another new black cartridge but that didn't help either so I know it was not the cartridge and that it was correctly installed.
Could this also have something to do with using the printer wirelessly when I moved my laptop around the house and do not have it connected?  Since I noticed the problem though it has been in my office and connected.  Any issues with using it wirelessly and then plugging it back in?  Sometimes it did not print at all wirelessly but would printg when I plugged it back in.  You could barely see the black when I first noticed the issue but now just spits out an entirely white page.
    Thanks for the help!

My Photosmart C6280 will not print in color. All ink levels are good. Factory defaults clicked. Did I override something without realizing it? I don't see anywhere to click for grayscale. I am using an APPLE AIR....I have also turned the printer off and on again..

Hi there @Ashley31 , welcome to the forums
I read about how you cannot print or copy in color. Not copying in color is concerning, as the copy is a stand alone function that does not involve the computer in any way.
I'd suggest power resetting the printer:
Press the Power button to turn on the product.
With the product turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product.
Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
    Wait at least 15 seconds.
Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.
Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the product.
If the product does not turn on by itself, press the Power button to turn it on.
You can also remove the ink cartridges and reinsert them and try a color copy again to see if that helps.
If the troubleshooting does not help resolve your issue, I would then suggest calling HP's Technical Support to see about further options for you, such as a replacement or trade in.
